6013 is a general repair rod. It's not out dated, and commonly used for repairs by millwrights in manufacturing settings.

I still have a Lincoln SP100 and a Miller 225G in my garage as well as a cutting torch (oxyfuel). I do not work in the trades so it gets only periodic use. Congratulations on the new tool.

DIY welder for someone learning

Not a bad welder for a home hobbyist that needed a quick fix. The reliability factor would be my biggest concern. Hopefully it's not a one time use machine.
I purchased a Alpha TIG 201dx once, and it lasted two years. I enjoyed the welder and it done good, but 2 years is a limited time for $800. Needless to say I didn't repurchase another one. Called customer support and it was going to cost 60% of the initial cost to repair it. I said, "No thank you". :)
