    So we learn that a Unimog handicapped by poor tyres, excessive pressures and a very mild driving style still seems to achieve everything thrown at it.

      @Pinzpilot101 Рік тому +1

      I agree with you....this video was obviously made to 'up' the Canter, In truth had you put some real tyres on either of them the results would have been entirely different. Michelin XM47s on a Unimog absolutely transform its capabilities, I'm sure they would do the same to the Canter, but the Unimog would still come out on top. I have owned a U1300L for some 13 or so years and it came to me with brand new Michelin XZL (the ones beloved of the military and overlanders - a farmer wouldn't even consider them). They were OK on Salisbury plain in UK (tank training area) and it would go where a challenger tank would go.......But then I moved to Eastern Poland, where the soil is a poor mix of sand and clay and those tyres just sat and spun.....I changed to a set of new Michelin Loader tyres, good deep chevrons (not really rated for speed - but happy at 45 MPH) and the transformation was unbelievable. They are still good after 10 years in Poland and sit in the barn waiting to be used or sold on.....(I recently went up a couple of sizes to 14.00 Mitas semi chevrons which are equally as good but with the extra ground clearance).

    I have owned both vehicles in full motorhome format and whilst the Canter which I currently is absolutely plenty capable for most situations the 1300 Unimog would run rings around it! As stated by several viewers tyre choice on the Unimog is very poor. The only reason I changed over to the Canter was changing tyres and maintenance on my own was getting too heavy for someone in their late 60,s. We travelled around 115,000 klm in the Mog and so far around 50,000 in the Canter

      I agree. I own a Mog (U1700L) with a removable camper on the back. Its a weapon and providing I dont encounter bottomless mud or narrow tracks that wind between trees, its unbeatable EVERYWHERE (maybe not so much on the road)... I'm now 55 but I figure I'm keeping the Mog for many more years to come.

      Hi Robert , how do they compare as far as top speed goes , fuel consumption , maintenance cost , 2nd hand cost .? I do like Unimog's but the Canter did very well seeing its diffs are much closer to the ground . which can take a bigger home on the back or which one is easier to set up as a Earth truck ? I see the military auctions are coming up or is there a better place to look for a truck ? Thanks

    Great video guys.. thank you. I read all the comments and differences in driver experience plus tyres and mods on the canter are all valid. An important point that hasn't been covered so far:
    The Unimog is designed from the outset as an off road vehicle with some on road capabilities. The Canter is designed as an on road vehicle with some off road capabilities. Both great trucks.
    Lots of unimog owners modify their vehicle for better on road capabilities, while Canter owners modify their trucks for better off road capabilities.
    Ultimately as long as your happy with what your truck does, who cares what anyone else thinks. For off road capabilities and load carrying.. there's no argument..the unimog design is by far the better vehicle.
    Ive never seen a Canter used extensively for off road use by any military around the world. I've also never seen a Canter entered into European truck trials or rallys.

      Your Canter was modified with partially deflated off-road tires and clearly setup for that weight and driven by someone who had some idea of how to drive (you?).
      The Unimog was bog stock with road pressure road tires. The person driving it (no offence intended) clearly has not driven off-road much.
      The much harder thing to adjust for is the different weight class's. Payload difference of 1T vs 5.5T. But even with all the inequalities, it still managed to do OK.

Another funny thing is that maybe with the price of a new unprepared Unimog you could buy 2 or 3 serial new prepared Canters 4x4 like the ones on the video (e.g. AUD +- 225K Unimog vs 75K AAV4x4 Canter )!! Are they comparable? No, the Unimog in a Serial Enginered Heavy Duty Vehicle, so is Heavy duty / Off road from conception, the Canter is Serial Consumer / Construction 4x4 Vehiche that can be acessorized to for Heavier Off road ... the Unimog is a professional vehicle, the Canter is Leasure Vehicle, even if both Offroad.

    Видео Хорошее!!! Но машины разные- колеса, моторы, даже подвеска разная. Мерину как то больше доверяю! У самого 609 есть. Машина вечная , только следить нужно. Мне конструкция мостов в unimog понравилась, даже не видел такой.

    Not a fair comparison, the unimogs tyres are almost road only tyres, not 4x4 tyres. And they where very worn, not alot of tread left.

    Hey 4wtrucking Aus, check out 13:19 it looks like the two rails under the box are about to separate from the box because of lateral racking. The C channels are trying to lay down as the weight of the box pushes side to side, can see them separating from the box floor structure in a way that doesn't look good 😳

    I just sold my unimog, it was great fun and I was sad to see it go, but honestly the biggest reason I sold it is that it was soo rough, as in you have to go 1/4 the speed of everyone else on the trails and dirt roads and even then it literally jolts and shakes everything about so violently that its honestly just useless. I found I actually never wanted to go out camping and 4x4ing anymore due to the effort of just taking it somewhere was so laborious. I cannot describe how rough it is when it comes to literally any small bump in the road, regardless of pressures - they are just a rough truck.
    Also going anywhere, some of my favourite places around where I live that are generally within 2-2.5 hours to get there, became 5 hours to get there. And that time is not because of me babying it on the highway, I'd sit it around 90-95km/h basically flat chat all day. It's the time wasted doing 7-10km/h on the dirt roads when all the other 4x4's around are doing 40km/h and just soaking up the bumps with ease, meanwhile my entire setup was just getting shaken apart. The actual reality is, if you genuinely have 500,000-750,000 dollars to INVEST in one (preferably a new one) and do all the upgrades required and put the proper fibreglass/ss (not ali/timber) camper on the back, then I am sure it would've been great (but still think significantly slower off road), but we talking the proice of a house there.

    Great vid and see the differences of the 2 trucks. Im surprised that the Unimog needed so much brake use; I wouldve thought the low range gearing would be so super low that walking would be faster. Also, was there a reason he didnt air down?

    • @4wtruckingaus654
      @4wtruckingaus654  2 роки тому +5

      He did air down a fair bit but for what he said the walls are very thick on them tyres and bearly bag out, he reckons he will upgrade to grippier 46s soon

    • @gregsheridan
      @gregsheridan 2 роки тому +5

      Those wheels are also not good at retaining tire beads at low pressure. Highway tires are not meant for airing down.

    • @TheRaptor1967
      @TheRaptor1967 2 роки тому +1

      He couldn't have aired down much. Yes, they need to loose a lot of pressure to bag, but mine come with the same ties and they DID bag when I let them down on the beach. Just dont try corner fast!
      But let your mate know that the BIGGEST improvement to his truck will be Tires. 46" is a good size for a Mog. Next biggest thing will be get some experience and confidence behind the wheel and learn to commit to lines when taking them. Only experience will help there.

    • @TheRaptor1967
      @TheRaptor1967 2 роки тому +3

      He didn't need to braking as much as he did. The gears are low enough to do the job. The extra breaking was just inexperience (IMHO).

    dafür, dass der Unimog einen schlechten Fahrer und die falschen Räder drauf hat, kommt er erstaunlich weit...
    Ich fahre seit 1995 Unimog und dieses Gelände ist bestimmt keine Herausforderung...
    Da ist der Canter viel besser vorbereitet, richtige Reifen mit dem entsprechenden Luftdruck und der Kerl kennt sein Fahrzeug...
    Trotzdem cooles Video.
