this is so far the best guitar channel I've encountered- you're just such sweet people with personal opinions about guitars and who have simultaneously an amazing ethos.
I am a big fan of jazzmasters myself, I love limited edition guitars, even though I am only now buying my first electric guitar after a year of researching and craving so much for it! (I am an intermediate at classic guitar, just can't love it) I think it's finally happening and I might be getting that squier late 50s one thanks to you! if I do, I'll be sharing it with you folks on IG for sure.

Robert Smith is my Jazzmaster hero, he's the reason I got one (along with Adrian from the "AnyoneCanPlayGuitar" youtube channel) . It was used as the main guitar on The Cure's first 4 albums. Robert originally had an old cheap Japanese guitar made by a company called Teisco. He loved the sound of it, however, when turning up to record his first album the engineer flat out refused to let him use it. He then went and bought a Jazzmaster simply because he loved the look of it, he then cut a hole in between the two pickups and installed one of the pickups from his old tesco guitar into it. The pickup would only activate when in the rhythm circuit and it gave the guitar a really unique sound which is still to this day my favourite guitar tone of all time.

I actually fairly recently found an old, EARLY 60's, 'Tulip' Teisco, E-110 model, with a single pick-up.
I got it for $75 at my favorite pawn shop in overall pretty dang good condition. 😁
The shop owner told me he'd recently bought it from the orig owner, who told him that it never worked right as an electric, but the pickguard does show some 'acoustic' use, it actually projects well acoustically, for a 1 piece slab😉. *I can't find any glue seams on the back, in the thin, tobacco burst finish.*
AND, It's actual wood!! No idea what kind, but I inspected all the routing, and I know wood when I see it! 😅
Not the particle board or cardboard, that some back then have been claimed to be made of. It has a steel neck inlay, but no truss rod 🤔, it has the 3/8" wide, 'Zero fret' and that nifty, chrome, string break angle bar, set up the head, just past the nut.
Alas, the low E plastic tuner head had cracked & popped off when it got to the pawn shop, and someone heavy-handedly tried to break the seized tuner free by brute force. Fortunately they then sprayed the other tuning gears with WD-40 before going any further!
After not being able to find a suitable replacement in my tub of things, happily, some superglue on the slightly scuffed up tip of the metal shaft & some baking soda in the receiving hole & into the cracks, remedied that.
It's a straight 6 inline strip of connected tuners, so I really wanted to keep the original look, & spacing! I MAY end up setting the original tuners aside, and upgrade a bit. Maybe?
And, after being told by my long time local tech that repairing the tuner knob was a lost cause (He even had some Teisco tuner strips, but wouldn't sell them or even a tuner arm. He claims they are junk, but he sure seems to want mine😉)
FINALLY, when I stripped it all down, (so I could lube those old tuning gears, check the wiring, and then know 'I' put it back together correctly) I discovered a nice, neat, very round wire loop snaked thru the body from the pots, AND a ground screw, under the ashtray style string mount that had never been introduced to each other at the factory.
Seems the original owner never investigated the wiring issue.
Once I grounded It, I found I had a unique, functioning, electric sound I just can't get from my *admittedly AWESOME* stock Red Squier DEEELUXE Jazzmaster with the gold anodized pickguard. (Made in the same factory & one of the years as the J Mascis models, but allegedly different, actual Jazzmaster style pups. Vs. MAYBE (?) P-90's style pups on the J Mascis. I've heard they sound different, but I can't say from experience.
Both awesome rigs in their own right. For a (originally) $50+/- guitar sold at Montgomery Ward in the late 50's - 60's, for $50 or so, I discovered a piece of history in that Teisco Tulip E-110! And it's way more than a wall hanger due to the easy life it's had electrically speaking.
No dings to speak off, even. At $25 over it's new price, ~60 years later I scored BIG with that Teisco IMHO.

Sonic Youth - Thurston and Lee both played Jazzmasters. Sometimes very heavily modified.

For me Jazzmaster = Sonic Youth. And i’m à big fan of Shannon Wright, she is so wild on her Jazzmaster (90s mij fsr gold hardware)
the Ventures (& surf music bands in general) often used Jazzmasters too... they sound great for roots-rockabilly & blues style sounds too..

I got off the tv to get here, to comment that Thurston Moore played one with them🙂
And he LOVED plinking behind the bridge, it became a sort of signature sound for him. Tho to be sure, many others use them as well!

