  • We’re often encouraged to think that the secret to starting is a business is to have a bold and entirely original idea. But the suggestion here is that all we really need is to LOVE something a little more than most other people do: that will be enough to help us stand out from the competition.

    “Many of us want to start our own businesses. Public space is filled with reports of new ventures. But the reporting on entrepreneurship is heavily skewed in one particular direction: towards people who have started new kinds of businesses, pioneers who have pushed the boundaries of commerce by creating a wholly original offering, usually through the help of an innovative piece of technology...”

    I started and ran an aquarium service for 25 years, and I loved it. I retired when I was no longer physically able to do it. I passed my clients along to another young hobbyist who also loves aquariums. It never made me wealthy, but in all those years I never once dreaded going to work.

    3. Commit to excellence of a given product
    4. Reinvest profit and focus on the long-term

    The name of the video is "HOW" to start a business and not "WHY"
    So instead of watching a video where I get some explanation about pragmatic and direct tips for starting a business I just hear some idealistic and philosophical oppinion about what should be the reasoning behind your own decision and motivation as to why to start a business.

    • @bolivar1789
      @bolivar1789 6 років тому +41

      Hallöchen Friedrich! You may be right, but on the other hand, one could also argue that the very first step of that HOW must be to be very clear about WHY. I mean no offence really. Just a thought...Have a nice evening.

    • @Belphoron
      @Belphoron 6 років тому +12

      sure Lua you are right that your own intentions should be the basis on which to decide such big projects in life.
      Nevertheless the title implies something elseor it should have either been called "Why to start a business" or they should have put both the reflection as a first part in the video and after that they should have explained the pragmatic details for such a project.
      Philosophy is good and dandy, but business is about business and wont happen just by thinking it and the biggest reason why most people do not try a business themself is because they dont know "how", rather then "why" :)

    • @bolivar1789
      @bolivar1789 6 років тому +5

      Guten Morgen! Thanks a lot for such a kind response and for taking the time to explain. Now I definitely see your point. But I am not so sure if people really know that WHY part so well you know... I mean most folks I know would say " to make money and to live a good life". But if you asked more questions about what a good life means, very few would say that it has something to do with helping others, solving real problems etc. People think a good life is a life in luxury. But a fulfilled life requiers more meaning than that...
      But as I said, of course I see your point too. I hope they make another video where they explain the HOW part too. Have a nice day :- )

    • @Belphoron
      @Belphoron 6 років тому

      Definitely. Actually what you say is true. For me personally this kind of thought process is just "normal" and 2nd nature to me so it feels more like the normal approach, but yeah, for most people this seems to be a rather new insight, considering their "programming" :)

    • @framedheart

      Maybe it should be called obsession. What are you secretly obsessed about or obsessed to change? I think 'loving' something here means you understand and thirsty about the reward of doing or accomplishing something. Like when you wanna score in sports game. Love here doesn't mean something passive or abstract, but more like a determined state of mind.

    Entrepreneurship reporting focuses heavily on radical, technologically-based innovation.
    Most businesses operate in mature sectors and do not love what they do.
    There are two types of businesses: pragmatic businesses and businesses of love.
    Businesses of love have a total commitment to excellence and reinvest their profits into guaranteeing excellence.
    They focus on the long-term and are driven by a deep passion for their product or service.
    Businesses of love may not always be financially successful but find purpose beyond money.
    There are opportunities for entrepreneurs in industries dominated by pragmatic businesses.
    Success does not require radical innovation, but rather offering something you love intensely.

      Have you guys noticed that :
      eating out is very difficult and expensive.
      in an area, typically,
      you might find an outlet selling pizza,
      you might sometimes find a restaurant in which meals are quite expensive,
      and that's it.
      Here you barely have : very few foods, and they are expensive
      You can eat almost nothing,
      Do you guys see ?
      This model is very inefficient
      Eating out is nearly impossible
      Something is definitely missing
      it is : a restaurant where food keeps changing, food changes every day
      Chefs also rotate
      A meal is going to be cheap
      You get new foods every day. After a period of time : you will have eaten thousands of foods
      Do you see the difference now ?
      This model is way better
      Eating out will finally become possible.

