    5:54 - just coming down to the junction with the now defunct Camerton branch (closed in 1951), by Brassknocker hill. This line is where the Ealing Comedy 'The Titfield Thunderbolt' was fimed - Titfield Station was the old Monkton Combe (now under a school tennis courts). The 'mainline station' shots were filmed at Temple Meads.

About 4 km south of Maiden Newton, the line goes over a nice bridge, over a side road and also the Sydling Water, not far from where it flows into the river Frome. I've ridden part of this line when travelling from Bath to Salisbury in a Class 158; definitely a nice way to travel between two excellent historic cities. I've always wanted to ride this other branch to Weymouth, as it looks like a lovely seaside town, but it's quite a trek from up north so a daytrip from my local station in Blackburn would require some insane planning.

    • @AymanTravelTransport
      @AymanTravelTransport 2 місяці тому +1

      @JohnnyHooverTravels yup, pricing isn't an issue due to split ticketing, but the real problem is the timing. Earliest train I can get from my local station gets me into Preston on time for the 0718 Avanti service to Birmingham, which would connect me to the 0930 XC service to Gloucester, which gets me there with ample time to catch the 1104 GWR service directly to Weymouth.
      However, I'd arrive at 2pm and barely have an hour to spend in Weymouth before have to go back to Gloucester on the 1500 train. Provided the next train to Birmingham upon arriving into Gloucester is not cancelled, even then I'd arrive in New Street long after the last train to Preston (1907) already went and the only possible way to Blackburn thereafter is via Manchester, which I would arrive at 2230 at the earliest, and likely get to Blackburn just before midnight.
      Long day just for an hour in Weymouth is definitely not worth it. Plus, if even one train was cancelled, I'd be snookered! Likewise, if that train getting into Weymouth was delayed, I actually wouldn't have much time to see Weymouth anyway. Thus, I might as well just bite the bullet and get a hotel somewhere like Bristol.

    A beautiful line and one I used to travel on regularly as a child in the late 1960s joining at Maiden Newton after coming from Toller on the connecting Bridport branch. In those days if you were unlucky you got a three car DMU, but as a young boy the sight of a Hymek (a real train) arriving with a consist to take you either North or South made your day. Was it that slow back then?
