I'm not white, but not once in my years of gaming have I thought "Why does my character not have my skin color?" A character doesn't need to have my skin color to relate and empathize to them.
I'm Portuguese so I have never seen a main character with my nationality and yet it never bothered me once. I'm all about enganging gameplay. If people are so worried about the protagonist's color or nationality, just play games where you have a character creator
As a girl, I never cared less about the gender of the characters. My most favourite games have male characters. I really don't see a reason why I should care.
I was a journalist reporting on this as far back as 2014. They ran my name through the mud and worked extra hard for 5 years to cancel me until I quit from the stress. Glad to see mainstream folks waking up to this.

Start up a yt Channel covering games and give honest opinions. Don't put your name out there, and while you need to leave the chat available, don't look at any of it. As long as you are honest and cover a good variety of games, you will likely be a good source to point to for game credit. Do be sure to explain your 1 to 10 scale. A 5 for me is average, I know people who see a 7 or 8 as average, and most game journalists see a 9.5 as average, but any scale is good as long as you inform the listener/ veiwer as to what the numbers mean.

I stayed away from Days Gone for so long even though I purchased it the morning it was released, mainly due to all the negative reviews from critics. I started playing it about a week ago, and it has single-handedly been one of the best gaming experiences I've had in recent memory. There's a reason it has a 93% Very Positive rating out of 50,000 reviews on Steam - it's actually a very good game.
Agreed. I recently got it myself, so I guess missed the whole "patching" period.. But despite what it may have started out as, right now it is a badass game. And I got it on sale on steam for 15 bucks during a sale, had to buy it. Best 15 bucks I've spent in a while!
Console gaming needs vote based review systems (maybe some system exists, but not similar to steam) so badly. But I'm sure that's never going to happen.
Exactly, I played Days Gone about a year ago as it was on my Steam list and finally got around to playing it. I have not been that emotionally engaged in a game's character in a long time.

I used to work at Riot games and would say the problem is very multifaceted. We used to be a pretty normal happy company until gaming journalists (specifically Kotaku) did multiple exposes on the 'sexism' inside our culture. Now, I'm a woman and Kotaku actually set up a call with me to talk about my experience, and I told them it was great working there and felt it was more meritocratic than anywhere else I'd been before Of course they didn't include that and continued to speak to current and past employees to find whatever they could to fit their narrative Now what company WOULDN'T have disgruntled employees, or instances of racism/sexism when you spoke individually and privately to past employees?? But this was used as a basis to organize a massive culture shift , and you can bet this impacted the game design decisions as well (which are usually made specifically by game designers btw, not developers)
Game designers ARE developers. They just do the most important job since it is ultimately the creativity and mechanics of a game that rakes in the dollars, not monotonous graphics and bugs work.

I wouldn't blame game design decisions on developers as they are a totally different group of people. would you consider artists developers because they contribute to the creativity of a game? I think it does a disservice both to software developers and game designers when we conflate development with design. they're two different fields completely even if they both contribute to a game being made. it gets murkier at smaller companies when they're the same person, but these big games discussed in the video are made by huge companies with specialized roles.

I've been working as game programmer for 5-6 years now. Most of these issues come from publisher. They always try to add stuff to a game that does not make sense for maximum profit and to please everyone in hope to reach wider audience and thus more profit. It never works. Most of them never have played a game!

As you get older... you start to realize that nothing will top the games of old... and replaying them endlessly is more enjoyable than over 95% of new games on their first playthrough.
As I get older, I've realized the best games coming out these days are small indie games. It takes more effort to sift through all of them to find the gems, but absolutely worth it!

So I think I have a right as an elder of the genre to say that most new games suck and I replay all the great oldies with gratitude and glee. Days Gone is the last game I purchased recently that was worth playing and replaying again and again..good taste girl! I played the Atari a little but my first real gaming days started with Wolfenstein on a Windows 3.1 computer that I had to manually load the autoexec.bat on to free up enough memory to get the game to run. Console gaming ruined gaming.

Probably why games are melding together, seeming more similar more and more as this continues. Battle pass is in every game almost, cosmetics, in game stores, lack of content in base games at full price, poor performance, etc. There is still good gaming but it's definitely worrying, I would say BF2042 is what made me realize it's no longer about making a fun game, but making something a money making machine with skins/operators while stripping fan beloved core series features

Funnily enough, being a white dude myself, I often change my game character to (A) a woman and (B) of different ethnicity. Why would I want to be "me" in the game? My real "me" is a boring slouch, not a dashing hero, so I'd rather be someone else in the games I play. what puzzles me is that some companies are bending to these crazy woke ideas and changing their products to have them pleased. The problem here is that they do not represent the gaming community and the real gamers are the ones affected by all these craziness in the end.

