I've enjoyed very specially this video, since I'm a Noctilux shooter (even if I've never put my hands on a Leica camera). I've owned 4 different Noctilux so far: 1) f1, type 1 or 2, returned it to the seller because it had some grease on the blades; 2) f1 type 2, just like yours, sold it because I felt it was too much for a non professional photographer like me; 3) absurd guy as I'm, I ended buying my third Noctilux, a mint 0.95 at a fair price. And you know what? Even if I appreciated how good, how unique this lens was, I started to miss the rendering of the old f1 very soon... 4)So finally I found a guy who had a mint type 4 f1 and was lured by the 0.95 as I was by the f1... We agreed an interchange (plus money for me) and I'm home again! I'm really happy, I've tried many (and I really mean many) fast fifties and I've loved many of them (Canon 50L or Canon 1.2 LTM, to mention those that render almost as beautifully as the Noctilux), but, man, none reaches the poetical quality of the Noctilux f1... Moreover, as a mirrorless camera user (currently a Nikon Z7, but I've also owned a couple of Sony), I don't need to carry ND filters (I have them, and use them very often, but it's not compulsory for me: a CP is enough or even lowering the ISO to 32 , since I can go as high as 1/8000), and, also, I've bought a helicoid adapter, and I'm able to focus much closer (the Noctilux wasn't designed at all for such close focus, hence the 1 meter limitation, image quality gets weird, much softer and with tons of that famous Leica glow, but, anyway, I love to have such choice and the dreamy look really fits some subjects).
Hi Felipe! Great story and i'm sure we can all relate to it in one way or another! :) Very interested to hear about the close focus image quality especially so thank you for sharing that also. Non Leica cameras can bring a lot of benefits in situations such as these! :) More videos soon (even if maybe not as exciting lens wise!) :) Matt

Beautiful imagery! This might be the "best" Noctilux Video in terms of beautiful images. There are many videos where you see stuff photographed but often not real photoshoots with people. Thanks for making this video, it really gave a good idea what you can do with that special lens. Greetings from Germany, Dirksón!
Love your channel, and I don't see the need to justify purchasing this lens. Everyone has hobbies, I know people who have motorcycles, boats, go on ski trips, etc. that cost a lot more than this... and it is your business -- literally (and figuratively), as a professional photographer. Hope to see the Summilux 50mm (tomorrow?), as I am saving for that lens.
All I can say is WOW! I am now obsessed with doing everything I can to search out and purchase a used Noctilux 1.0. Great work, Matt. You are so lucky to own such amazing Leica equipment. And you sure do know how to use that equipment expertly. Your photos are amazing. I was wondering if you will do a video workshop on natural light portrait photography...I wold purchase it in a heartbeat. Keep up the good reviews.
Thanks yes it is a great lens (and a good investment long term I think..I looked back in my blog when I bought it 5 years or so ago and I "re-invested some savings" into it. The lens price has gone up quite a bit in that time so buying Leica isn't always as crazy as it looks (from the cost) and you get the enjoyment too. I have the 1.0 v3... Find it very difficult to use, hence came across your wonderful video. Was thinking of selling it to purchase an M246 and just use my 50 cron or 50 summilux in low light. But now inspired to keep at it, given the beautiful results you show. Your photography of models is just fabulous! Thank you for this video!
I noticed this too. Is this the camera M3 / M6 or film or the lens alone? I always wonder what combinations of Film / Lens will do. Matt is right. A calibrated camera is a must. I never use auto focus.

Hey Matt! Great video!! Have a Voigtlander 50 1.1 coming in, I know the bokeh for the Noctilux f/1 seems more magnified, been wanting the Nokton 1.1 for awhile, but that lens might be a gateway for me to get the Noctilux F/1 ! 😆
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom CV 50 1.1 is being delivered today, will compare it to the CV 50 1.2, if not satisfied, maybe have to sell some lenses to get the Noctilux F/1 :) which is sadly getting more expensive :/
after viewing the 50 f/1 and 75mm Apo f/2... I decided to 'cheap out' and ordered a 75mm f/1.25 7Artisans... will let you know what I think after it arrives....
