Technically this game sully was Jesus leading sheep 🐑
I would highly, highly advise not buying the Catan PC game. It is unplayable due to absolutely crushingly bad server performance.
Excited to see everyone be very reasonable and sensible in this episode, qualities that Catan always brings out in people…
I'm sure nobody will slight someone because of the rules of spacing out settlements
Haven’t watched the video yet, but I’m getting some major sarcastic vibes from your comment.
@@JonnyLikesGames87 I like the bit where Brooke strangled Laurie to death over ore
@@connor1586 well it was really the stabbing that took him out though
To be fair, Laurie Blake is a very reasonable man and never gets worked up over board games!
Sullivan dozing off as he counts his sheep is genius.
Laurie is going through every experience I have ever had with Catan
It's a great game for building HUGE grudges!
I would have loved to have had Laurie's first experience with Catan. I have played it three times, which I think was more than fair, and got resources six times total.
@@everblight that tells me that you're placing settlements on the worst spots possible
@@danielrichmond5662 no sometimes you just get those games where the number 6 just inexplicably disappears from existance... and being right on the intersection between classic and modern games, at least base catan has no comeback mechanics so it's easy to get just completely fucked over
Me with the ships expansion 💀 That one adds so many empty water and sand tiles to the game, and guess who always lands almost exclusively on those but with like one good tile so the settlement can’t be moved…
Laurie: everyone thinks I'm trying to trick them!!! Why don't they trust me??
Also Laurie: you have ore, Blair? Well it's mine now.
It was a beautiful moment in Lauries otherwise abysmal game
The little captions of *Teri laughs in french* give me a chuckle every time
I’ve only tried to play Catan once and it literally ended in a fistfight in the rain. Can’t wait to see how these very calm adults go about it.
*Looks left*
*Looks right*
Sir, I can't help but wonder if those two words have a different meaning in your native tongue? 😂
Were you playing in the world championship?
Going into the episode: “I absolutely do not understand Catan and never will”
1/3 of the way through the episode: “That’s it?!”
It's not as complex as some make it out to be. It's really more about smart positioning in the early game and being lucky with rolls. Trading is big part of the game that some tables don't like to participate in, but is really core to the experience. Furthermore, this game really benefits from being played with 4 people, it's a much smoother experience than any other number.
very simple rules, medium depth, and lucky dice rolls, that is the game. Most of the rules are about setting up the board.
Until you get one of the expansions.
Adam fighting himself to say "wool" instead of "sheep" in the rules after saying the correct sheep in listing the resources is beautiful
I always call them ponies, so... yeah xd
Also, suddenly switching to "clay" in gameplay 😂😢😮
@@WinterOnTheWeb"clay" is the name of the hex that produces brick, so it's an easy transition.
The correct name of the resource is "wool"
@skwabo Official settlers rulebook _now_ says "Hills" produce brick (the hex is called Hill).
What baffles me is that "Pastures" (dang, I thought those used to be hills or fields) produce WOOL...! Wow! Either things have changed in 29 odd years or I've got serious Mandala effect...
For anyone else doing an ad read I would doubt the enthusiasm. I honestly believe with all my heart that Adam would be absolutely in love with his tiny settlers
Adam has that air where he could probably convince me to sell my house to him and live in a dumpster
blair, sully, and adam: catan board!
me: yeah, laurie's going to flip it
laurie: *flips it *
Sully’s affinity for sheep 🐑 this episode is going to make his horse crushes jealous 🐎 ❤
Sheep are basically just wholly horses.
I like how accurately Sullivan predicted the audience are on his side lmao
I have NEVER played this game before as well despite how popular it is. Never felt encouraged to want it either. Now knowing that Blair, Sully, and Laurie also haven't played it yet convinced me that I'm not crazy.
It's a great game only if you have friends that don't take things personally. It's inherently a competitive game.
@@rainbowskin3379 Only works if the people you play with are actually smart enough to be competitive or at least find enjoyment in games that make them think.