I totally agree. After i played the demo of harvestella, I was completely done with modern games. They couldn't even make the male character look male. There was no difference with non binary and male! So I'm on board. Retro games were also the time where games were games and movies accompanied by gameplay like more modern games are becoming.
Regarding the Spiderman PC flag replacement mod, it doesn't actually replace anything. The mod changes the localization from US to RUS. Meaning that a Russian version of the game is more American than the American one.
There are American flags in the original game as well. There's only one building with pride flags and so far as I recall it's two of the standard rainbow type no gay characters (that I can remember), no gay costumes, no race swapping or anything else. Insomniac themselves included it because one of there staff noticed this in real life in New York City and it was included likely for representation over anything else but ultimately was that small way to try dodging hate and now both sides hate them because the game wasn't woke enough and gamers think it's too woke for including a couple pride flags in one place in the game. Of course Insomniac Games had a very woke moment (you can as far as I know still find it on their channel here on YT) where Ted Price the CEO and Founder of the studio made a video "dunking" on then President Trump's Middle East travel ban. They got a bit of flak for that (also from me) in the comments section as well as from fans elsewhere telling Ted that he clearly didn't know what he was talking about citing the actual restrictions. Their games so far have stayed away from being "woke" in my personal opinion, but I'm personally worried that they could go woke in the future due to past virtue-signaling. I don't remember them getting a ton of flak for their women's day video which read like a "work for us" advert next to the tone-deaf travel ban video. It would be really bad if they made their next game "Marvel's Wolverine" woke.
Working in a software development company, I can tell that developers are the last people that can decide about anything they implement. Decisions like that are made by Product Managers, Project Managers, Marketing Managers or just the C-Level. And you are facing these kind of decisions in every software development company. Not just games. When starting the argument about the reasoning, you usually get responses like 'The product is selling anyways', 'It does not impact the functionality' or 'We need to catch up with competition'. Truth behind it is usually that these decisions are pushed by upper management people that are detached from the user base. Yes, they expect no change in sales. But they expect better partnership deals and more visibility. And that is why they prefer micro management decisions over user base driven decisions.
In the end, the user base is responsible for all this. If they don't like that, then they must refuse do pay for and play it. And if they don't pay for and play it, the management either produces a game nobody plays and get bankrupt or they change their product. There two decades ago (and probably way before) in my country there were zero issues when it came to homosexuality and such, basically it was accept people for who they were and it was fine. Now i can´t even leave the house without seeing some "pride" flags at shopping malls. The people with abnormal preferences being highlighted for how "special and amazing" they are and given special benefits. This "woke" acceptance movement did not make people more accepting of abnormals, it only made regular people repulsed by them.

The social agenda stuff is just obnoxious at this point just make the character and stick with it, if it's good is good if it's not it's not. No need to layer great stories in politics. Even better yet, a lot of my favorite games allow you to create your own character. I get that some of the big scale budget productions don't have the ability to implement a lot of this stuff. The funniest backfire I'd seen when it comes to woke devs in recent times was when someone made a "mod" in the Miles Morales Spider-Man game to replace the non-chevron Pride flag with an American flag... and it turns out that "mod" was just code from the Saudi version of the game.

Plenty of indies that aren't caving into the woke for new games, and a backlog of THOUSANDS of non-woke old games. We never have to buy a game released after 2022 (or hell, even earlier than that) again and never run out of games to play.

In the original edition of that Spiderman game, the flags were American - they made them pride flags for the remake - the mod just put them back how they originally appeared. Not only that, all they did to create the mod was copy some code from the Middle Eastern version of the remake. There's some pretty Orwellian connotations to all of that.
The original Sam Raimi Spiderman film conveniently released right after 9/11 and people rallied around him as a sort of patriotic symbol at a time where everyone felt like they needed a hero which likely played into the movie/franchise's success. Likely not the original intention of Raimi and everyone involved in making the film, that was what became the case after the fact, but it is comparable to how Spiderman is still being used to push narratives now.
It is said Days Gone sold more than any previous game Bend Studio ever made combined. Unless, Sony finally releases the actual sales tally, I think a sequel was cancelled only because of Sony's change in it's executive makeup. An important executive at Sony (Shawn Layden) was a big supporter for the Days Gone project. Him leaving doomed the chances of a sequel.

No need to lose hope. When something is oversaturated and brought down by modern issues, it creates a demand. Somebody can and will step into this and fill this demand. As long as people have platforms to speak on, the word will spread. Honestly, woke garbage is just temporary. It will actually collapse, since companies and studios take people for granted. At some point, they'll say enough is enough and simply not buy the game. Studios will realize they don't earn money - something they really, really need to keep going. And thus revert to actually solid narratives and fire people responsible for the downfall of their games.
This breaks my brain. They are literally taking over every avenue. I try to cancel this bull myself by not indulging in the platforms, programs, games etc. That involve this stupidity but I feel like I'm going to be watching paint dry pretty soon or playing older video games and watching older shows just to be able to avoid the insanity.

