At 01:44 when the Police Captain explains that "the remains they are finding is through a fire that melted metal," hearing the seemingly chaotic situation of warning sirens and the estimates that the fire was moving "a mile a minute", this doesn't sound like a typical wildfire.

its not true that the fire moved a mile a minute and you can see that for yourself on numerous videos. Dirt bikers drove through town filming, people stood out in the middle of the street and filmed. It took much, much longer for the fire to move. People just disregarded the signs. there were fires there in 2018 and 2021. This was not new nor unique.

I hope this is a wake-up call for many communities. Get involved with your community's disaster management planning process. Tsunami, earthquake, fire, extreme weather events, etc. Know what the plan is. Know what your response should be. Know your options. Know what neighbors will need your help. Paradise, California had almost no warning. The town is still recovering. I know what it's like to feel the embers falling on you, to drive through fire, to not know if you will have a place to come back to. We were lucky to have helicopters on their way. They saved our community in 2007. Hearing a helicopter still sends me into a momentary panic. Sending prayers for your community.

Routes to take during flood events. Amber alerts, Silver alerts. Power outages and followed up by the status of the repair. In Hawaii, a lot of people would ignore such warnings. We have so many microclimates on each island that there would be a never-ending flow of weather updates. Wind gusts and lulls and changes direction constantly. It is usually very humid, but it was very arid that day because it was on the edge of a hurricane. This is hurricane season. Evey year storms start in the eastern Pacific and travel west. There’s a “cone of uncertainty,” a possible path. Every time the islands are in that path, the forecasters warn of potential landfall. There’s often a huge run on water, toilet paper and canned goods at Costco. So plenty of people take it seriously. But if you look at various commenters on news websites, you’ll see tons of people saying it’s all bs and that there’s nothing to worry about. In a way, they’re right. The chances of a hurricane hitting your particular neighborhood is very small. The chances of it veering off due to a change in water or atmospheric conditions, or hitting a volcano and getting sheared off, are much, much greater. Even in this fire, you had people stay at home thinking they could fight it off with a garden hose. Miscalculations all the way around. I’m not poohpoohing your idea, but I’m saying it would be extraordinarily complicated and expensive to implement, with not a lot of reward for the investment. Ultimately it would require human beings to make the right decisions, and they often don’t. And I this case, I don’t know what a good decision would have been. Some people fled south. Others fled north. Still others fled into the ocean. I’m sure it was the right decision for some, the wrong decision for many others.

Terrain and flora types all add to the potential strength of a fire. Bushfires also create their own weather system, just adding to the already strong winds. If there is no history of bushfires there is probably not a wide fire awareness. It would be like here in Australia suddenly trying to deal with a volcano or large tsunami. I hope there are improved fire management and evacuation policies put in place from the formal enquiry into the fire. In Australia we know that a fire affected area has to be 'processed' before residents are allow back in. Authorities have to search, retrieve and catalogue any human remains before public access. There is always frustration but it has to be done. I am always shocked when I see images of an area razed by fire and only vague outlines left. It's so sad.

There will be 10s of thousands of lives lost if you ask me.i wasn't there, but this appears to have moved so impossibly fast, i will be surprised if there are more survivors than victims.
This is..... horrible! Its the only way to describe it! And i have a strong feeling that the official cause of the fire will not match what we have all aready seen.
I believe this was an attack by Directed Energy Weapons either from space, or a BALLOON Or a high altitude plane.
This wasnt the only massive fire this week either. Its happening in other countries.

Agreed it was a fire,I live near talent oregon,or what used to be talent, fire destroyed the town in no time flat, my birth town burned this year there was no lasers. Fire Is potent, powerful, and we often deify it for being the ultimate destruction, we ascribe this to help the mind and soul accept this Force that can level towns in a heartbeat. Pele.

the power lines blocking the road need investigated and people told the results. #1 if they were high tension power feeds, they should never be in position to block the only escape route. #2 Hawaii power said they placed the grid in 'no reconnect' so that if a line does go down and/or break the system will not try to reonnect. It has to manuall be done.
So the power lines across the southern route? Were they EVEN ON ? Did the police block the road for no reason?
They pushed cars north back into the fire path.....why?
(our towns fire truck has driven over down power lines before to get to a fire, if my choice was burn up or drive over I would have taken my chances)

Why was it so deadly you ask?
The fire came down slope in 60 mph winds and burned Lahaina and many many people who had no idea it was coming.
It burned down Lahaina in 17 minutes.
We’ve never had an event like this.
    Our sirens are for tsunamis
We will figure this out and Hawaii will have the best alert system for the new reality of fires that have never happened like this before.

We as a society are not trained properly for things like this. People are not trained to heed first warning. Remember Katrina? Unfortunately all wait for last minute, move now. Electric fails in disaster. Highways get blocked. Those that listen and take action, get out. What if they were told that morning to leave just encase? Would they have done it? There were some that did at first sign of danger. These people aren’t on your show! I do feel deeply sorry for this tragedy. We all need to learn from it and listen to the 1st warning and not wait for authorities to have to make us move. Now all we can do is get out of the way and let the authorities do their job and pick up the pieces. Again my deepest respect and condolences to all involved in this tragedy.

NO, THIS FIRE WAS SO DEADLY BECAUSE PEOPLE BUILD RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A NATURAL BURN AREA!!! JUST LIKE PARADISE CA. PEOPLE ARE HARD HEADED. People are bound and determined to keep building in these natural burn areas, This disaster has been predicted for years on the southwestern side of Maui they've had several bad fires just like in Paradise one of the worst possible places you can build a home because both are natural burn areas the climate is Mediterranean like, low annual rainfall, scrub brush, low humanity, high downsloping winds that heat up and fry out as they come off the mountain. I was in Maui about 10 years ago and it was so dry the wind dried my ribs and skin out so bad, mally has basically five different climates just on one Island. If you go to the northeastern side of the island is like rainforest, you got a mountain range in the middle that actually has snowball certain times of the year and then the South Western side of the island which is basically like a desert where this fire happened. It actually infuriates me that when people act like they're surprised that this happened, it's no surprise it was expected it was just a matter of when, just like in Paradise CA.
