- The history of South African Jazz is a rich mix of cultural influences. It is a story of struggle and resilience, as musicians during the apartheid era used their voices to challenge social injustices. The music reflects not only the history of South Africa, but also its power to unite cultures and communities.
During the South African Jazz Celebration we honour the rich jazz traditions that emerged from this. Think of the music of South African jazz legends such as pianist Abdulah Ibrahim, double bassist Johnny Dyani and trombonist Jonas Gwangwa, but also more contemporary artists such as pianists Bokani Dyer and Nduduzo Makhathini.
Joy of Jazz presents a special line-up:
Darren English - trumpet
Titi Luzipo - vocals
Thapelo Khumisi - piano
Karlah Nhlamulo Rametsi - saxophone (Exceptional Endorsed Talent)
Nhlanhla Mahlangu - saxophone (Endorsed by the Hugh Masekela Foundation)
Marius Beets - bass
Gijs Dijkhuizen - drums
This concert is part of the Sena Performers International Jazz Laureate Festival (SPIJLF). During this concert series, ten international festivals get the chance to put a promising jazz talent from their own country in the spotlight, and thus give a kick-start to their international career. This year, talents from the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Spain, Thailand, Italy, Australia and Bulgaria will present.
This concert is endorsed by Joy of Jazz & the Hugh Masekela Foundation
All participating festivals are partners of the World Jazz Network, an international collaboration of jazz festivals and venues to promote the exchange of jazz talent beyond their own national borders.
