- Today I am sharing a really quick and easy project - a DIY pinafore dress with a detachable bib! I love making clothes that can be worn in multiple ways, so this is something that I have always wanted to make.
In this DIY pinafore dress sewing tutorial, I will show you how to sew a pinafore dress by adding a detachable bib to an existing skirt. There’s no pattern needed and you can make it according to your own measurements. Again, this is a fantastic sewing project for beginners!
You can choose to make a half circle skirt using my previous video tutorial, use the remnant fabrics from your previous skirt sewing project, or even use a thrifted maxi skirt! If you are running short on your remnant, you can also use a different fabric for the underside of the straps and bibs.
I also share some design ideas and additional suggestions for modifications for this DIY pinafore dress to work for your body and your style. There are so many different ways to make this! Leave a comment and tell me if this is something you are thinking about making for the holiday season, or if you are adding this to your cottagecore / vintage inspired style wardrobe.
Review all the steps to sewing on my blog with some supplementary photos here: gwenstellamade.com/tutorials/...
ERROR: At 6:40, I said to place strap pieces WRONG SIDES together when sewing. That's incorrect!! It should be RIGHT SIDES together. Thank you to the helpful viewer that flagged it. See pinned comment! :)

Why do you say wrong sides together? Isn't it right sides together if you are flipping it?
Ooo which point of the video is it? Could you let me know the timestamp?
@@gwenheng around 6:40, you say it another time too, when sewing the straps together
@@enchantedocelotgaming7520 Oh DANGGGGGG you're absolutely right. It's supposed to be RIGHT SIDES together because we flip it out. Thank you for flagging it!!! Pinning your comment so people will see it too xxx 💗
My 92 year old Grandmother just gifted me her fabric stash (which she's been saving since the 50's!) and amid all the scraps I found an unfinished midi skirt. She had already made the waistband, hemmed it, and added both a zipper and pockets, so all I have to do is sew the waistband on. Watching this tutorial gave me the idea to turn it into a pinafore dress too! She had quite a bit of the same fabric left over, so I'll be able to make it out of the same material :) I can't wait to show her the finished product!
This is such a good tutorial! Your explanation of the measurements is great and allows us to recreate it for our own bodies. Thank you!!
Thank you for your comment, Jamie! 💖 Honestly, I still find it hard to explain sewing things so I'm really happy to hear this :))
I love the way you explain things!!! This is such a thoroughly helpful tutorial!!
Thank youuuuu~~~~ this comment means so much to me! Sometimes I wonder if I am spending too much time trying to make my explanations better. Thank you for letting me know it's worth it! xx
The detachable bib is such a cool idea!
😍 the pinafore goes sooo well with your blouse!
Hehe thank you!!! I had a hard time deciding if I wanted the collars in front or behind the bib if you know what I mean... so excited about how my AW capsule is coming along! So glad you are here on this journey with me 💖💖💖🥰🥰🥰
This is THE cutest thing, you are so talented!! I’ve been dying to sew my own dresses, but I have literally never operated a sewing machine correctly, have no knowledge on patterns or stitches or any of this. I hope I can tackle this one day! ❤️
You can!! I believe in you!!! Looking forward to seeing your version one day 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you for sharing
Super cute
Very clear and precise tutorial. Thank you Gwen!
You’re so welcome! 💗💗💗
I love this!! Could you maybe do a video on using the buttonhole foot? 💕
Hi Katy, I'm so glad you like this video. ☺That's a great idea, I'll add that to the list!
Really great options, love ur vibe. Keep on goin. Def goin to make this bib for my little angel and myself. ❤️
Aww yay! 💓 Hope your pinafore turned out great!! xx
Thank you so much for your tutorial! I had some troubles with the button holes but in the end you don't see them fortunately ! I absolutely adore my first pinafore dress and the fact that it is detachable is just extra :))
Yay!!! So happy to hear that it all worked out for you!
