Hi! Great video, thank you! Being more modest, in a plane I cannot change so much, could a standard Go Pro adhesive mount support a GoPro Hero 11 or an Insta 360 if attached to the tip of the wing? It is for an RV-9A, speed up to 150kt...
@@VoandoComMarcelo Hi, sorry, I meant to reply this morning. Most of those adhesive mounts are plastic, I probably wouldn’t trust it with a camera. You have to be positive that a mount won’t fail. It’s easy enough to make a mount that will attach to 3 or 4 screws out on your wing tip.
James Riordan. Thank you. Sometimes I go out to the hanger with no intention of flying, just to hangout with my planes, tinker around and visit with my neighbors! I tell my wife I’m going to work! Lol, I retired 2 yrs ago.
Wheels in the Sky haha!!! Yes, my wife knows that if I say I’m headed to the airport for a minute, she knows she probably won’t see me for at least a couple of hours!! It’s definitely a joke in our household! I don’t have the airport neighbors to really hang out with as Kanab just isn’t very busy. I wish it was more so. Especially when I still had my 195, I often go to the hangar just to say hello to “the girls”. Now it’s just the Waco…and a quick hello to my father’s Husky. Someday, an F1!!
@Vered Fishbain Yoskovitz. Yes it’s in post. When you edit, you select key frames. Key frames are the view you want, ie where you want the camera to look. You also select the zoom level you want with each jet frame. You then scroll further along your video and select another key frame. The further apart the key frames, the slower the camera pans to the next view. The closer you make the key frames, the faster. For a guy without a camera crew, it’s pretty nice. Not exactly the best picture quality, but a lot of fun. Hope that helps.
Chris, thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. I think your application, design, and implementation are spot on. Beautiful airplanes that you have to fly, especially that 185. Blessings!
@jcmcclain. You’re very welcome. I’ve had a good time doing a few videos. I was lucky to find my 185, looked for a year. Once you start flying backcountry, it’s all you want to do. Can’t wait for it to warm up just a little more!
@@WheelsInTheSky I can understand that sentiment and love for backcountry flying. The most enjoyable flying I have done is the trips I made to Kitty Hawk, NC and Ocracoke, NC. At Ocracoke the runway is all that there is with the ocean100 yards away parallel to the runway with nothing but beach in between. Fly there in the morning and do surf cast fishing then home flying 20 feet above Albermerele Sound, beautiful.
I like this video on mounting a camera to a plane. It gave me a lot to consider. I need to get one on my rocket so we can collaborate our footage when we fly together.
@theaviatorew I did on my 185. The way I read the reg’s, no specialized tools or equipment was needed and it doesn’t alter the airframe. Simply put it on and take off with a screw driver. The bottom line is that you are responsible to make sure nothing falls off your plane. If you’re not 100% sure, I wouldn’t do it. It’s all fun and games doing videos, until something falls off and goes thru someone’s windshield. Then they loose control and hit a school bus and run into a tractor trailer, which goes off an overpass and hits a tanker truck which….. I also mostly fly over uninhabited areas.
@aviatortrevor. Hey Trevor, I think you’re referring to the tail camera shot. That was approaching Hidden Splendor from the south down in southern Utah. I pulled it from a video I did a while back. Here it is: HVE to Hidden Splendor ua-cam.com/video/aqIlsobnar0/v-deo.html
Great videos! Question: What did you use on the interior walls of your hangar? I'm wanting to insulate my hangar walls and cover it with something like what you've done. Very nice!
@VansAircraftBuilders.com. It’s just panels of sheet metal with insulation behind. Me and Joe bought it that way 2 years ago. Everyone wonders how a couple new comers like us found a hanger to buy. They’re a hot commodity. The whole hanger is a metal structure. I just had a hanger built up in Morgan County, 42U. Almost all the hangers up there are wood. So my walls are all sheet rocked up there. The guys all seem to like their wood hangers. They’re 60 X 60, 15’ ceilings and seem well insulated.
@@hm250 I’ve been through this. As the reg reads (and I’m paraphrasing) as long as the installation and removal doesn’t require any “major tools” no approval is required. Looks like it was held on with thumb screws to me.
@@hm250 HM, thanks for the consideration. That’s ok, I’m sure others will wonder the same. I’m not sure how smart it is to do such a video, I pondered doing it for months. But a lot of people wanted to know how I made the mount for the Rocket. It’s just as well that I let people know I only mount up the 185 in the desert. Thanks again!!
Hi William 1968, Thanks for the input. That’s my interpretation also. I’m not sure everyone will agree. It’s easy enough to remove and put in the back of my 185 till I get to the desert and put it back on.
