I know your the real deal because I saw a Lee perfect powder thrower on your bench. That is a set it and forget it powder measure. I used to check every 10th charge but with that one it's a waste of time, it doesn't change and likes all of the powders I use. Thanks for the informative post!

Im the kinda guy I dont like goin into things just willy nilly, i need to know exactly what im doing n understand why. You do good tutorial form content, thank you brother 💪🇺🇲🥜
Great video! You cover the three legs of the stool, hulls, wads and powder, more completely than any presentation I've seen on UA-cam. I will definitely share this with anyone I find who wants to start reloading. It answers so many questions that make people reluctant to try this awesome hobby.
This weekend I blew through 20 lbs making 7/8 Lee slugs. Then made one mold of 00 bucks to have some to twist them apart. Out of the three methods I know of. Twisting is the cleanest, But most time-consuming. Definitely, an excellent way to get them apart.
I had a few once fired Fiocchi clear hulls with deformed crimp sections that were not really suitable to fold crimp again, so I trimmed them down to 2.5". I loaded them similar to what you did with the first round you loaded: Cheddite primer, 18grs of Promo(Red Dot), green SSW with petals removed, .125" 12GA nitro card, 9 pellets of Hornady .330" 00-buck stacked by three, and a BPI .045" 12GA overshot card. It lined up just right for a roll crimp. 18grs is probably a little light, but it is what I normally use in my 1-1/8oz. clay loads, but I think it will do for some low-recoil "tactical" style buck loads.
If you are an absolute beginner like me, I highly recommend using a break action(side by side, ober under, single shot). That way, you can always check your bore for any obstruction and just use a long stick to clear it
This is exactly the info I've been looking for as a reloading newbie. One question is, why did you say not to use magnum primers? I'm not sure what the reasons are? Great video Thanks! 👍👍
It depends on what payload weight you want and how fast you want it to be. Slow burning powder is for heady magnum loads or high velocity standard loads.
@@theshotgunscientists Because the barrel could be damaged otherwise, with the heavy loads in combination with fast burning, right? But then one needs a longer barrel, in order to make sure that the slow burning powder is actually burned and not wasted. Correct?
@@Detvanliga Not really, fast powder is meant for lighter or standard loads up to 1 1/8 ounces. You’d still see reduced speed with a shorter barrel. If the data is listed at 1200 fps you might only see 1125 fps with an 18” barrel.
Herco also is gd for heavy loads/magnum, also the IMR BLUE, longshot works gd in my 1 1/4 oz loads in 16 gauge and 1 1/8., ive also used Bullseye in 12 g loads. 1oz field loads, small dose of it goes a ways, performed great

I wouldn’t think tss needs open chokes for high velocity man but it also doesn’t need to be loaded super fast. 1200 fps should be plenty inside 40 yards.

Random question. If a person were to take a 1-1/4 ounce max dram load and reload it with 1 ounce of shot would I maybe see a decent boost in velocity over a 1 ounce skeet load? I ask this because I'm making wax slugs and for whatever reason the 1.25 ounce loads are tumbling immediately in flight giving something like a 2 foot group at 25 yards while the skeet loads are making a single ragged hole. I already tried it and found it to be accurate but with identical recoil leading me to believe it's not really any faster. I'm tempted to work up my own loads with some blue dot but most of my interest here lies in off the shelf SHTF aspect of it. You know, just for S&G.
Mike: Question rather than comment. I've been loading for over 60 years but haven't done shotshells for decades and a lot of things have changed. I'll be loading for a KS12TS for defense. The components I have, and would like to use without acquiring others, are Alliant Blue Dot, Remington 2 3/4" unibody hulls (they're labeled SureFire), Winchester AA wads. An odd combo, I know, but this is what I have. I'll use #1 buck. What would be a reasonable charge of Blue Dot for a stout but not hazardous defense load? Also are the AA wads usable with this combo? If you decline an answer, I'll understand completely but I thought it worth a shot. Thanks a bunch!!
Those hulls are tapered and any load data for tapered hulls may be used, but not sure of the exact wad you have. Winchester made a bunch of AA wads for varying payload weights. Actually not an odd combo at all. I’d go to alliants website for blue dot powder and find a load using a Remington gun club or sts hull with the wad you have and load by the payload weight. 10 pellets of #1 buckshot is right at 1 ounce, 12 is in between 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 ounces so 1 1/4 ounce data should be used. 15 pellets is 1 3/8 ounces.
