Alexandra and Donald's greed created a monster. Even though her upbringing was rough. Evelyn could have made better choices.I feel so sorry John 😞
Yes! Same thought.
Yes! 😫 Listening I just could not help thinking her parents kinda created this monster! What awful awful parents/ppl 😠 And to think, there are just SO MANY people past present and future who are just plain evil, some raising kids, some not. It’s just mind blowing. Yes Evelyn could have 100% done/been different. I don’t know about the whole nature vs nurture studies pertaining to people who grow up in turmoil, abusive chaotic homes either becoming crazy ppl or killers. I just don’t know if it really cements a person making them evil, emotionless and or killers. I know it’s a factor but there’s ppl everyday who grow up with physco parents who choose to go the opposite direction and be good ppl despite their upbringing. Idk I know Ive gone off on a tangent haha but just so many things to think about! This woman is just cold, heartless and evil GOSH!!!
@@user-vc7if8vc2r Imagine sending your daughter off to meet old lads, just horrible.😱☘
@@finolaomurchu8217 Yeah, they pretty much told her to sell herself so they could live above their means. I admit I feel bad for her. She wasn't a good person, at all, but with the upbringing she had, it would take a lot to change her. I would be really surprised if none of the men ever abused her, sexually or otherwise. Childhood plays a huge role in developing mental healh problems and given how her parents treated each other and treated her... She probably had to deal with some serious issues and her worldview was severely skewed.
using your daughter for some sort of gain because she's pretty is not a new concept. It's disgusting, but it's not new.
Absolutely not an excuse for hurting someone at all, but the fact Evelyn’s parents just basically pimped her out starting at 14 is infuriating.
I feel so bad for John. I hope he’s resting easy :(
Ooops, should have read the comments first. I just wrote nearly the same thing about her being pimped out and then scrolled down and saw your comment. Needless to say, I totally agree with you!
Completely agree
Isn't it crazy how much DNA and technology has improved? It fascinates me so much.
Pathologist named Mr.Deadman ? That surprised me more than this crazy case. But then again, I watch so much true crime, almost nothing shocks me anymore. I feel bad for John though, seems like he really tried. May he rest peacefully.

I'm so happy you brought us back to John.. I got caught up in the Evelyn family drama and forgot why we were here.. I can only Imagine how quickly the salacious details of her family and her way of life Absolutely distracted the public!
You did great telling this story, and best of luck for John's Great-Niece!
Yes, it’s so sad how often the victims and their families get lost. I appreciate Danelle for ensuring that the focus is brought back to them, rather than just sensationalizing the murderers.

Beauty bias is real and is truly bizarre! I remember learning about that in a college psychology class.
Do you think that relates to Chris Watts? I was aware of that in regard to Ted Bundy, but was shocked there's also basically a Chris Watts fan club (here on UA-cam too). I can't wrap my mind around it, so I'm wondering if it's because people find him good looking?
"captivating demeanor" = looks like a minor.
@@kaleidoscopic9495 it's called hybristophilia. It's the exact reason Jodie Arias has made more money being in prison than her free life. There's a whole fanclub, a bunch of men who are in love with her, she sells her artwork. Also like Charlie Manson.
The Halo Effect is insane for attractive people! I remember when people did it with Casey Anthony 🙄
@@kaleidoscopic9495 I'm no expert but I think in the Chris Watts case that may have something to do with it. I would guess a lot of women find him attractive because they have an internal need to fix someone and/or be the special one.

