- Jenn’s riveting talk shows us how authoritarianism threatens the space for possibility and course correction that democratic institutions create. An award-winning journalist and podcast host, Jenn White has worked in public radio since 1999. White hosts "1A," a nationally syndicated daily news program from WAMU and NPR. "1A" is NPR's fastest-growing weekday show. It's carried on more than 460 stations around the country and reaches at least 4.5 million listeners weekly.
Jenn previously hosted WBEZ's local two-hour midday show, "Reset." She is also a familiar voice on several WBEZ podcasts, including "Making Oprah," "Making Obama," and "16 Shots" which chronicled the fatal police shooting of Laquan McDonald and the trial of Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Democracy is 2 wolves and 1 sheep discussing dinner plans......
C’est toi le mouton 😂😂
Democracy works, it's fragile and needs to be taken care of permanently. Authoritarianism only works for the few people on the top.
the problem is that we can’t agree on a common future. Each side wants to force each other and that is a recipe for disaster.
Nonsense. One side wants to force people, while the other side wants government to stay out of people's lives to the maximum extent possible.
We should work to protect democracy because without democracy we can't prosper in country. We should take action against dictatorship. If we united in our fundamental rights and aware about this we can prevent dictator who work against Democratic citizen.
Except the USA is NOT a democracy. We're a republic. Read the Constitution and understand why the Founding Fathers designed our nation to operate in this fashion rather than a democracy.
If you just have two parties, it's called democracy ? Make more parties
Native American reservations are examples of democracies.
democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.
- benjamin franklin
There never was a Democracy Yet, that did not commit suicide. It is in vain to Say that Democracy is less vain, less proud, less selfish, less ambitious or less avaricious than Aristocracy or Monarchy. It is not true in Fact and no where appears in history.
- john adams
We are a Republic, not a Democracy.
Yes, which is another type of democracy.
Thank you for such a beautiful speech. Your voice is the voice of peace.
Reading some comments here, I learned in some cases democracy and republic mean differently. Being outside the States (,where I have never been), I knew nothing about how many people there doubt what democracy can.
The country that forced democracy confidently (some would say "arrogantly") to our country, now faces people's disapproval of it. Surely there are (and always will be) some points to be modified, democracy is one of the fundamental premises for people to make their society better in a way they want to be.
Some say no to the title of this video, and I don't force them to change their mind, but if they completely quit any kind of initiative to seek better society through discussing, communicating with others (especially those with different opinions and points of view), they will be just laughed at from outside their country. Stay arrogant. You have forced many countries and societies to be democratic so far, and there's no way left for you to go back. You cannot be the one who spoils democracy now.
Sincerely, from outside the US.
Did any ruling system work perfectly? So far, none.
Will today's systems work in the future? Absolutely not.
Will any future revised systems work? I doubt that.
If it can be bought, no.
Today, 200 former Republican staffers can nod their heads in agreement with what's spoken here.
Democracy is great in many ways, but it breeds near-constant conflict. The very notion of voting basically yay or nay on a subject seems highly inefficient, especially if the vote is to take away rights from other people (I think we can all think of many examples, I won't state them because people get triggered very easily nowadays). It really seems like corruptions is allowed to fester easier when people are engulfed in conflict, so that's one major con.
We are a Republic
Democracy is MOB RULE
I thought we were a Democratic Republic
Pure democracy never works.
@@barbaramcallister2244 Please, I am now under the impression that people hear democracy and think democratic party and so republicans like saying it's a republic because they are republicans. We are a democratic republic
@@rikachiuit’s not. A democracy and a republic are two very different things while a republic incorporates elements of democracy. It also incorporates elements of monarchy and aristocracy. A democratic republic is more like a term used in names of countries that are anything but republics like North Korea. And nothing like democracy such as Laos, Algeria, or historically east Germany.
@@rikachiudemocracy does lead to mob rule, that’s why republicanism was created, it’s a mixed system that checks power.
This is an important TED Talk!
Jenn White speaks the truth about just how fragile democracy is. Even in the comments below you can see the cynicism, if not downright willingness to abandon it for autocratic forms that provide more order, but less freedom. The more we concede control to minority rule, what some conveniently pass off as "we are really a republic," the more we lapse, a molecule at a time, into control of the many by the few. We should resist this with all our might.
Gran Historia de vida❤ Saludos
From इंडिया. Came here Just to know if we are going to be (fractured) democracy or it is going to be dictatorship only.
It can work preferably on a smaller scale
Great and inspiring --- Thanks 🙏👍👍