    1. Friends who want to get rich, here is an idea for you:
    If you think that money and power alone would make you a happy person, you should first observe the people who already got there. You could start by watching the excellent movie " Wolf of Wall Street" by Martin Scorsese. It is based on a true story.
    You can also watch " Citizen Kane" and the most depressing documentary I have ever seen in my life: " Born Rich".
    Of course we need to make money in order to live a decent life. But it is really crucial to realise that the fancy house and the car and the rolex and whatever luxury we can imagine can only give us "comfort" but it is absolutely not enough to lead a " fulfilling life". We can only feel fulfilled when we lead a meaningful life. Making money alone, can never get us there.
    2. For example take Maria Popova. She is the founder of the wonderful website Brainpickings. She used to have a steady , well paid job , but this is what she says about her decision to leave it:
    “Do I want to bury myself in a corporate job that I’m going to spent 80% of my waking hours at, be miserable, and hope that the money it gives me will make the other 20% of my life better, even though I’m angry and tired and burned out? Or, do I want to do something that makes me happy to wake up to and happy to go to sleep having done and let the financial part figure itself out?"
    Now she is reading and writing all day and bringing wisdom into people's lives through her website! And turns out that it became a huge success and she makes her living out of it!
    3. Anyone who is willing to think deeply enough on this issue, before deciding what to do, must also read Alain's great book: " The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work". I have found so many things in it that I have never thought about before. And I can't recommend you enough the documentary " Status Anxiety", which you can find on youtube.
    4. If you are not sure about where to find meaning for your life, Ken Robinson have wonderful speeches on this issue. Just search for his name on TED. He also gave a speech in TSOL which is on youtube. It is called " Ken Robinson on Passion".
    5. I have a lawyer friend in Istanbul, she was also the chief editor of a Kurdish newspaper and that's why there are 142 lawsuits against her! For more than a year now, she is expecting to be taken to prison. I saw her last month again and instead of complaining about her situation she told me: can you believe that most lawyers don't attend torture victims who have no money? She can't believe that there are people who wouldn't help if they don't get paid for it.
    She has a modest income because most of her clients can't pay her, but she is one of the strongest and most peaceful people I know.
    Those who do a work of love don't expect external rewards. The real reward is in knowing that they are doing the right thing. They have a sense of dignity, a clarity of mind and an urge to lead a "meaningful" life and serve a noble cause. That's where their strength comes from.
    Her example shows that yes, you can be "this idealistic" and still make enough money to live with dignity.

      @bolivar1789 6 років тому +10

      You sound very arrogant my friend. Well yes, I seriously recommend that movie to everyone. It is truly a masterpiece that shows you where GREED can take you. You can have all the money and status in the world and still be absolutely miserable and ruin other people's lives too. You may know that the movie is based on a real story. Leonardo di Caprio says that when he read the book, he thought he had never read something so embarrassing in his life. That's what I mean.
      By the way, if you want to criticise someone's opinion, it is NOT the kindest way to call it " fucking funny". I am just saying.

    I think the book, Start With Why by Simon Sinek is a great book for anyone who want to start a business, organization, or just anything in general. It relates to the parts in the video about loving what you do and how businesses, that don't love what they do fail. It's a really great book and I can't emphasize how much this book really change my view on why you should always start with WHY in everything you do. Give it a read, you won't regret it.

    A- Write a plan which states:
    1- What you will sell
    2- How much it costs to make
    3- How much you will sell it for
    4- How many you need to sell to profit
    5- How you will gain that share of customers
    6- How you will sell it.
    B- Acquire the amount of money that it will take to enact that plan.
    C- Enact that plan.

