You my friend were born 100 years too late. As was I and I am 72. You may jump from project to project, but you don't have someone running your life, ( except your Beautiful wife). You are able to change in a minute to the situation at hand. Keep up the good work. I love your videos. God Bless you and your beautiful family. I envy you.

What you've done over the past three years or so was perfect timing Shawn even though you didn't know what was to come. You've carved out a life for yourself and your family in a relatively short time. Be proud of your accomplishments Shawn. You've done in three years what most of us only dreamed of doing. We appreciate you sharing your experience, memories and lifestyle changes you've done. Stay Safe my Friend. See you at the cabin next week. 😊👍

James you have inspired me so much. It is a long way to be self-reliant. I am doing it all on my own. I worked in UK for ten years as Health Care Assistant when Brexit happened I decided to buy a small house on a mountain in Bulgaria. 3 years on I am growing my own, I have almost finished renovating my house. I work 2-3 months to support my family and then I am back to the place I love and I feel I belong to. Every video you post is an inspiration and thank you so much for sharing. There are many like-minded people like yourself who strive to become completely independent of the system and political situation.

Can’t wait to see your garden once completed. We been growing our own food for 10 years. My husband is a hunter as well so we have plenty of organic meat in our freezer and of course a freezer full of Newfoundland berries. Now only if we could quit our jobs . Or stop working for the big man. We cherish our weekends off. Getting closer to be more self reliant. You are truly a man of great wisdom Shawn. Good health to you and your family. This pandemic has really shown how vulnerable we all are. Not only physically from viruses but as a society. It has been so quiet down here in the city since the lock down and for me that has been amazing. Our world needed this pause, and it is showing us that we don't truly need all the "stuff" that we have been lead to believe was necessary to be successful. (what ever that actually is) I've been wanting to go off-grid and live a more self reliant life for a while now and this whole situation has really brought it to the top of the priority list.

Carolyn Costain . You have a very romanticised and false idea of the past. No, people were not better then and life was much harder and harsher. The people of the past were just as selfish and greedy. This pandemic shows the vast majority of people are cooperating and playing their part and the conditions we are having to put up with are easy and luxurious compared with the epidemics of the past. Learn some real history - what you think you know about the past is mere fantasy.

Its horrid and numbers of the dead are rising every day, so if people here were doing the right thing then the numbers would drop not be rising at the rate they are right now. People of the past did have it harder then we do but most were God fearing people that did help each other from the stories my great grandmother told but that was her life in Finland not here in the US. Hi...this isn't directed at you...got some ramblings as i cope with the current "shut-in" situation. I agree with u...certainly...a life that we were more designed to do/be. But I'm gonna take it a step further back...what u r describing is what native americans did and they had a rich spiritual life with a much deeper respect for mother earth and father sky....then "white man" came and peace, love, and harmony with land ownership, divisions. lines drawn...it all EQUALS EXCLUSION...the elite created this mess for hundreds of years in the past...and the suffering is going to stop...the enslavement....we have entered The Age of Aquarius in 2012...peace, love, and joy, and the walls are coming down...we all need organic food with high vibe energy....and pure water....shelter/clothing...and love. Meanwhile, the majority of native americans are the poorest of the poor...almost wiped out completely by influenza, purposefully starved as the buffalo were slaughtered...forced to go to brainwashing/cult school, and murdered....this dark energy is harmful to everyone...because we are all one. I want to reincarnate back to Earth when it's energies are shifted back to peace. love, joy, and harmony. I wish the native americans had guns instead of arrows...so when they were met with the dark destructive aggressive beings...they had the upper hand because they knew the "lay of the land". I do not advocate for violence in words, tone, any actions...but what i do know is that i would of preferred to be in their culture...FREE...so i didn't have to suffer, go to "dumb-down" school...get abused, becoming a "robot"...programmed to be a certain "cookie cutter" human doing ? for ?...I feel blessed that the veil has been lifted years ago. Native Americans are naturally gentle people...I'm white but think I was native in at least one previous life...i'm glad i questioned the put-downs about them growing up by the system/matrix...I'm glad i reached out to them and found TRUTH. WE all need to heal and any hurt we do to others...we do to ourselves...i was raised Catholic but i left it behind because they wouldn't let me be a priest...because i'm female...i was 17...i'm so glad for that...because it opened my eyes to the world of judgment, unfairness, limits, enslavement, control, abuse..and here we all are. The meek will inherit the earth....let the light in....meditation freed me...and no one can take mt spirituality away from me. My soul longs for compassion...so i get it out freely to all of those who feel alone...you are not alone...angels are everywhere....Peace is on it's way.