This is something I want to address when I get my comic book company off the ground. My goal is to take politics out of entertainment and just enjoy fun video games. A lot of games now are inferior in almost every conceivable way. They performance, narratives, etc are all annoying. I’m reaching out to modders and independent game developers to hopefully make games that at least has some heart in it.

I'm seeing this happen books as well. Ready Player One was such an amazing book that didn't have a sliver of woke BS in it. Ready Player Two on the other hand has an entire chapter of forced nonsense that sticks out like a sore thumb and adds no value to the book. Spoiler Alert!!! The book then ends with a very blatant transhumanism euphoria/utopia. I know I'm not the author and just a concerned citizen/fan of the first book, but I believe portions of the second book were a result of outside pressure.
I loveeee that you addressed this, it’s been such a problem it’s crazy what passes and games are suffering because of it, us gamers just want to have fun with a good story. Sometimes when you try to bring it up as a woman and even a man like my bf has tried in past you are downplayed and labeled negatively sometimes these developers have gone as far as to ban people that are respectful but disagree and bring up these concerns. It definitely feels like they are forcing us to conform to things sometimes, instead of create new cool diverse characters with interesting backgrounds, they want to force ideologies or identities and make that the only different thing and act as if it’s interesting, I just want to have fun, and to each their own, just don’t force it on me. I could go on about this for hours honestly, a lot of good stories have come out recently luckily, usually indie studios, but it’s definitely diamond in the rough situation lately with so many games lacking but trying so hard to publicly be inclusive and make that their whole thing. What’s more of a let down is when they only include certain groups of people in their studio to be diverse that don’t know the franchise well or don’t listen to lifelong supporters or concerns and penalize them then end up losing fanbase. Then us gamers are stuck watching their favorite games or even cool concept games go down the drain. It definitely feels they don’t listen or care for fans and even hate previous installments.
It’s the same with most of pop culture now. It’s depressing but games, TV, and movies just don’t feel as fun anymore. It’s fun to laugh at some of the stuff that’s at parody levels of bad with friends but I really don’t think we’re going to get any stories that we can fall in love with any time soon. Just bad fanfiction knockoffs, reboots, and pointless sequels.

Yeah, I have been shamed out of multiple forums for just disagreeing with all the political BS (was done respectfully too), they just up and banned me lol. Very few AAA studios left that haven't gone the "woke" route with FROMSOFTWARE, and the team behind FFXIV (Yoshi-P is directing Final Fantasy 16 aswell so hope is still there for now) being the few that are left. But yeah there are a lot of great Indies and also a ton of retro games aswell!
I have always played games as a means to get away from real world drama. I can enter another world full of its own lore. But now THE MESSAGE is heavily corrupting video games and making them so hard to enjoy. Just like with movies.
I used to work for a big developer of a very famous AAA game and I can tell you that the Studio heads were totally afraid of their employees. 3 major things happened I think to cause this. The introduction of aggressive DEI and zero tolerance harrassment polices, a shift to give employees more of a voice, and the addition of Diversity officers and departments. This led to the leaders relenting to any ridiculous idea or criticism of game content that ultimately harmed the product. The diversity team, and I'm not making this up, had as part of their initiatives a system whereby they could look at any content going in the game - from character models to sound effects - to make sure they couldn't offend anyone. I remember on one occasion an employee of color in a very low status position finding fault with one line of dialog that presented a black character in a dubious light and boom the next day the line was cut and we had to rerecord the line costing hundreds of thousands of dollars - actor, new facial capture, editing, etc. But the line was actually really cool and gave the character more depth. But no it had to go because it made the black guy look bad. There was also pressure at the Publisher level to become more woke and hiring writers to reflect this. It was a ww2 game and yet there was constantly directives from on high asking us to find ways to have women and people of color in the story. To force that in rather than just telling interesting stories. The average dev in the trenches was most likely not down with this but afraid to put their heads above the parapet for fear of being terminated. I could write pages about this.
This is actually terrifying. What is even happening to the world? Can this continue like this? Is it a good business model to have or how do you think it will effect the industry in the next 10-20-30 years?
Diversity Officers sound like dictators and thought police to me. This kind of stuff makes me think the only solution is developers are gonna have to go independent for the next decade or so in order to make the titles they want and get away from such insanity. It'll be a struggle but sometimes it's better to just start over if it means you don't have to be involved with a cult.
The Diversity departments that got implemented into companies is part of the woke agenda. They created a department and positions with salaries that serve no real purpose to the company and employees at all beyond their own self interest to continue to come up with reasons why they're even there to begin with.
You need to boycott. I'm a game developer since many years, working for one of the major companies in the world, the situation is getting serious, I'm in a minority at this point, HR is toxically woke, and overall the games industry has always been woke because funded with the money of woke people, but now is exploding, and the level of incompetence is raising drastically. The problem with your assumption anyway, is that they are doing this against the profit, which is not true, there is a lot of money on the woke plate, you need to boycott.
Honestly its weird cause having the country flags available was such a big thing in the OG MW2. It made me realise that the world was a lot more connected than I thought because I was finding players with flags from all around the world in my lobbies. I dont mind the pride flags honestly, but it doesnt sit well with me that they removed the country flags. Also funnily enough with the Spiderman mod, all it did was change it to the UAE version of the game so it was still using official code and assets that are just from that version of the game haha

