This is exactly how a lens review should be - a comparison of lenses per their actual use, not per contrived reductionalist conditions. Although I've been quite happy with my [more clinical] Mitakon 0.95/50 mark III until this point, the expressivity of the TTartisan 0.95/50 you've demonstrated here has sold me on the lens. It's possibly next in line after the Nokton 1.5/75 or Laowa 0.95/35 now that I've ordered the Color-Skopar 3.5/21.
Thank you! Yes it's a good one. The Nokton 75/1.5 is amazing too and much sharper wide open. I have the older 21/4 but I will try to review the newer 3.5 at some point.
Congratulations, I'll bet this review will sell a lot of these lenses! Not to me… I suspect it falls into the too-fat-for-PIXII category… but many will be impressed by the fact that full aperture is usable and stopped-down imaging seems quite nice. As best I can figure out without having any Chinese-speaking friends, 7Artisans and TTArtisan (different companies, and also not good friends from what I've read) are basically lens-design “studios” that contract with DJ Optical (the name on the front rim) to manufacture their designs. This seems like a good structure for having small, innovative teams create interesting lenses that can be sold at reasonable prices.
Good video/review . Glad I found your channel a while ago and when I find the time I look around on your Website and Social Media sites where I choose a look that I like and then I look for the data on the lens/camera it has been shot with. So then I am not biased by brand name or price. Also thanks for the RAW shot(s) in comparison with the Mr. Leica "sauce" images. You covered it all in this review. Great job. Now 3 x $ 755.- = $ 2265.- however the $ 1800.- is far from that, even less than 2.5 x but then your name is Matt and not 'Math' hehehehe. What I miss in those 'not Leica lenses' is the absence of the 'Leica Pop' or micro contrast or 3D look, especially with B/W images. As mentioned when I scroll through your images on different sites, when I see the distinguished micro contrast , most of the time on hair or nose of your model, it's always a Leica lens (Summilux e.g.) Since this tested lens has more glass than usual (11 elements) for this type of lenses the chances of micros contrast are reduced cause glass is evil for MC. But if you are not interested in all those minor specs , it is a good lens for the money, or big bang for your buck as they say !! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks RS, no problem for RAW shots. Sorry for the price I took the GBP prices £585 x3 vs £1650 (almost 3x!) I think even as a Leica owner I notice the MC less than others. I know more glass is usually said to be 'bad' though. You would like the CV Heliar 50mm f3.5 as that has few elements (and said to have great pop). I have it.
These fast lens noctilux , Voigtlander , TT artisan … are so good on B&W photography . For the money the TT artisan is a clear winner for the price and performance of what you are paying .
Another interesting and well thought out authoritative lens review. I expect that from you. What I am impressed with is your seemingly good, professional relations with your models. A tip of the hat to you for that.
I just received my copy of this lens today. I did a few test shot with this lens, the colour reproduction with this lens is rich and vibrant, I think this lens like many of voigtlander's offerings beautiful skin tone and natural if slightly softer rendering. I shot with Sigma 105mm F1.4, it is sharp corner to corner, almost too clinical when I can enlarge and see very pore in the skin, very neutral skin tone that require a bit more post processing. I have acquired two or three Chinese made lenses like Mitakon 85mm F1.2, Laowa and also used Nikon 105mm F2.5, Voigtlander 58mm F1.4, I use these lenses to supplement my autofocus prime from Sony and Sigma. I will probably get 35mm F1.2 or 40mm F1.2 Voigtlander as my next lens.
I've got the TTArtisans 21mm f1.5 in M mount. I'm no expert in any way but I do think this lens is incredible value for money. I would love to hear your thoughts about it one day. Cheers.... 👍
Very fun lens, although it suffers hugely in backlighting. It's uncorrected sperical abberation creates massive glow that obliterates subject edges images during backlighting. Because the lens is so wide the glow isn't normally obvious. After getting burning a few times by this problem I ordered the Voigtlander Color-Skopar 21mm f3.5.
