I think you make too much of it. Sure String Theory bred a lot of crud, but that's always the case in science. The crud is a good thing, if not taken to extremes. No one knows ahead of time what the best models will be. It is a bit childish to expect a revolution every 40 years. The period 1905 - 1980 was extraordinary. I mean "extra ordinary", which is to say "not ordinary"! Don't fall prey to the Hossenfelder-Weinstein circle jerk of anti-establishmentarianism. There has to be an establishment for anyone to be anti-establishment. What matters is not what side of that artificial divide you fall upon, but your honesty and integrity regardless of where you have a role.
