I'm in Louisiana and love it here. We love to eat, and we love to eat good food. The guard he is talking about is the National Guard. Each state has it's own national guard, which is controlled by the governor of that state. So, each states guard can be activated by that governor in case of emergencies. I have many guns. I don't just walk around with em though. They stay locked in the safe unless I'm going hunting or something similar. I do carry a handgun in my truck, all the time. Never know when it may be needed...

On the A/C (air conditioning) , I live in southeast Louisiana. In the summer time, the temp here gets over 100 deg F. With 100% humidity, so the heat index gets to 110 or above on a daily basis. In the winter, the humidity works the opposite way as the summer. The humidity amplifies the feels like temp. It's a deep, bone chilling cold, or a deep bone cooking heat. That's some of the reason we like spicy food, it helps the outside temp to not be so hot or so cold.

Public transportation will *heavily* depend on the city you're in. Some cities/areas have good public transportation, some have basically none.

    • @rtyria
      @rtyria 6 місяців тому +4

30 years ago in my city a standard question on job applications was regarding transportation. I was advised by my school to always put down that my parents would be providing, and never put down "metro". Applications with "metro" automatically ended up in the trash. That's how bad public transportation was back then. That doesn't happen now, though I would never call it very convenient. Most lines only run every half hour and many areas don't have evening service at all. The colleges however have fantastic service, even 30 years ago. This is very much a college town.

The National Guard does belong to each State but the President can nationalize the National Guard in case of an emergency. The Guard is trained to regular military standards, but they also respond to natural disasters and other things.

    • @orclev
      @orclev 6 місяців тому +17

It's also important to point out that there's _also_ a federal military that doesn't belong to any specific state, and _crucially_ the federal military is _generally_ barred from operating within the borders of the US, at least in a military capacity (look up the Posse Comitatus Act). They can provide humanitarian aid and in extreme cases be mobilized, but most of the time it's down to each states national guard to respond to anything that's happening within the borders of the US.
So the power structure within the US is approximately: police < sheriffs < (various specialty agencies like DHS, FBI, Border Patrol) < national guard < military (with major restrictions)
While outside of the US it's: national guard (drafted into military service, national guard are considered a reservist unit for the military) < military

All 50 states + the District of Columbia, the US Territories of Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, & Guam have semi-independent militias known as the National Guard. National Guards are tasked with many duties specifically for their state, territory, or district. Among the duties are to provide civil defense during times of local unrest or localized threats, disaster preparation, aid, & relief. Each National Guard is technically independent & commanded by a state, territory, or district senior military officer known as an Adjutant General who is with a few exceptions appointed by the Governor. Should a National Guard require additional assistance, a Governor can request support from a neighboring National Guard through their Governor. In cases of a national threats such as war, the National Guards can be nationalized, being removed from the control of a Governor to being controlled by the DOD, Department of Defense aka the Pentagon aka the regular full-time military.

I think one important thing about being multi-lingual that he didn't mention is travel distance.
Driving from LA to New york you would never need to read a single sign that wasn't in english, or speak to a person in any other language.
That distance is only about 3% shorter than the distance from Lisbon to Moscow. That drive would put you through regions that speak at least 6 languages depending on your route.
in most EU countries you're only a couple hours at most from a country that speaks a different language so it's more important to be able to communicate with them. But in the US it is unlikely for most to ever travel farther than a neighboring state.

The National Guard do not do law enforcement or military action at home, they do emergency response and large crowd events that either involve many jurisdictions or are beyond the scope of local agencies. Say there is a major earthquake, the Gaurd is called up to organize the response, and that emergency declaration allows them to supersede city or county boundaries and assign or re-assign local emergency agencies into other areas than their normal responsibilities. Basically, they can turn all the local agencies into one super-agency with one coordinator and one communication and resource center rather than having a hundred or more agencies all trying to eat each other. The Gaurd are also called in for riots and other major events where crowds are beyond what the local police can handle.
That said, a president can commandeer the Gaurd for full military duty in a war, and that does occasionally happen.