Don't know if you'll see this as it's been some time since your review. Based on your comments I purchased the TT Artisans 50mm 0.95. Build quality is good and I have no issue with the focus. However, there seems to be a consistent problem between the aperture I've set and the aperture that shows in the metadata. And the maddening factor is that the discrepancy is inconsistent. Sometimes it shows a stop higher, sometimes a 1/2 stop lower. I've not been able to find anything that references this on the internet. Do I have a bad lens? Many thanks. Ken
Thank you for this interesting, valuable video! Having watched this and some of your other "fast 50" reviews, and seeing how you felt the Voigtlander 50mm 1.2 and 1.0 were quite comparable in image quality (aside from heavier vignetting in the latter), I'm getting the sense that for the same reasons presented in this video, you might prefer this TTArtisan over the Voigtlander f1.2 as well?
Thanks. Yes often I enjoy ‘art’ lenses for portraits, whether imperfect vintage or imperfect modern. The CV 50 1.2 and f1.0 give a more perfect more modern look. (Both are half way between arty and perfect so can be a happy middle ground for some). I didn’t get either. Yes I prefer the TTA here.
Hi Matt! What about this lens Mr.Ding Noxlux DG 50/1.1 E58 V2 For Leica-M I tried to give you a link, but the post was deleted. You can find it by searching on Google
Nice review, great pictures! As a amateur model photographer I’m waiting for my 50mm 0,95 from Meike for my Fuji gear to arrive in a few weeks. Hope we get to be friends and it turns out to be worth the money 😊
Yay for old Contax lenses! The best reason to get a Contax or Nikon S mount camera is that the lenses are harder to adapt so there are so many cheap lenses out there. But shh don't tell everyone, or Kievs and Contaxes are going to start getting expensive!!!
Why do you put a Nkn lens co on the TTA? Best will be a solid plastic cover around the outside of the lens. Never use Fujfilm lens caps, it makes your lens wobbling and tipsy.
Yes the M3 is your best chance for M film bodies. I used the Noctilux with film bodies in the past. With the 0.95, just make sure you calibrate it and you should be fine.
Thank you very much . Shooting by Leica is every photographer’s * Dream * , I think so . It might be one of the fantastic life . Mar. 20th 2022 Sun. 05:50 am from Yokohama City Japan
Hey Matt, a bit late to the party but I'm thinking of swapping my Voigt 50 1.1 for an even faster lens. The 50 1.0 seems perfect but very expensive, so I'm leaning towards the TTArtisan more. Did you get a chance to compare light transmission on the VL 1.0 and the TT 0.95 by any chance? I'm looking for the brightest lens possible, and something tells me the Voigt could have better light transmission despite the slightly smaller F number. Thank you!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Ah okay thanks! I was asking because you did compare both VL 1.2 and 1.0 brightness and vignetting in a dedicated video, so I thought I might have been the case here too. Do you still own the TT 0.95 and VL 1.0?
Ugh...I'm vacillating between the TTArtisan 50mm .95 and the Voigtlander 50mm 1.0. I like that painterly look, but I REALLY want my lens to be rangefinder coupled out of the box, and so far, on my M10M, I've had all Voigtlander and so far am in love with all their lenses to date. The price, of course is a factor, I love to save a dollar as much as anyone. Hmm...What's the difference between 1.0 and 0.95, like 1/10th of a stop? If it is that small, I might save my pennies a bit more for the Voigtlander, but ugh....decisions decisions. Thanks for another great review Matt. I'll now go back and watch your review (again) on the Voightlander. Hey, any idea which of those two lenses has the larger image circle? I'd love to adapt a super fast lens to my GFX100...with it's digital MF sensor, the larger circle would help... CC
Hi Matt. Honnest I am usually not a big fan of very fast lens but I like beautiful pieces and I must admit this one looks amazing. It reminds me the Leica/lumix 42.5 f1.2 for m43. I find it particularly beautiful and well balanced on the SL. Then about the images , I must say your female portraits with it are really beautiful with an adorable dreaming touch. So even if it s not expensive for such an aperture , it remains a little high priced for my budget but if I see one on second hand market I may get it… Thx for this review which may once again costs me a lot :).
another great video, i have got the 7 artisans 50/ 1.1 , similar to the one you tested , I've use it on my leica M1 ,mixed results but excellent on my olympus OMD M5, like you I've never used Chinese lenses before but they are great value....
