    Very important video Jamie, definitely something which I didn't realise when I applied. The systems are there to help as you say, but it's definitely a brutal academic world. Remember though - there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that moment when you finish your last exam makes all the essay crises worthwhile. Not long now, keep going!

    Seriously, as much as I feel it's very inspiring and wonderful to be an Oxbridge student, I will never comprehend how you cope with the pressure and the overwhelming amount of dilemmas. If I study for 1 hour, I need an hour-long break and I still feel bored. Okay, I am not the best example, but still.

    • @Jamoe

      +Emily Simpson You can design your life to deal with high-stress environments. I won't go into details, but there was a time when I was extremely stressed, and the toil it took was intense. However, I then overcame it.
      To prevent experiencing the same thing, I would recommend a couple of things that I adopted to get back to top form:
      1. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Most Oxbridge students are high achievers, and have been academically successful without much help from their peers or tutors, so some view asking for help as a weakness. Don't think this. If you are stuck on something, talk it through with friends or your tutors.
      2.. Build fun into your schedule. Schedule time to go to the pub, play a board game, or just hangout with friends. There will *always* be more work to do, so set a hard deadline and strive to get as much done in that time as possible. You'll be emotionally healthier, more motivated because you know you have a break scheduled, less likely to burn out, and you'll learn when your work is *good enough*.
      3.. Stay active. Whether this is going for a walking for 15-30 minutes each day to get some headspace and fresh air, or going to martial arts 3 times a week - you're body will thank you for giving it time to release all the tension you've built up. You'll feel better, sleep better (crucial), and it'll help you see the bigger picture and prioritise when things are bothering you.
      4. The above three things are not wastes of time. They ensure your long-term health and stamina. The benefit of walking for 15 minutes outweighs continuing to stress over the problem sheet you have been stuck on.

      Oh, sorry to be responding so late.. but other students and faculty love discussing their strategies.. just think of how much you love to be asked about a topic that you are well-versed in -- flip that around and that will likely represent the willingness and enthusiasm that you'll encounter in asking for help.

      +Rowan Redshaw Very late reply, but you're not far down the comment section. I'd advise you to try to try managing your time well, and keeping track of how much time you spend on things. Try to do a 45 hour week of studying (including contact time) and see how you cope, it will give you a bit of an indication how much you might be doing if you get in here for some subjects. (Don't keep this experiment up for too long though - enjoy your free time before it all falls away from you!).

    4:23 'That is the hidden gem to having an Oxford education.' Everything you described before this can be experienced at any institution. Moreover, I don't agree that increased workload equals better education.

    • @user-ub8oi7oh3r
      @user-ub8oi7oh3r 7 років тому

      Tibbity More work load CAN make you better, but only depending on the profession. More workload in a subject in art won't help because art is more about quality. But more work load in a subject like medicine will make you 10x better- because you will never know enough. Which is why oxford is known to be better and creates better students.

    • @tibbity7998
      @tibbity7998 7 років тому

      Aksangel _ Oh, my bad! I didn't explain what I meant by 'workload'. Humans have different memory banks associated with different senses. If the only sense we use whilst learning is our sight then we don't learn as much as we would by utilising them all. Therefore, I don't agree with the equation 'ridiculous amount of written work equals better education'.

    • @user-ub8oi7oh3r
      @user-ub8oi7oh3r 7 років тому

    I don't know whether to apply to Oxford I am going to an open day this June or July. When I went there before, I saw Univ college and one other, as well as the shops.... So I got a very small snapshot of what life could be like studying at Oxford. I didn't feel like I would fit in with the people there (all of a much higher socio-economic standing/class than me) and I don't know if I would be happy there. I want to avoid stress as much as is physically possible. I want university to be the best years of my life and I want to enjoy learning. Hi! First of all, this video was very helpful so thanks a LOT. Second of all, I'd like to know: What high school exams did you pass? Did you pass the A levels, the IB...? I am asking this because I am currently in high school at a french school with international sections, but next summer my family is moving to Geneva for my last two years of high school where I will have to make a choice on whether I want to study the A-levels at the British School or the IB programme at the international school. I am leaning towards the A-levels, because it seems to be a good fit for students who know more or less what they want to pursue in their careers (I'd drop all maths and science, since I'm more interested in diplomacy, humanitarian causes and writing), but I am still quite undecided. Since you seem to be a trustworthy source, could you quickly tell me what high school programme you followed and how you experienced it? Thank you sooooo much :)

  • @jamesjames9193
    @jamesjames9193 9 років тому

    Yes, you are correct but that is because the pass mark to get a decent grade is set higher at Oxbrige - as for the stress, there is always cheap alcohol, and if you so desire, you might find a caring tutor or two, to help you with your grades.