A dream lens indeed. Living life on your terms is how everyone should live; and "feeding" your hobbies/passions is even more purposeful as you do so. I commend you for that approach. My dream lens is the 75mm 1.25 Noctilux, to pair it up with the Leica M-10 Monochrom. I am saving like crazy to get it and cheaping out on most other things. I should be able to get it by December, as I live a minimalist lifestyle. Hahahaha! I CANNOT WAIT!
That will be amazing for you, awesome setup and thanks for the support. I live cheap for sure but I want to work on being more minimal as for some parts of my life it's the opposite ha. Roll on December ;)
Thanks Banj! I've actually had the lens a long time, since my M9 days... back then a f1 lens was more for function in low light (weddings) than just bokeh and bling :)
For a considerably less sum than the above two, I've just acquired for my CL and T a 50mm Zenit f/1.2., imorted direct from a Moscow seller. I use two adapters in series, an EF to LM +and an LM to SL/T to fit it on to the CL. At 675g it's a great heavy hunk of a lens on the CL. Zenitar-C MC 1.2/50s 1,2/50mm
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I also have a 7Artisans 35mm f/0.95, and their 50mm f/1.1, a Kamlan 50mm f/1.1, and a Mitakon 17mm f/0.95 on the way. In the mid 1960’s I had a LM 50mm f/1.5 Xenon. I’m now looking to go lower than 0.95 by using a Metabones x0.71 adapter with the Zenit to result in a 35mm f/0.85 combination.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I just got to 35mm f/0.852 this morning, by coupling the Zenit f/1.2 to a Viltrox 0.71x expander. What I need now is an expander to couple an SLR lens, to Leica L mount. F/0.6745 anyone ?
Good review as always. I had the Noctilix 0.95 and sold it because the I don't like the bokeh so much. So I kept my 1.0. But I don't use it often as the shallow depth of field is to much a challenge for me. Also, I found that at closer focus distances (1 - 3 m) it is a bit to soft for my taste.
Hi I am looking at the newer 50mm F.14 Summilux or Voigtlander 50mm F1.2 but I have a older 50mm Summilux form early 1980s I am think of earther keeping the older lens or selling for earther newer Leica or Voigtlander. What do you think???
Older Lux is more like my Summarit 50 1.5. Very different to the modern Lux. Sign up to MrLeica.com (if not already) and I can email you photos with new Lux vs old Summarit to give you an idea. If you need 1.4 sharp get Lux, if happy with F2 then Nokton
You got a mint copy. Ive had my copy over 20 years, its a little chrome looking now. I got the 58mm version but also had the 60mm with the builtin in hood. They say its the same design but I think the 60 is more clinical. Its like when Toyota says its been building the same engine for 15 years. But its not the same manufacturing process so its not the same.
Nice, yes I notice the same with mine too. It depends which body you use as some lens profiles remove it. I have less vignetting on my SL now I have that camera (vs M240).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom ah great!! Shall check it out 🤓 Hey, can you please do a video on the LUMIX 50mm f/1.4 L Mount? I have a theory it’s kind of a rebadged Leica Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH !!

