- If you want a long tapered point on your charcoal and graphite drawing pencils, but you hate sharpening by hand, then you’re going to LOVE these long point electric pencil sharpeners! I’ve been using one for a year and a half now, and I just can’t imagine drawing with the super short points most sharpeners produce.
In this review, I compare the AFMAT long point sharpener I’ve been using for a year and a half with both a new sharpener of the same model, and a new one of a slightly different model by AFMAT. I let you know all the deets about the two, the differences, and which one is best.
Last year I compared one of these sharpeners to an Exacto sharpener, and you can see that review here: • The Best Electric Penc...

Good review. I didn't know about this Afmat brand until now.
Great info! Thank you
Nice. I have the same one (with the blue accent) and I love it. They also make a great electric eraser. I have the EE03 and it's very comfortable.
Ooh I have to try the eraser!
I always heard that electric pencils sharpeners chew through pencils really fast. I find that charcoal pencils are too fragile for them too.
I use my charcoal pencils in this sharpener exclusively! It works great!
You might be able to get a replacement blade for the one that's gotten dull. Afmat offers them for the corded sharpeners, so maybe they offer them for the rechargeable ones, as well.
I wrote them and some models do and others don’t have a replacement. I now prefer the corded one so I can replace the blades!
I've never been able to use my Conte' pencils because every sharpener I use breaks the crayon, so I stuff them in the back of my tackle box, and stick with the sticks. My pencil sharpeners have been typical office sharpeners like Boston brand. I think my favorite pencil sharpener is the Alvin brass Bullet, that is a knock off of a popular antique 19c. bullet shaped sharpener. I might have to get me an AFMAT.
FWIW I did sharpen the Conte white pencils (and charcoal pencils) in the AFMAT that has 2 different sized openings. Worked beautifully!
I have the first two, both won’t
sharpen
So how do fix it
So, can someone tell me what lasts longer? An X-Acto corded sharpener, or an AFMAT? Since there is no option to pick Boston anymore.
In my experience, it depends on the model. Lots of the smaller X-Acto ones stop working well very quickly. The blue X-Acto school one lasts quite a while, but it makes sense because it doesn't sharpen as much each pencil, since it's a smaller taper. My AFMAT has lasted as long as a typical blue X-Acto for me. The main benefit is that longer taper that X-Acto can't match.
Have you tried the Conte a Paris Pierre Noire B3 pencils?, because they are very fragile... I read in a forum of artists that they put the pencil in the refrigerator overnight so that the lead hardens enough to be able to sharpen them.
I’m not that good. I’m working on it. I believe.
