@@archersterling6726 It's an excellent strategy; whoever uses propaganda tries to take someone who disagrees and make them into an island. Two choices become apparent: either give up the fight and join the mob or dig in even harder and become the tin-foil hat wearing loonie that they claim you are. Gamers have, for the most part, chosen the hidden third option and told the propagandists that THEY are the island.
Unfortunately for them, they're finding out the very hard way that we're not alone as they try to present us as and they themselves are the ones who are alone since *WE OUT NUMBER THEM AND ALWAYS HAD FROM THE START!* And as much these loudmouths don't want to admit it or accept it, they need us far more then we need them since on their own, they're absolutely *_NOTHING!_* And us rejecting their nonsense no matter how hard they push it on us and how much browbeating and finger wagging they do against us is a cold harsh reminder to them of that. Isn't it funny that these journalists slammed Ghost of Tsuhsima but the Japanese loved it. Then came along Assassin's creed shadows and they praise/defend it but the Japanese hate it. They're the real bigots.

Tsushima was done right we loved it and still do.. AC shadows is wrong on so many levels seasons rice using places that were dennyed the okay to use and the lies about yasuke and so much more the list of wrongs in that game are long. Now we might not want Yotei as well.

Here is the problem with the gaming industry:
They hire a bunch of woke women. Then they make games that appeal to them, not us. Then they laugh about it. They tell us, "If you don't like it, don't buy it." And when their games fail, they blame us.
The games industry hasn’t changed these people have been there the entire time. The difference is that the corporate companies are recognizing them and putting them upfront and that’s a problem.
@nicholasrenaud8382 I was watching Deus Ex: Human Revolution's credits. They have a picture of the development team. All white men. Fast forward to any modern game today and see the difference. Adam Jensen was a man and talked like a man. His girlfriend, Dr. Reed, uses him to advance her career while the guy is worried about her throughout the game. You can't have that kind of female character today. That's the type of insight that only comes from a man.
Not just feminists they hire a bunch talentless activist hacks whose greatest achievement was drawing on paper telling how they hate themselves and the world.
And then they seem to be honestly surprised when they are losing their jobs, or other bad things happen.

Notice they didn’t replace Aloy with a male protagonist after the success of HZD. Yet they replace Jin with a female protagonist after the success of GOT. Then on top of that they cast a radical, far left activist to voice the character. Then there are rumors of SBI involvement. Yeah, gamers notice things like this and it throws up red flags. Maybe the game will be excellent. I hope it is. But generally when the woke activists get their claws into something they run it promptly into the ground.
The game could be a 10/10 but if SBI are involved I won't buy it. I'm not supporting anything they touch.

No, but they did change her looks from female into something utterly bland, resembling both a woman ánd a man. Because men praised her looks and the activists can't have that. It's the same with modern movies and series: the main characters are, like some critics aptly call it, THEORETICAL females, because they have been masculined to the max: male jawlines, formless shapes, masculine clothes and last but not least male behaviour. Added to that is the fiction that flawless tiny females are só ridiculously overpowered that they can one-punch hulking males that outweigh them 2 or even 3 times and it isn't hard to see why people don't like these characters.

We've been watching the same movie for at the very least 5 years (more like 10) and they wonder why people had a negative reaction to it?
I'm entirely done with games that flirt with political correctness/DEI. I won't even bother with them anymore, I'll either go back to 10 year old games, or find companies that aren't caving to it.
Agreed, the silver lining it's given me is all of the great games in my backlog are way cheaper to buy and I have an excuse to play them. Pretty much everything I play now is from 2017 and before. The only new games I even look at are all non-western games.

I would add that they used to also be _rare._ which was a far more accurate representation of gamers (which are mostly male). Now, you can barely find a game that lets you play a man, let alone a masculine one.

@@SammEater As far as I'm concerned that has already happened. Almost all the games I have gotten for the past decade have been indie or smaller studios. Most of the newer titles of long standing favorite franchises, I would rather play an older version.

I do not believe saying it's woke deligitimzes any complaint. Woke is simple way of saying propaganda. And it is propaganda. It's meant to push men into seeing themselves as less heroic, and women as more heroic. But more to the point its boring. And frankly, I could care less about how authentic the game. I do NOT WANT female protagonist any more. I just dont want one.