    • @Jamoe
      @Jamoe  9 років тому +1

      James James Cheap alcohol doesn't sound that sustainable, and I found my tutors very supportive :)

    • @jamesjames9193
      @jamesjames9193 9 років тому

      Sadly cheap alcohol plays a big part in many students lives, and as all colleges are run for profit, they are happy to encourage student bars, because it helps to seal the deal - come to our college, get your degree and have the best time of your life; assuming you can handle it.

    Hey, hopefully in the future, I would like to study law at university. My only problem is this; do I study at Oxford, or do I study at Durham. Both look like fantastic places to study, and at the moment it appears that Oxford perhaps only gives you the time to work, whereas Durham allows you to enjoy what you're studying as well as having time to enjoy your life outside academics. Of course Oxford would be great as it is the best uni in the uk for my course, but to me it just sounds like those who go to Oxford/Cambridge aren't enjoying life, but they are just living. I just want to know whether you have anything so say about this, and whether Oxford is actually worth it in the long run. Cheers :)

    • @Jamoe

      Ronan Pandit I have no other university experience to compare it to, but I adored my time at Oxford. Discovering I could work at such a high academic level with strict deadlines, and also balance a social life, sports, UA-cam, and getting the experience to work at companies like Google...
      If you are hesitating, do some more research and see if the current workload you have is similar.
      I would say, if you want to have the full experience, it is up to you. You decide what you get from the opportunities that come your way.

    Hi Jamoe. I'm not sure if you'll read this or if this is the right place to comment but...
    I just got an offer from Oxford, and the main things I'm worried about are 1) socializing - is it going to be hard as an international PoC to make genuine lifelong friends? 2) clubs, societies - are students passionate about stuff beyond their degree?

      I didn't try to apply in college. After secondary school you go to college. College is 2 years. Not college as in university like in America. To get a first I just worked hard and asked for help. I did English so in my second year after constantly getting B+'s I brought some essays to a few lecturers who then went through them with me to see how I could improve. In my third year I randomly started getting A grades lol. My dissertation was also very very very unique. I was the only black guy on my course so I made sure that my final project was interesting and not cliched.

    I think imperial has a similar work load to Oxbridge. I study chemical engineering and we have 30 hours of contact a week and on top of that around 20 hours of independent study. All courses have their own difficulties.

    Please answer! Ok, do you think MIT in the United States is harder? Or of equal academic challenges.

    • @MissDarkMatter
      @MissDarkMatter 7 років тому

      (From my understanding), Oxford is more academically vigorous, in content and workload), than MIT, and also Oxford is I think in the top three universities in the world. So Oxford is much harder, challenging academically, but rewarding :)

    • @lucasuytterhoeven5164
      @lucasuytterhoeven5164 7 років тому

      i would disagree MIT is very focused on mathemathics and scienses while oxford is alot broader, when it comes to mathemathics and anything physics or computer related i would so MIT is equal and in some cases even harder then oxford. But if i would give my overall rating oxford would be harder as oxford is not as specialized but still has the same difficulty...

      if you're applying to mit I suggest you do so through an agency. I didn't do so and literally got rejected from 20 us universities fortunately got into Oxford though xD I don't know what I did wrong but most of my friends got in through an agency. oh and in case you already have a place at mit CONGRATS :D

    • @husnshujaat2985

      good idea, thanks! And you got into oxford, congrats! Can you please show me your personal statement. and tell me more about how did your interview go and what did they ask? I'd be really thankful. Agencies here in my country don't have a good rep, as in, not a good success rate.

    • @rohannuckchady2900

    • @rohannuckchady2900
      @rohannuckchady2900 8 років тому

      Basically Oxford and cambridge don't really care about your personal statement as long as you show enthusiasm for your chosen field. If you still want it i pm me your mail or something. The interview is highly academic they only ask other questions to make you relax a bit. I was asked a couple of questions on mechanics. The problems are kind of require you to analyse a situation and model it mathematically. Then i got some maths questions. ( not the routine type stuff, generally questions that require you to think). This was followed by an estimation problem. (pm me if you want them exactly ). However its the entrance exam that is the most important.

      Science students do have lab work, lectures, problem sheet and moreover, projects to work on.....I am not sure about physics, but as a maths student, I spent my last weekend on a project and slept for 5 hours in total. I reckon the workload won't be any less for other courses.
