    I have a 6400, and when I tell you, I struggled with video quality because I was copying some YTuber's settings.😂😂😂😂 I had to reset the settings and go down back to neutral. You are right. Neutral is flexible and easier to control in post. Too many people go for the saturated look and have a hard time color grading afterwards. Great video.

      Exactly. Some of those settings are really crazy. You”ll start thinking something is wrong with your camera lol. I’m glad this was helpful

    Thanks for the video Luke. You are the first YTer I've watched that talked about making you video "neutral", particularly if you are using different cameras. I'm shooting my band playing tomorrow with 3 cameras and I've always had issues matching colours. Thanks and cheers.

    a9 does not have PP. does shooting at DR5 Creative style Neutral -3-3+0 makes it look good or easy to edit? can you make a comment about it?

      @@LukeAireFilms will do and thank you! Question for you. What codec do you use for the best quality - XAVC S-I? Been trying to determine if it is worth it to get a NinjaV+ or invest in the Type A cards and shoot in SLOG 3

      I suggest reading books. It's the most effective way to learn grading. Videos in yt will help but they usually skip on important fundamental theories.

      Thank you so much. I have some other videos on color grading on my channel. Perhaps have a look. If I still haven't answered your question, then let me know and I"ll do one to achieve that

      To answer your question in reference to S-LOG: Basically, get your exposure correct however you choose to do it and then simply expose it down by 2 stops using the same method. Personally, I use ISO settings and/or ND filter to expose down. The drawback with S-LOG is that you sometimes can't see what you are doing because it is exposed down so you need to compensate by using it integrated method in the settings or use a external monitor that has a the ability to use LUTs.
      Unfortunately, my a6300 doesn't have a very accurate or bright enough screen, so using it for it LUTs isn't great. I use the external monitor method and a LUT specifically for S-LOG 2 8-bit that was designed and tested/calibrated by a user on UA-cam. I forgot his username but if you are interested I can email it to you if you like.
      Also, don't use S-LOG in general unless its in bright outside scenes. Go for Cine4 instead of S-LOG 2 from inside shots that are typically lower light and stylised by some form of standard warm light or more natural LED light. Cine1-4 expose more towards the shadows when highlights aren't the emphasis. Basically, Sony's answer to ProRes or any other lightly compressed video codec was/is mutiple S-LOG and Cine profiles that can be used cleverly depending the scene. The camera only has 100 Mbps (12.5 MB/s) of data information to work with as a non-Cinema camera so it makes perfect sense why they provided them even though the company does a very poor job explaining how to use them properly.

    I laughed like crazy at the "pee pee" segment: immediately brought my thoughts to something that is not camera related 😁🤣😂
    I have the a6300 since 2017 and your explanation is like a breath of fresh air. I will follow your advice and a video of the results will follow, with a mention of your name.

    I'm a beginner with a Sony A7III with Sigma Art 2.8 24-70mm. I noticed with the S-log 2 that I lose autofocus quite easily and with HLG3 my focus is better. Not sure why, do you have any idea?

    • @LukeAireFilms
      @LukeAireFilms  9 місяців тому +1

      Hmm. If I had to guess. The autofocus system probably works with the contrast of the image, so the less contrast (like filming in slog) the harder it might be for it to grab focus. Try turning on the Gamma assist function and see if that will help. Also some lenses are better with autofocus than others. My Sigma 30mm f1.4 struggles with autofocus compared to the Sigma 16mm

      Yuppp Slog-2 and 3 are affecting the af. I’m using it on a7iii even wuth slog assist it focuses slow. I think they have turned into Contrast based af if using slog on a7iii,riii and lower models.

    I actually still have the a6300 and have no idea what I’m doing so this was super helpful as a cheat code. Idk how you shot such cinematic shots with the thing haha. I guess the trick is color grading which I’ll have to learn how to do

      I'm glad this was helpful.
      A lot of trial and error brother lol. And also invest in good lenses, it also helps. My lenses now are:
      Sigma 30mm f1.4
      Sigma 16mm f1.4
      Sony 50mm f1.8
      You can start with the Sigma 30mm f1.4 like I did and after sometime, save up to get others
      Its really sharp and allows for really nice shallow DOF
      The autofocus though can be unreliable unlike other lenses but 80% of the time, it nails it

    I'm just begging and little knowledge with color correction, will this still work in standard profile as well or only in PP7?

    • @LukeAireFilms
      @LukeAireFilms  9 місяців тому

      Well if I'm not mistaking, 'Standard profile' with Sony usually means No Color Profile lol. So no I don't think it would work. However, filming without a color profile actually gives some of the best colors that the Sony sensor has to offer, the downside is that its in the color space called Rec709 and there isn't so much you can do with it.
      I do have a video where I addressed working with Rec709 footage though , see if it's helpful to you. -ua-cam.com/video/RVbNwQg5ey4/v-deo.html

    You come dy fear me to use Slog3
    I want to know why

    • @LukeAireFilms
      @LukeAireFilms  9 місяців тому

      Lol. Firstly you don't want to be shooting slog3 with 8 bit. You should be using 10bit but a lot of these alpha mirrorless only do 8bit. Secondly, it's very noisy, so you want to be at least two stops overexposed when shooting in order to get a clean properly exposed image after color correcting - and so ideally you"ll need an external monitor with an Slog3 lut to properly expose and monitor your image
