As someone who had drooled over Scorpio when it was first introduced, I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation. Hats off to Hormazd Sorabjee and his co-presenter for the kind of knowledge they possess on the Indian automotive landscape.
I did my summer project with Hindustan Motors in Calcutta way back in 1994 when was studying in a business school..those days Tata was coming with the Sumo and Mahindras were coming up with the Armada..the feeling at HM was why invest in new product development when there existing products were selling well ..they were just sleeping when their loyal dealers were leaving.. Look where HM is today
Great podcast loved it. When i was 8 years old a rich family in my neighborhood bought a scorpio i am from a middle class family we were planning to buy a motorcycle at that time but when I saw the scorpio it became my dream car scorpio was a dream car for an average indian family at that time it had something special in it which can not be expressed in words it's design was like nothing else.
Instead of launching cars back to back, what M&M should focus on is to train dealerships on how to behave with customers and establish a healthy long term relationship. Sorry to say but these days, most M&M showrooms are full of goons who only agree to deliver cars when you're ready buy forced accessories worth 1L or more. They just want to milk profit as much as possible for as long as they can. The sad part is that the company is aware of such tactics yet they decided to turn a blind eye and let public suffer.
Agree to this point... And you will never get mx1 variants to buy ? It's only on the pricelist and brochures to show how attractive the price range starts.
Not to forget Scorpio was 1st to have hidden door hinges from Mahindra, 1st car to have factory fitted music system to have USB and memory card player across industry
Mahindra is a great example of a company that can learn from it's mistakes and make a come back. They entered the South African market with a technically inferior product. The review I read was scathing. Today the Pik-Up is a favourite with farmers and tradesmen. Great build and great paint job and very reliable I hear. Common to find second hand versions are being sold with 300 0000 km on the clock. Other models are common on the road too. Their assembly facility here is being expanded to 14 000 sq meters. Great job.
I happened to drive a Scorpio for the first time in 2023 and I was hooked. Have had 2 BMW cars and still own a 320d, but honestly the Scorpio I feel was just made for Indian driving conditions. Circa 2024 got the Thar 3D AT petrol and…..am loving it. Superb power, superb road presence…. Brilliant! Just glued to this professional & so comprehensive podcast ❤❤👍
As someone who loves automobiles, This podcast is amazing. He is sharing how Indian automobile industry evolved last ~50 years and more importantly after 1991 open economy. Wisely spend time on UA-cam to watch quality content. Thanks Sir!
As someone who worked at mahindra for 10 years, I can tell you that Dr Pawan Goenka single handedly took some calls in 1990s, like building their own engine against contracting built some very good R&D pedigree. Velusamy, Mahesh Babu, Rajiv Modi, Dhabar, Gill and many. other Indian engineers were transformed into geniuses over a decade with Dr. Goenka. Which President had the balls to ask their board for Rs. 2500 Cr R&D centre called MRV in 2007? That man changed everything about Indian automobile industry without realising it.