That type won't be swayed. Remember these are people who'd prefer facts didn't exist. So best bet is mock them and leave. I'm a chef and can say from personal experience that when dealing with marketing people at the very least, "we need to reach a modern/wider audience" really just means "I don't know how to market to anyone besides myself, let's market to my self-insert instead". It's probably the biggest reason that they get so defensive when you criticize their self-insert marketing, because they're taking it personally.
They're doing what appeals directly to them, with absolutely zero thought given to whether anyone _else_ will actually like it. This is how Concord got made.
When I played Metroid back in the day and learned Samus Aran was a girl, my first thought was "Samus is a weird name for a girl" and then started playing another round.
In the days when 90% of boys' properties didn't have hamfisted female protagonists randomly that you're not allowed to notice. When it was interesting variety and not dishonest and agenda-driven. When the creative spark was actually followed genuinely.

Tsushima was a massive hit here in Japan it is the opposite of what that guy was saying he has 0 clue it sold so well in fact here in Japan it was off the shelf many times in many stores. yodabashi, Geo Tsutaya all seemed to be sold out for months. No one wants AC shadows as it has to many problems with everything inculding adding in chinses buildings and structures. And now i am slowly seeing a turn off for yotei as well. We wanted a 2nd part for Jins story on the main land with Jin marry Yuna who saved his life and was by his side and even taught him the ways of the ghost as well as started the story. They could have started a group of ghosts and then had kids to carry on the legacy.
Would’ve been cool. Some companies are just allergic to profits, though.

"That guy" is a woman claiming to be trans, claiming to be half Japanese but apparently born and raised in Alaska, so American and uses a pseudonym Japanese name (apparently an anime character - no surprise). As much an 'expert' on Japan as the one who wrote the Yasuke fanfiction and consulted on AC Shadows, an English bloke.
Don't forget Stellar Blade in the roster of games that came out this year and rejected activism in favor of legitimate creativity and entertainment.
Hopefully other AA companies will see the opening in gaming and decide to fill the void with what we want

We're critical because these people making these decisions aren't doing them to make the games better (they're usually worse as a result), but to make themselves and other people that don't make or play the games feel better.

Progressives and Libertarians in fact both have skewed moral compasses across the six psychological virtues. Progressives overvalue Care and Fairness and either don't care about or actively disdain the other four, whilst Libertarians put Liberty above all to such an extent that it ironically harms Liberty too.
I truly believe that if this isn't all just being pushed by DEI funding requirements, that there are some truly out of touch people in the gaming industry whether it be in developer or publishing companies that believe their younger employees who tell them the false narrative that women make up 50% of gamers.
It's been shown again and again that at most they come to about 25% and that's depending on where the surveys are taken. I don't have a problem with a company making games to try and target the female gamer audience, but I do take issue when the repeatedly take games and franchises that were created for a male audience, and then try to turn them into female centric ones for no legitimate reason.
...that and I'm sure there's a bit of the misandrist "pale and male is stale" mentality running around the employees of these companies, and they want to stick it to the people they dislike.
They only ever get more than 10% of the market share if you include mobile games. And of those gamers, most (like over 60%) are asian females addicted to mobile games.
All of this stuff only exists for as long as it does because of external funding by those who benefit from the propaganda (ESG funding, etc).
It's said elsewhere but the point of propaganda isn't to unite the sheep, but to create islands of those who are sensible.

Honestly, I agree with you. As a black guy who hates all this toxic identity politics from wokeness, it's understandable that many gamers have become reactionary whenever western media pushes a female/diverse character due to the unfortunate (and intentional) association of such characters with western toxic identity politics 😞 However, we need to dial it back before we end up as toxic as the very same people who have been pushing this stuff (wokeness and division) We never assume Japanese or Korean or Chinese media with plenty of female and diverse characters are woke and we should try to extend this to western media as well. Verify before you criticize because the tides are turning and we are gradually winning but we should not ruin our chances.
Its one of the reasons I bought a PS3 and started to buy some classic games that included collections of ps2 games.
Best way to go these days. Even if games aren't "woke" now, they sure are crap compared to games of old.
That's why I never got rid of my older consoles ive still got my ps3 with all my trilogies on there. And I've also got my ps2 still to this day games just aren't even close to what used to be made anymore.

