@@Pedro_opcIt should never be any In-N-Out play on any turbo on a wet journal bearing turbo aka brass bearing turbo you have your side to side play but as a turbo runs oil fills that gap if you have a ball bearing turbo you shouldn't have any play because the ball bearings should not have side to side nor in or out play

I have a turbo on a Cat 3176B, and I was just checking the shaft play. I get a bit of blue smoke, seemingly from the turbo, my buddy says they do that when they've sat for a long time, this one was a fire truck put on less than 500 miles a year for 20 years, then sat for 3 years before I got it.
Was thinking of rebuilding it myself this winter, just trying to figure out how much of an emergency it is. Doesn't seem like an emergency.

Would it be sane to rebuild a turbo after 7 years of ownership? Oils and filters are changed regularly. It is on a 2.5l diesel and it is an aftermarket kit. The land rover is used for towing up hill but it is hardly driven fast and hard because the roads are not decent. It is blowing some oil through the compressor side and It is not screaming that much at the moment.