The thing is that I don't think there is any car manufacturer that has shifted its focus from tractor to CV's successfully and Scorpio is one such testament through people's reactions and sales. Mahindra has beaten all odds and today, when I look at Scorpio N in a new avatar, I am absolutely amazed.
My close friend still has a Logan Diesel. I feel the car was way ahead of its time when it was launched. It was and still one of the most spacious sedans you could get, had a stellar k9k diesel engine. One of the few sedans where three people could sit comfortably in the rear seat, also had a humongous boot. As usual, stellar podcast, very technical discussions done. The plus point of Mahindra is they use their own engines.
great topics that are being discussed. PLease make more of two wheeler manufacturer podcast .Specially TVS they are not that vocal like bajaj or royal enfield but they are very successfull and deserve a podcast
This is the BEST & BESTEST podcast you have given us since you started this a few months ago. Phenomenal level of information that we could have ever known. Falling in love with Cars & their information is one thing but becoming big fans of you two guys is another thing to remember . Pls do bring in more such information. Infact this podcast has been multifaceted - on cars and on prospects on INVESTMENT in the company too. Thanks again Lords!!!
absolute pleasurable podcast, i had to listen to it in several sittings...nice to learn about M&M's journey...after so many flop models they could get a right product... nice that they listen to mkt, give what customers want and are agile and nimble...hope they address some of the design flaws in Roxx...
it was a little long but i listend to it completely all what you can do is play this and do your other task so that you are listening it to it as well I liked the quote that Mr Sorabjee said " you cannot get in a JV when you are not the product developer" the learning mahindra made with Renault.
next time cover the history of Hyundai in INDIA , that would be even interesting. This podcast is very informative and good to know about Anand Mahindra
Some of us know about Voyager sir, it was mahindras 1st mpv, also 1st passenger vehicle that time to have complete flat bed convertible configuration option with the stock seats
Thoroughly enjoyed the podcast. It's like a small history session of M&M. All the insider stories, twists and turns , learnings and burnings of the brand are worth making a movie. But nonetheless it was a very pleasant experience listening to all of these as an auto enthusiast and also learnt management, decision making, product planning lessons from these discussions. Looking forward for more such content from Autocar India.
Felt really pleased to experience such interesting discussion around Mahindra & Mahindra 👍👍👍 Thanks @autocar team for bringing such amazing podcasts among us.
When all other companies were working on new models Mahindra choose to invest heavily on engines. Only company who wasn't dependent on Fiat engines as far as diesel goes. Petrol they developed after taking over Sangyung . I took a test drive Scorpio 130 PS of old Scorpio and Mstalion 3 cylinder of 3XO and i can one of most silent power train in their respective categories . They can bet on any model which such wide range of power trains
Thank you for this nice pod cast. You guys are phenominal in terms of historical and factual knowledge and the analysis is deep and accurate. Let us hope your predictions are just as reliable.😊
The Logan is still a very fine, spacious, car and precursor to Toyota's Etios. Everytime I ride in a Logan from Uber I find the sense of space very comforting. Where Renault went wrong was to persist with an outdated design from Romania...a Western flaw in thinking that an "older design from the West would do for India". M&M could have made more of the rights to the architecture and worked on it to make it its version of Etios. The Verito was in many ways an unfinished job with inconsistent support. Both companies, individually, I think had quite a gem on their hands - barring its relative obsolescence in aesthetics, design, engine, etc. Even to this day, the space inside this car - at its price at the time - had only one competition: Toyota's Etios. And none today, really, in that segment.
@autocar_india I was eagerly waiting for you to discuss the acquisition of Pininfarina. It wasn't even mentioned nor was the TUV3OO. Pininfarina's Batista has a great battery pack and it could be of use to Mahindra. Although the TUV3OO failed, it had design inputs from Pininfarina. Since then, the quality of interiors have improved, but it still has a long way to go.
I think Mahindra will go back to making MPV because that is where the rural India and taxi for mass transportation lies. But this time all the cumulative technical expertise gathered, the more modern design team that exists now will pull it off. Go for it Mahindra.
Very good discussion. Got lots of insight. Great story of Mahindra, time to buy M&M stocks😊. One question, you mentioned many a time about Honda Ride & Handling….. Had they done justice with it in Honda Elevate? How will you rate Elevate against the rivals for a driving enthusiast?
Tata can be quicker enough to adopt hybrid. Since they have 1.2ltr turbo and non turbo variant and it can be easy to bundle it with their technology of EV. Would love to look at it.
why mahindra is not updating bolero classic from past four years they have updated thar in 2020 and they have also updated XUV 500 in 2021 i.e XUV 700 and they have also updated XUV 300 in 2023-2024 and they have also updated the new 5 door thar in 15th of August , mahindra has changed all of their car except bolero classic it's a dream of every middle class family and it's a high comfortable car for rural people please make a update in bolero classic we are waiting for this since past 6 years I am not able to understand what's the problem in updating bolero classic
Bolero is mostly sold in rural areas and as a commercial vehicle so Mahindra doesn't need to upgrade it often. Plus Mahindra's portfolio is huge nowadays so they're busy building their most profitable and most selling cars.
They are updating it. You would have found out had you listened to the full podcast. It's apparently getting monocoque chasis. They'll continue selling the classic bolero alongside probably
Mahindra's working on the next gen bolero dubbed as U171. Rumours are that this new platform could spawn upto 6 different SUVs/Pickups by 2030, starting with the all new Bolero.
A great fan of your show, You talked about the diesel engiine being world class.. Why are you not talking about the petrol engine of Thar Roxx? A first time buyer like me of Mahindra product.. I have doubts about the electricals of Mahindra.. I have been told by Mahindra users that it is acar for 5 yers after that people either sell it or repent...
Fell in love with Scorpio when I was earning 26k per month….. today ima proud owner of SCORPIO 😊…. I could’ve become a Scorpio owner earlier may be 3-4 years ago but I didn’t like the interiors. The moment Scorpio N was launched I knew ITS FOR ME !!!!!!! That’s my SCORPIO story. 😊
I think Mahindra should provide more features at their entry level cars for instance in their basic car it does not have even an cruise control which although is not a great feature, but people if comparing with other cars it might lag behind, and it does not provide alloy wheels rather than wheel caps, Indian consumer these days are ready to shell out money but they want an excellent product, I think they should think on this side as well
Very interesting point. Mahindra learnt a lot from JVs. Ford, Renault, Nissan,Sanyong, Navistar. The quality change shows in their lineup .. imagine Armada,Commander and now Xuv700 and Scorpio N. Safari owner. Still love the Scorpio.
Why did TATA get out of this segment by discontinuing SUMO is mind boggling. Scorpio benefitted a lot because of this
True but sumo was kind of slippery it had a wild gossip about it of car flipping with sudden break .
Tata vehicles are very unreliable unlike Mahindra