@Bobby Brady Thank you. You hit the nail on the head. Yes My great grandmother and grandmother told me of when they were young late 1800s an up until the 50s, neighbors would help neighbors, they would take care of each others kids without charge and barter for things they were out of "some flour for a little sugar" Even through the depression there were many good people that would get extra bread in the food lines and share with neighbors that had more kids. My grandmother was always giving away fresh eggs from her chicken coops to neighbors in need and other neighbors would bake apple pies and drop them at her door. " I heard many stories of my family going back to fighting in the revolutionary war on horseback and how hard it was for the women, when the husbands were gone "sometimes they were gone a few years at a time' but out of all the stories I heard and right up until I was a kid in the 60s I remember neighbors always helped neighbors without question, through any kind of struggle or illness. We didn't have much but my mom was always giving a free room to someone in need and cared for them. I taught my two boys to do the same for people and they are wonderful young men today for it. But there is a hole generation of people today that just don't seem to care or know how to follow rules and instead of helping someone laying on the ground? They rob them instead! It's a very sad world we live in today. I do think this country "the US" will end up in a total lock down because of the selfish people out there that refuse to wear a mask and that just don't care about saving someone else's life. They rather believe this pandemic is a Gov. Hoax and the death toll is on the rise horridly.

Being blessed with good health is a fundamental requisite to self-reliance. We tend to take our health for granted, but even as a fit, healthy-living person we can face unexpected and sudden health challenges that suddenly take away our independence. It is a tough and humbling thing to deal with, especially when one is accustomed to being “self-reliant”. Anyway - it’s a struggle I am dealing with to some extent, and has made me hyper-aware of the privilege and blessing of good health. Thanks for the fantastic videos, Shawn...and...Good Health!! 😊

I’ve adapted successfully to so many new situations in my life. This, however, is getting to me now. The last few weeks I’ve taken in stride, focused on some house projects, but this week has been hard. Not knowing what’s going to happen, when it’s going to end, when I can get working again, or even socializing again... it’s getting me down. The most ridiculous part of this is not being able to go camping, hiking or even go up to my friends trailer. Yet daily, people in cities are allowed to be packed into line-ups and grocery stores? Really ridiculous rules imo. Thankful for your videos, a little window into a world I miss so much!

Exactly ... and if nothing else while your stuck, do some of those little maintenance things that always seems hard to find the time for. I'm working on garden prep right now, and just started my seeds a week or two ago, so I am at a standstill watching for the seedlings to pop up. I'm trying to use that dead period to get on some other small projects ... very minor stuff, but it all needs to get done. Hope we can all get back to "normal" soon. I'm lucky in that I only have to take care of myself, so I'm really not missing a beat in my situation. The only thing I find stressful is having to negotiate the crowds at the stores. I'm one of those people with a list, that knows what they want ... where it is in the store ... get what I need and get out as soon as possible ... I'm not a "shopper" in any sense of the word. Take care everyone ... stay safe.

