Tower of Power still tours. They just did a COVID-19 safe concert in Ventura, CA. It was a "Concert in Your Car" with people remaining in their cars. The band is a big older but still kicking that funky Oakland Stroke sound.
This is a great song. Rocco Prestia on bass, smokin'. Chester Thompson on Hammond. Such a tight groove.
Welcome to what we listened to day and night back in the 70's. Add in Chicago, Herbie Hancock and Steely Dan. No music like that anymore, that's why it is classic.
Yeppers bro!
Glad you liked it. One note...after the guitar solo, flugelhorn solo and then the tenor sax solo...when the organ solo starts, the bass player lays out and the organist Chester Thompson begins playing the organ's bass pedals with his left foot, comping chords with his left hand and soloing with his right. Thanks again for playing my choice and will be visiting streamlabs with more requests. Aloha!
I love the way you broke that down
@@mookX92 CT is pretty awesome!! It's amazing to watch him do this song live!
The song may be familiar because ESPN plays it going to commercials during NBA games, especially the Warriors since Tower of Power is an Oakland band.
we would dance to this whole song at the private undergrounds parties at David Mancuso the loft. it was magical to dance to this
Tower of Power crushed this!!! That horn section was one of the best in the business back in the day. And the organ player was getting off as well.
Yeah they did! Tower of Power usually do kill it!
They're still performing... after 52 years and killing it. BTW... they founding bass player died recently... RIP Francis Rocco Prestia...
That's Chester Thompson playing the organ on this album.
@@boardmanfan I believe Chester wrote it too. Great song
@@MikeCoggan True it's written by Chester "CT" Thompson
Rocco Prestia and David Garibaldi, it doesn't get any groovier than that.
Rest in Funk, Rocco
The tightest rhythm section this world has ever seen and experienced!
Skip is gone too.
Oakland's pride and joy! Back in the 70s , when this was happening, Tower Of Power was more popular on the east coast than on the west coast. Weird.
I've seen them about four or five times and they're non stop funkin and groovin. I love these guys. So sad that Rocco died. There will never be another one like him.
Yes, but Marc VW is a monster.
Glad you went into T.O.P territory young man. Keep up the great work. There's quite a bit in their catalog for you to play. Another great instrumental by them is "Walkin' up hip street"
young this is what us OGS call FONK one of the classic North Cali horn bands, probably the best, i'm sure others think different, i'll love them all. former trumpet player and these guys are really great.
GREETINGS.
DAVID GARIBALDI.......A MASTER DRUMMER. His intricate drumming is what drives TOWER OF POWER as well as the LEGENDARY HORN SECTION.
PURE FUNK.
EVERYTHING IS IN DIVINE ORDER.
Agreed. The band would have not been the same without him.
That trumpet solo was actually a flugelhorn solo. Nice mellow sounds brass horn.
Check out What Is Hip by these guys.
Now that you have experienced the music, watch the band perform this tune. 10 musicians working as one with some of the finest players at their craft and internationally known and revered. You would like the experience.
Yes, Tower of Power "Back to Oakland" Lp I like "Just when we start making it." Lenny Williams vocal range is perfect for this group of horns.
Wow what a terrific Track!!! Never hear this by Tower of Power. Very Impressive and so are you
Just Jammin.
The best Funk / Jazz band EVVVVAA !!!
David Garabaldi phenomenal drummer,,,you can listen to this 50 times and still catch new sounds.
An absolute masterpiece. The way each section supports each soloist and builds the intensity around him. And DG makes the whole song with that power funk drumming
There is some real tight and heavy serious groove going on here!! You can never ever go wrong with these guys my biggest heroes! Thanks for reacting man. This was released way back in 1974 and the band still do it to this day!
T.O.P. 🔥💯🤩🤙🏼❤️ Thanks for playing their music. May they live on forever.
My favorite song from Tower of Power you should check out a great song to jam on a pair of roller skates is Rock baby it's also funky + them funky horns are on point. Others are Boy night out, Slow Jams: Heaven must have made you, Willing to learn.
Great reaction. You actually listen and feel the groove instead of talking over like so many others. Their rhythm section is THE BEST
Chester Thompson bass pedals and smoking solo! Rocco walks off on this part, LEGEND!
Check out their first album: East Bay Grease. Most sought after brass section by other artists. Huey Lewis used them. Another Bay Area band to check out is Cold Blood. Lydia Pense.
Seem them almost 100 times. I've got ToP ocd and I love it! RIP Rocco
Lead singer Lenny Williams, went solo and recorded the Choosing You album in 1977… very good.