Thank you for the video and your time! You make it easy to understand and follow. I'm curious if it's worth it to reload ourselves compared to buying from the manufacturers? How much was the total cost for that one shell? If I made my own ammo, approximately how much per shell for 12ga 2¾ 00 @ 1400fps and slug @ 1600fps? Thanks again!
It all just depends on how many pellets you want but for buckshot and birdshot the faster you push the velocity the more it spreads. Loading your own buckshot and slugs is a lot cheaper than buying factory ammo especially if you cast your own lead.
Magic bud video bug AGAIN - You realy do help us beginners get started. - - I am wondering how much/many grains of Longshot you would use in a 3 inch shell with 15 pellets/bölls ?
Im new to this the smokeless powder cannot be tightly compressed like black powder so i cannot compress it in the shell right it must have some free space, can the plastic wad compress the proper powder load or are there shoulders that stop it inside at proper depth
So I’ve asked a few questions on your other videos. New to shotshell reloading. I was going to buy bpi tps wads, but I’m reloading sts hulls and you said they won’t work in tapered hulls. I want the tightest pattern I can get, so what’s the next best option for a wad? Thanks for answering my other questions.
Claybuster cb1138 with mylar wrap and buffer. 10 pellets. If you’re getting components anyway I’d get cheddite hulls tps wad and some .31 #0. Buffer of course.
Appreciate the video. Do you think now is a decent time for someone inexperienced to try to get into reloading? I heard some materials were getting bought up by panic buyers so I'm a bit wary of diving into it.
That situation was over about a year ago, nearly everything is back in stock. Hardest thing to find is blue dot and steel powders but those are the only two that aren’t always available currently. The problem right now is everything being about 20% more expensive than it was before 2020. It’ll go down though. Prices aren’t terrible so I’d say yeah get into if you can, still saving a ton of money loading buckshot, slugs, and any gauge besides 12 and 20.
@@theshotgunscientists I will try that next time I am making them. Thanks for the idea. But dog clippers do an excellent job because it centers it self to the balls.
Hull not hole, but Winchester tapered hulls will have a tall basewad inside the hull that’s clearly visible, tapered hulls are usually smooth like no texture on the plastic. Remington gun club and game load hulls are the exception.
Question. Can I take a factory target shell in 12 or 20 gauge that uses 7/8 oz of #8 shot and remove the #8 shot and replace it with 7/8 oz of whatever buckshot I have and be safe?
The overall length of the wad is 1.854. The internal depth of the cup is .791". The label on the bag says Winchester WAA12. Also; would I need to trim the petals?
The waa12 wad is for 1 1/8 ounce loads, no need to trim the wad that’s only necessary for 00 buck stacked by 3’s. You should be able to load 12 pellets of #1 buck in those wads you have. Blue dot is a magnum powder, so for lighter loads like those the velocity is going to really high. 1400 fps or more. Not exactly ideal for home defense but it’ll works if it’s all you got.
I'm far enough out in the country that it shouldn't be an issue. Wads are cheap enough that I should be able to get some that would work for 1 1/4 oz. What would you recommend for those Remington cases? @@theshotgunscientists
@@miltonhall7078 claybuster cb1138-12 wads. They should be perfect for what you wanna do. They are the short red wads meant for heavy loads with bulky powder like blue dot.
I like your videos very informative I do have a question I’m using brand new 2 3/4 Fiocchi primed hulls, longshot powder, BRP-12 brush wads, and #00 super buck I would like to stack 9 pellets by 3s how many grains of powder do I use I was thinking 27grn. But not sure since I can’t find load data for this setup
Great videos , but is their a reason why you use The Loadall two and not Mec loaders ? They are usually considered industry standards and very durable !
The end result is exactly the same, I can load 8 different gauges with just 1 press, it needs no adjustments, is 1/4 the cost, and I prefer their simplicity. I have used mecs before there’s nothing wrong with them I just prefer the Lee presses.