You can google some of the lobbies where people where absolutely dunking on one another for a variety of reasons or things with all the slurs you could think of back then. Those that were doing so were still grown adults or teenagers that grew into adults and carried on those traditions, guaranteed alot of older streamers now were from those days and probably participated in those things whether they want to admit it or not. COD has always been known to be toxic, and honestly when compared to how it was back in 2008-2009, current MW2 is a childrens game. People had no filter, and I dont think we should have those filters because now the pendulum is swinging the otherway where we are talking about censorship.... The people of the alphabets or the leftist cult would be foaming at the mouth if MW2 of 2009 released today in its unadulterated format.
One good thing is that these woke games and the studios that support and make them are driving me to check out of gaming as a whole. I'm 35 so it's pushing me towards bettering myself physically and mentally. I still game but it's only a handful of games and they tend to be older games as well.

This is why 99% of games I play these days are indie titles. They are actually made with passion, for the players, and are designed with fun at the core, rather than profit or catering to investors and their "modern audience."

The Call of duty one is what really gets me. How do you make a military game with 0 American flags but 22 pride flags? And when you do have an American flag it's a destroyed one. These developers aren't hiding their agenda at all.

I bought Day's Gone on a sale recently and this game is totally underated, it has a fun gameplay, interesting plot, captivating characters, amazing graphics, when i finished the game i was like "man, why i never heard much about this game?"

One thing that comes to mind is when a new game that comes out, people get excited because of the representation they bring. What’s always drawn me to a game is story, gameplay, soundtrack and more importantly, character development and depth.
I am a 57 yr old female gamer who got into gaming to have something in common/talk about with my autistic son. Even though Gaming was a way for my son and I to spend time together, I frequently found it a therapeutic way to release stress and prevent overload (for myself and son). I don't want or need wokism to cause problems/anxiety/confusion or any other sort of BS in my life. Because of this (and a few other issues) I thoroughly vet every game before we think about buying it. I loose the fun of a blind play through, but I rather loose that then deal with other repercussions of wokeness.
I just finished a game called Judgment (it's on PSN) I suggest giving it a try. (It's a typical Yakuza game, but polished and leans more towards a melodrama than wacky comedy; where as the Yakuza series (and Yakuza: Like a Dragon) are more spit between wacky comedy and melodrama story telling.) Judgement and Yakuza series are a beat um up action game. Where as Like a Dragon is more a kin to a turned based JRPG, game (similar to Final Fantasy). Like a Dragon was also free last year thru PSN+.
I’m curious to what people think is “woke” is having a non-white protagonist woke? Is having the presence of a rainbow flag woke? Like in these games are they making you attend a pride parade? I’m confused. To me these items are just in the background. If the core gameplay is the same, what’s the issue? Do people have a problem with rainbow road in Mario cart? @@Tejmurthy445 for the spiderman example: for most people the problem isn't the existence of the flags in the game. The problem is that a mod changing them gets disabled and the creator banned. For cod, the problem isn't that these flags exist, the problem is that the developers went out of their way to include them, while including next to nothing else, showing a complete lack of desire to deliver to the fans. Often times the defenders of these practices hide behind the "it's for a good cause" excuse. But is it really? What do those flags change? Does anyone actually believe that seeing those will change someone's mind? The people who dislike it, will hate it even more when it's shoved in their faces in their "free time". The people who are indifferent most likely won't know or care about the meaning of those flags, so what is the point? I'll answer myself: turns out the "good cause" isn't actually the reason for people defending these changes. Instead it's just about talking down on those who don't support these changes and making people feel better about themselves for being on the "right side".