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Good sir, you are very welcome. If I may, I have a quick question. Your video on the Noctilux 50mm f1.0 was very compelling. So much so, that I’ve contacted a vendor about that purchase. My question, if you can only have one in your kit - and when talking Leica that’s more true than not/at least for my wallet - which one? Noctilux 50mm f1.0 or Summilux 50mm f1.4 ASPH? Stopped down, does the Noctilux pull double duty? Does the 1.4 of the Summilux still give me character and sharpness? When you stand up your media platform, I’ll be there. Be Blessed, Chaps
@@chapsibnnoel3626 It's a good question. 2 completely different lenses. Noctilux f1 has a lot more character yet is still super sharp stopped down. Summilux is sharp wide open and focuses closer but gives a more perfect/modern look. I use the Summilux more actually, especially with film bodies. See Summilux video for examples/ thoughts. It might help you decide. Thanks Matt
Already available in Canon RF, Sony E and Nikon Z mirrorless mounts, along with a DSLR version for Canon EF bodies, the Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 III is officially the first nifty fifty with an f/0.95 aperture released for the L-mount. And because it is available in Canon EF mount, and fitted to my 0.71 M43 speed booster, I could achieve the almost unbelievable aperture of 0.95 x 0.71 = f/0.67. OR if I were to use a 0.64 speed booster - WOW ! What is really needed here is a Metabones or similar Canon Ef to L mount speed booster.
Thanks Dan! I'm sure more speed boosters will come out. That is some serious shallow DOF! :) I use the Noctilux f1 on L mount with the 7 Artisan close focus adapter and it does a similar thing. (See adapter video for samples)
May I ask... why do you prefer the V2 and not any of the other three? Anyway probably the best work I've seen with a Noctilux. You are making these beautiful models even look more astonishing.
I had the F1.0 and glad to have gotten rid of it! To Big, and Heavy for what it does! Regardless of the expense! I picked up the Konica Hexanon AR 57mm~1.2 instead for $ 300. CAN.. Min focus at .45 meters. More affordable to the Noctilux, and rendering very Decent Pics in Film, and Digital!
Thanks Dizzy, yes i'm working backwards as I learn. I started with the mainstream lenses then as I learn more i'm starting to go to the weirder and wackier less known + older lenses. See my vintage lens review / LTM lenses / Canon LTM review.. I've not had chance to try the 57mm f1.2 yet.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I still have, and use Leica Vintage Lenses, but, for Special Use, I found alternatives that are less expensive, and still render Decent Pics!.. You are where I was many years ago, except I didn't have the kind of Budget you have at the time!
@@dizzybuizzy9347 Thanks, wedding photography was good some years ago so I reinvested every penny + more back into gear. I do less weddings now so wouldn't look to buy such lenses but i'm enjoying discovering other gems instead that are less known.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Weddings can be very profitable if one likes doing them! Especially in Med-Format.. I have seen your video covering some Vintage Glass - Canon, and Nikkor are not a bad start!
Dizzy Buizzy thanks yes I think as consumer cameras have got better and more automated my bookings have dropped in line year on year. I don’t really advertise it but I do enjoy them. Most people think I just shoot models..which to be fair I do most then time! (But that works doesn’t pay for lenses!) :)
Thank you Hendrik! I may have to extend beyond 7 days (if I can keep up with life!!) as they seem quite popular!).. maybe I can get to #10 (sweating emoji face!)
Hey Matthew, great video. i love using my f1 on my m9 even though it can be tricky to focus (my 3yr old is not the most patient model). Your images look amazing, are some of them done with studio flashes?
Thanks Joris, yes I mention in the video that I have to stack ND filters so I can use flash (part of the video shows some specific flash examples but other photos may include flash too) ..I like my lighting! :) - ua-cam.com/video/p69mwHS1OEE/v-deo.html
What would the comparison LTM lens be? I don't have an M mount Leica (yet..) Not including the Canon 'dream' 0.95 as its far too soft (and huge) apparently. Would it be the Summarit 5cm 1.5 or Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 maybe?
