Protip: You can disable the safety features and leave the lid open while cutting if you reach in behind the front fascia and click the two buttons on the left. They're simple ratcheting black plus-sign click buttons. It's a real crap design. You cannot disable JUST the drawer, or JUST the lid protection. All-or-nothing.

I work at an advanced manufacturing facility run by NJIT. In our fleet of awesome equipment we have a Phillips hybrid. It combines a HAAS UMC750 with a Meltio metal additive system. The reason i bring it up is because it uses a set of 6 200W diode lasers to fuse metal wire into 3D shapes. I'm not sure exactly what laser tech it uses but i know they are a type of blue diode laser. They are not ytterbium fibber lasers. They are definitely the most powerful CW non fiber lasers Ive come across. But the Meltio system cost as much as my house so its not really fair to compare it to a desktop laser cutter.

As a laser operator hustling joblists between 3 10+ KW industrial fiber lasers, I have no use for a desktop laser cutter, but I can't deny the incredible inspiration to create this machine would give people. To be fair, I'm privvy to have access to equipment capable of cutting 30mm RVS at higher speeds than this 60 watt diode laser can manage.
I'm hoping the desktop laser cutting space will have room for improvement regarding metal cutting. In my opinion, the true home laser revolution will only happen when these things are capable of cutting atleast 3 mm rvs or cheap cold rolled steel. I'm holding my breath on Aluminium, given the high reflectivity being the number one factor for decreasing laser lifetime. Steel should be a decent possibility, if the industry is willing to invest in air protection. Cutting steel creates very fine rust powder, especially when using helper gas like Nitrogen. At industrial scale, it's not uncommon for 16 bar's of nitrogen being pushed through a 1.5 mm gaslens/nozzle. Bedslats are eroded away to nothing by cutting Aluminium on Nitrogen, but they accumulate slag when cutting thick steel on Oxygen, etc etc.. Tldr; there is many hurdles to be overcome before that kind of capability trickles down to the hobby and homeshops..

  • @andrewclingan4052

Thank you for your excellent review. I'm fortunate to have a 40watt Falcon and can say its an incredibly versatile tool. The added protection is a very good idea, however the problem you had with the cover is entirely predictable. You have to question just how much you need to see what's going on when the laser is firing. Much better to have good access to line up work. With out a cross hair, I question how you can use one for precision work. I fitted one using you previous video and it's essential. I find the edge burning of wood difficult to accept. Better to stay within sensible thickness of material surely. I have used a 2kw laser in the past and to see it cut 6mm steel is something to experience. Finally Lightburn is one of the best programs I've ever used, it doesn't stop delivering.

I understand because I used to think like that too until I considered the 'coincidences'. The fact that Jesus fulfilled over 300 prophecies with just one being nearly impossible to fabricate is one in a billion and considering it's been 2000 years since and many many people still claim Jesus is working and doing things in their lives today suggests a mere coincidence is off the table. @@joshuadelisle See, the problem isn't being canceled. The problem is when you start preaching, you offend a large part of your audience. I respect your faith and wish you the best for it, but hearing about it continuously, framed as your wanting to "save" anyone is instantly exhausting. You do you, and if that's what you want your channel to become, all power to you. I'm sure there's an audience for that, but I'm not part of it.
That you might put a psalm on your chair? Fine. Telling me that you're going to save me, and belabor it in the comments? Hard pass.
You see what you see. You believe what you believe. That it makes your life richer and more complete is wonderful. The central problem with religion starts when you think your point of view is superior to someone else's, and it's your job to shove it down someone else's throat. I can assure you that I, and others like me, are perfectly happy with our current state. Yet we have been grated on for our entire lives by people who think we're less because we're not followers of your flavor of religiosity, and that's a red flag that isn't ignored.
Be full, be complete, be an example of your faith. That isn't offensive.

@@thesalopgardener That's unfortunately the case for a lot of people, I myself have witnessed terrible behaviour from members of churches. Note that Jesus spoke directly against these people and warned that corrupted people like that will show up in churches (Matthew 7:15 - they come in sheep's clothing but inwardly they are ravenous walves) and even Paul in Corinthians also addresses church disputes and encourages resolving them. Not every church is alive or spirit filled which depends on if the leadership is too controlling or religious and does not allow freedom of his spirit. We are however called to fellowship and work together as a united church. Remember Lions prowl around herds, they wait for one to go astray because the group is too Strong together and united. I would highly recommend joining a new church that is working in exactly the way it's described in the Bible. Like Jesus said 'you'll know by their fruit'. Cheers J

Diameter of Laser Beam will have a significant effect, 60 W with a 0.6mm beam diameter means you are getting 212 Watts per square mm, if we look at a 20W laser with a 0.06mm beam diameter (as claimed by Neje) you get a massive 7073 Watts per square mm but this is not the only factor, the basw wattage of the laser controls how fast you get heat transfer so if you could get the same size beam on a 60W laser it would be up at 21,219 Watts per square mm or 100 times the energy per square mm, so you are looking at optics, most diode lasers use a prism to focus all of the diodes to a single point not fibre optics, you get a small amount of energy loss in the prism, thus whilst the diodes produce 5.5W optical output you loose about 0.5W per diode as it passes through the prism and focussing lens, so in theory you can get more power from a diode laser IF you can improve the Prism and focussing Lens to get a smaller beam diameter, however getting improved prisms may not be cost effective, there are significant price jumps between 4, 8 and 12 diode lasers and this is down to the cost of the ever more complicated prisms. (I've shown the calculations for a perfect circular straight sided beam, the reality is that the beam will not be perfectly circular and is more likely to look like a tiny rectangle with rounded off corners that forms a slightly hourglass shaped beam but the principles are correct, the tighter the beam diameter for the same optical power the more efficient it will be at cutting)
As for cutting, in theory you should run at 90% of full power to prolong the life of the LED's and cut as quickly as possible with the best airflow (speed and volume) as you can, only reducing output power if you can get full depth cuts at maximum speed and 90% power, but you may find max speed causes other issues so need to lower this, this reduces the excess burning you get around cuts through deeper material, also ideally you want to extract the smoke from below, this helps prevent the lens getting coated in soot and other stickier materials.
You should where possible change the height of the laser where you need to do multiple passes, these diode lasers do not have a perfect parallel sided beam, thus if you cut thick materials without altering the height above the material you will be concentrating most of the energy of the laser at a set height within the material which will result in significant charring and may cause fires as you see in your video cutting the thick MDF
For engraving slightly defocussing the beam may give better results with a more even mark.

Hi Joshua would you be willing to do an update of your Sheppach metal bandsaw? I purchased one but it arrived in terrible condition, I'm not sure if I should order a replacement or get my money back.
What are your thoughts? Is yours still in ok working order maybe this was just a one off?
    Regards
    Rob

@@Hammerandhilt Hi Rob. I used mine in the video previous to this one for making an aluminium heat exchanger. I would send it back for a replacement if it's in bad condition. It should be perfect otherwise. It's definitely a cheap model so you can't expect too much but mine is working just fine for what I need. Cheers J

Cheers for taking the time to reply, yes this model is a very bad case the casting for one wheel is way out so causes the frame to bend excessively when running, and the potentiometer in the trigger is causing the speed to pulsate but I have seen so much good spoken about them.
I understand they are a hobby grade but I only plan to use it as a substitute for cutting small stock every now and again to save on grinder discs.
      Regards Rob