Thanks Michael, great to hear you have the 1.1. Yes I enjoy these more for digital too though the 28mm f5.6 TTA is beautiful so I recently shot film with that on the M4-P and CL. (Results still to follow!)
Hey Sergio, yes as EVF is 100% accurate every time. OVF depends if lens AND camera are both correctly calibrated. (I've shot the Noctilux on the Leica M6/M3 etc before and shot whole weddings with the Nocti on the M240 BUT as I get older and wiser I will now use an EVF camera like the SL with fast lenses. Also the main point is Chinese lenses don't arrive calibrated so using EVF avoids need to calibrate.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank you for taking the time to reply! I am interested in the Leica M system mainly because of its durability and compactness. I would prefer to rely on the OVF to keep the camera compact discreet, but as you said you can mount the EVF for some specific situation.
Nice review Matt, spot on. I've had this lens for nearly a year now. It's so much fun to use. Unfortunately for past six months I just can't seem to get a clear run to make more of those interesting images. You know work, family, life whatever seem to get in the way. Oh and I don't like the gold either!
Thanks Rob and good to hear from you. Sorry to hear that you are too busy for photos. If you need an excuse to get out over the summer feel free to get in contact if you want me to arrange something in London again.
The titanium version is sooo sexy. I might pull the trigger on that version and slap it on my Nikon Zf. Weird combo, but something about this lens that keeps pulling me in. Maybe acquisition syndrome haha.
Absolutely!! See my recent "Boys, Toys .." video, it gets mentioned in that. Brilliant lens on the SL. (See blog post on MrLeica.com too for full res images)
Hello,im a big fan; I thank you very much for you permanent help. A question please do you think there is a way of using a TTArtisan 35mm 0.95 on a Leica M? Maybe with an adapter from L to M. Do you think its possible? And in a M39 LTM mount? Thank you
Thanks. You can always mount bigger formats to smaller but not smaller to bigger. So FF or MF on APS-C but not APS-C to M. (You can do APS-C L lens to FF L as the same mount**)
I have a Leica CL. So this would be like a 75mm on the CL. What are your thoughts. I know its going to be front heavy. But still less weight than on my SL3. You can eliminate vignetting on an APS C camera You lose some DOF but so what if you can nail focus
Hi, I think it is too heavy for the CL but it will work of course. Yes you will get the centre sharpness and no vignetting being APS-C. You would hold the lens and not the camera. Is SL3 a typo?
It's a funny thing to me... The actual Noctilux killer in my opinion is... the OLD Noctilux. The 50/0.95 is just way too modern, it has a creamy smooth bokeh rendition that doesn't appeal to me. The older OG Noctilux 50/1.0 has so much more character in the bokeh, making it a much more versatile portrait lens to me. I'm glad more and more third-party companies are making those vintage style lenses, but none of them have allured me so far. Voigtlander Classic 35/1.4 is wonderful, I'd love if they did a 50-55mm Classic 1.2-1.4 with that same kind of vintage double gauss/biotar/planar style bokeh.