Great job sir. I have 3 go pro's. Was thinking of also getting one of these 360 cameras. Have to figure out how I will install it on my Maule if I do. Maybe I should start making videos first before getting too crazy with it, lol.
@Joachim Stachelscheid. Hi Joachim. For a view of that tail mount, Here's a link to a video I made on camera mounts. Just scroll to the part showing my tail mount. How to Mount Cameras on Airplanes #GoPro #Insta360 ua-cam.com/video/AKKkPPcr9T4/v-deo.html For that tail mount. I used two 18"x 1" strips of aluminum, about 1/16" thick as the side straps for the mount. Then a piece of 1/2" x 1" x 12" aluminum channel as a spacer between the two straps that attach to the tail. I took my time contouring the straps to the shape of the tail. Then clamped the channel in between the two straps, drilled and pop riveted. Then epoxied a 1/4" × 20 threaded bolt in the end to mount the Insta. My channel was 1/8" thick, so a piece of 1/8" wood dowel on each side of the bolt kept it straight while epoxy cured. Let me know if you like more details, l'Il be glad to help you out.
@edstoro3883. I have a fiberglass cap on the top of my vertical. I used the first 3 screws on each side to attach some 1” aluminum strips. Then in front of my vertical, between the two pieces of aluminum strips I riveted a piece of aluminum channel, 1/2 X 1”, about 10” long. Hope that helps. I’ll probably do a separate video on how I made it. It’s a easy fun little mount for low wing RV’s.
@edstoro3883. At times it can bounce around a fair amount, but the cameras internal stabilization seems to do a great job of reducing it. When taxing over a bumpy surface I notice some movement in the video, but in flight , even with the pole wobbling around, the video is pretty good. I’m always amazed! You may have seen this. But here’s a video using the pole on the 185:Return to Hidden Splendor in 185 ua-cam.com/video/1stj9XNE7oU/v-deo.html
I just held my new Insta 360 X3 about 1.5' in front of my wing and was able to see forward, down, sideways, back and I could include cockpit shots. Is there a reason you have yours so far out front? I'm not doing any aerobatics, just flying...It seems that the longer the pole, the more it will flex? I've been looking for a long time how to do this with my low winged Bristell. Great content here!!
@DH. I’ve got my camera about as far forward as I dare. It does flex more, but the cameras internal stabilization seems to be pretty good at stabilizing my videos. I think anywhere between your 1.5’ and 6’ is fine. Much closer than 1.5’, it starts to look like the camera is just mounted on the wing. At around 4 to 5” and you can utilize the true value of a 360 camera where it looks like you have a camera man in front of your plane. While you’re holding the camera, try moving out to the 3 to 5’ range and see which view you like.
@@WheelsInTheSky Thanks for the response!! I'm anxious to try this. The weather here has been horrible for a couple of weeks with no end in site... You noticed no negative effect with this setup? No Aileron Pitch adjustments?
@D H. I have noticed nothing, no difference from before mounting. Yeah, our weather has been mostly bad to. Although yesterday day I flew a friends plane. It was cold, but still a nice day. Can’t wait for spring.
@@WheelsInTheSky Where do you fly from? I've been waiting for VFR to go from the Chicago area to South Carolina for nearly 2 weeks now. (Buying a hangar-home down there) This next week isn't looking promising either. Cold weather doesn't bother me. I have great heat in my plane, and of course it runs great in cool weather. @D H. I’m flying out of KBTF, Bountiful SkyPark and 42U, Morgan County. Bountiful is called SkyPark, but it’s not really. At least it’s not a place you live with your plane. I’d love to live in a real airpark. I’ve seen some real nice ones there in South Carolina, been tempted to go out there and look at them. You’re right about the summer weather, we just go early in the morning. What’s the name of the airpark in SC?
@@alphakilo-79 send me your email and I’ll send you some pics. I’ve been out to the airport 3 times and kept forgetting. But I took some today. Chwheeler1@gmail.com
What engineering sign offs do you need? You’ve slightly modified the airflow; you’ve added mass to the wingtip which could effect flutter in the extreme, the strength of the brackets, etc. Some installations are on certified (non-experimental) airplanes.
@parkburrets. Hi, I’m not sure where to begin. So, first, I recommend you don’t make a mount like this. Second, the airflow disruption is minimal, no worse than a suction cup mount or many of the other mounts on the market. The mass is negligible, far less than a minor fuel imbalance. There is no flutter. I test flew at each stage. Clearly, I went overboard with the brackets. No single or dual or triple or quadruple failure of a bracket will cause failure of this mount. I could be wrong, but the way I read the reg’s, this is not a modification of the airframe, but a simple attachment that I can put on or take off in a few minutes. I did put a lot of thought on it, discussing with friends who are A&P’s, an engineer and other pilots. But, in the end, just take it for what it’s worth. The same as most everything else on UA-cam, just entertainment. I made the video due to requests to show mostly home builders what I’d done. I hope you enjoyed, thanks for watching.