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I breifly had a Summitar and loved it, unfortunately it came on a camera I had to send back with faulty curtains. It was a toss-up between another Summitar or the f2.8 Elmar when I bought a iiig. The swirly bokeh on the Summitar can be a bit er.. different. According to one source, I was told in a Leica brochure the Summitar was suited to portraits, and the f2.8 Elmar to landscapes etc. I'd be interested to see a review on the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f1.5 Aspherical if you own one? I have the f1.0 and a 50 cron iv. I love the Noct for shooting at parties and street. I had the lens calibrated at Wetzlar to nail focus at 1.5m as the lens is really designed to backfocus slightly wide open. which I think is stupid. who cares if its prefect at 2.8 as I only ever shoot wide open. I sometimes wish I had the 0.95 as its hard to not pixel peep and the 1.0 is quite soft really. enjoying your vids.
Nice video Matt 👍 TTartisans just released their 50mm F0.95 Leica M mount lens for $760. I ordered mine through the LeicaRumors store. The cool thing is that it focuses to 0.7m! I'm hoping it's somewhere close to the Noctilux but I'm guessing it won't compare in terms of IQ. It is a cool alternative though.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks Matt, the examples you showed look great for the New Noctilux and the F1. The F1 Noctilux really does have a great rendering. Thanks for all the reviews!
Matt, is there any particular reason that you decided to get the earlier Noctilux (F/1) with the snap on hood in lieu of the later version (also F/1) that has the built in hood that slides out? ........just wondering.
will wait for your video on VF magnifier 1.4x but it comes in black color only, wish it was silver too, i would have loved to buy one for my *white* limited edition 10-P ... because black one won't go well with my fully white body ... thanks.
White 10-P wooo nice!!!! Yes black only sadly.. with a black lens it might look cool! :) ..that video is already recorded I just cut it out the Noctilux video as making it too long / off topic (most people don't watch more that 6mins!) :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yes, in january I received my M10P White & 50 summilux in India, delivered from Singapore, via the Leica Store in New Delhi. I find the VF to be too tiny for manual-focusing, & Leica should have continued with the 0.91x VF the M3 which is close to life-size or human-vision. Nikon SP had 1.0x VF magnification. Now no one makes such large VFs. There is a 1.2x magnifying eyepiece available for Nikon D850's 0.75x VF that makes it 0.9x. The EVF in Fuji GFX100S is 0.85x and in Panasonic G9 is 0.83x. Thanks, Regards.
They did the same with the Thambar. For near impossible lenses to find I think it makes sense and is a good idea. It makes them some money to keep them going and for anyone that can afford it and wants one they can.
Dear Matt, I saw this f/1.0 lens on ebay with a bidding price of $4000 to start. Your comments are timely for me, since I am interested in exploring some of those imperfections from vintage lenses with my M and SL cameras. Do you think the images taken with this lens will be much different than my 35 mm Summilux Pre-ASPH which gives “soft” images at f/1.4? Your advice is much appreciated.
The Old Troll here ...... Yeah. This is very intelligent review. I do not like reviews with brick walls , I do not shoot brick walls. Human's or the small flowers are beautiful better practical judgenment. The F1 with film is lovely. Color superb, lot of punch. The 0.95 is brighter but is it truly required that 0.95 for most applications ? I have the Canon 0.95 built into the LEICA in JAPAN and no not by the current guy that tapes shut the rear cam slots. My lens is PRO, looks as original in a Leica. I love it but still at 0.95 do not use always ...the lens glows at 0.95 , does the 0.95 Leica glow too ? Chase the light , and find your Joy ...everything else will come together. Cheers !! The Troll ~
Thanks Chris! (You don't strike me as the troll type!) :) Canon 0.95 setup sounds great! If you see the MrLeica.com 0.95 reviews I think I described it as the same as the Summilux. Ie. Modern, no glow. That's why I use the f1. (Good to hear you enjoy a less mainstream lifestyle too!)(sitting here with wooly hat and furry hooded fleece on typing as I don't put the heating on haha)
Just saw this - I love my F1 Noctilux! It does take some getting used to on a rangefinder, but much easier on a SL! Also, if you like to shoot video it can give some really dreamy effects.
