This woodworking project comes from my book, Make Your Own Kitchen Tools. It's a very simple project that can be made very quickly which is great for batching out and making a ton. I always encourage to take my projects and sell them online or at craft shows. Get the book here: bit.ly/2kbuROa

Love it! Great project, cheap, useful, and looks like it is a good use for offcuts and scrap
Love those trivets. Thanks for sharing.
Good job👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻💪🏻
"A, always. B, be. C, clamping. Always be clamping! ALWAYS BE CLAMPING!"
Great video for a great looking project. Quick question: do you glue the tile in somehow, or does it just sit?
Also, I want to have whiskey with Grampa Picciuto.
I am pretty sure you leave the tile loose. It makes it easier to clean the tile, or replace. And in the case that you might NOT have a $1 tile (something very special, heirloom, etc) maybe the wooden portion will need replaced before...
Hope that helps
Very cool video 👍well done
My local K-Mart was also a Sears, and my table saw is a Craftsman from about 20 years ago. It's not totally inconceivable that I have a contractor saw from K-Mart,
I like your information on the different projects. I see your gaining weight, be careful, as I don’t want you to get unhealthy like I did. I enjoy your tips on this trivet.
I had the same feeling about my router also. Your not alone David. But as I kept using it Ive gotten used to it. I use my micro jig. But like any other power tool you just have to be careful, and not take any short cuts and don’t get to confy other wise that’s when you loosing fingers , hands, eyes etc..
6. There's no catchy hook starting with "ROUUUTE.."
*Edit:* If you were Britski you could use Sepultra's "Roooooots, bloody roooooooots!"
There's naught wrong wit liking whiskey.
I miss K-mart.....
8 year Kmart veteran here!
This is the type of Make Something Video that I’m used to. David’s sarcasm and snarky comments. Love it. Keep up the good work.
These are the safety rants of someone who recently had his first kickback - and I am HERE for it. Stay safe, keep being awesome!
One of those products that I always need, but I never buy and haven't taken the time to make. Thanks for making one for me! 🙃
Your a lucky guy to have a grandpa with such skills i hope he sticks around for a long time to come. Thank you for sharing.
"Now I like a little bit of whiskey... in my mouth."
Truth.
That router rant. It was the best.
hehehehe!
I wish I could buy the plans for this project without having to buy the whole book. Is the book digital as well as physical?
Another great video. I have to say that your color grading/editing is fantastic! It's the sort of thing that viewers may not always think of but it shows in the final output.
Made several 40+ years ago and they are still going strong. Used the router for a dado for the tile and also to profile the edge. This is a great starter project as they can be made with a minimum of tools.
12° C or F, Dave? It's 37°C or 98.6°F here today... I'm melting and dying. 😕
Fantastic work, Dave! I've never seen something like that! Loved it! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I’ve been watching since the beginning and the evolution of your shop is really inspiring. I think you’ve finally nailed it and the place shows great on camera while screaming “you” all over it. It’s unique, it’s creative and it’s fun, and you made it happen. Awesome to see.
Wood Magazine issue 146 from 2002 had a similar project. These work very well in the kit.
Just got my trivet in the mail today and it looks and smells great thanks David
Oh man! That's awesome! THANK YOU!!
Just out of curiosity what is your stance on routers? 😂
Love this project! But... sorry... can't help it... I'm waiting for you to use the router again. :D Hilarious!
Hey David! I've been a fan of the Making It podcast for awhile now and I rediscovered your channel from that. I've definitely grown to love the channel, in particular your music
Thank you Casey! Appreciate you listening and watching!
Oh damn!!!! I GOT AN IDEA, that item, if you size it up more you can make a raised topper for a table top game, like pathfinder, d&d and more, for the DMs that like to put scater terrain down in stead of maps, what a useful item, even more if you take it to a place you haven't seen it before
Hey, David. These trivets look great. I love your books and I know that I would love Grandpa Picciuto. Thanks for the video.
This style of trivets have been on my project list for a while now. They look great. The t-shirt design is amazing also
Dave I havent been around in a while i guess but the show looks awesome. Love the new colors and the mural wall is beautiful. Also I had no idea what a trivet was but this was awesome.
Steve Ramsey would surely enjoy this video because of the liberal use of the grippper, but Tamar would most definitely dislike this video because her favorite tool is the router.
I don't dislike routers but they are intimidating for sure. I wouldn't be comfortable doing that cut for the legs. Even with the push pads because the pieces are rather small. I would probably clamp them on a jig to have more control.
This was definitely one of my dad's favorite projects from when I got the book for him - I don't think he's made it yet, but he's sure talked about making it a lot! I hate the router's smell too haha!
woodworkers: hey tile industry fix your measuring nonsense!!
tile industry: what size is a 2 x 4 again??
woodworkers: a long time ago in a woodworking universe far away *rambling story*
Overall General Rudeness...I'm dyin' over here!!! pushing through the hatred..LOL you're killin me smalls
Photo galleries were the worst, especially before they were standardized in public libraries and frameworks. I still remember trying to get those to work in my php days. Gives me chills.
I'm not sure if that was a joke about liking whiskey but.....did you actually use whiskey as a wood finish?! If so I'm on board.
Since you are outspoken advocate on routers… what bit are you using and how do you prevent tear out on the right side… I’ve scrapped so much material I got beavers squatting in my yard.. trying to do this with red or white oak… or did I just answer my own question… awesome video btw…
On the router finger damage bit. In middle school shop class I was running a piece over the router when another kid bumped into me. Ring finger went right into it. Took off a good chunk of the pad and a little bone too.