It's... meh. I've never been much of a fan of it, but my friends enjoy it. I just spend every game building the longest road with no attempts to actually win, because I find it boring 😂
@@justinehercthehuman also true. Catan is definitely not a casual game
Catan is an old game that had groundbreaking ideas but also tainted by Monopoly era game design. It's a great classic, but not a game I'd want to play again personally.
My favorite Catan moment has always been when a group of friends decided to play super Catan by running all the expansions (at the time). Won that game by ignoring everything I didn't understand and building an empire on the back of sheep. Cut the island right down the middle with all my road pieces.
Also, last in rotation in Catan is the power move for sure.
Negative 5mins in the game Sully became a baby.
10mins in Blaire turned from catlady to full on cat.
20mins in and Laurie is losing it for being "suspicious"
Lovely stuff! 1 hour to go and I'm already loving this episode.
Of all the games out there, I never would have imagined that Catan would be the one to break Laurie
I would. That game, along with Monopoly and Munchkin, is the worst rage inducing PoS on the market.
I refuse to play Catan for the exact reason Laurie flipped out. I get so angry at this game that I just can't anymore with it.
Any game with a random element that maths outside your favor is always rage educing. Sixes and sevens were very under-rolled in this session while fives was massively over-rolled.
Well thanks, Laurie, I've been randomly screaming "WHEAT!!!" for several hours. I love this channel. ❤
Hello Adam from No Rolls Barred! I'm very glad I've found your channel and have watched the episodes of Board Game Club for 7 months, and all the ones I've watched have been absolute bangers. Thank you for the entertainment.
Watch the thing, Nemesis and Nemesis lockdown and cosmic encounter, their my favourite board games and episodes they've done
Finally! I've been waiting a long time for you guys to play Catan.
1:18:18 Laurie's breakdown was hilarous! Def the highlight for me 😝
1:22:53 😆😆😆
1:23:26 🤣🤣🤣
Add also @1:14:14
I only discovered this channel recently, and it has very very quickly become my favourite one.
Love the content.
Watch Nemesis(including lockdown), the thing and cosmic encounter they're my 3 favourite games they've done
Ugh they are long episodes
@@maxvolume72 I have already binged the lot of it. :D Sully can marry me anytime.
Laurie continues to grow as my favourite member of NRB! honestly your humour and demeanor and everything is so entertaining Laurie!
Laurie's seething rage is one of his greatest traits, alongside his explosive rage.
I just have a thing for angry boardgame men apparently
Glad they accurately represented the Catan experience here (one play being completely out of the game and the 'most common numbers' never being rolled).
A reason why Catan is half-banished from the board game tables around here is just the exact reason why Blaire seemed to be suffering. It's never fun to see such a long stretch of bad luck in these older board games.
It really is a game where if you make an early mistake or two you can't claw your way back to the top. One player always seems to get screwed in Catan.
@@broceollomon That's only when all four players are amateur, like in this instance. With experience, players know to rob and block and not trade with the guy who's winning, so you want to look weak, and actually weak players have more time to come back, since the table is sabotaging the winning player.
It's not bad luck. Blaire, with her first two settlements, was really only on four resources; 6 brick, 10 ore, 8 wood, 9 wheat. Placing on a 2, unless the other spots are necessary, is a horrible idea, and the 11 wood is nearly as bad. There is a bit of bad luck, but she also wasted essentially 5 roads, with her starting road points being fairly bad.
The sad thing is, they didn't show settlement placements, who went 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and fourth. However, even without knowing this, it's clear Blaire placed fairly poorly. Either one of yellow's and one of blue's placements would have been preferable to either of Blaire's spots, and so she would have secured one of them if she knew where to place.
The other thing about this game is that you need to know what you're going for, and there's 2 main ways of winning, with a third option available. The first is playing for wood/brick (and a bit of wheat), and running for longest road. The second is ore/wheat/sheep, and going for largest army / victory points. The third option is simply going for city/settlement win, but that's just harder.