If my son has played a game like "Call of Duty" which has ties to the American military and then plays the next iteration of the game which has eliminated the American flag or shown it in a disrespectful light, I guarantee I will be asked "Why the change?" or "Why the disrespect?". When anything makes him question his value as a human being because he isn't the right skin color, has been brought up to respect God and country, believes there is value in this way of life, Mama Bear will get very angry and defend him at all cost. My son has a mind like a steel trap and remembers things in minute detail. I have no way to avoid these types of questions so I take precautions to prevent their effects before they happen as much as possible. As I said before, I am only speaking for myself. Wokism has a lot of hidden repercussions that many don't think about.

My aunt was a school teacher in Ohio through the 70's to the early 2000's it's weird to someone outside of the US like me to see this cult like behaviour. Other countries especially in Europe wave their flags to special occasions or football matches, but it's nowhere near as "culty" as the US .
@@theblackbaron4119 I happen to be German and view the recitation of the pledge of allegiance in school as a very good practice in the spirit of unity. The kids see differently looking people around them, but they all recite together and they are all the same in front of the law, as Americans. That's something that is missing in Europe. We have huge subcultures here, who don't feel as Germans, even though they were born here. They call themselves foreigners and distinguish very clearly between Germans and their own, often based on skin color and appearance. In extreme cases they disdain the law and follow Sharia in case of muslims or other codes of behavior that often conflict with german laws. I for one think, if you immigrate to a different country, you should assimilate and a ritual like the pledge before class is a good tool for that. Children of migrants to the US identify as Americans at much higher rates then migrants to other countries.

I’m a brown guy from a developing country, and I have a personal issue with the critics who trashed Days Gone. Me and my little nephew (I’m 31 and my nephew is 10) played and bonded over Days Gone like no other activity! Watching him bash in the heads of kid zombies with a baseball bat was the best thing ever! 😂😅 We even started calling each other Deak and Boozer. Not once did we think that these people (on the screen) were different from us. It was a game and we enjoyed it!
We need to support Japanese gaming companies and get them to make their versions of COD. Their culture generally doesn't give a shit about woke pandering. For example their anime is hated by lots of western reviewers because in Japan they worship the female form.

I'm not white, but not once in my years of gaming have I thought "Why does my character not have my skin color?" A character doesn't need to have my skin color to relate and empathize to them.

As long as you are honest and cover a good variety of games, you will likely be a good source to point to for game credit.
Do be sure to explain your 1 to 10 scale. A 5 for me is average, I know people who see a 7 or 8 as average, and most game journalists see a 9.5 as average, but any scale is good as long as you inform the listener/ veiwer as to what the numbers mean.

I stayed away from Days Gone for so long even though I purchased it the morning it was released, mainly due to all the negative reviews from critics. I started playing it about a week ago, and it has single-handedly been one of the best gaming experiences I've had in recent memory. There's a reason it has a 93% Very Positive rating out of 50,000 reviews on Steam - it's actually a very good game.
Agreed. I recently got it myself, so I guess missed the whole "patching" period.. But despite what it may have started out as, right now it is a badass game. And I got it on sale on steam for 15 bucks during a sale, had to buy it. Best 15 bucks I've spent in a while!
Console gaming needs vote based review systems (maybe some system exists, but not similar to steam) so badly. But I'm sure that's never going to happen.

I used to work at Riot games and would say the problem is very multifaceted. We used to be a pretty normal happy company until gaming journalists (specifically Kotaku) did multiple exposes on the 'sexism' inside our culture. Now, I'm a woman and Kotaku actually set up a call with me to talk about my experience, and I told them it was great working there and felt it was more meritocratic than anywhere else I'd been before
Of course they didn't include that and continued to speak to current and past employees to find whatever they could to fit their narrative
Now what company WOULDN'T have disgruntled employees, or instances of racism/sexism when you spoke individually and privately to past employees?? But this was used as a basis to organize a massive culture shift , and you can bet this impacted the game design decisions as well (which are usually made specifically by game designers btw, not developers)

Game designers ARE developers. They just do the most important job since it is ultimately the creativity and mechanics of a game that rakes in the dollars, not monotonous graphics and bugs work.

I think it does a disservice both to software developers and game designers when we conflate development with design. they're two different fields completely even if they both contribute to a game being made. it gets murkier at smaller companies when they're the same person, but these big games discussed in the video are made by huge companies with specialized roles.

I've been working as game programmer for 5-6 years now. Most of these issues come from publisher. They always try to add stuff to a game that does not make sense for maximum profit and to please everyone in hope to reach wider audience and thus more profit. It never works. Most of them never have played a game!

As I get older, I've realized the best games coming out these days are small indie games. It takes more effort to sift through all of them to find the gems, but absolutely worth it!

I played the Atari a little but my first real gaming days started with Wolfenstein on a Windows 3.1 computer that I had to manually load the autoexec.bat on to free up enough memory to get the game to run. Console gaming ruined gaming.