Its just how I felt playing Horizon Forbidden West recently. I had no problem with Aloy being the protagonist in the first game. She was a greater warrior than the men sure, but she was an exception. But why nearly every warrior, general or war chief you find in the sequel a women? Are you seriously telling me that in a world where humans fight with bows and spears, there are as many if not more female warriors than men? GTFO. When inclusivity comes at the cost of believability and world building, it just feels like obnoxious pandering and agenda pushing.
Ok, so you have a video game in which you fight large metal beasts in a dystopian future, using all sorts of tech and you complain about its believability that there are just as many strong women as there are men? That's hilarious. 🙂

Settings where women are overall physical equals to men are a case-by-case basis, regardless of if there's fantastical elements to it or not, and requires being loose with fundamental human physiology, either getting away with taking liberties in a cartoonish kind of way, or actually having a specific explanation for it like consistent enhancing magic or powers (but still might be taking some liberties even then). By your disingenuous argument, any and all grounding can immediately go out the window the moment a sci-fi/fantasy element is introduced. You don't really believe that. And we're all noticing it's a very deliberate ideological choice, not an organic creative decision, at this point.

This is also why people that say, "if Return of the King came out today people would say it's woke because of Eowyn killing the Witch King!" No. Not only was that what Tolkien wrote, it was a special moment to see a woman have a badass scene in a movie otherwise filled with men having badass scenes. Now it's rare to see a female character that isn't an all powerful girlboss.

As someone whom also has been gaming from late 80s you're spot on. We always had great female characters and never made a big deal about it like what's happening now, which for us looking on is just plain weird behaviour like the past never existed or something. It was us gamers of 80s/90s that made icons of Lara Croft and Samus not these clowns today :-)
I remember in Kingdom Come: Deliverance that there was a DLC where you played as a woman. What was made immediately apparent was that unless you possessed an extreme mastery of the mechanics of the game, she would lose in basically any straight up melee fight. Sneaking, backstabbing and engaging from a distance with a hunting bow was the way to go, and the game pulled no punches in telling you that while being a man in war is really bad, being a woman in war often ends worse.
Yeah, melee fighting with her and winning was an accomplishment up there with beating up the drunk in the tutorial bar brawl without grinding, and that was deliberate. She was a straight-played fantasy rogue.

The problem is with forced female protagonists in strength-requiring roles - such as Samurai - coupled with hyper realistic graphics. A space faring laser-blasting 8-bit girl in a robot suit is less of a problem for two main reasons: 1) hypothetical technology making the female lack of physical strength less of an issue, 2) the primitive graphics of earlier consoles never assuming that the depicted heroine being realistic.
This is the most important thing to remember we've evolved the ability to see patterns in order to survive. And it's coming in real handy these days. We're just doing what our brains were meant to do see the things that are obvious and put them together. The people who can't see it haven't evolved differently they just choose to ignore it. I guess that's what being a part of the modern audiences, ignoring our true instincts.

The exact same has been happening with movies, look at all the marvel flops and the immense success of stuff like Maverick. Also I feel like I should point out Stellar Blade as a success, it was the first game the studio has made (that is not a phone game), and it didn't cost much to make.
What's particularly interesting is looking at videos discussing the recent phenomenon of women not understanding what "POV" means, and doing those "POV" videos where they're actually just pointing a camera at themselves.
Looking at the broader research, what becomes apparent is that men - contrary to common misconceptions - are actually better at empathising with others, or at least at seeing things from their perspective. Why? Because men evolved to be the hunters, and what's really really important when hunting? Having an intuitive sense of what your prey might be thinking, what it might be able to see from its location, and whether or not it knows you're there.
How is this relevant to gaming?
Men have no trouble playing as female characters. Or frogs. Or weird little alien dudes with their lips stitched. Or raw geometric forms. Cars. Tanks. Animals. Whatever the player character is in a game, men are fine with it, so long as it plays well and the character itself doesn't push hard against their values in an artificial way. Because men evolved to be very comfortable with the concept of seeing things through someone else's eyes.
Women and less-than-masculine men on the other hand keep pushing for "representation"; such people seem to struggle with the fundamental idea of empathising with someone that doesn't mirror them. Put simply, they seem to prefer to see themselves than to seeing others.
I don't care politics, that's a real world stuff. I play to evade the real world and they're bringing this into my games to drive my opinions ? Bad move, they'll learn how my wallet drives their lives.
*I just want to have FUN in my games.* If I wanted to be preached at I'd go to church; if I wanted politics I would listen to the news.