Keep in mind, I'm not putter her down. Catan is complicated, and there is a reason the game has championships that are led by poker players - it really is that complex, just with a cute exterior. I agree with you that it should be banished from half of all game tables as there is nuance, complexity, skill, and strategy. The game is frankly not fun if any of the players are new playing against people that have played it before.
Sorry for the rant, but I feel it's not fair to the game to simply cast it off as being luck based, when there is a large amount you can do as a player to consistently keep yourself ahead of other players.
@@danielrichmond5662 I'm pretty sure they just used the recommended beginner layout for the tiles and starting position, so Blaire's starting position was due to poor luck as well, not poor judgement
I used to really like CATAN, especially with Cities and Knights. But it's now just been sitting on my shelf for 10+ years without being played and I don't expect I'll ever play it again. I do occasionally play the Settlers of America variant, because it is an objectively better gaming experience all around (though definitely not my favorite game).
There are just too many ways to get royally screwed over in the base game and a lot of them are because of poor game design. Like how the board is laid out in hexes, but a significant portion of the board where you can place settlements is pretty worthless, specifically the "coastal" areas that aren't part of a harbor, especially the spots that touch only one hex. Also, because of the rule that settlements have to be at least two segments away from every other settlement, you can end up where you can only have one or two settlements around a hex that you really want to be able to get resources from because every other spot was blocked by nearby settlements due to poor alignment of the settlements. In a 4 player game, that can mean that it's not possible for anyone to build in more than 3 or 4 places inland, forcing you to build a bunch more on the coastal areas. There's also a lot of things that you can stumble into at the beginning of the game that then completely screws you over for the rest of the game. For example, I was once in a game where someone placed their two starting settlements too near each other and were quickly surrounded and prevented from accessing other areas of the island. In another game, a player's starting settlements were only getting wheat, sheep, and ore and didn't get any wood or brick, so it was nearly impossible from them to do anything...
Basically, if my buddy that runs a gaming store ever decides to start taking in used games, I'll be unloading my CATAN collection pretty quickly! LOL
I love the whole cast of BGC but these I like to call this group the “Original 4” and I wish we had more games with just these 4 sometimes. ❤ Laurie Adam Sully and Blair the goats 🐐
Laurie, Adam and Blair are definite originals. A whole host of people appeared well before Sully, but he is such an integral part of the channel now most people tend to forget this. Jon, Issac, Tom were there from the very beginning.
I love how the ninja air chop (hwah!) has (probably unconsciously) become the universally understood "sexy" action
Sexy legends live on!!
I miss Brooke so much already. She just adds such unique presence to every episode she’s in. She is so missed 😭 I hope she’s really happy back in the states.
This is actually my favorite board game youtube channel. I love watching them play, it feels like I’m also there
1:18:47 - And Laurie thought he had it made skipping out to play Switch during Monopoly! 😂. Little did he know Catan was waiting for him! :)
43:10 “I can’t unload these baaah-stards” was the best unintentional pun Adam has ever delivered.
Or SHIP them out to sea
Hearing "Wood" and "Ore" 50 times has left me murmuring to myself. "Ore or Oar? Oar ore or wood yew."
Sullivan is 21. Who wine the man
What a load of Balderdash
@@the_tea_genasi Came to find the same thing. Oh great @TheGreatPumpkin WHAT DID YOU MEAN!!!
@TheGreatPumpkin Balderdash brought me here, we need to knoooow!!! 😂
Yeah. I think we need an explanation. Help us
Is this the original comment? It seems like there wasn't enough time between the filming of the Balderdash episode and this comment. Is the original lost forever? Swept away by the winds of time perhaps. But truly, who wine the man
Learning that I'm older than Sullivan has me shaken to my core
I’d love to see them play the cities and knights expansion for this. So much more chaos!