Imagine asking your teenager to flirt with older men to try and move up in the world. Jesus.
I think this was the reason her relationship with John was like this. She loved him but then didn't know any better. No excuse for her action but her parents pimped her out all her life
@@alexandran6009 agreed. She was taught to use men, but even worse, she was taught to do that by letting men use her. If that makes sense
I live in Hamilton, 2 blocks away from where Evelynn grew up, and we are not a 'poor' neighborhood, even back then. It is an upper blue collar neighborhood. That was just Evelyn's mother's belief. And her father was a bus driver. And none of us who have grown up here in Hamilton have any doubt who killed John Dick and left his torso on the side of the escarpment. Here in Hamilton, Evelyn Dick is still a name that is hated, despised, and well known. She is our Jodi Arias, only half a century earlier.
Well this case isn't well known anymore because of how long ago it happened.
I feel so sorry for John and for Peter... people were focusing on all the wrong things in the trial instead of what really matters
I love that you cover such a wide variety of cases. Whether they are older, newer, in the US or not. Thank you for raising awareness everywhere ❤️
imagine being a young kid running around playing and you suddenly saw a freakn torso one day?? OH GOD 😩
One thing this channel has taught me is that it's never an animal/mannequin
I'm from Hamilton, Ontario Canada. One of my best friends when I was about 12 years old used to live 2 doors down from the house on Carrick where the limbs were disposed of. When I first heard of this as a kid I didn't believe the story because it is literally outrageous. But then once I got to high school when I was in grade 11 in my English class. It's so interesting listening to this case knowing the areas of the city you are speaking of.
She should cover the tim bosma case.
I don't understand why she didn't just get their marriage annulled? Like when she realized that she wouldn't get any money from him, she could have just got the marriage annulled and then she could have married Bill. Also...I don't get why she killed her son. She could have just put him up for adoption like she said she did. She didn't seem to care if people thought that's what happened...why go out of your way to kill him..then KEEP him? He was incased in cement, she could have dropped him in a river and he'd have never been found. She was nuts.
Wow thanks for the spoiler.
@@kadeelacayo4806 LOL the fact that the comment section for true crime vids are usually so oversaturated with OT comments (how excited ppl are to watch, how pretty the youtuber looks, etc.) that there are legit ppl like you angry when they come across someone actually discussing the case........

Annulments were very uncommon and seen as shameful. It could utterly ruin her social reputation. As a woman obsessed with wealth and seemingly status she seems to have made the choice to become an “unfortunate widow” instead. I don’t think she thought about the fact she was killing him; just that she was getting rid of her current “problem” and likely so she could remarry to a richer man. It’s terrible but I would assume that’s why she didn’t seek an annulment instead.l
Morbid fact - in 2014 Chris Farias, a Hamilton artist and designer developed a line of Evelyn-inspired items sold at the city's annual Supercrawl festival including T-shirts, tote bags and shot glasses with slogans such as 'The fastest way to a man's heart is through his torso' and 'Love you to pieces.' Public reaction was mixed - some defended Farias while the Canadian Association for Equality, a Toronto men's rights group, stated that the merchandise glorified violence against men.

The fact that all of your Canadian followers, including me, never heard this story says something about how well informed we are 😅
I’m Canadian and have heard of the case. I also live in the area where this occurred.🙂
ikrr
Dang. 🙁
This is a well-known case in Ontario. There was a CTV movie in the late 1990s/early 2000s called Torso about the murder of John Dick, which is the only reason I knew about this case. It probably isn't well known by anyone outside of Ontario.
I lived in Hamilton I know the streets she talked about and what up the mountain means and I've never heard this before!
This case is just sad all around.. From her parents with raising her to how this turned out.
Side note: I need to know what Danelle uses for her glow. It look like a dewy finishing spray and I’ve wondered this for years. 😳😂
It really is tragic! And on the side note; I think she’s just got gorgeous skin, she did say in a Q&A she uses drug store make up though, that probably didn’t help you much sorry 🙈
I'd never heard of this case - have never seen anyone else cover it. Such a weird case. Parents: we can't have the lifestyle we want, so let's pimp our daughter to wealthy men!! It also seemed odd, that no one guessed her father was stealing money from the railway for many years. Completely bizarre all round.
I am a Canadian follower. I am from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I grew up on Kensington Ave, one block west of Rosslyn. I had heard of the case but knew no details. I have wanted to look into it for so long, I didn’t even know she lived in my neighbourhood! (Yes a few years before me, but my family moved from Poland in 1945 after they were liberated and moved to that neighbourhood) I am so glad you are covering this case so I can learn more about it! There is a book called “Torso” on this case (can’t remember the author) that I have been trying to find in a used book store for years to read.
Evelyn's parents created a "monster." I know Evelyn's upbringing wasn't all that great but she definitely needed to make better decisions. I honestly don't understand why individuals do the things that they do?! I feel so bad for John he definitely without a doubt deserved better.
Ahh...no comment.
Hopefully John is resting at peace even without justice here on earth. Another fascinating albeit sad case. Thank You Danelle.

