All of this is true. Got treated like shit for being gay when I grew up in a small town in southeast Louisiana. The worst treatment came from my Southern Baptist Okie father. When I learned about the Jewish refugees from the Nazis who came to the US helping our country to win WWII, I understood that knowledge is power. I wound up getting my first job at a math research institute started by those refugees. For young people struggling in small towns, remember that which does not kill you makes you stronger. Find out what you're good at and make it your life boat. Spend your life helping others. That will help beat back the demons like suicidal depression. Finally, NEVER ACCEPT SHAME FROM THE SHAMELESS. Thank you very much Samuel!
Were you ever threatened by someone outside your family? Did anyone pull a gun on you? How did you behave in public? I think there may be more to this than meets the eye.
Hate to break it to you but the US didn't win WW2. The Soviet union won the war in Europe thru the kids if 30 mil people. The US won in the Pacific but at no time did the Nazis have more than a quarter of their troops in the west fighting the US and Britain. Americans don't know history so you can be forgiven but propaganda since WW2 from the US has made it quite common.

I didn't realise this was a parody. I heard this months ago and randomly got it in my head. When I searched for this, I accidentally listened to the original. As someone who grew up in a small(ish) town now lives in a city - this song hits way harder.
It's a shame that the potential, and character of small town life is so often ruined by ignorant, obnoxious bigots. Small towns should be about tight-knit communities standing together, not raucous morons, but they're too often known for the latter.
As someone in a small town, this is surprisingly heartfelt and sincere. It sucks for everyone here, but most of them are adaptable to their life sucking, as it has sucked their entire lives.
As a "librul" who actually really likes a lot about small town life, I wish we could preserve those good parts of small town life instead of propping it up with blame and fear in place of adaptation and open minds. I know there are a lot of people out there like us, as I've met them in my travels all over. And despite all the tough guy talk from guys like the ones the original song celebrates, the open minded, good hearted people making their way in those places are usually the truly brave and strong ones.
Folks in small towns are sadly suffering the same fate as their inner city counterparts, namely being relegated as a staging ground for a future permanent underclass.
