How far North can you get, only using local trains?

  • In the UK, each service is given a train identification indicator or "headcode" (as they used to be displayed at the end of the train). The indicator is 4 characters, with the first character being a number that indicates the type of train. A "1" indicates this is an express passenger service, whilst a "2" indicates that this is a local or stopping train.
    So the challenge is, how far North can you get in a day, if you only travel by "Twos".
    Here's the rules:
    + you can start on the first train of the morning out of any station
    + you must travel only on trains with a "2" headcode
    + you must always leave the station you arrived at - no other forms of transport are allowed, including walking between stations
    I won't leave any more details here... you'll have to watch the video to see how I get on and where I go and on which trains.
    As I say at the end, this was the best I've come up with, but I'm happy to hear from you if you think there's another route that can gain more lattitude than I managed.
    finally, I have to add a huge thanks to ‪@travelling_turtle‬ , who's previous exploits have given me the inspiration to try my own challenge. I'm sure if he'd done it, it would have been called #Two24

    I do wish the railway companies would show the headcodes on timetables and departure boards, as they do in mainland Europe. That extra bit of information can be useful sometimes when searching for your train.

    Brilliant idea, brilliantly executed! Well done. Just glad you didn't have to grapple with the existential question of whether you could use a class 9 train or not - at my local station, the all-station Thameslinks are class 9s, but go to Euston and the class 9s are Avanti intercities to Scotland...!

      Haha yes. Others have commented the same. But it wasn't a "not 1s" challenge it was "only 2s" so the question never really came up.
      I may try this again on a different route, but not until the mornings/nights get a lot lighter.

    to be fair the fact this is possible shows how remarkably interconnected the whole rail network is, however whilst the total ticket price is cheaper than what you would pay using express, I'm not sure it warrants the amount of time it took, since a coach can do it 6 hours quicker for £40 less than what was paid here

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  11 місяців тому +2

      haha yes! I can see no logical reason for taking this route unless you are doing a challenge like mine or you just love riding on trains to and from odd places.
      As you say, if you really need to get there and not part with too much money, then I suspect the coach will be the way to do it.

You've got stopping Thameslink service with 9-headcodes and Pendolinos which are 9s as well, meanwhile stopping Southern services from London (skipping the metro stations) are all 1s as well. Nice video! I did a similar trip in 2022 but from Penzance to Thurso in four days. Back then they were running covid timetable so it was possible to get a local from Manchester to Preston an than to Carlisle via the Cumbrian Coast Line all using “Twos”. The only two places where I had to bend the rule were from Carlisle to Kilmarnock where I took an express but stopped at all stations, and from Stirling to Inverness where I skipped a few stops in order to get my final train to Thurso. Glad to see someone also doing this kind of challenge♥!

    Adding this to my favorites. Thanks for uploading, I like these sorts of challenge videos where you try and see what you can do using certain restrictions etc.
    I wonder if you'd have changed for the delayed train and therefore got into Manchester earlier, would you have made any improvement? As it seemed like you were very time limited once you'd crossed the border into Scotland, and the lack of trains late at night were what stopped you from getting further (e.g. into Glasgow, etc).
    Also, this is the sort of thing I'd love to do, but sadly not possible where I live. At my local EMR station, the only trains are 1-headcoded and not 2s.

      Wow, I was staring at headcodes for a good 15 minutes before I noticed the one 2 code from Dumfries to Glasgow. From that, if you can get across Glasgow to Queen St. quickly enough to make the 2322 Alloa train (40+ mins, so trivial if you're allowed to walk it), you can change at Stirling for the Dunblane train (from Edinburgh), for an extra few ticks North. However, it looks like it doesn't quite work. You miss it by a minute or two if you transfer via Glasgow low-level trains. Unless you're happy to take the Subway from Partick to Queen St., which almost seems fine, but the subway station is technically Buchannan St. not Queen St., and you have to cross about 10m of outside pavement between the entrances.

      Doesn't look like the times are very good for getting there at the end of a day's journey. However, if you were doing this in the reverse direction, the 7:08 Chathill to Carlisle could be a place to start. It's a rather later start than this journey, but I would guess that the local trains continue later into the evening down south than in rural Northumberland/Scottish Borders, so you can probably finish later too. Whether that works out to a longer overall journey, I haven't tried to work out.