Funny I’m in Ohio and just got off work and watching this now in bed. Lol. Best time to!
I think she married him because she expected herself to manipulate him endlessly. She wanted him to steal money from the railway, and she told him how he can get money she wants in life. I guess he put two and two together and figured out that is was the way his father-in-law operated.
That, or she truly believed he had a stake in his family company, that she could weasel away from him or gain upon his death.
I’m Canadian and I’ve never even heard of this I really need to up my game 😂

Hey, don't sweat it. There are tons of American cases that I've never heard of, and I'm an American.
the worst thing is, so many murders didn't need to happen and could be avoided but something about this case, makes me feel more strongly about it. if those parents weren't so beyond greedy and raised her this way, none of this could have ever happened.. rest in peace john and peter 🥀
I lived in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada for a number of years and have never heard of this case - very interesting! Thanks for covering! ❤️
Thank you for covering this, Danelle!! I live in Hamilton - very close to the escarpment - and once I became interested in crime stories as a teen, my mom told me about this case. We actually would talk about it basically every time we drove "up the mountain" and would morbidly wonder if we were passing the area where the torso was found. Thanks again for your detailed coverage and rest in peace to John ♥
This case is so crazy. So many twists and turns. So much stuff we probably won’t ever know.
Danelle Hallan is so BEAUTIFUL don’t y’all agree
Should be illegal to give murderes new identities and lives we deserve to know who we live around they took a life and this lady will never be rehabilitated. Great job as always Queen ❤
She was sentenced to life in prison with no parole. She was supposed to spend the rest of her life in prison.
But she obviously had some very high connections to get her out.
i’m constantly amazed at how hard my mom (and so many others) works. she’s always on the clock and we know you are too, Danelle. thank you so much, moms! rip to those muddy rugs.
It's incredibly sad the way Peter was found and how John's trial turned into a circus. 😔 It's also really messed up the way Evelyn's parents raised her, how disgusting (not excusing what she may have done)!
Also, I'm getting very vague Casey Anthony vibes. 🤔🤔
It saddens me that in these "high profile" cases, the victim(s) are often lost in all of the publicity and the horrific behavior of the criminal(s). The families of the victims often become victims themselves from the lack of true justice.

Alternative theory : Evelyn was innocent.
Peter (& possibly the other 2) were fathered by Donald. She saw John as an escape from an abusive life being used by those who were supposed to protect her. The idea that she didn't know what John made makes zero sense.
She was the family cash cow & her parents were just shy of pimping her out. Bill was probably promised he could have her once she was less able to get the cash & gifts (& may have killed Peter so he wouldn't be on the hook for raising another man's kid- makes more sense than killing his own kid without reason).
The living situation might have been push back from her mom. Once John was dead, she fell back in line. What options would she have?
On trial to not accepting the death penalty it seems like she was lashing out in all directions. Except at the likely responsible parties. Abuse victims often protect abusers. she might have been psychologically conditioned not to turn on them.
I'm not saying that I feel any certainty. I just can't get over her choice to marry John. And we know she was seriously abused as a child. We have slightly better understanding of trauma today and intelligence (even methodical & calculating) isn't negated by trauma. She likely NEEDED to be acutely manipulative to survive.
I just don’t see why anyone, especially Evelyn, would think John had money. Maybe if there were an insurance policy it could have been planned from the start but I why would her parents have objected?
They all knew him BECAUSE of the job & they knew exactly what the financial possibilities were there. Maybe he was out cheating or otherwise hurt her, but it’s hard to believe she mistakenly thought he would be her golden ticket.
Whatever happened, she doesn't seem to have continued on as a serial killer. I suppose it's possible. But it's not likely. Away from her family, maybe with therapy, she probably led a "normal" life.
She is not innocent
I'm Canadian and I darn well never heard of this but whoa Nellie this is by far the most interesting case I've ever heard of 😳🤔 🤷🏻♀️ this girl was something else! Omg all them faces in the courtroom, I would of paid too be able to go back and watch this when she named all these men. Like the judge musta turned 40 shades of red when she said his son 😳 not to diminish that a man who by all means seemed very sweet was murdered in cold blood, which is truely disturbing, like this girl was a disgusting human being, who was I believe a narcissist to the extreme. Yikes. :(
Kind of reminds me of the Lizzy Borden jump rope song
So I was just watching another person's video and they mentioned that a family had their missing daughter's picture printed on the back of cards and had the decks distributed in the local jail. I thought that was just absolutely brilliant and it got me thinking this could be a great way to spread information. Have new decks of cards printed with each card having a different missing person, unsolved case victim, or Doe on the back along with their basic info and what number to call. Distribute them as the main card decks in jails and prisons. It could definitely get inmates talking and get information into the hands of people willing to report. You constantly hear about inmates informing on other inmates that have confessed to them for shorter sentences or privileges. Of course you run the risk of false reports but I think the benefits outweigh the risks here. I really think this could be a huge idea that could help solve cases and bring people answers. I, however, have no idea how to bring this idea to fruition so I thought of you. I'm hoping you see this comment and know someone who would know what some 1st steps would be. I don't know how exactly I could help but I am really excited by the idea and am totally willing to help bring this idea to reality in any way I can. So if you think this could be helpful please contact me or pass the idea along to someone who has the resources or connections to achieve this.