Probably why games are melding together, seeming more similar more and more as this continues. Battle pass is in every game almost, cosmetics, in game stores, lack of content in base games at full price, poor performance, etc. There is still good gaming but it's definitely worrying, I would say BF2042 is what made me realize it's no longer about making a fun game, but making something a money making machine with skins/operators while stripping fan beloved core series features

Funnily enough, being a white dude myself, I often change my game character to (A) a woman and (B) of different ethnicity. Why would I want to be "me" in the game? My real "me" is a boring slouch, not a dashing hero, so I'd rather be someone else in the games I play. what puzzles me is that some companies are bending to these crazy woke ideas and changing their products to have them pleased. The problem here is that they do not represent the gaming community and the real gamers are the ones affected by all these craziness in the end.

I totally agree. After i played the demo of harvestella, I was completely done with modern games. They couldn't even make the male character look male. There was no difference with non binary and male! So I'm on board. Retro games were also the time where games were games and movies accompanied by gameplay like more modern games are becoming.
Regarding the Spiderman PC flag replacement mod, it doesn't actually replace anything. The mod changes the localization from US to RUS. Meaning that a Russian version of the game is more American than the American one.

There are American flags in the original game as well. There's only one building with pride flags and so far as I recall it's two of the standard rainbow type no gay characters (that I can remember), no gay costumes, no race swapping or anything else. Insomniac themselves included it because one of there staff noticed this in real life in New York City and it was included likely for representation over anything else but ultimately was that small way to try dodging hate and now both sides hate them because the game wasn't woke enough and gamers think it's too woke for including a couple pride flags in one place in the game.
Of course Insomniac Games had a very woke moment (you can as far as I know still find it on their channel here on YT) where Ted Price the CEO and Founder of the studio made a video "dunking" on then President Trump's Middle East travel ban. They got a bit of flak for that (also from me) in the comments section as well as from fans elsewhere telling Ted that he clearly didn't know what he was talking about citing the actual restrictions.
Their games so far have stayed away from being "woke" in my personal opinion, but I'm personally worried that they could go woke in the future due to past virtue-signaling. I don't remember them getting a ton of flak for their women's day video which read like a "work for us" advert next to the tone-deaf travel ban video.
It would be really bad if they made their next game "Marvel's Wolverine" woke.

Working in a software development company, I can tell that developers are the last people that can decide about anything they implement.
Decisions like that are made by Product Managers, Project Managers, Marketing Managers or just the C-Level. And you are facing these kind of decisions in every software development company. Not just games.
When starting the argument about the reasoning, you usually get responses like 'The product is selling anyways', 'It does not impact the functionality' or 'We need to catch up with competition'.
Truth behind it is usually that these decisions are pushed by upper management people that are detached from the user base. Yes, they expect no change in sales. But they expect better partnership deals and more visibility. And that is why they prefer micro management decisions over user base driven decisions.
They expect Blackrock money for the improved ESG scores.

And if they don't pay for and play it, the management either produces a game nobody plays and get bankrupt or they change their product. There two decades ago (and probably way before) in my country there were zero issues when it came to homosexuality and such, basically it was accept people for who they were and it was fine.

The funniest backfire I'd seen when it comes to woke devs in recent times was when someone made a "mod" in the Miles Morales Spider-Man game to replace the non-chevron Pride flag with an American flag... and it turns out that "mod" was just code from the Saudi version of the game.

In the original edition of that Spiderman game, the flags were American - they made them pride flags for the remake - the mod just put them back how they originally appeared. Not only that, all they did to create the mod was copy some code from the Middle Eastern version of the remake. There's some pretty Orwellian connotations to all of that.

The original Sam Raimi Spiderman film conveniently released right after 9/11 and people rallied around him as a sort of patriotic symbol at a time where everyone felt like they needed a hero which likely played into the movie/franchise's success. Likely not the original intention of Raimi and everyone involved in making the film, that was what became the case after the fact, but it is comparable to how Spiderman is still being used to push narratives now.

It is said Days Gone sold more than any previous game Bend Studio ever made combined. Unless, Sony finally releases the actual sales tally, I think a sequel was cancelled only because of Sony's change in it's executive makeup. An important executive at Sony (Shawn Layden) was a big supporter for the Days Gone project. Him leaving doomed the chances of a sequel.

This is something I want to address when I get my comic book company off the ground. My goal is to take politics out of entertainment and just enjoy fun video games. A lot of games now are inferior in almost every conceivable way. They performance, narratives, etc are all annoying. I’m reaching out to modders and independent game developers to hopefully make games that at least has some heart in it.

