That looked like a really great pattern to me! I've got a good bit of #4 buckshot of a few different brands, never patterned any of it at distance, but it's what I keep in my home defense shotguns.
I recall the technical staff at the American Rifleman did some exhaustive testing of both buckshot and slugs many years ago. If I recall correctly the best overall performance was with a Modified choke. Tighter chokes tended to cause holes in the center of the pattern with many loads. Of course this was prior to the introduction of the modern reduced recoil Flitecontrol loads but it was enlightening. Thanks for sharing another test!👍🙏
That may have been true years ago, but that is definitely not the case with most loads and chokes today. Even the Flite Control loads do great through a full choke. If I only had one choke to run buckshot through, it would probably be a standard full choke. It has always been a solid choice for pretty much every shell I've run through one
Well done. Huge thanks! Sure appreciate the great demonstration and application. I may look at these for my 835 with the factory Xtra full for coyote. Would you all chose This over the Hornady BB Coyote loads.?
It depends on the situation. If I knew the shots were gonna be about 40 and in, I'd probably take the BB loads. If there was the potential for longer shots, I'd probably take a 4 buck load that I knew patterned well
@matttyreeoutdoors Appreciate that. I just decided to run 00Buck in all of our shotguns in the last set. We didn't call any in. We have a unique situation just outside city limits where we can use rimfire or shotgun for predators. So our big guns stay home. We are just getting into this predator hunting. We have to thin the packs out. I have the BB and 00 Buck but the #4 is a good option I think. Your content has been extremely informative and very helpful. Many thanks. My son has an older IC 12 gauge the pattern at 35 yards with 00 is pretty open and BB isn't much better. I am thinking these might help.
#4 buck pops through ribs well on 40yds and under on broadside shots, less effective on quartering shots, inside 25yds you'll eat em up! From my experience.patterning only tells what's possible if you center the pattern on the vitals, field shooting considerably different than a target off a bench, same with a rifle. Rick of Orange p.s. what county are you,I would enjoy talking Va. Deer hunting and guns with you good hunting
Doesn't mean much to me without a side by side comparison choked vs unchoked at 40 yards to show if there is an advantage. You should take two shots and compare them side by side with your game cutouts.
We didn't compare anything side by side in this test, but we have a number of other tests with these shells through different chokes where you can see the difference
Yes sir. Pretty darn good thank you sir
Yep, definitely looked pretty good

Yep, definitely not too bad at all!
Nice, happy with that. 4 buck is good stuff as long as you know your effective range and stick you it.
Yep, 4 buck is pretty versatile form varmints to deer if you know your pattern and ranges
#4 Buck works. A lot of people will say it doesn’t, but I suspect they’ve never used it. Know your pattern and keep shots in range.
Yep, it will definitely work as long as you know your setup like you said

Good test. Test a few chokes same ammo.😊
We actually do have a number of other videos with these shells through a variety of different chokes

The load for next September deer? What do you think? I enjoy your videos . Rick of Orange
Maybe, we'll see. It would definitely do the job though

Coyotes beware.
That is really a nice, very usable combo.
Yep, looks pretty good!
Have you tested the Federal Premium 3” 4B load? It is a 41 pellet load. Thanks
We have not tested them yet, but I do have some of them, so the tests are on the way