Thanks! Yes excuse the title! I thought it might bring in a few extra viewers. I'm on the fence Nocti f1.0 vs TTA f0.95 shooting bokeh and close or at to wide open. I need to go bokeh shooting once spring arrives and we have leaves to give them a proper test. Like you I think the Nocti might edge it with extra character and swirl but we'll see. Yes I have no interest in the new Nocti 0.95. Too similar to the Summilux 50/1.4 ASPH rendering to own both.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom nothing wrong with the title mate :) I shot the Contax Planar 50/1.4 for some time, but find it too sharp and contrasty, I have a soft spot for the Pancolar 55/1.4 and Zuiko 55/1.2, and a huge soft spot for the Canon 50/0.95 LTM and as an experiment got the Canon 50/1.2 LTM, but the focusing distance is atrocious... Just got some hex keys and modified the mount so it focuses from 50cm to 5m instead of 1m to infinity. Don't think I'll ever need to focus past 5m, so will be testing it soon, fingers crossed :D Agreed about the 50/0.95 Noctilux, too modern, too clinical.
@@KNURKonesur Thanks and very nice! I have the Planar now so a review will come for that one day. Can you use a close focus adapter for these lenses? I use mine non-stop on SL.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom couldn't find one for the A7, especially that the LTM lenses only extend by about 3-4mm from minimum focus to infinity so it's a matter of moving the lens literally 1-1.5mm away from the camera.
Excellent review. I really appreciate seeing the side by side comparison shots. I also like the explanation of which Leica cameras each lens is best suited for.
Hi Alexander, I've not but realistically it wont match the Summilux exactly wide open at f1.4 but I think I hear that it's still great for the money. The Lux has still beat every lens I ever tested from all brands at f1.4. By f2 other brands win. (Voigtlander APO)
nice video, again ! TTArtisan is definitiv not my brand. I know you like a different look, but this TTArtisan look is absolutely not my. I prefer sharpness, soft sharpness means not sharp. And I like well corrected lenses. For me the Leica 1.4 50mm asph is the best 50mm M-lens, the apo 2.0 is also a perfect lens.
Thank you Matt for this great review! As usual very instructive. Maybe I’m the only one here to think that way, but I am wondering if it is reasonable at the moment, no matter how good and cheap it might be, to consider buying a Chinese product, over, say, a European made?
Thanks David, yes I admit I only look at lenses as objects and don't consider situations surrounding them or world politics. Some may want to buy from the US/ Europe instead for sure.
As a bonus, the lens cap can also be used as a snack dish. I’m loving the 50f2 APO Voigtlander BTW. Pretty much the only 50 one will ever need. Those backgrounds go creamy as fuck! Who needs f1.2? Nobody! 😀 … and the RAW files are so sharp, colorful and saturated they hardly need any editing. … Makes you really think when these super fast lenses here start their best at 2 and f2.8, and the APO will still be smaller, lighter, and optically superior…. And who wants to miss any of Amy’s TTs at f0.95? I want to see as much of Amy’s TT’s as possible. 🙅🏻♂️ FWIW, I think the VL 50f1.0 has much nicer IQ to my eyes. Even when the TT looks “sharper” it’s sharp the way the Planar is sharp. Looks rougher to me than the VL at f1.0, the VL looks much nicer on skin. Not sure if you’re seeing the same on your end. However for a TT artisan cheap Chinese lens at 0.95 is really amazing. I really though it would be unbearably bad. The Fuji guys may really enjoy this lens for some unique looking dreamy shots. Now you can have a spare f0.95 that isn’t expensive and not crap either. Good.
I kinda wish more expensive lenses had an easy way for the user to calibrate them and ensure precise focus. Leica tolerances are tight of course, but my 50 Lux ASPH was never quite perfect on my M4 wide open. Plus CLA turnaround times have been pretty long that last couple years. The only other lenses I’ve seen with the ability to calibrate like these have been high-end Zeiss B4 cine lenses (Zeiss Digiprimes), and anyone who used those lenses were always grateful for the feature. Does anyone know of other lenses that are self-calibrated?