Blair’s first turn is even worse when you consider that after the first road (which was good) was paired with a road to nowhere and a development card which means her alternative was building a settlement where adam wanted to lol. Oh well live and you learn and the following bits were worth it haha
Edit: 45:30 well sometimes you just live lol
I picked this game up recently and play it with my parents. Some house rules we use are that you only need to have a road connected to a harbor to use the harbor, the resources in our hands are public knowledge, and when you rob someone they can ask if you’re looking for something specific and choose to just give it to you or make you rob them normally. Makes it easier for my parents to compete with me.
I adore Catan and I tend to play it very often, but this game kinda shows both sides of it. If you play a good early game, you will have the time of your life and feel powerful throughout the entire game. If you make a mistake, it's usually impossible to fix it and will usually lead to you being a non-factor as the game progresses. Also, the late game can get very tedious if it's already obvious who is winning. The randomness of the dice and the robber can only do so much to balance things, but sometimes it's just impossible to stop the inevitable.
There's very few things as unique as Catan rage. Be it by being betrayed by another player or by being at the mercy of the dice (as perfectly illustrated by Laurie here). It's a great game, but it can be more of an acquired taste nowadays.
The dichotomy of Sully’s proclamation of joy and Laurie’s violent outburst at 1:18:14 is just perfection 👌
I'm so happy Sullivan made the 'Stanley TwoBrick" joke @46:20 because when I have a city on brick I say that everytime I get 2 brick at once... and I play a LOT of catan... I'm insufferable XD
Easily my favourite board gaming channel in youtube. you guys are awesome and you got me back into boardgames. Can't wait for more :).
What are some other good ones?
@@heretical_habits9512 im a big fan of the social deductions so both the thing games, werewolf and dead of winter. Also any where they are screwing each other over so escape from atlantis is also good.
I love watching sully on this channel. His voices and random outbursts crack me up everytime 😂
It’s always fun watching the chaos that unfolds when inexperienced players play catan. It truly turns it into a game of luck and chance
Hey guys, first of all, another great video!
I'm from Brazil, always loved board games but here is not very popular, I'm starting a collection soon to play with some friends and your videos are being really helpful on helping me chose some cool ones for different amount of people and categories
This is by far my favorite game ever. I'm so glad to finally see it be played.
I've been binge watching all of your Board Game Club videos and I love you guys. Your all so funny and exciting to watch. I love board games but don't really have many people to play with. My favorite game that I own is Betrayal at House on the Hill. That was the first video I saw when I found you guys. The only thing I would say is that Lourie is Sully are my 2 favorites and I love that they are in basically every video, however, I feel so bad for Lourie all the time. I feel like he always gets the short end of the stick. Especially in The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31. Thanks for having such a great channel of board games that I can live vicariously through.
31:20 be embarrassed all you want Adam, but at the end of the day, this is the man you're in love with
I have a feeling Isaac had a better time being dead for five hours straight than Laurie did in this here escapade
Recently discovered your channel and so happy to see you finally play Catan. It was one of the first ones that got me into board games.
RIP Klaus Teuber. Thanks for creating something that changed the tabletop gaming hobby forever.
Felt like a long week waiting for this next video to come out. Must mean I really love the content :)
The game‘s even more fun when you randomize the tiles. Makes for some really interesting strategies
I loved when Laurie said "it's Lauring time" and then mugged sully
Blaire pulled the "book of grudge joke" and nobody noticed. It was the most adorable thing 01:01:46
its great I can live vicariously through you guys lol, ive never got to play these board games myself due to having no one to play them with so its nice to sorta feel like included as a viewer, ive never played catan
I make the "Stanley Two-Brick" joke every single time I play, to similar muted reactions from my fellow players. I feel seen, Sully.
Too bad adam is gone he was the sole reason I watched nrb.
Ah yes catan the board game equivalent of tying people together by the hands and telling them there is a knife to stab each other somewhere in the room
Stanley "Twobrick" is one of the funniest things said and I'm sad that only Teri laughed so hard at it.
I didn't get that, what did the joke mean?