It really sounds lush and beautiful even with the drive added with Tia’s playing. Sorry Jason I love your playing too when you do play :P lol adding the Dave chapelle’s skit it’s facts! Those pickups are awesome. I also default saying it like the cat but I don’t think Michael would hate that association haha
Members of Stereolab, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, CuffedUp, The Saddest Landscape and Frameworks also come to mind as Jazzmaster players.
Troy Van Leeuwen from Queens of the Stone Age/ APC/ Failure is a Jazzmaster player.
those pickups are looovely, tones from 5 mins onwards are lush.
I agree! Which is why I’m going back and forth about these antiquities.
Now that I’ve modded my CV late 50s JM I can verify that these are the exact same pickups that are in the CV 60s JM. Specifically, they are the M26101 in the neck position and the M26102 in the bridge position. Of note, Roswell makes and sells 26101 and 26102 JM pickups so I expect that the pickups are Duncan Designed but Roswell made. The downside of these pickups is the fact that they glue on the covers, making it difficult to swap out the covers to use with another pickup. The good news is, you can find a pair of plastic covers on Reverb for around $15 shipped.

My Jazzmaster heroes are J Mascis and Nels Cline, who I both consider to be some of the greatest guitarists ever. Love that this reissue is quite similar to the one that J uses live

Watched less than 3 minutes so far and this is my new favorite UA-cam channel!! Excellent review/demo. Recently lost everything to a house fire, so I’m shopping for an affordable guitar to get me by until I can replace my families things, and come across one of these on reverb for a decent price, wanted to do a little research before I order one, and this has just been great. (I realize the vid is a year old, but it’s right at the top of the search on yt for these demos)
Sorry to hear about your loss. It really sucks that you had to go thru that. We're so glad we can be a bit of light in the dark times for you. But hey, on the bright side, now you can build up a new collection of newer, better gear.

Thanks for the review, and the info regarding Alnico II in the 50s Jazzmasters. Your players list was missing Tom Verlaine of Television, who used Jazzmasters, and has been pretty influential.
Those pickups…omg…they have a mean bite, especially on the bridge.

Jazzmaster definitely my fav model from fender/squire! I own an affinity with buckers & love it. But I do want one with P90s. It sits in the perfect playing position while sitting down.🤺

Love it! 70s JM players who set the tone for these newer players: Elvis Costello (who has a sig model), Tom Verlaine, Jonathan Richman on the Modern Lovers record.
At the time, the JMs were unloved and affordable.
also, nice Mike Adams shout out. When I lived in Seattle, he repaired and set up my homemade (i.e. shabby) JM

Not even halfway through and I love Jazzmasters and miss my 63" :( and this has a very similar tone. Thanks for the good playing and no nosense dialioge while still a wee bit of humor. Yes working class rules
It's true that the vibrato is a bit less well made than the mex or US one but it works fine... + a Mastery vib' costs about half the price of this guitar..
Tia's right: it doesn't need to be modded but can be a nice platform (ditto for the Vintera series, but I like the indian laurel better than the pau ferro board, for aesthetic reasons)
I’ve found that if your not dive-bombing them, they do alright.
Traverse Town music! nice! Jazzmaster also sounds lush.
Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, even though Lee sometimes plays modded Jazzmasters with old Fender cunife wide range pickups. Cory Hanson of Wand primarily plays one in that band. Robert Smith of The Cure used one a lot on their older albums, although I believe he had a pickup from a Vox modded between the two standard pickups as well as one without that mod. Also Simon Raymond of Cocteau Twins used one on some things and Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips uses one a lot. Win Butler of Arcade Fire has used them. Thom Yorke of Radiohead uses them on a few songs. Luther Perkins used one a lot on Johnny Cash's records, and Roy Clark was known to use one. Ric Ocasek of The Cars used one a lot as well. Loads of players out there who favor Jazzy's.
I have a Road Worn 60s MIM JM. I put Antiquity 1s in it and swapped out the vibrato for a Mastery but left the stock bridge. A little Loctite on all the screws and now I won't touch it, plays beautifully. New subscriber!

As for JM players: Elvis Costello of course, and Russell from Band of Skulls. And yes, Seratones are totally awesome! Was lucky to catch them live out here in a small venue, great energy.