I'm seeing this happen books as well. Ready Player One was such an amazing book that didn't have a sliver of woke BS in it. Ready Player Two on the other hand has an entire chapter of forced nonsense that sticks out like a sore thumb and adds no value to the book. Spoiler Alert!!! The book then ends with a very blatant transhumanism euphoria/utopia. I know I'm not the author and just a concerned citizen/fan of the first book, but I believe portions of the second book were a result of outside pressure.
I loveeee that you addressed this, it’s been such a problem it’s crazy what passes and games are suffering because of it, us gamers just want to have fun with a good story. Sometimes when you try to bring it up as a woman and even a man like my bf has tried in past you are downplayed and labeled negatively sometimes these developers have gone as far as to ban people that are respectful but disagree and bring up these concerns.
It definitely feels like they are forcing us to conform to things sometimes, instead of create new cool diverse characters with interesting backgrounds, they want to force ideologies or identities and make that the only different thing and act as if it’s interesting, I just want to have fun, and to each their own, just don’t force it on me.
I could go on about this for hours honestly, a lot of good stories have come out recently luckily, usually indie studios, but it’s definitely diamond in the rough situation lately with so many games lacking but trying so hard to publicly be inclusive and make that their whole thing. What’s more of a let down is when they only include certain groups of people in their studio to be diverse that don’t know the franchise well or don’t listen to lifelong supporters or concerns and penalize them then end up losing fanbase. Then us gamers are stuck watching their favorite games or even cool concept games go down the drain. It definitely feels they don’t listen or care for fans and even hate previous installments.

Yeah, I have been shamed out of multiple forums for just disagreeing with all the political BS (was done respectfully too), they just up and banned me lol. Very few AAA studios left that haven't gone the "woke" route with FROMSOFTWARE, and the team behind FFXIV (Yoshi-P is directing Final Fantasy 16 aswell so hope is still there for now) being the few that are left. But yeah there are a lot of great Indies and also a ton of retro games aswell!
I have always played games as a means to get away from real world drama. I can enter another world full of its own lore. But now THE MESSAGE is heavily corrupting video games and making them so hard to enjoy. Just like with movies.

I used to work for a big developer of a very famous AAA game and I can tell you that the Studio heads were totally afraid of their employees. 3 major things happened I think to cause this. The introduction of aggressive DEI and zero tolerance harrassment polices, a shift to give employees more of a voice, and the addition of Diversity officers and departments. This led to the leaders relenting to any ridiculous idea or criticism of game content that ultimately harmed the product. The diversity team, and I'm not making this up, had as part of their initiatives a system whereby they could look at any content going in the game - from character models to sound effects - to make sure they couldn't offend anyone. I remember on one occasion an employee of color in a very low status position finding fault with one line of dialog that presented a black character in a dubious light and boom the next day the line was cut and we had to rerecord the line costing hundreds of thousands of dollars - actor, new facial capture, editing, etc. But the line was actually really cool and gave the character more depth. But no it had to go because it made the black guy look bad. There was also pressure at the Publisher level to become more woke and hiring writers to reflect this. It was a ww2 game and yet there was constantly directives from on high asking us to find ways to have women and people of color in the story. To force that in rather than just telling interesting stories. The average dev in the trenches was most likely not down with this but afraid to put their heads above the parapet for fear of being terminated. I could write pages about this.
This is actually terrifying. What is even happening to the world? Can this continue like this? Is it a good business model to have or how do you think it will effect the industry in the next 10-20-30 years?
Diversity Officers sound like dictators and thought police to me. This kind of stuff makes me think the only solution is developers are gonna have to go independent for the next decade or so in order to make the titles they want and get away from such insanity. It'll be a struggle but sometimes it's better to just start over if it means you don't have to be involved with a cult.

I'm a game developer since many years, working for one of the major companies in the world, the situation is getting serious, I'm in a minority at this point, HR is toxically woke, and overall the games industry has always been woke because funded with the money of woke people, but now is exploding, and the level of incompetence is raising drastically. The problem with your assumption anyway, is that they are doing this against the profit, which is not true, there is a lot of money on the woke plate, you need to boycott.
Honestly its weird cause having the country flags available was such a big thing in the OG MW2. It made me realise that the world was a lot more connected than I thought because I was finding players with flags from all around the world in my lobbies. I dont mind the pride flags honestly, but it doesnt sit well with me that they removed the country flags.
Also funnily enough with the Spiderman mod, all it did was change it to the UAE version of the game so it was still using official code and assets that are just from that version of the game haha

You can google some of the lobbies where people where absolutely dunking on one another for a variety of reasons or things with all the slurs you could think of back then. Those that were doing so were still grown adults or teenagers that grew into adults and carried on those traditions, guaranteed alot of older streamers now were from those days and probably participated in those things whether they want to admit it or not. COD has always been known to be toxic, and honestly when compared to how it was back in 2008-2009, current MW2 is a childrens game. People had no filter, and I dont think we should have those filters because now the pendulum is swinging the otherway where we are talking about censorship.... The people of the alphabets or the leftist cult would be foaming at the mouth if MW2 of 2009 released today in its unadulterated format.
One good thing is that these woke games and the studios that support and make them are driving me to check out of gaming as a whole. I'm 35 so it's pushing me towards bettering myself physically and mentally. I still game but it's only a handful of games and they tend to be older games as well.