Well I have seen some folks not that ignorant about geography. I'll include myself in that group. I honestly enjoy learning about geography since it has amazing views that are used in films. New Zealand has locations for Lord of the Rings. Some areas of Sweden are in Game of Thrones. Some areas of China are used in films. Same with some of the coastal views. If I remain ignorant of those views: I honestly won't be grateful for the world I live in. I have such gratitude for the variety of the layout of each countries and their counties/providences.
By the way: I love your Portuguese accent with your English. It is beautiful and I can listen to it for hours. Also I grew up with immigrant parents so I'm used to accented English. "R" and "L" sounds are tricky for Asian speakers.

If you are looking at putting in air conditioning I suggest instead looking into central air.
Central air is a combined system of heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. You set your thermostat low and high and the system does the rest.
Just remember tight thermal windows and good insulation are required to keep your power and heating bills low.
Up close to the Canadian border we try to have insulation in the walls with an R value of at least 25. 40 in the attic.

The Army National Guard is the state militia.
They have bases in every single state and the Governor has to approve the deployment of any National Guard operations. Their main function is protecting the homeland, including disaster response. The National Guard is mobilized for hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes to rescue victims and recover bodies. They are basically the land version of the US Coast Guard. Many National Guard members are retired Army, Navy, Marine, etc and work a couple days a week in trainings. The most recent deployment in NY was the deployment of the New York National Guard to Buffalo to deal with the snowstorm over the weekend.
The New York National Guard has 57 armories, 21 field/support facilities and 3 Army Aviation Support Facilities.
    Closest facilities to me are
Buffalo, Rochester, Jamestown, Lockport, Niagara Falls, Geneseo, and Hornell these vary in size from a building holding vehicles to a decent amount of space for training. These bases which vary from 25 miles away (Geneseo) to 75 miles away (Niagara Falls) have many different divisions. And fall under the 42nd Infantry Division of the US Army National Guard.
Headquartered in Latham, NY it makes up the 42nd Infantry Division of the Army National Guard and has equipment stored around the state. There is also the 53rd Troop Command. There is a facility 30 minutes from my house where they have trucks and Humvees parked.
Under the 42nd Infantry Division is the Headquarters & Support Companies in Troy, Signal Company on Staten Island, 42nd Army Band in Cortlandt Manor, Intelligence & Sustainment Company in Troy, and Operation Company in Buffalo.
This is further divided into the
27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and Combat Aviation Brigade 42nd Infantry Division.
The 27th Infantry is further divided into the 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry Regiment based in Niagara Falls, Geneva, Jamestown and Buffalo. 1st Battalion 69th Infantry Regiment based in Manhattan, Farmingdale and Cortlandt Manor. 2nd Battalion 108th Infantry Regiment in Utica, Geneseo, Morrisonville, Ogdensburg, Saranac Lake, Gloversville, Leeds, and Ithaca. 1st Battalion 258th Field Artillery Regiment in Queens, New Windsor, and The Bronx. 152nd Brigade Engineer Division in Buffalo, Manhattan, Lockport, Syracuse and Rochester.
The Combat Aviation Brigade 42nd Infantry Division maintains a fleet of Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters, they are headquartered in Latham and are divided into the.
3rd Battalion 142nd Aviation Regiment in Ronkonkoma, Latham, and Farmingdale. 1st Battalion General Support 171st Aviation Regiment in Rochester. 642nd Aviation Support Battalion in Rochester, Dunkirk, Olean, Ronkonkoma, and Brooklyn.
The 53rd Troop Command is based in Cortlandt Manor and Manhattan but is also divided into the following.
101st Signal Battalion in Yonkers, Peekskill and Orangeburg. 204th Engineer Battalion in Binghamton, Horseheads, Walton, Cortlandt Manor, Kingston, and Buffalo. 501st Ordnance Battalion (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) in Glenville, Queensbury and Fort Drum. 369th Sustainment Brigade in Whitestone, Manhattan, Farmingdale, Staten Island, New Windsor, and Brooklyn. 153rd Troop Command in Buffalo. 102nd Military Police Battalion in Auburn, Buffalo, Latham, Utica, Rochester, and Hornell. 104th Military Police Battalion in Kingston, Brooklyn, Jamaica (Queens), Cortlandt Manor, and Brooklyn.