I bought the same guitar in the vintage tint so there are now at least two gone from the FSR run. I bought mine from Chicago Music Exchange but people in the UK can get one from Andertons. So Jason and Tia, how could you forget Jessica Dobson of Deep Sea Diver!
BTW, as much as I love Squiers and made in Mexico Fenders, it would be cool to see our hosts take a look at Danelectro - a brand made for the working class musician, if ever there was. But perhaps, Danos do not appeal to Jason and Tia's tastes in guitars and, if so, I would be cool with that.
As an aside, in a previous Squier jazzmaster FSR run video the good folks at Anderton said that a Fender/Squier special run tended to be for 250 units. By pairing with Chicago Music Exchange, Anderton received 125 out of a run of 250 for that particular Squier FSR. So we should be looking out max 123 Squier late 50s jazzmasters left for sale on this side of the pond.
I think they did make Late 50s pickups across the product lines, my Late 50s PBass did and it was the best of the CV pickups I've tried, as far as sounding like what time they were aiming for.
The pots in this Jazzmaster are 1M, swap for 250K CTSs mellows it even further.

Beautiful color. Idk if I can get to 500 on a squire though. Clean tone sounded really nice dirty tone was a bit too bright for me I agree about needing the pups a little darker
At this point, I think they’re worth it. I would dare say Squier makes the best Jazzmaster sub-$1000.
Also check out The Guitaristas’s UA-cam review; the pots are little more than on/off switches and have to go. Still a great guitar at the price, however…

You mention it has a pine body with ash top and back veneers...can you see the ash through the white, or is it a solid non-transparent white?
I think I like the 2 tone Sunburst better, but if the white is even a little bit translucent so you can see the ash grain, then that's pretty tempting...
It’s a poplar body, but it is translucent. It looks a lot nicer in person. I almost went with the two tone sunburst. But, I’m not the biggest sunburst fan.

@@JasonTMays I already have a solid white MIJ 1996 Vista Series Super-Sonic that I bought new in 1996. So the Sunburst Jazzmaster seemed like the logical, varietal choice.
But translucent white, well, that's a whole nother ball game.
May be a controversial mention, but Jesse Lacey of Brand New played mostly Jazzmasters after recording The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me.

Bought the Sunburst model from Andertons 2 weeks ago and the bridge has sunk into the body, going to try some loctite blue thread glue to sort it out otherwise I'll be after a new bridge. I know it's a late 50s model but this is authenticity at it's worst.

Lovely sound on that guitar and entertaining video. My 1st electric was a Futurama strat copy and it weighed a ton and sounded awful as well as being unplayable , it was £25 UK in 1976 which was a lot of dough then. A student today has the best choices for unstruments. It took 40 years to get to the point where a pro would rather use an inexpensive guitar over a 5 X the price original.

Looking at getting my first Jazzmaster and can't decide this or the Squier 60's Jazzmaster?? Can't tell the difference other than aesthetics..
Is there a transparency to the white finish? Seems like I almost bought one of these through Amazon, but got an MPC ONE retro edition instead (I’m a fool).

I'm going to ask the obvious question. How thick is the neck compared to the J Mascis? Thicker? Thinner? I didn't catch that in the video.

It’s a bit thinner than the J Mascis. I will say I prefer the neck on the Mascis more! However, I think that’s the JMJM neck is the 2nd best Jazzmaster neck outside of the Ultra necks.
I haven't tried an ultra, but the Mascis neck is one of my favorites of all time, second only to my 94 American Strat.
My comment is going to sound eye-rollingly cliche but the J mascis neck is the GOAT. I have Gibson’s, fenders, Squiers, Schecters and the j mascis neck is still my favorite, haha. I even put a JM neck on my brothers old Cruse Stat copy and man, that guitar is now amazing !
Good question, yea from the specs nut width is also thinner, I have the Mascis, and the neck is a baseball bat and it kind of bothers me
@@GregDixson I'm a tall dude with monster hands so it's a charm for me. I also have a CV 60s, that one has a thinner neck, you might like that one! (I think this one might have the same neck)

It depends, the neck on the JMJM is pretty legendary and well regarded. But, I personally prefer this because of the vintage accuracy. But, I think the JMJM leans more towards a modern take with all the traditional sensibilities. So, idk! Lol.
I'd say, if you can, try them both out in a store. I have the J Mascis, and don't like the jumbo frets which many love. Also the neck which is very thick, so worth trying first to see if it suits. To be honest I'm thinking of trading in my one for this just for the sensible neck and frets
@Neon Thunderbird yea I'm finding it a common theme that the mascis is a great fit for taller people and bigger hands. This is first for me with jumbos so took some getting used to
