Yes! 😫 Listening I just could not help thinking her parents kinda created this monster! What awful awful parents/ppl 😠 And to think, there are just SO MANY people past present and future who are just plain evil, some raising kids, some not. It’s just mind blowing. Yes Evelyn could have 100% done/been different. I don’t know about the whole nature vs nurture studies pertaining to people who grow up in turmoil, abusive chaotic homes either becoming crazy ppl or killers. I just don’t know if it really cements a person making them evil, emotionless and or killers. I know it’s a factor but there’s ppl everyday who grow up with physco parents who choose to go the opposite direction and be good ppl despite their upbringing. Idk I know Ive gone off on a tangent haha but just so many things to think about! This woman is just cold, heartless and evil GOSH!!!

@@finolaomurchu8217 Yeah, they pretty much told her to sell herself so they could live above their means. I admit I feel bad for her. She wasn't a good person, at all, but with the upbringing she had, it would take a lot to change her. I would be really surprised if none of the men ever abused her, sexually or otherwise. Childhood plays a huge role in developing mental healh problems and given how her parents treated each other and treated her... She probably had to deal with some serious issues and her worldview was severely skewed.

I live in Hamilton, 2 blocks away from where Evelynn grew up, and we are not a 'poor' neighborhood, even back then. It is an upper blue collar neighborhood. That was just Evelyn's mother's belief. And her father was a bus driver. And none of us who have grown up here in Hamilton have any doubt who killed John Dick and left his torso on the side of the escarpment. Here in Hamilton, Evelyn Dick is still a name that is hated, despised, and well known. She is our Jodi Arias, only half a century earlier.

I don't understand why she didn't just get their marriage annulled? Like when she realized that she wouldn't get any money from him, she could have just got the marriage annulled and then she could have married Bill. Also...I don't get why she killed her son. She could have just put him up for adoption like she said she did. She didn't seem to care if people thought that's what happened...why go out of your way to kill him..then KEEP him? He was incased in cement, she could have dropped him in a river and he'd have never been found. She was nuts.

Annulments were very uncommon and seen as shameful. It could utterly ruin her social reputation. As a woman obsessed with wealth and seemingly status she seems to have made the choice to become an “unfortunate widow” instead. I don’t think she thought about the fact she was killing him; just that she was getting rid of her current “problem” and likely so she could remarry to a richer man. It’s terrible but I would assume that’s why she didn’t seek an annulment instead.l

Morbid fact - in 2014 Chris Farias, a Hamilton artist and designer developed a line of Evelyn-inspired items sold at the city's annual Supercrawl festival including T-shirts, tote bags and shot glasses with slogans such as 'The fastest way to a man's heart is through his torso' and 'Love you to pieces.' Public reaction was mixed - some defended Farias while the Canadian Association for Equality, a Toronto men's rights group, stated that the merchandise glorified violence against men.

Alternative theory : Evelyn was innocent.
Peter (& possibly the other 2) were fathered by Donald. She saw John as an escape from an abusive life being used by those who were supposed to protect her. The idea that she didn't know what John made makes zero sense.
She was the family cash cow & her parents were just shy of pimping her out. Bill was probably promised he could have her once she was less able to get the cash & gifts (& may have killed Peter so he wouldn't be on the hook for raising another man's kid- makes more sense than killing his own kid without reason).
The living situation might have been push back from her mom. Once John was dead, she fell back in line. What options would she have?
On trial to not accepting the death penalty it seems like she was lashing out in all directions. Except at the likely responsible parties. Abuse victims often protect abusers. she might have been psychologically conditioned not to turn on them.
I'm not saying that I feel any certainty. I just can't get over her choice to marry John. And we know she was seriously abused as a child. We have slightly better understanding of trauma today and intelligence (even methodical & calculating) isn't negated by trauma. She likely NEEDED to be acutely manipulative to survive.
I just don’t see why anyone, especially Evelyn, would think John had money. Maybe if there were an insurance policy it could have been planned from the start but I why would her parents have objected?
They all knew him BECAUSE of the job & they knew exactly what the financial possibilities were there. Maybe he was out cheating or otherwise hurt her, but it’s hard to believe she mistakenly thought he would be her golden ticket.
Whatever happened, she doesn't seem to have continued on as a serial killer. I suppose it's possible. But it's not likely. Away from her family, maybe with therapy, she probably led a "normal" life.

So I was just watching another person's video and they mentioned that a family had their missing daughter's picture printed on the back of cards and had the decks distributed in the local jail. I thought that was just absolutely brilliant and it got me thinking this could be a great way to spread information. Have new decks of cards printed with each card having a different missing person, unsolved case victim, or Doe on the back along with their basic info and what number to call. Distribute them as the main card decks in jails and prisons. It could definitely get inmates talking and get information into the hands of people willing to report. You constantly hear about inmates informing on other inmates that have confessed to them for shorter sentences or privileges. Of course you run the risk of false reports but I think the benefits outweigh the risks here. I really think this could be a huge idea that could help solve cases and bring people answers. I, however, have no idea how to bring this idea to fruition so I thought of you. I'm hoping you see this comment and know someone who would know what some 1st steps would be. I don't know how exactly I could help but I am really excited by the idea and am totally willing to help bring this idea to reality in any way I can. So if you think this could be helpful please contact me or pass the idea along to someone who has the resources or connections to achieve this.

It sounds like Evelyn blaming an imaginary Italian man is the 1940s equivalent of blaming an imaginary Black man 😒

    • @gypsydonovan
      @gypsydonovan 3 роки тому +1

Yes. This is at the end of wwii. Italy, Germany & Japan were the enemy. Bigotry & nationalism were thriving. Blame an Italian and the cops usually won't even blink because they're conditioned to think Italian = Enemy in a way very similar to cops thinking black = criminal.
It's a problem when someone goes there falsely, but the bigger problem is that it works.
I remember the way certain family members just kinda nodded in an "I'm not surprised" way when Susan Smith was crying on TV. I was 15 & could tell she was lying. But, saying it was a black man confirmed a lot of racist fears, which allowed a lot of people to feel safe in white communities. Until they found out the killer was the white soccer mom type they'd instinctually supported.
It's a layered issue but it's also simple. Using hate to bolster lies rarely works long term, but I guess if you've just murdered someone morality isn't your top priority & it makes sense to use public sentiment to your advantage. Who cares if an innocent person gets locked up or even executed 😡.

I noticed there weren’t even missing signs in my town which isn’t even 30 minutes away. I contacted the family and got missing posters to hang in my business. There was a handwritten note from his 11 year old son in the package and it really hit me in my gut. He hasn’t accessed his bank account, he left his wallet, and medications. The only thing missing was his phone and keys I believe.

25:41 the "mountain" is actually the Niagara escarpment... 725 kilometres long and runs through Canada and the States...in this area (Beamsville/Hamilton/Niagara) we literally live at the base and on top of it. So in Hamilton, it would be Hamilton (at the base) & Hamilton Mountain (on top). The slope of the escarpment is forested where it isn't developed and there are lots of hiking trails (the Bruce Trail - 900km and Canada's longest and oldest trial) and people will do off-trail hiking/tenting.
edit: You mentioned the escarpment - so basically that is what "the mountain" is...just what we call it locally :)
