Hi Dave. Great video content. May I ask an extension to your sub-surface foiling use-case? Can this be applied to an embossed design which recedes below the material surface level. If so, is the a limit to the resolution of the details? Thank you.
This process should work; however, the depth and detail must be kept within certain limits. Excessive detail may cause the process to fail, so I would advise some testing on some scrap materials to find your limits.
@@TrotecLaser As an alternative, would precious metal (e.g., gilding), with or without a spray adhesive allow better preservation of embossed details. Would you follow that with an epoxy topcoat to increase durability?
I have tried this, but it is far more complex. Gilding is more of an art form, and it takes practice. The laser cannot cut real metals, so it would have to be completed by hand into the engraving with a mask down into the engraved material surface. And yes, it needs to be clear-coated for protection.
How durable and permanent is the laser foil on wood or acrylic? Seems it peels off easily after each project meaning that the other foil might come off easily over time?
This material becomes more robust with time. After a few days, it is bonded tight and becomes very challenging to remove from any smooth surface like finished wood or acrylic. It is a surface material, making it less durable than a paint fill. It is more prone to scratching, so I would not use this on something that is going to be handled every day, like a tumbler, yes it will work, but it will not hold up to the punishment of a dishwasher and cup holders; this material works best for things like ornaments, signage, and decor.

As I said in the video, adding a clear sealant will improve durability, but this was not shown in the video on the leather. You'll need to engrave the product while it's tightly positioned against the rulers to ensure proper alignment. After engraving, remove the product and apply the foil into the engraved area, removing any excess. Then, place the product back into the machine in the exact same position and engrave the next section. Repeat this process as needed. The key is to always position the product or material in the same spot, usually tight against the ruler, to ensure consistency throughout.
Laser Foil has a permanent adhesive that will continue to bond better with time; if it is going to be on something that will be handled a lot, it may need to be sealed to make it even more durable as this is a surface adhesive material, I did not seal this example in the video.
Isn't this product a laminating foil used in laser printers? Because it looks very similar to that product. I used to use it a lot to make varnish on paper.
I have reached out, and I do not have a source for laser foil anywhere in the EU. Currently, if you want this material, you will need to order from the USA from the video link.

Cool video Dave what is the minimum powered laser and type for this to get perfect results 80w?
This process will perform effectively even with laser wattages as low as 10 watts, though it will be slower at lower wattages.
@TrotecLaser which hard woods do you prefer
Any wood you choose will work; ensure it is first smooth and finished, and the lighter wood will produce better contrast.

For pressing the foil into those inlays I would suggest using a vacuum forming machine (or a bag and your Shop vac)

How would you go about adding a second color to the engraved/inset? Say you did the silver in the engrave and wanted to make the surface level Blue?

Great vid. Does this work with a Co2 laser?
Thank you. All processes were completed with a CO2 laser.
Looks great, one problem is it's not available in the UK.
I contacted our office in the UK to see if they could help find a source; I will let you know what they find. 😃
Does the foil work with any laser?
This will work with any C02 laser.
how long does the foil last sticking to the wood, do we have to add extra clue to it to make it stick longer?
This material has a "permanent adhesive," and that bond strengthens with time; no additional glue is necessary.
How does it stay on the leather? You didn’t seal it in any way.
Laser Foil has a permanent adhesive that will continue to bond better with time; if it is going to be on something that will be handled a lot, it may need to be sealed to make it even more durable as this is a surface adhesive material, I did not seal this example in the video.

Nice. Will this work with a diode laser?
Absolutely!
Can this be done with a diode laser? I have a 22W diode, but I know the Trotec is fiber & CO2. Either way, this is so beautiful!
This material will work fine with a diode laser.
Will this work with diode lasers?
Yes, it will!
What power diode would be needed? @@TrotecLaser
10 watts and above will work, but the more power, the faster the results.

"Laser Foil" was specifically created for C02 Laser cutting and engraving machines.

Enjoy the shininess.🤩
Can it be used with blue diode or fiber? Such as a xtool F1?
This should work, but I do not use a blue diode laser. Contact X-tool to be sure.
I wonder how well laser foil would hold up on engraved tumblers?
I have done it and so far, it seems to hold up quite well as long as it is hand-washed!!
Would this work with a diode laser?
It should work with no problem with a diode laser
Is this only possible with a CO2 or can you do this with a diode as well?
Yes, this process should work just fine with most diode lasers; if you can engrave wood, then this process will work.