    All businesses that ever was or will be are directed toward a very simple basic need, the lower level of Maslow's pyramid.
    All fancy food industries, complex recipes and quisineses are simply there because we get hungry. All the porn industry and seduction manifestos and dating tips are there because we have desire. All jargonic philosophy and psychology are there because we are curious and anxious and wish to understand ourselves and the world around us. And all science and technology are there because we are lazy and at the same time creative, so we want things to get done easier, and our brains pops up an idea every now and then .
    And all art are there because some people have heavy emotional tanks and brilliant perspectives and they are genius in the way which they express it .
    Thank you school of life

      That's not true. The School of Life is a business that doesn't serve the base level of Maslow's hierarchy. Physiological needs keep us alive, but we need ideas to prosper, and these are further up the hierarchy. More realistically, good businesses solve a problem for their customers. The great ones anticipate their customers' needs and innovate. Do either one well and you'll succeed. However, the point of this video is that starting a business should solve your own problems too. It's ok if it's just a means to an end, where once you've made enough money, you sell it and move on to do something else. Or, you just make a decent living. That's ok too. You don't have to love what you do. Just love doing it well.

    • @hamzasaleem3897
      @hamzasaleem3897 6 років тому

      You are right , I was mistaken in putting all needs at the basic level of Maslow's hierarchy.but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.
      If you want to look at the example of the school of life through the lens of Maslow's, this channel provides you basically with information ( pretty good ones ) . In a hunter gatherer prespective . Sapiens needed informations to survive , so it's an instinct as well . And we're constantly drown to new pieces of it.
      This opinion might be exaggerated. But I think that human needs are just simple. It's because they constantly need new stimulation ,they became complicated .

    I thought it was very interesting how it spoke about the wider aspects of how a company should see its purpose beyond spending money like creating jobs, producing what doesn't harm anyone or the environment, and i thought it was interesting at the start how it spoke about the need for entirely original ideas as being a niche more then a general rule, you just have to do something different, new, or better then anyone else focusing upon location within the art and science that is business.

    This is very beautiful indeed. I started my business 3 years ago out of love. I have been working 70 hours per week and making almost no money at all. At first it was still possible beacause I had money put aside and my husband helped me but 3 years have gone by and I am sad with my passion, not that I don't love my passion, I do love it even more than before it is the reason why I wake up in the morning but I have become bitter and I hate that... so, I really don't know what to say because I am almost paying myself to continue my business which is not sustainable... and if I do another job on the side I will not be able to work on my business because I will not have the health to do it... Those who hate their businesses doing it only for money earn a lot and those who care and that think with love are not valued enough...strange world we live in !

I've been having trouble thinking of how to go about it, but I think this video has guided me to the things I know I'd like to try. Even if it fails, at least I will learn the important things along the way. This is due to the fact I'd be much more motivated to explore what needs to be done. Whereas if it was a money-maker business, I'd probably just give up on the idea seconds in

    Interesting video. Business of love can often be the best kind to start. A problem though is that the things you love can't always become a business. You can implement them into a business, but they can't always be the focal point. I love philosophy. Maybe one day I will make a business like the SOL but most likely not. It seems the easier way is to create a pragmatic business, and create a passive income stream.

    Very good advice. I wouldn’t say follow your passion though (no offense). I would say get curious about things that are at least interesting to you that you can see yourself doing and then as you get better at it you’ll begin to love it. Even though you still can fall and get hurt. I love the School of Life because they’re so much more structurally sound in their perspective and advice than much of popular Christian belief. This is a long way of saying that I’m entering my 10th year in running my own business as a Tree Surgeon (Certified Arborist) and this video is very true. If you’re looking at starting a business I’d recommend offering a service first and learn business principles first hand and then improve and specialize the better you get at something within that industry. That’s what gives me motivation to keep going. I fell out of a tree yesterday and now my head is spinning in ways to move forward in my industry that doesn’t require me to get up 100ft. In the air just to keep the business doors open. Thank you School of Life for giving me great new thoughts to help me on my journey for contentment and actual progress.

    Well... one year ago I had my own business. It was a little innovative product that was supposed to motivate children to eat healthy lunch at school. People were quite enthusiastic about it. It was even spontanously advertised on social media by celebrity that accidentally met us. (She had a TV show about raising children that was quite popular in my country.) But even though everybody was very keen on our product we just couldn't sell it. There were not enough clients. Savings melted quickly and we had to quit.
    What have I learned from this? You should not be motivated by love for your product but by the love for your clients. Focus on loving people. Simply.