Owsome lecture brother I will like to start reloading shotgun now I like oobuck and slugs it's all I'm interested thank you for the info. Will be talking to you soon
ok bro ive done a few and after you pre crimp it then you do the final crimp down do you squash it all the way down to where the top part comes down and contacts the bottom little metal piece that holds the hull,i wanna make sure im not over tightening it because it leaves a place on the side of mine where you can feel it with your finger,it goes in a bit on the side where the wad has the hole going thru it.kinda dips in a bit.did i over crimp it ?
You’re starting to buckle the hull, just put enough crimp on it to where it won’t open back up. Get a gaep bn2 crimp finisher and it’ll make factory looking crimps. Just need a hand drill.
Do you include the wad, overshot card and any felt or cork as part of the payload weight? If I have a 2-3/4 hull, mg42 hull, 10 stacked by 2 Remington 00 shot and 1 overshot card with 6 point crimp. The total for 10 00 shot, was and os card came to 1.336 oz. Im planning on using 1 3/8 shot data
I have a question on the Longshot powder could u use that to just make a rifle slug factory wise just like the winchester super X rifle 1oz slug at 1600fps. I was thinking of getting into reloading after about 6months to 1year after I shoot off my new to the game of 12g shotgun and start reusing my shells. Thanks
@@theshotgunscientists nice. I like the sound of 2k fps.. but 1600 factory stock already dose a good kicking lol. Specially those bucks/deer.. ya because I'm a rifle 308 type of a guy or pistol and never knew about reloading with all my years but when I went to a old timers house and he had a crap load of rifle and pistol empty shells he told me about it and plus his no-good casings he brings to the metal recycling to get money back and I never knew why and then found out the 411 and since shotguns are easy and I just purchased a shotgun I was like sounds like a good investment Specially if I'll shoot say 200rounds a month then after that 6months to a year you know. Buy a lee load with a thing of powder a 500 bag of wads and circle wads and primers with say a small bag of 00,bird,slugs to start off and save money in the long run because a box of 25rd slugs are running about 25$ a box when right there is a supply of say wads so in reality 6months of if I but 100$ or even 50$ of shells a month i would of already invested 300$ to 600$ when that amount can get you how much rounds if you just order the components with 300$/600$ worth of goodies
That’s a bit ridiculous to be honest that they would say that when they have plenty of load data using longshot for buckshot. You probably spoke to someone who has no idea what they were talking about or just didn’t feel like helping you. Longshot is the best powder for buckshot, they literally have data on their site for it.

Lead is lead man just match any data for that powder with the same weight buckshot like instead of an ounce of birdshot just use an ounce of buckshot
@theshotgunscientists
Thanks brother
I'm new at this
I Saw the video on WAA super handicap for
12ga 00 buckshot
Thanks for providing information
Great stuff 👍
Thanks man
Im new to this the smokeless powder cannot be tightly compressed like black powder so i cannot compress it in the shell right it must have some free space, can the plastic wad compress the proper powder load or are there shoulders that stop it inside at proper depth
@@mikri9953 The wad seals the powder. It does compress but not like black powder.
Great video
Thanks
Any info for tactical loads for close quarters with LS, Clays Int. Or herco? Something that will function in a semiauto.
We’ve done numerous yes
So I’ve asked a few questions on your other videos. New to shotshell reloading. I was going to buy bpi tps wads, but I’m reloading sts hulls and you said they won’t work in tapered hulls. I want the tightest pattern I can get, so what’s the next best option for a wad? Thanks for answering my other questions.
Claybuster cb1138 with mylar wrap and buffer. 10 pellets. If you’re getting components anyway I’d get cheddite hulls tps wad and some .31 #0. Buffer of course.
@@theshotgunscientistsawesome great info thanks. What exactly is advantage of the Mylar wrap since there’s no worry of steel on steel?
I use the lee 00 buck mold. What I learned is cutting them apart. Dog nail clippers far exceed a modified flush cutter.
I just twist them apart with two pairs of pliers. They come out as round as can be that way.
@@theshotgunscientists I will try that next time I am making them. Thanks for the idea. But dog clippers do an excellent job because it centers it self to the balls.
So how can you tell the tapered hole in the straight hole from the outside
Hull not hole, but Winchester tapered hulls will have a tall basewad inside the hull that’s clearly visible, tapered hulls are usually smooth like no texture on the plastic. Remington gun club and game load hulls are the exception.