You say you are a Journalist.
Right up front, in today's time and age.
I have become Very unimpressed with "MonIker".! Journalist .And suggest that you wear it, or verbally divorce yourself from It.
She's from NPR. That ought to tell you all you need to know.
Great commentary cousin Jenn! We're cousins by way of my grandmother Irene White from Fort Valley, Georgia. We must stay vigilant and vote against a dictatorship government. Thank you for your work.
Great talk ❤
Here is my problem with this presentation. Her presentation appears to suggest if an individuals makes the decision to vote against her ideals, or the party she supports, they don't believe in Democracy.
Democracy. as a concept, is built on the understanding that a population, as a whole, decides the directions to navigate their society. Democracy is not a straight path aligned with the presenter's ideals, which it seems is what she believes. When the population, as is their democratic right, votes against her candidates, laws, policies, etc... this is Democracy at work.
Well if the party or ideals you are supporting are vehemently against Democracy, then yes there’s a problem. The issue is that we are in an representative democracy where not everyone may have an equal say and if a very vocal minority consolidates power and then explicitly uses that power to try to reduce democratic efforts in said government/nation there is once again an issue. She is really not presenting any set of ideals besides that fact that there is danger in allowing these small minorities to ran rampant in the face of what the larger democratic majority might want because of the way our government is set up. 🤷

First, what party in the US is "vehemently against Democracy"? I am unaware of a major political party in the US with this a part of their platform.
Second, when was there ever a time when a vocal minority didn't attempt to consolidate power? To suggest one group is more guilty of this than another is my core issue with this talk.
The presentation is a thinly disguised argument against a political party and set of beliefs the speaker opposes. If you say you believe in Democracy, then you need to also acknowledge you accept the results of Democracy. You can't simply accept the results when they suit you or when your team wins, then claim Democracy is in danger or failed when you lose or a large election is looming. The entire point of my original comment is Democracy (US Version) is an opportunity to allow a population to choose who they want to represent them, and sometimes Democracy does not work in your favor. But, this is Democracy too.
@aerolyssadani2106 I want to point out, the minorities that are currently in control are the lobbyists. The ones who give the corrupted politicians money to do what they please. I know of a politician who went to DC in the hopes to make change. He could not and fell prey to the lure of money and the seduction of current belief of power. Political power. The checks and balances that the founding fathers put in place could not forsee the corruption and evolution of the world. They did their best but to keep our Republic healthy, we do need a revising of what was previously set down as law. Take for instance the 2 terms as president was an unspoken agreement till FDR broke tradition. Why do we force 2 terms on a president but not Congress or House of Representatives? It has helped lead to today's destructive political climate.
Wow , wonderful ❤, all humans should play a role in saving this democracy ❤ and halting such elements who create this threats to democracy as on 6th January 🙏
Except the USA is NOT a democracy. We're a republic. Read the Constitution and understand why the Founding Fathers designed our nation to operate in this fashion rather than a democracy.
Do Republicans not understand this or do they just not care?

This woman is an avowed left wing dem. Do you think she' s going to present a balanced argument?
We need to get back to Jesus Christ. Work toward Christ likeness.
It works better if they people are mostly the same color and share the same values.
Simple answer to the title; no.
Democracy is being challenged by Trump and his followers. Please pay attention and VOTE for Kamala
Why vote when 1 vote doed not matter. What we should demand is the removal of the antiquated system we use called the electoral college. At present 1 vote cannot sway an election, if you remove the EC then 1 vote can matter and the goal of the founding fathers can start to be achieved
How does that kool-aid taste😂😂😂
@@OpinionWolfwhat do you think the purpose of the electoral college is?
@@hEXordo I know what its purpose is, but it is an antiquated system that has been used to create segregation among the parties and thus segregate the US States. I suggest reading Washington's farewell address. That may shed light on what I speak of.
@hEXordo the purpose to make it easier to determine a leader over 200 years ago. The system did not take into consideration advances in technology they never perceived would exist. The EC basically needs to be removed due to our ability to have all votes tallied within 2-3 weeks. Rather than months back during the early years of this nation. At least one candidate that had popular vote was denied president in 2000: Al Gore. Also 20 years ago the media has caused segregation by using the EC that causes people to assume all people living in that state are Republucan or Democrat. Remove the Electoral College and popular will matter. Votes will have more value than they do today and we will stop the political segregation that has been polarizing the country.
