Thanks!!! I'm so glad I found this. Worked like a charm just by simply capping the cpu to 90% instead of 100%. My new MSI gaming laptop got 80 degree C to 95 degree C just by doing simply stuff like turning it on, downloading a game, installing windows update. And the fans go crazy. Now at 90%, running games, it only went to 65 deg C. I only tested 3 minutes in the game, but before I did this, the CPU got to 90 degree with even less intense tasks than this, lol. I just don't understand how MSI could release their devices like this. Out of the box it is like a helicopter no matter how light I use it.
came across this post after noticing that my CPU was running around 85-90 Celsius on Dragon center - Sport mode on my MSI GP62mvr 7RFX Leapard Pro on games like Forza 5. After the adjustments, I'm still getting decent FPS, in the 80-90 fps which still plays very smooth but more importantly my GPU temps are around 70-77 deg now. No need to underclock or run any other software. This works great. Glad I found your post. I'm still using a laptop cooler which I know doesn't do much in lowering temp but does provide some decent airflow. Also I have Cooler boost on in fan mode which makes the fan run harder so will try to run it in basic and see what happens.

@Sam K I mean for me it’s perfectly fine and my temps are good so I don’t really need to undervolt for now at least but when I play warzone it goes to 80-90c but for the most part it’s fine!

Hey dude, this REALLY helped me a lot, I have a MSI GL63 8SD and it heated SO MUCH even doing NOTHING and if I opened a Microsoft Word, It just went to hell, about 95º now it barely surpasses 60ºC when doing light tasks, and when gaming it reaches 80 in extreme settings, nice job!
This actually fixed my laptop in a fucking big way, firstly the temps you have on screen are your graphics card so that isnt even showing the highest temperature, but secondly my cpu was running at 95 STRAIGHT AWAY as soon as i ran anything it would go balls to the wall and with no benefit, i made the changes you suggested and my results were more significant, instead of 95 on my cpu its 60!!! and the graphics card has equally gone down massively, thanks so much man, i knew there was something messed up that should be fixed with a tweek. great video dude you saved my 1.7k latop from being a massive disappointment.

@@w2best Yes, though now it stays around 40 degrees when I am not gaming, and goes up to 60 when I am (depending on the game). But besides that I do not lose performance at all. Probably thanks to the cooling system I have on this machine.
That is because doing this disables the turbo boost. Which means the CPU can't go over 2.6GHZ so the temperature loss is normal. If you are a video editor and want to get the most out of it, you need to reapply thermal paste and/or put the CPU on max cooler boost fans

I'm honestly a little stunned, but this worked for my MSI stealth. I've tried everything, even disabling turbo with throttlestop, and only ever dropped temps by like 10degrees. Sometimes it would still overheat. Changing max processor to 95% dropped temps 20 degrees and I don't even have to turn turbo off. Unreal. It's 2020. My MSI GS65 8RF GTX 1070 with liquid metal & premium thermal pads was reaching 95 Celsius degrees! After your video procedures it's under 70!!! Wow! You deserve a trophy! Many thanks!!!
5 years later and this video worked wonders for my GF63! I used to get cpu temps around 80-90 degrees, sometimes even 100 on games such as beamNG Drive, Fortnite and Overwatch but now they've dropped to 70-80 degrees. I've also noticed that prior to decreasing the cpu performance, my gpu temps were peculiarly low (only around 50 degrees) which have lead me to suspect that the gpu was under utilised. However, now my gpu and cpu get about the same temperatures when under load which means that they are both doing their jobs! P.S: I noticed a few frame issues at 90% performance (I wanted around 144 but got around 120) so I increased the performance to 93% (I know, small change) and boom! I got my desired fps. Cheers for this simple yet effective video, cheers from Glasgow mate!
This is extremely useful. I set mine to 99% and I experience: - No drop in performance for mainstream esport games - A few, but quite noticeable, frames less performance for demanding titles - A whopping *30 degrees reduction in temps* (From 95C to 60-65C) Thank you so much for this, my laptop runs so much cooler with no noticeable slow whatsoever. EDIT: For demanding titles, the drops do get noticeable, and I set it back to 100% but only when I need the performance. Also, it helps a lot if you repaste your laptop. I just repasted my GF65 with Kryonaut Thermal Grizzly (the old preapplied thermal paste was rock hard) and even on 100%, my laptop has never throttled unlike before.
exactly the same for me, not appreciable decrease on performance, playing lost ark at maximum settings. Before this change if I'd play long periods of time my computer would simply shutdown because too hot. Now it's much much better! This video and comment saved me from sending my laptop back. Thanks for this. I have a MSI GE66 Raider that I have had for a few years, never had any major overheating issues with it. Played Baldurs Gate 3 at launch on ultra settings, clocked in over 250 hours with no issues, but just this week for some reason, the laptop has been shutting down while playing for only 30-45 minutes or so. I havent moved it or anything so it is getting the same air flow it always has. Pulled up Dragon Center and saw that my CPU was close to 100 degrees C while running BG3, I'm guessing it was shutting down due to overheat. I tried capping frame rate, going to full screen mode, all kinds of stuff, no change in temp, even the cooler boost mode to ramp my fans up did nothing. This fix you present dropped my temp by 10-15 degrees, and another 15-20 if I turn cooler boost on, and no more shutdowns. I restored my game settings all back to what they were, no fps cap, etc, and I see no noticeable performance hit at all. I appreciate it.