I've always been super interested in this lens, but keep staying away because of the 1m minimal focus distance (compared to the Summilux-M 50mm "pre-asph" I have)
Thanks I just don't want to come across that I have more money than sense. I'm just an average guy like everyone else. And yes the great thing with Leica is the price goes up. I've done pretty well in the last 5 years seeing the price now.
As many said, no point in justifying yourself. It’s a beautiful chunk of glass 🙂. Since photography is your business, I would be curious to know if the lens has made sense for your business or you consider it more as a personal investment.
Thanks Nico, I just shared it above but I can share here too .. yes at the time of buying it was for function (on the M9 for weddings in low light at ISO 800) plus investment (i felt less bad buying as they hold their value) - you can read here - mrleica.com/leica-noctilux-50mm-f1/
5000 pounds? you stole it... I just paid $12450 plus 9.,5% sales tax for the .95 here in the US! .. and thank you for the tip on the ND filter... never really occurred to me to try that... I just shot higher stops in bright light.
Thanks SJ, no £5K was a price I saw for a used older version. Congrats on the 0.95! Yes you need ND on many bodies so to shoot it wide open. The 0.95 is sharp wide open so you shouldn’t need to stop down. 👍🏻
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks man... I enjoy your channel very much.. Just ordered the Leica E60 ND filter (I think it's 4 stops, should be enough) ... Keep up the Leica Range Finder content, so helpful!
SJ Thanks and great. Yes plenty more to come! (Even if not all niche Leica RF cameras). The M3 is still my favourite of all my many cameras so I might revisit that too at some stage. :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom btw, silly question .. but would you put a UV filter over this as an amateur photographer (not a working photographer) in order to protect it? or is that unnecessary?
SJ if you have ND on you won’t need UV too. Normally mine has a ND on but occasionally I use without anything. I normally use a hood but yes a decent UV will help protect it better.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom of course and as you said, it makes only sense if you use it wide open. But I guess if you compare it to the Voigtländer 1.1 (I really didn't like that when I owned it) or the 7Artisans 1.1 it would be most obvious you have to step down the others to come close to such a nice look. But then a good 1.4 or 2.0 lens is cheaper and better than a bad 1.1.
Haha, yes model photographer works for me. I get to hang out with people I would never normal meet and it doesn't cost me..so I can then buy lenses instead! :)

Thanks Steve, yes i've not used my f1 for a while. EVF might help with focusing (see that video).
Thanks and nicely described with Toyota!
I have V4 which produces some vignetting with ND filter. Although it’s not a everyday lens, the dreamy look definitely is very unique.
Nice, yes I notice the same with mine too. It depends which body you use as some lens profiles remove it. I have less vignetting on my SL now I have that camera (vs M240).
Matt, I love the look you got with the ND, wide open and flash! I have never used flashes before. Which one would you suggest for a LUMIX S5 ?

Be Blessed,
Chaps
@@chapsibnnoel3626 It's a good question. 2 completely different lenses. Noctilux f1 has a lot more character yet is still super sharp stopped down. Summilux is sharp wide open and focuses closer but gives a more perfect/modern look. I use the Summilux more actually, especially with film bodies. See Summilux video for examples/ thoughts. It might help you decide. Thanks Matt
Hello Matt, where do you buy cheaper hood for this lens ? I have the same lens like you !! Thanks in advanced!
Hi Eddie, I just found mine cheap on eBay some years ago.
Thanks for your kind words! No reason regarding the v2, I think I found a v2 for sale so I went with that.

What would the comparison LTM lens be? I don't have an M mount Leica (yet..) Not including the Canon 'dream' 0.95 as its far too soft (and huge) apparently. Would it be the Summarit 5cm 1.5 or Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 maybe?
Yes maybe the Summarit though nothing is exactly the same. The f2 Summitar has more character than the Summarit so maybe that too.
Thanks, Regards.
what do you make of leica making a modern replica of the original f1.2 noctilux?