Fellow Hamiltonion here 👋 There's so many good books written about Evelyn and everything that happened. I still get the creeps driving near the escarpment where they found his torso
Oh, man. That is creepy...too close for comfort.
I still love hiking on the escarpment - it's a beautiful place, with lots of waterfalls and great trails. Of course, I don't know exactly where John was found, either, but if I ask my stepdad, I'm sure he'd be able to point it out to me; he could probably write a book on Hamilton's history over the last century. Either way, I'm not hitting those trails alone!

Okay but the fact that when the lawyer asked who she slept with her response was “your son” is fucking hilarious.
It sounds like Evelyn blaming an imaginary Italian man is the 1940s equivalent of blaming an imaginary Black man 😒
Yes. This is at the end of wwii. Italy, Germany & Japan were the enemy. Bigotry & nationalism were thriving. Blame an Italian and the cops usually won't even blink because they're conditioned to think Italian = Enemy in a way very similar to cops thinking black = criminal.
It's a problem when someone goes there falsely, but the bigger problem is that it works.
I remember the way certain family members just kinda nodded in an "I'm not surprised" way when Susan Smith was crying on TV. I was 15 & could tell she was lying. But, saying it was a black man confirmed a lot of racist fears, which allowed a lot of people to feel safe in white communities. Until they found out the killer was the white soccer mom type they'd instinctually supported.
It's a layered issue but it's also simple. Using hate to bolster lies rarely works long term, but I guess if you've just murdered someone morality isn't your top priority & it makes sense to use public sentiment to your advantage. Who cares if an innocent person gets locked up or even executed 😡.
Grew up in Dundas Ontario just a few minutes from Hamilton- I remember hearing about this when I was young.
I live in Hamilton just a few streets away from where this happened. I have followed this case for years and I’m so happy you made a video about it !
Could you do Patrick Chapman? He went missing on Mother’s Day last year. He’s missing from Wayne County, Missouri. He was 34 then, 35 now. His case has got little to no coverage from media. I noticed there weren’t even missing signs in my town which isn’t even 30 minutes away. I contacted the family and got missing posters to hang in my business. There was a handwritten note from his 11 year old son in the package and it really hit me in my gut. He hasn’t accessed his bank account, he left his wallet, and medications. The only thing missing was his phone and keys I believe.
I’m just trying to get any attention I can on the case.

25:41 the "mountain" is actually the Niagara escarpment... 725 kilometres long and runs through Canada and the States...in this area (Beamsville/Hamilton/Niagara) we literally live at the base and on top of it. So in Hamilton, it would be Hamilton (at the base) & Hamilton Mountain (on top). The slope of the escarpment is forested where it isn't developed and there are lots of hiking trails (the Bruce Trail - 900km and Canada's longest and oldest trial) and people will do off-trail hiking/tenting.
edit: You mentioned the escarpment - so basically that is what "the mountain" is...just what we call it locally :)
Thank You for that explanation Rachael. My sister-in-law lives in Hamilton, we've never been but she's mentioned 'The mountain' before, but has never gone into a full explanation.

Hi Danelle! I love your videos. Completely unrelated, but your makeup looks beautiful- you’re glowing! Would love to know which products you use 🥰❤️
I live in Hamilton & was so shocked to see this covered by you ! It was the start of me following true crime stories. My Nana lived right in the area. So crazy.
There is a video saying what happened afterwards. It has an interview with a woman named Lynch who was with the parole board. She was the last person to know Evelyn's new identity.
Evelyn never told Heather her new name but they did met at least once.
im from hamilton on, i never hear of any kind of stories like these about there, wow
I was contemplating how bored I was and I had nothing to watch and then this 🙌🏼
Looking radiant as ever! You're amazingly awesome! I really think it's so fantastic that you are giving victim's and their families a voice.💖😪🙏🏻🙌🏻

One of the rare cases where the woman who's on trial actually needs to have her sex life details put out there for the jury.