Yes - but it affects performance a lot too since you turn off turbo here. But it def. helps temps!

Just know you limit cpu performance quite a bit. Fine for gpu heavy tasks though :)
came across this post after noticing that my CPU was running around 85-90 Celsius on Dragon center - Sport mode on my MSI GP62mvr 7RFX Leapard Pro on games like Forza 5. Also I have Cooler boost on in fan mode which makes the fan run harder so will try to run it in basic and see what happens.
thanks a lot! i've been playing Battlefront 2 a lot on my GF75 and it stayed on 80-90 c almost all the time and after i watched this video i did what you did and it does not go higher than 70 c. thanks!
I got the gf75 I hope this works!
@Sam K I mean for me it’s perfectly fine and my temps are good so I don’t really need to undervolt for now at least but when I play warzone it goes to 80-90c but for the most part it’s fine!
I just got a gf75 and noticed the high temperatures while gaming (up to 90 something). would you be able to share the parameters you used in your configuration? And also, did you notice any important changes in performance and/or processor speed? Cheers!
@@IkixxZummaz I just set the CPU maximum power to like 90-95 on both options that say plugged in and on battery power. I haven’t noticed any frame drops before and most games have 80-130 FPS so you should be fine

thanks! it legitimately worked for me, The drop was from 94 to 62. Just incredible!
Hi, would you be able to share the parameters you used in your configuration? Cheers!

Thanks a lot. Went from 95 to 70-80 when playing valorant at the cost of like 20 fps. Now I am getting 120-140

And I've only just gotten my MSI GF65 Thin 95SD.

Oh wow - that is amazing. With somewhat kept performance too?
@@w2best Yes, though now it stays around 40 degrees when I am not gaming, and goes up to 60 when I am (depending on the game). But besides that I do not lose performance at all. Probably thanks to the cooling system I have on this machine.
@@TheLapisProductions That's perfect! So happy it works so well for you! :)
bro i have the same laptop but with rtx 2060 and holy when i play gta after 25 min it goes from 85 fps to 50
That is because doing this disables the turbo boost. Which means the CPU can't go over 2.6GHZ so the temperature loss is normal. If you are a video editor and want to get the most out of it, you need to reapply thermal paste and/or put the CPU on max cooler boost fans
Incredible!
I was about to buy a $100 cooling pad but watched this and since the settings were easy to change I did them and using MSI afterburner to monitor my FPS and CPU temp i got this;

Unreal. I've been plagued by this problem ever since I got my laptop a year and a half ago and I've never been able to solve it. Thank you so very much for this fix. Incredible find. Will update if the fix ever reverts to shutting down my laptop while gaming.
doesn't this just disable turbo ? I use throttle stop and set the ratio to 3.5 and normally my cpu doesn't go above 80C.
So simple... And yet, so efficient !
From 95/97°C (with many up and down) to a constant 75°C in game (The Witcher 3) on my brand new msi GE75.

It's 2020. My MSI GS65 8RF GTX 1070 with liquid metal & premium thermal pads was reaching 95 Celsius degrees! After your video procedures it's under 70!!! Wow! You deserve a trophy! Many thanks!!!
My friend! You have no idea how much I thank to you
5 years later and this video worked wonders for my GF63!
That's great!
This is extremely useful. I set mine to 99% and I experience:
- No drop in performance for mainstream esport games
- A few, but quite noticeable, frames less performance for demanding titles
- A whopping *30 degrees reduction in temps* (From 95C to 60-65C)
Thank you so much for this, my laptop runs so much cooler with no noticeable slow whatsoever.
This describes the same for me on my MSI GE66 RTX 2070 super, I7-10875H. From 95C to 60-65C! Edit: In Unturned I get frame drops from 60 to 15 ...
exactly the same for me, not appreciable decrease on performance, playing lost ark at maximum settings.
Before this change if I'd play long periods of time my computer would simply shutdown because too hot. Now it's much much better!
This video and comment saved me from sending my laptop back. Thanks!!!
