I wish you the best and I am excited for those of us you will educate. May our Lord bless you. This is Ray Bohacz, but for some reason it is identifying me as my wife, a kindergarten teacher. the woes of the internet!
Thank you for the in depth and very clear/understandable video!! I am.so surprised it took me so long to come across this video. I installed a set of these Aldan Coilovers on my 85 Grand National and it was very very straight forward. I watched this video after I had installed my set, but it is good to know that I did it almost identical to you.....other than I had my car completely assembled. Thanks again!
Jeff, I was wondering if you happened to work at Paul's Conoco in Ames, Iowa? If so, do you remember Denny Jordan (or my mom Rose)? I hate to leave a public comment like this but I have a old photo from that time I was trying to see if it's you in photo. We were going through some old photos of his as he passed away last Friday.
Jeremie - Yes! I most certainly remember Denny. I'm sory to hear that he passed away. He was a great guy and wonderful to work with. I learned a lot about working on cars from him! He solved an issue with Paul's Bronco that I remember to this day because his solution was so brilliantly simple - he found it and showed it to me. I was amazed. Thanks for contacting me. My email address is lanejsmith@yahoo.com. I'd love to see the photo.
Good stuff, the only thing that I see is that I would have also installed one of those plates that go on the lower mounting pad that strengthens that area.
We checked with the guys at Aldan and they said: "With our brackets, mini tubbing the rear end should be fine. As long as the upper shock mount/bracket and the lower shock mount/bracket are in line - There should be plenty of clearance for the tub.".
great video. i dont know the final intent of your car but want to ask how coil overs ride compared to the stock performance coil springs available? i also have a gm a-body and every manufacture has there own recipe to correct geometry with both stock spindle and taller spindles, i just want a street performance setup and dont think i would be adjusting ride height after it is set. i think using conventional shocks that are tuned would be sufficient. your blue 65 chevelle was always a performer!
We don't have the car finished as yet so I can't really comment on ride quality for this Aldan system. This is so much of a subjective subject that personal impressions are all we could offer anyway. I can tell you that ride quality has much more to do with shock valving than actual coil spring rates. It's a common misperseption that high spring rates make the car ride rough. You can have stock spring rates with a stiff shock that will ride very badly. With the adjustability of these shocks, my sense is that you could find a combination that would ride very nicely. Yes, I'm suer you could find a traditional shock and spring combination that would offer both ride quality and decent handling without converting to coil-overs.
@@jeffsmith2003 yes i agree. there are so many endless combinations. i wanted to go with global west g-plus upper /lower control arms with there springs. thanks
Going tubular on the upper gives you more control over the caster/camber. The lower isnt as critical for that. I would assume thats why he didnt change it.
can i ask if you know what magazine month/ year the red w/ flames 65 el camino was in? i miss the magazines had 4 subscriptions and no idea why they stopped them. i have the dieast model of the red with flames 65 el camino.
We asked the folks at Aldan American to reply to your comment: We offer reinforcing plates that are designed to add extra support for the stock A-arms and will work with a lot of the tubular arms. We developed the plates after we released the kits. They are an optional upgrade like the thrust bearings.

With those rear brackets, can you still minitub the rearend? Seems like the bracket is now in the way?

What made u put Tubular upper A arm but stock lower arm? I’m doing the exact same set up as you. Didn’t feel the need to spend the money on the lower.

We’re can I get this kit

I will never be a fan of sitting the car weight on a shock mount. At least there should be a steel plate under there.