Loved this! And all the extra suggestions and thrift suggestion. Look forward to seeing more videos
Yay! Thank you Zohra! 💞 I really appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment and let me know what you enjoyed. This helps me to know what the viewers want! xx
No problem wishing you all the best and excited to see future videos!
❤❤❤ thank you
I like the cat shape pocket idea. I also love how you talk about modifications that can be made, its inspiring. I've seen someone with a tip about snap on. They put chalk on the protruding ends and squished it on the other fabric. Basically what you did but used chalk to make the dent more visible.
That’s such a great idea! Thank you for sharing. Yep, so many ideas, so little time 🥹
New Subscriber! So happy I stumbled across your channel! My daughter has fallen in love with pinafore dresses and I knew they couldn't be THAT difficult. Your tutorial is super informative and easy to follow.
Hi Penny!!! Welcome!! So glad you found me 😊💕 Have you tried making the pinafore yet? :D
I will try this this week
Let me know how it goes!! xx
Love this. Clever, and fun - both dress and presenter. 😃👍✨ New Subbie 😁
Awww hiiii so happy to have you here!!! 💗😍💗
This is literally perfect for the asuka/rei schooluniform cosplay im planning to make for me and my friend !!! I already have the pattern for the skirt but was unsure of the pinafore part. Thnk you :D
Yay! 💖🥰
Wow, that's a fantastic tutorial and you explained everything so clearly! I just have one question and that's would it be possible to make the detachable bib for a full circle skirt? I don't see why it wouldn't but I figured there is no harm in asking.
You can add this detachable pinafore to anything!! Even shorts!!! As long as they have a side zipper so this same pinafore bib design will still work. And if your bottom (skirt/pants/shorts) isn’t high-waisted then the measurements have to be taken accordingly from the waist ✨✨✨
GWEN THIS WAS SO GOOD🎉🎉🎉🎉 Thank you im going to make one. Do you have any advice for working with really this fabric? I want to make a heavy woolen skirt
Thank you!! 😚 Hmm I’ve never made one in heavy wool but from what I know, I think the important thing would be to really let the skirt hang and the bias fall, then trim and even out the hem. Good luck with making one!! Can’t wait to see your version 💗
This is so helpful! I’m a beginner sewer making a pinafore dress for a costume and this is going to be so helpful. One question; I want to add buttons to the middle of my bib so it buttons up in the front. How would I go about measuring to allow for that?
Great video, I can’t wait to watch what else you have!! :-)
Yay! Well it depends on whether you want functional buttons or just the ~look~ of buttons in the middle?? If you want functional buttons, then you'll have to split the square in the middle, then add some allowance next to it for the buttons. Kinda like how the fabric overlaps in the middle of a button-front shirt! x
I love this pinafore but I also simply adore your blouse! I’ve been trying to find steps for something just like that. Did you make it?
Yes I made the blouse! 🥰 I drafted the pattern but the design is based on a vintage pattern. Here’s my sewing process: ua-cam.com/video/k1nebe5Ok58/v-deo.html
Hope it’s helpful!!
@@gwenheng oh my goodness, you did, thank you! I just drafted my first fitted bodice and now I’m going to tackle this cutie patootie :)
i would rather use hooks and eyes to attach the bib to the skirt because i've always have issues with opening snaps without damaging the fabric unless it's a super heavy fabric
That’s definitely another option! Personally, I have sewn snaps on fabrics without much damage to the fabric. Some vintage designs I’ve worked with even have side snap closures rather than side zippers! I just love snaps 😁😄
How do I make the skirt shorter
Great question! If you are thinking about making the half circle skirt like the one featured in this video, check out my earlier *half circle skirt sewing tutorial* : ua-cam.com/video/xXX6IJzXYlk/v-deo.html. There's a part where I talk about taking measurements of your body to decide the *skirt length* . Use a *_shorter skirt length_* if you want the skirt shorter! Hope this helps! ☺
Which fabric are you using?
I used a thrifted bedsheet. So it’s kind of like a polycotton poplin fabric.