I've cut my finger tips like a gunsight on a table saw... it is like a series of small hammers hitting you.
I mangled the tip of my index finger on the routing table. Wood slipped -finger dipped =Guitar playing days over
Hi, could you please tell the brand of your yellow tool that you use to hold the wood when using table saw and router. Thanks.
*Might be easier to cut the 45 on a Chop Saw.*
so youre telling me whiskey and woodworking will give you a long life....cant disagree with that.
That 👕 design would make a mighty find sticker... Just saying! 💰👊
Are you watching Glengary Glen Ross in the background? Good movie.
I reckon if you put up some of Grandpa Picciuto's hand made crosses on your site they'd be sold out in no time!
That's very unique and very creative idea David. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep making. God bless.
Great film and project. #justsaynotorouters. : ) Mahalo for sharing! : )
what's a K-mart? kidding... I'm old enough to remember. :(
These are the new leads. These are the Glengarry leads. And to you they're gold, and you don't get them.
I like it! Keeping it simple is attractive for me! Thanks for this project. Lin H.
PUT THE COFFEE DOWN. Coffee's for closers
Exactly!
Solid work, beat me to it. I have to restart the video now because I was watching the movie and squinting to see if that was what I thought it was. GGGR.
I know this was filmed 2 years ago but Kmarts haven’t been around for a good while !!! Hahaha
I don't remember what I said about Kmart in the video but I worked at one for 8 years!
This is the coolest functional project I’ve seen in a long time! I love it! Thank you for sharing!
Is is true that you don't notice right away if you injure your fingers at the router?
*How did you make the 2 little feet?*
The kickback vid made me cringe! I hope you're ok, be safe!
Your shop is starting to look pretty awesome compared to a few years ago. The led/neon signs look good, you got some nice colors going on, some fun touches and patterns on the work benches and that other wall. I also like the carpet . So much warmer and better on the knees.
A little bit of whisky in your coffee turns to a little bit of whisky in your mouth.
Best video in a a while! Feels like you’ve got your groove back. Nice work!
I bought your book last year and made trivets and the utensil holders for Christmas gifts. They were a hit, thank you!
3:30 hahahahahahahahahahaha
No but seriously hahahahahahahaha
Getting cut on the table saw is no joke cut 4 fingers in a split second
As someone who has caught their finger on a router, you know immediately but there is a 10 minute period of disbelief and giving out to yourself asking how could you be so stupid. Then you make haste to A&E.
Indeed!
Hahahaha i cackled wildly at the opening joke. Very good
Oh David, you right about so many things, but dead wrong about one of them. When the router chews up your fingers there's no delay in knowing it happened. For one, your fingers make a completely different noise going through the bit than wood does.
hahaha! I suppose you're right!
You really thinking old school talking about k mart 😂
So biggest question - where is there a K-Mart in 2022?
Your shop is so colorful and looks like it would be a blast to work in. Well done sir. I love it. Cheers.
Fun fact: Back when I worked at the newspaper, my boss always started every movie question with "I know you haven't seen it, but have you seen _________?" The first and only one that went "I know you haven't seen it, but you NEED to see _______." was Glengarry Glen Ross.
Instructions unclear, always be cross-cutting?
DP:"your a maker, at least that's why I hope your watching" .
Me: nope, I live vicariously through your making while I sit on my couch eating Doritos. Thanks!
Doritos are great!
I don't like my router anymore either, after it decided to take a chunk out of my thumb and leave me a nice hole where I could see bone. Thankfully I didn't lose my thumb but recovery has been tough.
yikes!
How did you size the frame in the first place?
Simple build, yet elegant looking. Looks great David!
You've got the coolest shop David......and those trivets rock!
Where did you get 6” tiles with patterns? Every tile place I’ve checked only has design tile in 8”.
Lowes and Home Depot. Links to the exact tiles in the description.
Watched this video yesterday, ordered the book from Amazon, supposed to be here today. Stopped by Lowes this morning and picked up a few tiles. Gonna give it a try this weekend. Thanks David! :)
Heck yeah! That's awesome. Thanks Lawrence!
I started to come to your videos for music! Your talent is dope! Not bad trivets :)
I wish you would have put the kick back accident in the video. It would have been a good learning portion of the video.
Kick back happened later that night on another project.
What router bit did you use to make the “legs”?
Awesome project!
Any reason you didn't glue the tile in?
as you were doing your SquareSpace commercial, I picked up my phone and looked at UA-cam Shorts, and guess what came up? YOU! doing "The Easiest way to cut tapers"..............holy bonkers. Don't worry, I clicked the thumbs up.
Is this your design? Can I make them to sell
Today was the day I learned they were called trivets.
Great project and entertaining video. Keep them coming!
Too early for Alec Baldwin jokes?
What is the benefit for not gluing down the tile? Risk of it falling off when moving around
It breaking and not be replaceable. Also washable
Can't you trim the tiles on your router table?!
The router hatred explanation 😅😅😅😆😅😆
for the last time, my name is not "whiskey"
...and anyone on headphones now also hates routers.
Why don't you wear safety glasses?
Put. The. Coffee. DOWN! Great tips and entertainment. Crack me up while I learn. You're just flat out funny. You're the man.
My initial thought was "Did Jackson Galaxy start woodworking?".
You look quite a bit like him. :)
Lol David, a contractor saw from Kmart. That just cracked me up dude. Thanks for the laugh, as well as another great video.
Tell the truth; router stole your best gal in High School, didn’t he?
yep