      @@JohnnyHooverTravels Hi. Sorry for the late reply too.
      The service to Chathill seems as tho it maybe a Parlimentory service but it is daily and according to the latest Northern Rail time tables the times from Newcastle (Upon Tyne) Central are as follows for Tuesday 7 November BUT this is daily ftr
      Depart Newcastle 07:08
      Arrive Chathill 08:23
      or
      Depart Newcastle 19:15
      Arrive in Chathill 20:14
      So unless you can get to Newcastle for 19:15 then you next most northerly on the east side of the country would be Morpeth and that has a more frequent service.
      Using only Northern rail according to the app, the first service leaves Newcastle at 08 12, then at these times:

    Greetings from your newest subscriber! That was fascinating. Lots of places that I've been through in the distant past. Earliest were Stone, Stalybridge and Stafford, en route to college in 1968.
    What do you use for journey planning? At the moment my go-to is Trainline, but I'm looking at doing a 7-Day GB Rail Pass holiday in the Spring and I'm going to need something more sophisticated if I'm going to get the best out of my investment. (First Class for flexibility, and about £580 with my railcard discount.)

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  11 місяців тому

      Welcome on board!
      I use RealTimeTrains, which takes feeds from, well, the real time rail data. Their detailed views quote headcodes and will also give you a good idea what type of train is used for the journey. Once the trip is rostered to a particular train set you even know the exact unit number on the service! (I would have loved that in my trainspotting days).
      I still use apps like trainline for quick planning. RTT knows more, and sooner eg RTT will display a platform number ahead of the station board display- dead handy to beat the crowds at places like Paddington and Euston.
      Thanks again for watching and I hope you have a great time crisscrossing the UK 👍

    Can we also start at any station as I think going a Kent or that area will get you in to Carlisle ealier and then it will get you more services out to Glasgow’s stations then to Edinburgh and better north services lastly is the Caledonian sleeper a 1 or 2 as it technically starts on the same day, and when it splits it’s new head coad maybe a 2
    Also only Yorks that are 2 effectively only go south Sheffield leeds Bridlington scarbados or hull. Newcastle again don’t do 2 to Scotland unless it’s boarder line. So has to be leeds. Going other way my find some odd early morning commuters that are 2 unlike the south

    My daughter and son in law live in Mossley and we've always pronounced it Moss-ley. A hard 's' usually is signified with a double 'ss' whereas a single 's' usually gives a 'zed' sound in British English. The USA do is different so Press-ton (phonetic spelling) would be 'Prez-ton.' This is strange to me,but we aren't originally from the area.

      I travel to the Czech Republic regularly and have a smattering of Czech and I must say that although the language "looks" hard, words are peppered with accents that tell you pretty much exactly how to say it. Meanwhile in English there are no accents and no rules (that aren't broken) and we end up not knowing how things are pronounced!
      I specifically said "Moz-ley" in this video, because someone else commented on a previous video when I said "Moss-ley" that it was not pronounced that way!
      Another friend was telling me that locally there were complaints that the railway operator had not pronounced some Yorkshire names correctly in their automated announcements too. One of the pitfalls of being a travel youtuber I suppose...
      Thanks for watching and I hope that didn't spoil it too much for you 👍

      There is often difficulty in distinguishing between the local pronunciation of a place name and the local accent. In Manchester (later Stockport) there used to be a bus manufacturer called Crossley Motors. Most people said Cross-ley, but people with strong Lancashire accents said Crozz-ley. I suspect Mozz-ley is the same. It probably goes with the Lancashire "buzz", as in "Shurrup an' gerron t'buzz!".

      Funny. I lived in NYC for 78 years and have always pronounced the name of my state's capital, Albany, with a deep "a": all-bany. [With my Noo Yawk accent, it's probably more like awl-bany.] Now I discover that everyone on UA-cam says it with a broad "a", as in "Albert". Then there's that country, Oll-bania....

      @@harveywachtel1091Albany is just another term for Scotland or in the Gaelic - Alba. Alba is pronounced Al-Bah in English but Al-ah-bah in the Gaelic. Albany can be pronounced Al-bany or Awl- bany depending on which school you went to.

      9 is a special requirement service. Crossrail trains get it because they go into the tunnel. So do Thameslink. I believe it means it gets priority by the signaller

    • @memediatek
      @memediatek 11 місяців тому +1

      9 means special signalling instructions. It is a reminder to the signaller that the train may need different procedures. Usually used by trains that may disappear briefly because of signalling system changeovers.