Gosh I am seeing sooo many reviews on these cheapie TTartisans lenses. Not my cup of tea. It’s like going to a five star restaurant, ordering a filet mignon and asking for ketchup for the steak. These cheapie lenses will never be attached to my Leica. Sigma and Voigtlander provide great lenses that can rival Leica quality. Older Leica R lenses can be a cost effective alternative and provide a quality lens. These promotional reviews are just too numerous. Time to prune back my subscriptions.
Thanks Steve, as you may know I love my Leica M, R, LTM glass but I enjoy testing other brands too. Sometimes you can find real gems. I much prefer it to Sigma and it wasn't that long ago they they would give any camera a bad name if you attached one to it. I remember my Nikon days, I used everything except Sigma if I remember. Voigtlander offer a nice happy middle ground and the new Sigma stuff is sharp and modern for those that like that look. I'm a weird one as I use Leica as I like using the camera rather than because of a "fancy" brand. I got into the system as I loved the rangefinder experience and the latest and great Nikon D800 at the time wasn't exciting me in the slightest. If you use Sigma anyway I would certainly recommend trying other cheapie lenses like these.
You know I’m not a professional and don’t have the stable of models to shoot as you do but what I get tired of is this camera snobbery. I could give two shizzles about who makes the lens or camera body. It could say Kmart on the front as long as it works well. Some people in this world can’t go out and spend the kind of money it takes to be a Leicaman. And to take it a step further, although your reviews do point out differences in quality of lenses, at the end of the day most people wouldn’t be able to tell you what kind of lens you used. I bought a Zeiss 24-70 AF for my Sony A7Rii and it got a lot of crap reviews and of course some good ones. I guess it isn’t as sharp on the edges as other lenses might be. And it is an F4. But I carried it all over Italy when I was there and I got gorgeous shots. I’m at the point where I have too many film cameras and a ton of lenses, many I picked up on the cheap such as a few Russian lenses. Final point. Some of the best photographers ever used one or two camera bodies and maybe two or three lenses. Photography is more defined by the sculpture and not the tools. Love your reviews Matt. I'm looking for the brightest lens possible, and something tells me the Voigt could have better light transmission despite the slightly smaller F number. Thank you!
Hi, I didn’t notice the transmission difference sorry. The TTA is more arty, Voigtlander more modern.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Ah okay thanks! I was asking because you did compare both VL 1.2 and 1.0 brightness and vignetting in a dedicated video, so I thought I might have been the case here too. Do you still own the TT 0.95 and VL 1.0?
@@JimBaker-ks4io I use the TTA, the Voigtlander was only for a short loan. I much prefer the TTA rendering
10:49 this shot is amazing
Thanks! Yes I love it too.
CC
Yes for RF camera the Voigtlander is useful being calibrated. I’m happy with my 0.95 on the SL and don’t plan to buy the f1.
Not sure on image circle sorry
Freakin awesome review, Matt .... 10 thumbs up !!!
Thanks! Love this lens (I’ll have to rewatch to see what I did right!)
Thanks Phil, sorry that my videos are costing you money. I still enjoy this lens. Great for portraits.
another great video, i have got the 7 artisans 50/ 1.1 , similar to the one you tested , I've use it on my leica M1 ,mixed results but excellent on my olympus OMD M5, like you I've never used Chinese lenses before but they are great value....
Thanks Michael, great to hear you have the 1.1. Yes I enjoy these more for digital too though the 28mm f5.6 TTA is beautiful so I recently shot film with that on the M4-P and CL. (Results still to follow!)
Hi Matt, you say it's better to use an evf for critical focus, even when using a magnifier on the ovf? Thank you
Hey Sergio, yes as EVF is 100% accurate every time.
@@sergiovalle6982 For most lenses you will/ can use the OVF and even for this lens too. You just might miss a few shots that's all.

Nice! Very good rendering for arty portraits!
Amazing Glass.
Excellent Review.
Enormous Thanks.

Thanks Sam!
Great vid! Couldn’t agree more with the performance vs value. And great shots too 👍
Thanks Juan! :)
Hey man, I have a really rare lens, if you’re interested is a NIKKOR N. C 5cm F1.1 LTM!!!!!