I completely agree about your findings on 3XO. Wanted to book one but the booking period was 3 months . Booked another car and got it within 10 days.
Sir superb explanation.
I used to see Paul's pitstop UA-cam channel.
Your explanation about Mahindra Scorpio is excellent.

Please do a podcast on how companies do outsourcing of parts. How they find suppliers and do quality checks of that.

Missed talking about the Pininfarnia acquisition !
Now I want one on Tavera vs Qualis vs Sumo vs Innova, please!

Great episode, as always.

Thanks for such interesting anecdotes 😊
Tata can be quicker enough to adopt hybrid. Since they have 1.2ltr turbo and non turbo variant and it can be easy to bundle it with their technology of EV. Would love to look at it.
Hormzad is gonna get a That ROXX. He seems pretty impressed with it.
Scorpio ❤🎉

I'm sensing there's gonna be a podcast on Indica pretty soon
Really hope they make a nice sporty hathback or sedan.
Mahindra is our Indian Lomborghini❤
When is the Scorpio N Refresh coming please. Any time lines for the The Upgrade of Scorpio N ?? Please do share
Very good podcast.
Can we see an analysis on Kia india?
Can you drop these in Spotify as well!! Please.
they are on spotify!
Pulling that plug on the FORD deal was a smart move ,now Mahindra can sell XUV 700 and Scorpio N with no competition .
Man I m at my 30’s now but dam m Scorpio was my dream vehicle wen I was kid ..
Phenomenal!
(thesaurus)
Guys no talk on TUV 300 (Bolero Neo) why 😂
All models should have strong hybrids to have a vast appeal
We missed Alturas in the discussion.
I think Mahindra should provide more features at their entry level cars for instance in their basic car it does not have even an cruise control which although is not a great feature, but people if comparing with other cars it might lag behind, and it does not provide alloy wheels rather than wheel caps, Indian consumer these days are ready to shell out money but they want an excellent product, I think they should think on this side as well
5:40 right i rmeber this
Hormazd🙌🏼
Very interesting point. Mahindra learnt a lot from JVs. Ford, Renault, Nissan,Sanyong, Navistar. The quality change shows in their lineup .. imagine Armada,Commander and now Xuv700 and Scorpio N.
Tata on the other had no JV I think ..may be learning’s from JLR. And other than Nexon and Punch and may be Curv.. they just have 2 ponies.
Electric I think might not be Tatas strong point in few years as MG , BYD and Maruthi are racing fast including Mahindra.
It’s a different matter of point that most batteries are made by Tata.
I think Tata has lost its brut image and has the urban vehicle image.
Mahindra is today and was the true Brute vehicle manufacturer. (Isuzu , Toyota are some worthy mentions)
Imagine if Ford had launched Scorpio in US!
Americans don't care. They have much larger SUVs since before the Scorpio.
would have become a huge flop. USA SUV market is cut throat and completely different than India.
please answer why scorpio N suspension failed on multiple cars
Want to see podcast on Tata motors
Proud owner of Scorpio N!
Being an XUV 700 Diesel owner, I choose to disagree with Hormazd on his claim that their desiel engine is world class on one count, when it came to BS6, they have a big issue with oil dilution, which will spoil their reputation in the long run, have my concerns on longevity of Mahindra BS6 Diesel engines if they don't address the oil dilution issue sooner. Many ECU software update were attempted but still no improvement. But Yes these engines are punchy & torquey and gives good mileage. One more point that was sidelined is that more than Scorpio , untill the scorpion came, Bolero was their main stay with 7-9k monthly sales.
I think it's the same story for Pulsar with Bajaj.
Then again they had Chetak