I dont laugh at any of it any more. Its happening too often. I simply decided where to spend and where not to spend my money. They are getting crafty now though, presenting one sort of game then bringing in something else that is totally opposite. Its false advertising. One company will do it blatantly one day, enough so, that it will bring the whole house of cards crumbling to the ground. I hope its soon so games can return to being fantasy based and not a mirror of the real world.

In regard to your soccer game analogy. I was told something by my Chief in the Navy. Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three time is enemy action.
The modern games industry is equivalent to walking a minefield. We can't just be ignorant, or blissful, and believe things are going great. That's how we have things come up from out of nowhere and ruin our day. So now, the gaming industry has driven us to where we need to mind where we step or go. And it's an unhealthy mindset to have in the entertainment industry. But they have driven folks like me to it. And I refuse to pay $60-70 for every single game that comes out now.
They will need to earn that money out of me, or I will give them what I THINK they deserve. If the game doesn't come off to me as a $60-70 experience, I may bite for $40-50. Or I may bite for $30-40. Or even $20-30. In the end, I decide what their experience is worth in my eyes. Because my backlog is already huge, and has grown faster than I finish it, simply because I have waited until games got cheap enough in many cases for me to care. And more often than not, I've gotten my money's worth then.
I'm tired of buggy messes that need patches to get competent enough to play. I'm tired of seeing the same type of game with just a different coat of paint. I'm tired of getting lectured when I just want to play a game. And mark my words, the game industry is coming to a reckoning for at least these big studios, the titans that built it up over decades. Maybe it's here now, or it's coming. But it will be there.
As we know there were thousands of female Samurai, women can fight men equally and would not just instantly be overpowered and lose. Why wouldn't the men want the women fighting instead of looking after the kids at home?

I've been in many different types of jobs. Military, Hospitality, Trucking, I.T., etc. One thing that never changes. You must react to the customer appropriately. Even in a internal support job, like I.T., the customers are your fellow employees. They are not happy when things are not working right. Is the customer always right? No. But are they going to spend their money when you make them feel ignorant or bad? No. This is what leaves me baffled by the people in charge of entertainment right now. Percentages matter. Around the world, the highest density of LGBAlphabet people is like 7.5%. Why are you going to shoehorn yourself into that market? Making the other 92.5% of customers mad.

I was about to comment about iconic female characters born in the 90s and he beat me to it. If people didnt like female characters Lara would not have been that popular or Jill Valentine would not be the most played character in Resident Evil... just saying. But if they were actual gamers and not just activists, they would know that
More people would have played Chris if the game was honest (like the original JP Biohazard) and admitted that the character select was a difficulty toggle, with Jill being the easy mode. Most people think it's just "extra slots versus more health" but Jill gets more generous item drops than Chris does too.

I really enjoyed the game Gears Tactics, it was a great take on the XCOM formula set in Gears of War but omfg the forced diversity in that game is unbearable. Rescued soldiers look exactly like SBI employees, and there’s an unusually high number of women for a Gears of War game.
Also one of the main characters is a black woman. By itself that isn’t bad, but her behavior is as annoying as it is predictable. Her first and last line in the game calls the two male leads f*cists, she’s framed as the best shot in the game, and she just so happens to have 2 doctorates because of course she does.
Contrast that to early examples like Hunter: The Reckoning and you didn’t have disrespectful nonsense like that. In that game you had a young black woman cop, a middle aged white biker, a teenage Japanese party girl, and an old Latino priest, and all of them were badass and authentic.
Everyone recognises the pattern of who is behind this and who is funding it.
