When I was 5. My dad, uncles & boy cousins all went on a weekend trip. I wanted to go so badly, but no girls were allowed 😡. They left. I went into the house crying. Turned on one of 3 channels. I was sitting cross-legged 5' from the TV. The next thing i know. BOOM! The whole living room, TV & myself turned purple. The TV started smoking. NO SMOKING ALLOWED IN OUR HOUSE! My mom picked me up & tossed me. Then she drug that floor model out the front door. I'm frozen, but no longer crying. My mom comes back in crying. Lightning struck our antenna then followed the wire into the house. Mom's huge purple plum tree was on that end of the porch. It went up in flames too. That was the first and last guys trip. I guess your plum tree took me back 45 years & I wrote a book 🤷♀️.

Your home place is absolutely beautiful. I’m so jealous. Here in really dry west Texas we’re limited to what fruit trees flourish here. My Dad told me when he installed his purple Marin house that if other birds move in before the martins, they won’t live there. They won’t cohabitate with other birds. I’ll be so happy for you to prove that theory wrong. Course could be just Texas martins are so snobby!!!!
It's true what your Dad said. Different species of Birds won't roost that close to one another.
No wonder Sasquatch likes living there. Lol. Free fruit of all sorts.

Purple Martin houses are a lot of work. They have to be so tall. Amd when you first put them up, you only open maybe 2 holes. After thosev2 have Martins in them. You climb up, keep a ladder handy, and open a few more holes.
If anything gets in the first 2 holes besides Martins. You climb up, clean them back out & close the holes for a few days. Then open them back up. And repeat.
Then in late fall. You take the Martin house down for winter & that's when you do the paint & repairs & cleaning. Next spring, you repeat everything again.
Martins are great if you have ponds or streams. They eat their weight everyday in mosquitoes & other pests. And Martins & swallows will come back to your place year after year, even their offspring for generations. So it gets somewhat easier to keep uneanted birds out.
Martins & swallows will not roost in close proximity to other species. And they love water too ❤ I love the swallow family of birds.