I'm totally new to this but very interested, can you tell me on average what's the difference in price per round in hand loading and buying. Thanks
It depends on what you’re doing
So the Lee will resize the base ring on the steel gun club hulls?
95% of Shotshells made today have steel bases. They are just brass plated steel. There is no press made that can’t resize steel bases.
Question. Can I take a factory target shell in 12 or 20 gauge that uses 7/8 oz of #8 shot and remove the #8 shot and replace it with 7/8 oz of whatever buckshot I have and be safe?
Yep lead weight is lead weight no matter how it’s shaped
@@theshotgunscientists That is what I thought. Thanks.
Thanks for the info . What do you load for pheasents in 12 gauge
We’ve done a long range pheasant load recently
@@theshotgunscientists thats what im looking for
The overall length of the wad is 1.854.
You've been extremely helpful. Thanks so very much !!!@@theshotgunscientists
9 pellets is 1 1/8 ounces if you’re using .33 cal. I’d start at 30 grains.
@@theshotgunscientists thank you
Great videos , but is their a reason why you use The Loadall two and not Mec loaders ?
They are usually considered industry standards and very durable !
The end result is exactly the same, I can load 8 different gauges with just 1 press, it needs no adjustments, is 1/4 the cost, and I prefer their simplicity. I have used mecs before there’s nothing wrong with them I just prefer the Lee presses.
Great video. Where were you sourcing your components? Thans in advance.
Ballistic products
@20:00 Don't tell the Borg.
What’s the borg? sorry.
I don't know if I missed it. But can you use straightwall wads in a tapered hull
No
Great info...
Have you ever considered publishing a reloading manual?
Maybe one day
I'd buy it. This hairy sob has his shit together
@theshotgunscientists how about today brother
Owsome lecture brother I will like to start reloading shotgun now I like oobuck and slugs it's all I'm interested thank you for the info. Will be talking to you soon
What about crowd funding test for shot shells? I thought about setting one to to test more powders
Excellent video with great content.
ok bro ive done a few and after you pre crimp it then you do the final crimp down do you squash it all the way down to where the top part comes down and contacts the bottom little metal piece that holds the hull,i wanna make sure im not over tightening it because it leaves a place on the side of mine where you can feel it with your finger,it goes in a bit on the side where the wad has the hole going thru it.kinda dips in a bit.did i over crimp it ?
You’re starting to buckle the hull, just put enough crimp on it to where it won’t open back up. Get a gaep bn2 crimp finisher and it’ll make factory looking crimps. Just need a hand drill.
CAN YOU DO A SHOW ON RELOADING BRASS 410 AND 12 GAUGE SHELLS?
I don’t have any I just have them in 32 gauge and 16 gauge
Do you include the wad, overshot card and any felt or cork as part of the payload weight? If I have a 2-3/4 hull, mg42 hull, 10 stacked by 2 Remington 00 shot and 1 overshot card with 6 point crimp. The total for 10 00 shot, was and os card came to 1.336 oz. Im planning on using 1 3/8 shot data
You don’t include the wad or filler no.
@@theshotgunscientiststhank you!
how many reloads can you get out of the fiocchi hulls?
4 or 5
Do you have a good 00 load for 3inch federal premium hulls I have some long shot powder thanks
Follow any lead shot recipe and use buckshot instead, lead weight is lead weight
Most excellent.
Thanks
Was that federal hull a 2 3/4 inch or 3 inch??
2.75”
I have a question on the Longshot powder could u use that to just make a rifle slug factory wise just like the winchester super X rifle 1oz slug at 1600fps. I was thinking of getting into reloading after about 6months to 1year after I shoot off my new to the game of 12g shotgun and start reusing my shells. Thanks
Yes you can easily. You can do a 7/8oz slug at 2000 fps too.
So 34 grain of longshot in new fiocchi hulls will work just fine?
Yes, hodgdon has free data on their website if you want to check it out.
@@theshotgunscientists i couldnt find any. Plus i even called hodgdon and they told me not to use longshot for buckshot lol
That’s a bit ridiculous to be honest that they would say that when they have plenty of load data using longshot for buckshot. You probably spoke to someone who has no idea what they were talking about or just didn’t feel like helping you. Longshot is the best powder for buckshot, they literally have data on their site for it.