Can't believe Adam and Laurie are 35; they are still so hip and youthful.
Okay, before the video starts, I am SO SO EXCITED TO SEE YOU ALL PLAY CATAN! It’s one of my favorite board games 💕💕💕
Only NRB could make Catan watchable! Congrats to the winner: that also made this a good episode. :)
Sully and Adam's shirts being so close to the same colour but subtly different is doing my head in.
Here's a good house rule for two player Catan. A neutral 3rd player will take the two best spots on the board and then build the shortest road possible to connect the two spots. Then, during gameplay, a player may choose to connect their roads to the neutral player's road or settlement. If they do this, on all future turns, they may trade with the bank any resource the neutral player does not have access to at 3:1.
For example: if the neutral player is not on any brick or sheep hex, then connecting your roads to that neutral player means you can trade either sheep or brick to the bank at 3:1.
I was but sceptical of Catan as I don't enjoy it but you make any game very entertaining! I wish I had the ability to laugh even at the face of very unlucky game like Blair! I always get so competitive.
Laurie suits as a dwarf player with a book of grudges
I think this will go down as Laurie's favorite game of 2023.
The only game of Catan I've ever played was exactly like Laurie's game. I've never felt the need to play it again.
Actually, the expression is, "Keep your cards close to your vest." It's from riverboat gambler days when an accomplice would read your cards over your shoulder and tip off his or her card sharp partner.
Remember the first few rolls of the game, when Laurie was so happy…..😂
Today I learned that I'm one year older than anyone on this channel and I just... I died a little inside.
They skipped picking spots on the board, which might be the most important part of this game.
Never heard of Catan or this channel but I'm laughing like an idiot at 6:34am enjoying this episode way too much.
am i losing my mind, i definitely feel like i seen them play catan before
Laurie is so underrated the energy be brings to this table is amazing
1:22:48 the shear contrast between the winner and losses 🤣
IT BLAIR!
Feels like it's been a while
Sully being a baby doing a voice like if Churchill were a valley girl in the first ten minutes is a good sign
Whelp, this destroyed any and all desire to try Catan.
I would have liked to see the setup phase for the game because there's a decent amount of strategy that goes into that phase
I haven't done the math, but I suspect the setup phase plays a massive factor into how well you do.
@@aos-archive It really does. Odd they didn't include it. Maybe it was deemed to long to include since there was probably some coaching going on during it.
@@aos-archive it does, it's basically the whole game.
I have been waiting for this episode since u started watching the channel a year ago, my favorite game by far!!
Also sully could've taken that sheep port so early and made his life so much easier 🤣
Sullivan is my f*ing hero! This episode was absolutely hilarious from all of you!
I wish we'd seen the initial placement phases! The politicking and kibbutzing that goes on then does so much to set up the rest of the game.
It's a Stanley Twobrick when we play too. And, as we're in the east of Scotland, it's a Forfar one when dealing with the bank.
If 2022 was the year of Adam's redemption as a player, 2023 is shaping up to be Laurie's hell
>me learning that the official name for the sheep resource is "wool"
the very foundations of my life have been undermined
Sullybear is a clean baby! He's a clean baby! Also, since when did Brooke wear glasses?
I love how Catan has the magic power to transform Laurie in Jon in Unravel mode.
The hell is in Laurie's coffee today? He is AMPED. I like this jazzed up Laurie.
sully is my fave hes always a blast lmao.
Thank you for doing Catan! Been waiting for this episode
They needed a running display of the points for each player. I always keep this tally in my head and it informs every decision I make.
I’ve never once heard anyone refer to the resource as “wool” and not sheep 😂
20 minutes in and everyone seems to have gone more insane than usual.
Catan is a far-out game.
37:54 Sullivan built a road without spending any resources, cheeky
Great episode! Still patiently waiting to see you play Inis 😁
laurie's energy in this one is brilliant
Can't wait to see Catan on House Rules™
always a pleasure to watch your videos!
