Gojira's one of those bands that talks a lot about the environment, I think this song's about global warming where sea levels would rise and there'd be water all over and instead of birds or planes there would be whales "flying" all above us.

Mario, the drummer of the band, is widely appreciated amongst metal fans, as being one of the most incredible performers in the scene, and an absolute clockwork powerhouse drummer. He plays and creates with such an evident passion, that he has won over even metalheads who don't necessarily dig that particular subgenre of metal. He gets love from those that know...you know?

It's a concept album. I believe it's about the whales migrating to a new planet, finding a new home, a rebirth. Gojira have always talked/wrote about Environmental issues. Their new song "Amazonia" off their upcoming album is another good example of this.
This album is a classic. It really should be listened to by anyone with an interest in rock music to hear how heavy metal music evolved and transformed into sounds that could not have ever been thought of when Black Sabbath laid down those initial riffs, 35 plus years ago prior to this release.

The sound you are talking about is called the Gojira pick scrape you drag the pick across the strings from the high e string to the low e string so it makes the scraping sound.

Fellas. You gotta check out a good live version of this, maybe Hellfest 2013 or Brixton Academy. And also The Heaviest Matter of the Universe from one of those shows. You won't be disappointed, they fucking slay. And yes, their drummer gets mad recognition for being at the top of the pack.
Recording:
Don't know how they do it, but generally the main songwriter will demo the riffs/song structure with a drum machine or something and then the band will take it from there in rehearsals or the songs emerge "organically" while jamming out.
The lead guitarist/vocalist and drummer are brothers here, so I expect they work in tandem a bit more than most bands. Hope that gives a little insight.

My son went to an outdoor festival and it poured rain just at the beat drop in this song before the vocals kick in. Everyone was covered in mud and soaked to the skin but happy. lol
So many good Gojira songs. Big fan of their first album "Terra Incognita". More death metal style vocals but the music is amazing. Definitely recommend "Blow Me Away You (niverse)" from that album. Its got a great groove to it.
More Gojira por favor! Yall would really enjoy some earlier stuff like Space Time (please!) But The Way of All Flesh is their best album imo. You're gonna get alot of requests for The Art of Dying