"My wife doesn't watch my videos...." almost fell out of my chair Chris! The struggle is real, isn't it? Guess it's not THAT much struggle, but sure is funny! One question: why is the pole so long? Just to get out in front as much as possible for a better perspective from the camera?
@Building Our DayDream. That’s right, just to get the camera out in front of the plane. I finally told her what happened to her hot pad- “I might have used it on my plane”
That's a pretty cool pole you've got there. I would probably paint it (black or burgundy) if I were you. I don't think you could shatter a carbon fiber pole but if that's a real concern, you can still insert an aloooominum part or a tether inside
@Nick’s. Stuff yeah, that’s a good idea Nick. I wanted something that was going to be able to withstand some pretty high speeds, and I was probably over concerned in the beginning. I think painting it is a good idea. I may do that pretty soon.
@Honji Clan. Hi Honji, most of the time I just turn on the camera and jump in my plane and go. Then turn it off when I land. The people at Insta also recommended this, as some times I’d be flying and wasn’t able to get my camera to start using the Insta app. Sometimes when flying my 185 or Husky, I’ll use the Insta app on my iPad to start and stop video. Those two planes have more room in the cockpit and fly slower, so I have more time to mess with the app. Also, if I’m going to use the app ., before I take off I make sure the app is talking to the camera. I have a friend who uses the smart remote, I got the impression he wasn’t impressed.
@Brian Jorgensen. Hi Brian. Just about year round, but the weather is unpredictable in the winter. In the summer, it’s usually great every day. Although in the afternoon it gets kinda bumpy. But mornings and evenings are perfect. I think fall is the best, but spring is pretty awesome with the snow still on the mountains yet warmer weather. Let me know if you end up out this way.
@Gerard Fardeau. Hi Gerard, thought I had answered. But showing I haven’t. I just use the factory settings. And make sure it’s set to 5.7k and auto exposure. For some reason the camera ends up on manual exposure sometimes and the video is worthless.
@bertraminc. Yeah, I bought it about 15 years ago. But I just sold it a few months back along with my Ford GT. For some strange reason, all I want is a pickup truck and more airplanes!

Chris, nice job. I saw in one of the videos a cable running out to the insta360. Are you able to charge the camera by USB cable in flight? Any overheating issues? Have you had any wifi connection issues with the camera using your phone, does it even connect in flight?
@Chris Tieman. Hi Chris, when I first started, I bolted a small battery box to the aluminum angle under my wing and ran a USB C cable up the pole to my camera. You may see the battery box laying on the floor under my wing during the video. I took it off as the camera battery lasts for at least an hour. If the camera sits in the sun, it can over heat and give you trouble. I use to start the camera while in flight using my iPad. It worked most of the time, but, sometimes it wouldn’t. Now days, I just make sure the battery is fully charged and use a 128 micro sd card, and turn on the camera before in get in my plane and just let it run till I land. Hope that answers your questions. Don’t hesitate if you want to know more.

@Mac Johnson. Thanks. I feel lucky every time I open the hanger door.
Great video sir! I just love seeing that F1! That’s a beautiful 185 as well!
@@jamesriordan7 I should’ve checked in with you last week when I went down to Hidden Splendor.
Wheels in the Sky anytime you are down this way, give me a shout! We’ll grab lunch!
@@jamesriordan7 I’ll do that!
Thanks for that video. How do you do the side-to-side sweeping motion? Is it a built in feature in the camera? Post production? Thanks!
@Shane Johnson. Hey Shane, yeah we need to do that. Plus, it’s about time to come up with a cool Rocket video!
Can I do this on a certified airplane?
@@WheelsInTheSky Haha, I love your rabbit trail of your scenario. Thank you for the advice!
Where was that canyon run at?
@aviatortrevor. Hey Trevor, I think you’re referring to the tail camera shot. That was approaching Hidden Splendor from the south down in southern Utah. I pulled it from a video I did a while back. Here it is:
HVE to Hidden Splendor
ua-cam.com/video/aqIlsobnar0/v-deo.html
How do you get on doing these mods to the certified 185?
Hi HM, yeah, I was reluctant to even mention it. I put it on in the middle of the desert , did my video and took it off to fly home.
@@wiljam1968 what reg is that?
Great!! Anybody give me the name and model of the camera please....
@aemagne. The camera is an Insta 360 X2. But Insta has just come out with a new X3 that you may want to consider.