Only 200 made with LTM mount.
Hi Manu, ah very cool. I think I saw this lens when I did my "exotic rare lenses" video. I would be too scared to use it if it's that rare!
Great video Matt!
Thanks Colton!
Hi Matt, are you still using this lens? Worth it?
Absolutely!! See my recent "Boys, Toys .." video, it gets mentioned in that. Brilliant lens on the SL. (See blog post on MrLeica.com too for full res images)
It would probably make a great door stop or paper wieght.
Haha, yes that too :)
Could the "gold" lens mount be meant to look like brass? Just a thought...
If you are trying to make Brass into Gold, NO! but vice versa, if the intention is to bring gold out of brass, WHY NOT!
Just another thought...
I think no, I think it was supposed to look bling but I might be wrong.
Matt, what flas were you using in the video on the SL?
Hi, Godox TT350 Nikon mount (see my Flash for Leica vids for more info)
I bought the cheaper 7artisans 50mm 1.1 at 1.2 very usable and half the weight
Me too! I'd love to see Matt compare the two. I think he'd be surprised again.
A very fun lens for sonnar fans. Soft corners, but for most portraits who cares.
Thanks Dave, nice. If I get to test one in the future I will be sure to share the results!
If I get the opportunity I will, no problem!
Yes for me I only need the centre sharp
Hello,im a big fan; I thank you very much for you permanent help. A question please do you think there is a way of using a TTArtisan 35mm 0.95 on a Leica M? Maybe with an adapter from L to M. Do you think its possible? And in a M39 LTM mount? Thank you
Thanks. You can always mount bigger formats to smaller but not smaller to bigger. So FF or MF on APS-C but not APS-C to M. (You can do APS-C L lens to FF L as the same mount**)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank you, and keep the channel alive, you are essential to us.
I have a Leica CL. So this would be like a 75mm on the CL. What are your thoughts. I know its going to
be front heavy. But still less weight than on my SL3. You can eliminate vignetting on an APS C camera You
lose some DOF but so what if you can nail focus
SL3? Can you please elaborate, photos and specification would be of interest.
Hi, I think it is too heavy for the CL but it will work of course. Yes you will get the centre sharpness and no vignetting being APS-C. You would hold the lens and not the camera. Is SL3 a typo?
Yes my fat fingers on my tiny notebook
Did the typo it's an Sl2.
I have the silver version and can confirm the lens mount is also gold (unfortunately…).
Ah thanks Alexander, oh dear. Thanks for confirming that. They probably thing it adds a bit of bling!
Excellent review. I really appreciate seeing the side by side comparison shots. I also like the explanation of which Leica cameras each lens is best suited for.
Thanks! Glad it helped

Ah thanks Tony!
I'd buy it used, you can get it for just over £150
I bet, yes Chinese lenses sell super cheap used.
Have you tried the ttartisan 50mm 1.4 ? Is it as good as the summilux?
Hi Alexander, I've not but realistically it wont match the Summilux exactly wide open at f1.4 but I think I hear that it's still great for the money. The Lux has still beat every lens I ever tested from all brands at f1.4. By f2 other brands win. (Voigtlander APO)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I’d love to see you review and compare! I think you’d be the only one to do the review justice
This is a great video.
Thanks!
nice video, again !
Thanks, yes the Summilux is still king I think! :)
FWIW, I think the VL 50f1.0 has much nicer IQ to my eyes.
Good.
Ha thanks Carlos, yes once I use my APO more I will do a follow up vid. Great lens
F0.95....Wow! Looks like a great lens for portraits! Love your work! If I'm ever in England, you're hired! Lol.
Haha thanks Lucy! Let me know when you will visit and see you then! :)
Thanks, interesting thought. For you M4 you just calibrate the camera to the lens. See my calibration video.

A snob flounces... 🤣
Keep them coming.