The Call of duty one is what really gets me. How do you make a military game with 0 American flags but 22 pride flags? And when you do have an American flag it's a destroyed one. These developers aren't hiding their agenda at all.

I bought Day's Gone on a sale recently and this game is totally underated, it has a fun gameplay, interesting plot, captivating characters, amazing graphics, when i finished the game i was like "man, why i never heard much about this game?"

One thing that comes to mind is when a new game that comes out, people get excited because of the representation they bring. What’s always drawn me to a game is story, gameplay, soundtrack and more importantly, character development and depth.

I am a 57 yr old female gamer who got into gaming to have something in common/talk about with my autistic son. Even though Gaming was a way for my son and I to spend time together, I frequently found it a therapeutic way to release stress and prevent overload (for myself and son). I don't want or need wokism to cause problems/anxiety/confusion or any other sort of BS in my life. Because of this (and a few other issues) I thoroughly vet every game before we think about buying it. I loose the fun of a blind play through, but I rather loose that then deal with other repercussions of wokeness.
I just finished a game called Judgment (it's on PSN) I suggest giving it a try. (It's a typical Yakuza game, but polished and leans more towards a melodrama than wacky comedy; where as the Yakuza series (and Yakuza: Like a Dragon) are more spit between wacky comedy and melodrama story telling.)
Judgement and Yakuza series are a beat um up action game. Where as Like a Dragon is more a kin to a turned based JRPG, game (similar to Final Fantasy). Like a Dragon was also free last year thru PSN+.
I’m curious to what people think is “woke” is having a non-white protagonist woke? Is having the presence of a rainbow flag woke? Like in these games are they making you attend a pride parade? I’m confused. To me these items are just in the background. If the core gameplay is the same, what’s the issue? Do people have a problem with rainbow road in Mario cart? @@Tejmurthy445 for the spiderman example: for most people the problem isn't the existence of the flags in the game. The problem is that a mod changing them gets disabled and the creator banned.
For cod, the problem isn't that these flags exist, the problem is that the developers went out of their way to include them, while including next to nothing else, showing a complete lack of desire to deliver to the fans.
Often times the defenders of these practices hide behind the "it's for a good cause" excuse. But is it really? What do those flags change? Does anyone actually believe that seeing those will change someone's mind? The people who dislike it, will hate it even more when it's shoved in their faces in their "free time". The people who are indifferent most likely won't know or care about the meaning of those flags, so what is the point?
I'll answer myself: turns out the "good cause" isn't actually the reason for people defending these changes. Instead it's just about talking down on those who don't support these changes and making people feel better about themselves for being on the "right side".

If my son has played a game like "Call of Duty" which has ties to the American military and then plays the next iteration of the game which has eliminated the American flag or shown it in a disrespectful light, I guarantee I will be asked "Why the change?" or "Why the disrespect?". When anything makes him question his value as a human being because he isn't the right skin color, has been brought up to respect God and country, believes there is value in this way of life, Mama Bear will get very angry and defend him at all cost. My son has a mind like a steel trap and remembers things in minute detail. I have no way to avoid these types of questions so I take precautions to prevent their effects before they happen as much as possible. As I said before, I am only speaking for myself. Wokism has a lot of hidden repercussions that many don't think about.

My aunt was a school teacher in Ohio through the 70's to the early 2000's it's weird to someone outside of the US like me to see this cult like behaviour. Other countries especially in Europe wave their flags to special occasions or football matches, but it's nowhere near as "culty" as the US .

@@theblackbaron4119 I happen to be German and view the recitation of the pledge of allegiance in school as a very good practice in the spirit of unity. The kids see differently looking people around them, but they all recite together and they are all the same in front of the law, as Americans.
That's something that is missing in Europe.
We have huge subcultures here, who don't feel as Germans, even though they were born here. They call themselves foreigners and distinguish very clearly between Germans and their own, often based on skin color and appearance. In extreme cases they disdain the law and follow Sharia in case of muslims or other codes of behavior that often conflict with german laws.
I for one think, if you immigrate to a different country, you should assimilate and a ritual like the pledge before class is a good tool for that.
Children of migrants to the US identify as Americans at much higher rates then migrants to other countries.

Me and my little nephew (I’m 31 and my nephew is 10) played and bonded over Days Gone like no other activity!