This video wasn’t uploaded in 360 VR, but are you able to do that with this camera? Meaning, upload it in 360 VR directly to UA-cam?
@Whistle Blower. I’ve been thinking about doing that. I’ll give it a try soon. Thanks
@@WheelsInTheSky I am asking how is it done? I also have a 360 camera but I don’t know how to upload it directly to UA-cam as a 360 VR video.
@Whistle Blower. Oh, sorry. I’m not sure. I was going look it up and figure it out.
Great job sir. I have 3 go pro's. Was thinking of also getting one of these 360 cameras. Have to figure out how I will install it on my Maule if I do. Maybe I should start making videos first before getting too crazy with it, lol.
@skate allday Lol, that’s the key, making a video. I’ve got so much footage and I need to make some videos.
Great Video. How do you fix the Insta360 on the wing? Vertical or horizontal? Thanks for UA-cam answer.
@Joachim Stachelscheid. Hi Joachim. For a view of that tail mount, Here's a link to a video I made on camera mounts. Just scroll to the part showing my tail mount.
How to Mount Cameras on Airplanes #GoPro #Insta360
ua-cam.com/video/AKKkPPcr9T4/v-deo.html
For that tail mount. I used two 18"x 1" strips of aluminum, about 1/16" thick as the side straps for the mount. Then a piece of 1/2" x 1" x 12" aluminum channel as a
spacer between the two straps that attach to the tail. I took my time contouring the straps to the shape of the tail. Then clamped the channel in between the two
straps, drilled and pop riveted. Then epoxied a 1/4" × 20 threaded bolt in the end to mount the Insta. My channel was 1/8" thick, so a piece of 1/8" wood dowel on each
side of the bolt kept it straight while epoxy cured.
Let me know if you like more details, l'Il be
glad to help you out.
@Joachim Stachelscheid. Excuse me if I misunderstood your comment. Horizontal
horizontal on the top of the tail but vertical on the rod out in front of the wing.
Thank you for taking the time for this. Great!
Hey Drum, Thank you for the appreciation. Hope all has been well for you.
How did you mount the selfie stick to the fin? I also have a RV8. Rivnuts??
@edstoro3883. I have a fiberglass cap on the top of my vertical. I used the first 3 screws on each side to attach some 1” aluminum strips. Then in front of my vertical, between the two pieces of aluminum strips I riveted a piece of aluminum channel, 1/2 X 1”, about 10” long.
Hope that helps. I’ll probably do a separate video on how I made it. It’s a easy fun little mount for low wing RV’s.
@Edstoro Basically, just using the same screws that hold my fiberglass cap on top of my vertical.
@@WheelsInTheSky Thanks !!!
How much end play were you getting on the end of the rod under the wing on the 180 (?)?
@edstoro3883. At times it can bounce around a fair amount, but the cameras internal stabilization seems to do a great job of reducing it. When taxing over a bumpy surface I notice some movement in the video, but in flight , even with the pole wobbling around, the video is pretty good. I’m always amazed! You may have seen this. But here’s a video using the pole on the 185:Return to Hidden Splendor in 185

@@WheelsInTheSky Thanks for the quick reply. You can see what I am working with on you tube with Bristol Bulldog Flight. Thanks again
Where I live, winter flying is the best. Summers here have non-stop thermals that bounce you all over the place until you get up over, 5000ft. By the way...Love the 911. I just sold mine this last fall. I miss it. Had a Cayman S too. I want to get the new Cayman 718 GT4. But they are impossible to get, even if ordered. Waiting for this chip crisis to be over. I love Porsche. Have had a 944S and a Macan GTS as well. You have some nice looking planes there... 👍
Do you have more pictures of your camera mount on the tail?

Woo! been waiting for this one.
Valentino Dagher, Hi Valentino sorry it took so long. I kept wondering if it was really a good idea. I hope it helps, let me know of any questions.
Awesome video! keep it up.
Hi Raina. Always nice to hear from you! Hope you’re doing well.
Great instructional. Love the footage you get. What do you use for remote control, the app or the Insta360 GPS Smart Remote?
Thanks a lot
@JavaT6437. You bet! Hope it gave you some ideas.
Wheels, this was helpful. Thanks. Do you have a video on the tail mount?
@Studio RV8. No, maybe I’ll do a video on it sometime. That tail mount is a fun place for a camera.
@@WheelsInTheSky yeah, looks like it. Would love to get out west next year. What’s a good time of the year in that area to fly?
@Brian Jorgensen. Hi Brian. Just about year round, but the weather is unpredictable in the winter. In the summer, it’s usually great every day. Although in the afternoon it gets kinda bumpy.
