- Venice is one of the most well known cities around the world, renowned for its canals and history alike. Recent floods however have caused many to wonder if it was wise to build a city in the middle of a lagoon, leaving many people, myself included, wondering why did they build a Venice?

It has lots of resources in abundance: vast territories, wood, game, vegetation, good soils, oil, gas, minerals, ores etc. etc. It may be quite cold in winters, but it's very hot in summers. The mostly inhabited climatic zone in Siberia, along the Transsiberian railway, has weathers about the same as they have along the US-Canada border.

Two interesting facts I learned when in Venice:
One major factor in Venice's sinking is that early in the 20th Century, industry around the lagoon began pumping groundwater. The fresh water aquifer extended below the sea and under Venice. Venice was supported partially by hydrostatic pressure in that aquifer.
Second: The wood pylons under the city were not only protected from rot in the anaerobic mud, but over the thousands of years have mineralized -- basically, they are turning to stone.
It's only has been there for 1600 years, is that enough for the woods to be mineralized?

Theyre definately still wet because theyre in a lagoon but in an anaerobic environment so biological decay isnt a significant factor. I highly doubt theyre buried deeper than 10m below the ground.

Well now it's filled with tourists and airbnbs, there are hardly any local people living in the old city, they have all been pushed on the mainland or peripheral islands.

@Orlando Rotundo He could have circled around and then used the the usual and easy route. Thats what Romans were assuming too (thinking they would have plenty of time to prepare) but instead he just went straight through Alps with elephants.
Just think, back in the day if you wanted to learn this you would have to go to the library and check out several large books and read it all to get the abridged info given here. Let the knowledge flow.

the wood cannot root underwater due to the harmful fungij(not quite sure if i spell that right not a native) and the instincsnot being able to live under water so the woods cannot be attacked and remain as they do infact are in better conditon then pretty mutch all wood of similar age, but they are still being push down by ever higer weights

It is a bit shocking to hear no mention of the city's relationship with the Eastern Roman Empire or "Byzantium". It was quite integral.
He neglected the Romans totally. Venice is one of the reasons why Roman Empire disintegrated.
It was the main cause of Eastern Roman Empire final demise (see IV crusade)

Among the events which led to the end of Eastern Roman Empire, this was a huge event, since there was a before and after.
Before the IV crusade, Constantinople was still one of the most populated and richest city in the world.
After the 4th Crusade, it was a ghost town.
We could say, the IV crusade has been the final hit to the power of Constantinople.
One other important reason for the "sinking" of Venice is the usage of groundwater from under Venice, which has also caused a lot of sinking.

It sounds very logical. I imagine it has a large population now, not to mention the toutusts, and that would use a lot of water. And water is clearly making up a great deal of what is underneath Venice.

When emperor of the Hapsburgs, Charles the Fifth died, his son Filiph the second took over, and he already was the king of Spain. So he inherited all the Hapsburg empire, which the Netherlands was a part of. They rebelled for independence in 1566 which lasted 80 years.

Maybe. It's extremely likely that another city in the Mediterranean would have controlled the Spice Trade if it wasn't Venice as the trade had to go through that area to get to Europe. And all it would take is a ruler wealthy enough to fund a mad expedition further west than anyone had ever safely sailed before (that they knew of). Note that the Polynesians and Nordic Vikings had both reached the Americas prior to Columbus's journey (Polynesians heading east and the Nords heading west).
Not exactly you see, the Ottomans blocked the trade of spices because it was in the Middle East and could easily control the spice trade, Spain and Portugal had to seek other ways, Portugal went around Africa and Spain went west, finding the Americas.
This is a great gold historical nugget of history. The presentation of Venice is outstanding. It covers geology, architecture, pre and post Roman European history, tribal migrations, the motivation to build in a muddy lagoon, and the Venetian economic empire(something I did not know the extent of). All based on salt and spice. Venice had to be a naval power to protect the economic sealanes. Sound familiar? England, Netherlands, US...

Joshua Miller their are plenty of older cities with few skyscrapers that have high population, London and Paris are perfect examples, I don’t think necessarily gothic but later years architecture could fair much better.

Huge water extraction for the industrial city of Marghera, just across the lagoon, has contributed hugely to the sinking. More than anything else from what I have discovered.

Your explanation of the logs below the city combined with the camera's movement makes it feel like Venice shakes like a pirate boat.

It didn't
Probably it was thrown directly onto the canals. Nowadays, it probably works as a normal city would, the sewage goes back to the mainland to be treated and stuff

Can't say how the sewage worked but rain water was collected in stone tanks under the squares for drinking. Rain would go down the drains, be filtered through sand and stored ,the wells are still there but are now just decorative.

why does everybody forget of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which is the region just on the right of Veneto? My poor region was the entry door for all the invasions you mentioned :( . In fact, the first Longobardian cities were built there. In history, the first line of defence against eastern invdaers was tipically on the border of Veneto and Friulim, and because of that, there are many influences in the culture ofthe region

In the overhead shot of Venice, that long bridge looking thing is for their high-speed trains. I took one and it was pretty awesome basically going over water for 2 miles. They also launch cruise ships from Venice

Venice is build on German Oaks, which is a very hard and solid wood, known for withstanding all weather conditions for a very long time and preserving itself expecially in mud. Since some of them are rotting now or are instable, you can see everywhere on the side of German forest paths many big straight old oak stems which will be transported to Venice soon 😊

Distances would have been much too large without horses.
@Easter Worshipper the Aztec Empire was less than 100 years old when it was destroyed. Tenochtitlan was less than 200 years old.
Saying they couldn't defeat the Mayans is a bit of a stretch. They were a pretty new empire that hadn't finished expanding into its own region let alone the Yucatan.

European cities are truly the man-made most beautiful spots in the world. I'm in love with their vibrant architecture, the cities look like those from storybooks. Plus most european cities were built around rivers and canals. That makes them so different from the big, noisy and contaminated metropolis of today. It's so calm and beautiful and such a place full of cultural heritage. Modern architecture will never resemble that of the ancient european cultures.
People hate on Venice but honestly was one of the best citieis I visited in Europe even over Rome and Florence. The issue is the waters could be better, but even if you hate the large crowds, if you just walk around the city you will get why it is so revered. The structure of the city is super impressive and the way it looks is so unique. Hopefully they can preserve this city as much as possible.

Thanks for the information. I was always curious about the reasons Venetia was built on the place where it is. and how and why was built there. I was lucky to visit it, Venetia is still a beautiful city. It is also thanks to your story that I learnt that north italian people are blond and have clear complexion compared to southern italian people.

You know Paris, France? In English, it's pronounced "Paris" but everyone else pronounces it without the "s" sound, like the French do. But with Venezia, everyone pronouces it the English way: "Venice". Like The Merchant of Venice or Death in Venice. WHY, THOUGH!? WHY ISN'T THE TITLE DEATH IN VENEZIA!?

I live in Amsterdam, and that city was also built on wooden beams in marshy conditions. There's a children's rhyme about that, that I think is quite suitable for Venice as well. Literally translated it goes like this:
"Amsterdam, that great big city,
was built on wooden beams.
But what if the city falls,
who's going to pay for that?"
