I love that there are different criteria and even options for off handed folks! The peeler design made me giggle a bit, but I can see the a-peel (ba dum tish) since I used to sharpen my pencils with a small pen knife while I was in college. It was messy, but easier for me to control and I could use the knife for multiple types of pencil and other drawing tools that need a good sharpening off and on.

@Claire Sterling - It depends on what the work/school and local rules are... If it's high school and below, maybe not. If it's college/university, and you see people are using shop knives, pocket knives, multi-tools, then it's probably no problem.
Same for workplaces. It can vary by company, and local/state/federal law. Just be aware and act accordingly.

    • @P3rformula

Got the Kum Masterpiece which is nice but you need to be careful on the 2nd step or you break the lead real easy. I found putting the pencil in an electric drill and bringing the sharpener to the pencil with light pressure works great.
Now I just use a utility knife/razor blade it's much more satisfying and you get to sculpt the point any way you like it just takes more time

  • @StopFear

I have been using color and graphite pencils heavily for years and from my experience even the best (single blade) sharpeners will cause leads to break in some pencil no matter how carefully you use them. Cuts the wood perfectly but then breaks the lead tip off. The manual sharpeners that have a spiral blades imo are the best as a category. In my case the leads just don’t break in them.

The Kum Masterpiece has one feature that wish more sharpeners had. Replaceable blades. A lot of times I've tried taking out the screws on cheaper sharpeners in order to sharpen the blade. Invariably the screws will not turn. I thin the manfactures use an adhesive on them. After all they want you to buy a new sharpener. I wish somebody sold a sharpener that used either single edge razorblaes or the ones for utility knives. Blade gets dull just flip it end for end or replace.
