    We bury people a little differently here, but perhaps some of your techniques will help.

    My great grandfather's brother disappeared after the Civil War in Texas during the yellow fever epidemic. It is thought he dropped dead on the street and was buried in a mass grave somewhere.

      How very sad for his family to have him simply disappear in that way.

    • @kimfleury
      @kimfleury 5 місяців тому +9

      Something like that affects a family for the rest of its generations, even when people aren't aware of it. Your great-grandfather no doubt suffered from deep grief and sorrow, without being able to mourn properly through the funeral rites. The sadness is then passed on through the generations, usually made worse when the survivor doesn't ever talk about what happened, so the succeeding generation doesn't understand what caused the sorrow. I hope your family has peace.

    We love your channel and admire the kindness you show people who you do not know. As we travel the world we visit cemeteries and are interested in how people honor their loved ones who've passed. We love genealogy and visiting the cemeteries where are family's rest. Thank you for the work you do! Would love to catch up one day and help you! John & Bev

    I learned something new today, as I had no idea that Tennessee ever had yellow fever epidemics. Thank you for a great video and Happy Easter to you.

      There was an Irish priest named Father Ryan (that's his surname) who was sent to Tennessee in the early-middle 1800s. They didn't know at the time what caused yellow fever, only that you could escape that plague by going somewhere with a different climate. Or at least, that's what people believed. So while all who could escape left the area, Father Ryan stayed behind to nurse and minister to the sick and dying. He, too, caught the disease, and died. He gave his life to serve the suffering. I found out about him when I was looking up the history of my grandson's name, just out of curiosity, because I didn't recall ever hearing of any historic figure named Ryan as a given name. At the time Father Ryan lived, it wasn't yet popular to give the name Ryan as a first name. But I learned some interesting and tragic history through my search.

    I need to straighten my father's VA footstone. Should it be even or above ground level?

    • @Lucinda_Jackson
      @Lucinda_Jackson 6 місяців тому +1

      Look back/watch through some videos within, maybe, the last 6 months. I remember his restoring the stone of a vet that had sunk significantly. If memory serves, I believe he said that many have sunk to be level with the ground, but that they should stand proud a bit. If you find that episode, you should find your answers.
      ETA: I went back to look and my memory is very faulty. It was a year ago and it was NOT that sort of stone at all. I'm so sorry! I did google and found a great deal of information.

    My family plot uses graves stones like the short rectangular one to the right of the one you worked on & the issue we have is moss or lichen that grows on the granite & is very difficult to remove. My mother found a solution that worked but she died 20 years ago & I’ve lost the recipe. I will subscribe & watch more videos in hopes of finding something that will work in that case. Thanks for what you do!

      Have you tried a strong bleach solution with a scraper & scrub brush?
      That's what we use to scrub that stuff off of everything here - we wear gloves while we use the solution of course, and we wear "yard work" clothes so we don't ruin anything.
      Sometimes we have to let it set for a few minutes on tough-to-clean areas.
      Afterwards, we go over the whole thing with soapy water, then rinse with clear.
      If you've tried this & it didn't work, I hope you find something that does.
      Best wishes

    I grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia and hearing about the yellow fever epidemic of 1855. It killed 3000 people in Norfolk and 1000 peop!e in Portsmouth. That was about 1/3 of the population of those cities. It was basically Armageddon with no hospitals, no food coming in, no communication, and so many dead that the Catholic priest helped dig graves. There were hundreds of orphans. Our church had a plaque on the back wall commemorating the clergy and parishioners who volunteered and died.

    I’ve asked several times and haven’t seen an answer, are you using straight water D2 mixed with water. I usually have my straight D2 in a smaller hand spray pump, let it sit 15-20 minutes and go back afterward and I will use straight water and a brush to clean off the surfaces

    The unfortunate thing is when most of us are forgotten, people move on, forget we existed, are final resting place if eventually over grown by nature because families don't like visiting cemeteries. For many years, which I have lost count of.the work to clean,fix family's places up at various cemeteries ,water strangers flowers, clean them up. None of my siblings have ever offered or taken the time to do this. I'm older,tired but try to visit, remember family, friends. Christ be with us all Buffalo ny
