I am so glad I found this version of the great Roberta's song; has been in my mind for 40yrs since I met her as a teen singing in Rev Jesse Jacksons Oper. Bread Basket. She was a gracious an extremely talented artist then as now. For those who try to coop the understanding of his song you are so misguided. It is a well knwn fact that Mr Cohen was a functioning opiate addict, so how could you possibly know what was on his mind as he dreamt these lyrics. It's up to us to find our own Suzanne.
Classic. A Mad Beautiful Masterpiece! One of the World's Greatest Songwriter's Most Sterling Songs as interpreted by one of Earth's Greatest Songtresses! Miss Roberta Flack could teach a Masterclass in stroking the human soul with the soft yet forceful Power Of Music! BRAVA!
Leonard Cohen, Roberta Flack and Nina Simone they all do this song so beautifully I love listening to them all. Roberta and Nina just happen to be my most favorite singers followed closely by Shirley Bassey wowowow the voices on these women AMAZING.
this is one of my favorite songs ever recorded she is without doubt the best singer since Aretha. her greatest talent is taking songs and really pushing every bit of musical potential in them to the max. and that voice, its a work of art all by itself
What a voice. She really draws you into the song. Way back in 1973, she recorded Suzanne with a Deodato arrangement that was so opulent you could drown in it. Her vocal power saved it from being schmaltz, and she still has that power. And she can really whack that piano good.
Forever and always this beautiful song HAS to be Leonard Cohen's best work . I think Roberta Flack's version is sheer perfection with the jazzy piano and her haunting voice. However, Neil Diamond's growling , emotional , desire wrenched rendition is close to the exceptional level of the song Flack brings it up to. Both artists performance of this piece is an example of music at it's best. Cohen's own version is powerful and magnificent even though he doesn't have the vocal chops of Diamond and
i have found the dvd...she does this with the Edmonston Symphony from Edmonston Canada...its called Robert Flack live in concert w/the Edmonston Smyp...Dont know how long it is tho...that you will have to find out...
Lovely song. Just wish the audio was better. She sings this with more passion than anyone else. That's not saying other versions aren't good it just means that you feel the power of the song.
@soaringvulture You just did write the precise words down, the lush arrangement is sorely missing here, but still one song to dream/float downstream on.
I really like the album version, especially Deodato's arrangement. But, then again, I like that kind of stuff. It's not being produced anymore because, frankly, a lot of today's singers and musicians lack talent. Guess I'm in trouble now! ;-)
admittedly this is terrible...though her version of 'go up moses' still sends shivers down my spine, pity its not on here somewhere,,, also 'sunday and sister jones' is gorgeous..
How could such a great artist completely misunderstand the lyrics of this song? Rather startling. The eponyous Suzanne is the precise opposed of the self-centered woman Flack describes in her intro. The lyrics couldn't be clearer about that, while some Googling will confirm it.
Roberta is one of the BEST musical artists I have ever known! She is also a beautiful person.

Roberta Flack has to be one of the all time BEST musical artists of the 20th and 21st century! I LOVE her!
