I never get enough of this song,
I watched this while I was high and I cried. ..
situation RITE NOW...sky high..l
I always cry at this beautiful and sad tune...and I am not high! Just love this piece for its masterful song and instrumentation!
This song is the best song ever and talks about our history in South Africa
HUGH MASIKELA _ STIMELA (lyrics)
There is a train that comes from Namibia and Malawi
there is a train that comes from Zambia and Zimbabwe,
There is a train that comes from Angola and Mozambique,
From Lesotho, from Botswana, from Zwaziland,
From all the hinterland of Southern and Central Africa.
This train carries young and old, African men
Who are conscripted to come and work on contract
In the golden mineral mines of Johannesburg
And its surrounding metropolis, sixteen hours or more a day
For almost no pay.
Deep, deep, deep down in the belly of the earth
When they are digging and drilling that shiny mighty evasive stone,
Or when they dish that mish mesh mush food
into their iron plates with the iron shank.
Or when they sit in their stinking, funky, filthy,
Flea-ridden barracks and hostels.
They think about the loved ones they may never see again Because they might have already been forcibly removed
From where they last left them
Or wantonly murdered in the dead of night
By roving, marauding gangs of no particular origin,
We are told. they think about their lands, their herds
That were taken away from them
With a gun, bomb, teargas and the cannon.
And when they hear that Choo-Choo train
They always curse, curse the coal train,
The coal train that brought them to Johannesburg.
History of Southern Africa .true
Rest in peace oh wise one, you will never ever be forgotten
I think this has to be one of the best songs that I will remember from Hugh... Having taken the train to and fro school during my childhood days I can relate to it - Eish... Stimela sihamba ngamalahle... Iyiiii khuchu!

Great stuff! This is music at its highest level one with Soul and a Social and Economic Message at the same time! THE ECONOMIC RIGHTS MOVEMENT approves of this kind of music!!!
A legend not appreciated in his own land...
My favourite song. STIMELA! All those artist. Hugh, on that horn. Took charge. It's his song. And every one else on their instruments. Who could ask for anything more?
One of the greatest that ever lived
Absolument SUBLIME !!!!
And of course ALL the musicians on this are great. Totally in the pocket LOVE Terri Lyne Carrington on drums.... Total taste
Indeed Hugh is a Legend & Icon. Powerful!

Performance! even when u don't understand the lyrics but still feel and appreciate the song

I am so taken by this song, it makes me feel strange things...
Have not seen often this tight female drummers, this is amazing.
The lyrics tells the history and it's darkness that is normally not conveyed.

The song is based on a political- economic reality. Apatheid South Africa gave Mozambique some business. They d send some exports thru their port if theyd supply men to work in South Africas mines. The coal train transported those men. A one way jouney!