Check out the song, Choosing You.
My dad's favorite band and his favorite jam. Chester F'ng Thompson.
DUDE! Putting me up on game! I have heard bits and pieces of the song probably in samples or something but never in it's entirety. And didn't know the name or title although I've seen it somewhere before. Appreciate the education. Yeah I'm still learning after years of listening to music and even Deejaying and record collecting. Great instrumental funk jazz groove.
You have got to listen to this other track: “Boys of the bay”; definite a must, that is totally funky!!
I took my friend deaf and blind and the rhythm he felt beneath his feet and vibe in his body had him soaring dancing grooving like never before he went out and purchased 3 albums and that's all he plays in his apartment Lloyd my Great Friend
An awesome song...one of the best! Full blown Tower Of Power!
I have discovered my new favorite, tower of power.
Where have i been all these years?
Btw the dancing sax player of TOP heads up Saturday Night Lives band.
I recall a Instrumental entitled Check It Out which was like a prerequisite to this song, too.
Check out Ebony Jam from their In The Slot Album! funky drum intro groove, great solos by the same 4... Bruce, Greg , Lenny , and Chester.
God be with Bruce Conte who recently departed.
Down by the River. Buddy Miles live. Laid back but dynamically soulful rendition . Before he was the voice of The Raisins.
Other than Jimmy Smith, Chester Thompson was the absolute B-3 master.
The anthem of Bay Area Funk, beats by the great David Garibaldi, and the sax solo was done by Lenny Pickett the bandleader of SNL. That's right, the cat that rips the sax every Saturday Night Live in NY.
One of the Baddest Bands in the Land, Induct TOP in the Hall of fame !!
Trombone!!! Isolate that bass - pure funk - Rocco (RIP)
An extra crispy song from TOP...
Indeed it is!
A perfect description, sir!
Straight Jammin ...you can relate !
Not sure if it matters, but the band members were all in their 20's when they recorded this album. The band is now in its 54th year after having their 53rd anniversary in Aug of 2021.
Check out "(To say the least) You're the Most" and "I've Got to Groove." So cool!
Flugelhorn solo by Greg Adams.
incomparable David Garibaldi from Oakland on drums on this right here song.
Also while the bass player is a beast, the organist, Chester Thompson is playing bass pedals.
Hottest rhythm section ever
Required listening for high school musicians back then
summer madness
Maaaan. This is just so good.
A cool breeze. Tasty herb. And ice cold Boone's farm nothing better.
Young Man I so glad your getting hip to TOP Now Check out COLD BLOOD SHOP TALK and LYDIA PENSE You be Blown away This is when MUSIC was the GREATEST CREATIVE FUNKY GROOVE and SOUL Check it Out.
Never be another drummer like Garibaldi
Greg Adams on Fluegelhorn solo not trumpet
TOP has been at it since 1968. One of, if not the hardest working band EVER. Treat yourself and listen to a bunch of their other albums. They are all magnificent in their own right.
It's a fleugelhorn.
Doc Kupka!!! I love the horn player and Doc is the best on the alto Sax
Doc plays the Baritone Saxophone. Lenny Pickett would occasionally play alto on some of their tunes, but was mainly on tenor. He was only 18-19 years old when the Back to Oakland album as recorded. A monster player.......and the music director of the SNL Band for the last 20 + years.
If you want ToP with alto sax, check out their live videos from the European shows where Dutch alto sax player Candy Dulfer joined them. The girl can flat-out play!!
In general they haven't had that much alto sax on their albums cause a vast majority of all their sax players played tenor. However you can check out Move You Loose from the mid '80s featuring my favorite alto player Marc Russo or listen to the Monster on a Leach album where Steve Grove (today Euge Grove) plays alto sax.
Good other instrumentals by TOP - "Ebony Jam" and "Walkin' Up Hip Street" Top flight artists.
TOP is the baddest band with the baddest rhythm section of all time. Everyone knows the words, it's the groove that makes you move....
The best horn section then now and forever @
SNLs original horn section, so not sit com, but live comedy.
Love your channel. Please try Fence Walk by Mandrill!!!
saw them 20times
BTW, Squib Cakes means "booty"...
bruce conti just die last week
I hate to say but vinyl, reel to reel and cd does not do justice to the Tower of Power Experience. You must see them live, on stage. You’ll not only hear the music but you’ll feel the soul in your chest and heart and then and only then will you truly experience Soul Vaccination Tower of Power Style. I PROMISE!!!
Flugel horn
