  • Los Angeles has some of the worst traffic in the world. But just how bad is it? We raced 13 miles through the city of Los Angeles during morning rush hour to see which common mode of transportation was fastest: car, bike, or the metro.
    The results might surprise you in this one, broh!

      You can also get work done on your commute if you take the train. Source: I commute via subway.
      Also best way is to have two bikes, one at each end of the train. You bike to the subway, lock it there, take the subway, unlock your bike at the other end, and bike the rest of the way. It's the fastest way to get around. I only have a bike at the house end of my commute, because the place I commute to is right next to a subway stop. But if it wasn't, I would definitely do that.

I lived pretty close to the school (5 miles one way) and traffic right after school would be horrendous, so I just started walking home after school let out if I didn't want to catch the bus and stay after school later. The only time I really drove to school was on Fridays since I could go elsewhere when it let out. I still do this in adulthood since I live walking distance from work. That was an underrated benefit of the pandemic. It let people work from home and commute less. Which really changes the life you live for the better. Lol.

    I did something like this in Chile a year ago: 40 minutes for buses, 55 minutes for bikes, and 30 minutes for cars in a 8.8km conmute.
    But every vehicle has its downsides. With buses you need to know where you are going or you'll get lost (almost all buses are blue) and they can get very crowed. With cars you'll spend more money in maintenance, fuel and parking; and you need a safe place to leave it. Bikes need to be locked if you leave it alone, and you have to drive with caution to avoid being the crashed one.

    People say transit is slow but it was only 6 mins slower than driving... that’s actually pretty damn good. If you took into account that you often have to look for parking when you drive, transit might even be faster. That being said, the speed of transit really depends on where you are & where you’re going.
    This is actually a really interesting video; i’d like to see a bunch of trials done in different areas of the city to get a better idea of what’s the best option.

    • @seraphina985

      Yup I know with all the youtube videos where they do similar things in London the parking problem usually makes the car even worse still both in terms of time and price as parking is rather a sellers market in London. Basically anything else (Bike, Tube, DLR, Overground, Bus etc) even taxis as you don't have to try and find somewhere to dump the thing on arrival beats the car convincingly on both measures.

    • @Lafv
      @Lafv 5 років тому +4

      Seraphina S yeah European cities tend to have super efficient transit. LA was kind of built around the car though, so i’m impressed that transit was only a few minutes slower than the car. I live in a much smaller Canadian city and it takes twice as long to get anywhere on a bus (because we don’t have any rapid transit)

    • @fermitupoupon1754
      @fermitupoupon1754 5 років тому

      @@Lafv Even in european cities the fastest way to get around is usually a moped. As those are usually allowed to use bicycle infrastructure, so you can bypass the worst traffic jams entirely and they can keep up with cars within city limits because of the speed limit.
      I used to commute by moped because it took all of 8 minutes to get from home to work, where it'd take upwards of 40 by car due to traffic. These days I commute on a maxiscooter, so I can't take those shortcuts anymore. But being able to filter through traffic (lane splitting is not legal here, only filtering is) it's still a 12 minute commute because I have to take a longer route. I mean I can physically fit my maxiscooter through the shortcuts, it's just not legal to do so.
      And no matter how good public transit is, it never leaves from where you are and it doesn't arrive where you need to be, nor does it take the most efficient route between the two.

    Public transport is the winner for me. 12 minutes slower than the bike which is exhausting, and 6 minutes slower than the car which is stressful. It's not even a question for me. I imagine if highway spending in the middle of the 20th century had gone towards public transport infrastructure it'd be more competitive for time, too. Cycling and public transportation are the way of the future. Private car ownership is going to be a tough habit for the US in particular to break, much to the detriment of the environment and the working class.

      Yeah honestly I don't think anyone would mind if they just ripped off more top gear ideas. Obviously many of them are way too expensive, but over the years Top Gear has come up with countless little games and adventures to do with cars that are totally worth revisiting.
      Even without the unlimited budget and access to any car they want there's still lots of fun and creative stuff to do.

    • @uncaboat2399
      @uncaboat2399 3 роки тому

      To be fair, a small scooter makes a terrible transportation choice in most of Southern California.
      Most people here work in the city and drive 90 minutes in from the outlying suburbs. That's because nobody but the fabulously wealthy, or somebody who bought their house in 1960, can afford to live in the city.
      A small scooter will get you killed, and a motorcycle will get you maimed. A bicycle will you get you to your destination some time in the same month unless you have the health and strength of an Olympian athlete. The train has a schedule where it leaves every hour on the day, twice weekly, when not broken down. The bus comes around every hour unless it's late, then it's route goes in the opposite direction that you need to go. So honestly, seriously, for most people the automobile is the *only* choice.

    I've tested this myself(different city and country) and at best it took me 1hour and 5 minutes by public transport to travel from where I lived and into the city. The distance was 27km/16,77miles.
    I spent 45 minutes on a bicycle, and had more than enough time to get showered and ready for work, feeling fresh and ready for the day instead of a train wreck like most.
    By car it took me at least 1 hour and 30 minutes, and on motorcycle about 50 min to 1 hour on average.

    -car-

    A MOTORCYCLE :D
    As fast as a car (but split through traffic), as agility as a bike and more comfortable than a bike (but not a car).