I have traveled around the us quite a bit and I would say America is pretty safe. It has a lot of the same rules as any countries. There are places you should not go due to criminal activity, there is nothing there for you and everyone knows where it is, so just ask a local. Tourist areas in large cities are where tourists get robbed, don't accept anything free, don't talk to anyone you don't know, don't buy things in that area, don't have valuables easily accessible. Lastly the south is where most of the US's violence happens. As with most violence its domestic, so not targeting you. Why is it happening there? The south is poor and its easier to kick down than up.

yeah each state has it's own military comprising of a state based national guard.this is in addition to the federal reserve of each branch like marines, army, navy, coast guard, air force and the active military.the reserves on a normal basis have a civilian job like being a Plumber or a truck driver and for 2 weekends a month and 2 weeks a year they train in a military job which could be the same job as in civilian world or something completely different like a gynocologist in civilian world and being a infantry sniper in the military.both dealing with holes,just.......

Public transportation varies by major city to major city. Cities with high populations usually have good public transportation within the city. Smaller cities have inner transportation, but it's not as good. You still can take a train across the United States. Amtrak takes 67 hours from New York City to Los Angeles.

The infant mortality statistics are even more flawed than he said.
In the US, if a baby is born premature and dies, it is counted as an infant death. That is not how it works in most European countries. They don't count that as an actual death.
It all comes down to how each country counts and defines things. And when you account for those differences, the US usually comes out on top.

Every state and some territories have an armed force that is part of the National Guard which is controlled by the chief executive of that jurisdiction (think like the state governor), but can also be federalized when activated by the Federal government. Once federalized, that force is controlled by the Federal government and not the state government.
Some states also have their own military apart from the National Guard that cannot be federalized and under the sole control of the state governor.
There's also the Armed Forces of the United States which are what you commonly think of when you hear about the United States military: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

  • @miamidolphinsfan

Each state has what is called (state name) National Guard. They are usually regular working folks who commit to being guardsman for some extra $$$ every year. They go off a few times a year to train together. What they are usually used for is keeping the peace & extra policing after natural disasters, especially after hurricanes when an area has been completely devasted. At that time the governor of the state may have to impose a curfew for public safety reasons. Als I if there are civil disturbances that endanger the public and private property & public buildings. There is also that guardsmen are our backup military, and can be deployed overseas to supplement the US Military when needed. Many Guardsmen were used in Afghanistan & Iraq to relieve regular soldiers to have some leave time back home to be with their families for a death in the family and just to have a break in their deployment.

Very specific, and for many reasons.
The description implies: weather, wealth, ethnic (or lack of) diversity, cost of housing, etc...
Now, if I said, I were from San Ysidro, San Diego, California? (only 30-40 miles/50-65 km South)...all would be different.

As an American who has been underweight his entire life (my ribs show through my shirt) no matter how much I eat; I always tilt my head like I am looking at zoo animal when a European tries to tell me that I am fat because I live in America, while simultaneously telling me that I don't know where their country is (Which I always do know) AND, apparently, I can't generalize Europe cause it's "So diverse" XD. It's insane how much you hear this nonsense as an American.
Yes, Europeans do get angry/standoffish regarding AC/Heating usage in America. "Making fun of" is not exactly the right wording. I've had this conversation a lot, but never felt "made fun of". The person only ever tried to insult me for it. Never make fun of.
For the accents, 100%, you sound Russian to me (an American). You sound like the perfect russian accent stereotype here.
Also, I liked your Wyoming joke XD
I never understood America being considered Imperialistic. America freed the "free world" from Imperialism. Most of America's territory was bought from its owners. Whenever a territory wants independence, America gives it independence with no questions asked. This stereotype can only exist without reading history.

That geography one at the beginning is why we want not only to help you learn about us, but also why we want to see a "walk down the road" from you in Portugal. Old crumbly buildings? Bring them on! Mostly what I know about Portugal are Knights Templar and guanciale (y'all can turn a pig into heaven).
One of my best friends in college went on to work in Public Health. She's trying to educate people on the dangers of smoking, vaping, even unprotected whoopi (if you get my understanding). There are a lot of people working on the "obesity problem" in the US. I only recently heard of "Ozempic face." That medicine is for diabetes, but helps people lose weight FAST. And that's becoming a problem with people - anyone - who wants to lose weight. Do doctors prescribe it - it will help lose the pounds? And then losing weight that fast makes your skin loose and saggy, leading to "Ozempic Face." So people ARE working on it. Maybe not fast enough?

There is nothing in the US that says every man needs to learn how to use a gun or own a gun, but there are European countries where this is mandatory training for all eligible men.
