Sikhism's criticism of others is well taken. Sikh's critique of self & applying same critical principles to self is criminally missing.

What other community criticizes itself? Sikhs are self critical and proof of that is the Sikh thought, that we somehow were responsible for the attack on Darbar Sahib in ‘84. And we have grown from that thought and have realized that we are and were facing a genocide.

Sikhism's decline has been lack of critical thinking - much needed for intellectual growth & enlightenment of any community.
Leadership matters the most.
In the modern era, Sikh leadership has been & is largely occupied by regressive hardliner elements ( eg. Taksalis , khalistanis etc ) , who have failed to give any positive vision and lack intellectual capacity to indulge in civilised discourse. They have only one answer to any thought critical of their viewpoint i.e. Violence to suppress fundamental human right of freedom of speech of the other.

Well, samvad is a civilized discussion and brainstorming on different aspects of a chosen topic. The people that speak in these Samvads today are mostly Khalistanis. Simranjeet Singh Maan has been leading a political/electoral struggle for Khalistan. There was an armed struggle for a good decade in response to state terror. I’m not distancing the Khalistan movement from violence, there is a necessity for violence when it is in the pursuit of defending oneself from physical assault. But I am bringing to your attention that there are other parts to this movement. So….I’m sorry, I’m not seeing any weight in your claim.
My theory is that the downward trend of today’s Sikhs is due to growing focus on individuality/individualism and the blind acceptance of western philosophy and epistemology.
We view Sikhi through Brahmanical, Abrahamic, and/or modern/enlightenment era lens. We have lost our own vision that took nearly 250 years to organically develop. The Sikh people are and have been under attack for the better part of their short history. For them to be where they are today is still astounding considering they have been nearly wiped out repeatedly through out history.

Any faith tradition = substance ( the spiritual and theological thought ) + optics ( "maryada" ) ! With time the core teachings, the substance gets lost & the followers employ all their energy in upkeep of the optics of it. Same has happened with Sikhism.

Talking about '84 crisis in general and operation blue Star in particular, one must recognise that in a democracy no militia groups can be allowed to dictate to the state at gunpoint . No pragmatic state would allow secessionism through armed rebellion. ( Eg 1. If anyone thinks otherwise, eho jiha Canada , UK, US etc Ch Kar k vekho . Then see if any sane country supports it ? Eg 2. Did Maharaja Ranjit Singh tolerate armed rebellion inside his state without doing anything about it ? )
Objective reality is that bhindranwala ( aka " sodha sadh " - anyone who indulged in criticism of his movement, ohnu "sodha" la deyo rhetoric of his ) was an uneducated dictatorial fanatic, who was initially propped up by Indira to seek political gains in Punjab, but later became a Frankenstein who conspired with foreign intelligence agencies and carried out anti-india subversive activities, hid heavy ammunition in golden temple and other gurudwaras & unnecessarily created a crisis situation so as to push the state machinery into responding with hard force.
His men largely constituted by brainwashed criminal elements created mayhem across the state, killed innocent Punjabis and drove Punjab into dark days.
This said, what happened with Sikh massacre in Delhi and elsewhere after assassination of Indira is highly condemnable & unfortunately justice for it is still to be rendered.
But any intellectual - Sikh or otherwise - should not be so biased and hypocritical that he deliberately ignores the other side of picture which doesn't fit his narrative .
Simple cause-effect relationship must not be ignored.

Yash, Do you have any Proof..? Because the fact is that the word terrorist was first introduced by Indian nation-state for armed Sikh activists/natives of Desh Panjab in the early 1980s to create extreme adverse opinion against the Sikhs/Panjabis or we can say that to make a consent among the Indian society to further successfully instigate the Sikh Genocide (whenever needed). Here, If we talk about Sant Bhindrawale and his fellow Sikhs (the time period of 1978-1984), There is no record of them being arrested under any terrorist laws of Indian Constitution nor charged for any violent or criminal activity (RTI Proved). Moreover, You can read the perspective of Lt. Gen. Sinha. All this make it clear that the Indian ISIS (Army) went into Darbar Sahib not to eliminate a political figure, so-called terrorists or a political movement, but to suppress the culture of a people, to attack their heart, to strike a blow at their spirit and self-confidence.
Second, About Weapons, There is nothing wrong as they are mandatory for every Sikh to carry as per the Sikh doctrine of Miri-Piri blessed by sixth Sikh Guru Sahiban, Sahib Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji solidified this further during the creation of the Khalsa. One thing more, that need to understand here is that Sikhs treat weapons with the utmost respect. Even now, If you go to a Gurdwara you’ll find weapons laid out in front of Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. They do indeed have the ability to take someone’s life, but also to save a life as well. Thus the importance of weapons in the hands of the right people; Sikhs.
Third, about Sikh Genocide 1984, Genocide never happens at sudden, they are always organized (goo.gl/UQrFA6). Actually, Genocidal episodes have their roots in genocidal impulse that prevails in any society and takes aggressive form in certain conditions. History stands witness to the fact that the majority Indian society does posses such a genocidal impulse which turns active when they capture political power. So, We can say that 1984 Sikh Genocide was a direct outcome of genocidal impulse which had gripped the Indian psyche at that time. So, Stop absurdly vilifing the native people of Desh Panjab by ridiculously exercising the historical negationism and glorifying the heinous crimes of Human rights violations incited by the militarized Indian nation-state.