But it gives me to think that it would happen with the nature we see, if many decided to cut tree trunks that take more than 20 years to grow and 20 minutes to cut. I've given many families eggs through this. We got 8 in of snow a few days ago, that's put a damper on the garden work.
Thank you for always being caring, not only for your family, but us. As you learn, we learn, but, I got to be honest, I was pretty lost on your other video, trying to figure out what you were doing. I get the raised bed, but wondered about some of it. I know you have a plan, in the end, it'll come together for us. :)

The jobs you had layed the foundation of bigger things to happen in your life. Your planning to live a self reliant life was a smart wise move. Many of us wait in our homes for someone to direct our next next move. Your videos are awesome and inspiring especially during these difficult times. Keep up the good teachings. Blessings.

    Nice.
All of this just brings home how dependent on the systems and technologies of modern society most of us have become.
It has all been about money, the economy, growth and getting as much of everything as we can, a lot of the time on credit.
The times we are going through now may have exposed how fragile the system really is, how much bs the Govt. and big business have been feeding us and how important it really is to take some responsibility for your own wellbeing.
Great video mate, thank you very much and it is somehow very relaxing watching you.

Words to live by... Fact of the matter is most people don't have the self drive to be reliant on themselves. And when you look at it why would they society has made it easy. Life should be hard to force people to be greatful for the simpler things. I know personally that when I take the time to do a job with hand tools for example it takes longer but I always enjoy it more.... I get where your coming from. Thanks for posting.

Thank you for another serene video. Here in the UK we have had our quarantine extended for 3 weeks and I wouldnt be surprised if it went on for longer. I try and be productive and I am doing outside jobs as is my 81 year old mother on her third of an acre. We aim to be self sufficient where veg are concerned. On wet days, I work in the house. I catch up with work colleagues on Zoom for virtual pub quizzes, its a way to have fun and helps with the isolation.

We try to dictate how our life will go but we forget we are not the only ones with a plan and sometimes your plans just can’t happen, so you have backup plans. I have found it’s easier for me to have multiple projects going so I don’t get bored and if what I need isn’t yet available, I have flexibility to work on something else. These times are scary. I don’t have faith in our government. That’s a sad statement. Keep up the great work!

Some things we have noticed, is that people are beginning to develop different priorities in their lives. Some of the things that have happened in our suburban neighborhood have been nice things. The pace of life has slowed down. People I have never seen before take walks with their dogs and children. When we go outside we don't hear traffic from the highway up on the hill. We hear our neighbors doing projects out in their yards and children playing. My asthma has never been better. At night I have been able to see the stars and it is completely silent. We are lucky too. We have a big yard with lots of trees; douglas firs, hemlock, pine and cedar, lots of ferns and Oregon grape. We are new owners of a bee hive which is doing well in the back yard and today we are creating a raised garden in an unused sunny portion of our driveway. I think there are lessons to be learned about how to live ones life. My grown children are able to do their jobs from home. Bluetooth, and AMazon office jobs and they and their coworkers are discovering they can do just as good a job, if not better, from home. Maybe, along with all the sorrow and horror of this virus, there will be some good lessons learned about how our civilizations works and we priortize our own lives.

Shawn, many people have a mind set of "bad things just can't happen to me, don't give me any stuff about bad times happening". Then when it does they panic, due to their STINKING THINKING. Some folks learn and do what you did. Others make some preparation and hope for the best, like me. As always, this to shall pass. What happens in the mean time, to each of us, depends almost solely upon not having STINKING THINKING. Thanks for being a rock for the rest of us to cling to, so to speak, during this storm ;-)

Shawn, I never honestly knew what I wanted to be when I grew up; and as a result, had multiple jobs and a few longer term "careers". I took a lot of university training and at one point, realized that everything I had done and learned was what I call "cross-training for the rest of my life." Nothing learned ever goes to waste, and as I work on my own little homestead now, I find I call on skills and knowledge I gained through all those twists and turns on the way to being effective. Survival of the fittest truly does mean, more often than not, being able to t hink fast on your feet and "improvise, adapt. overcome."
