  • During the late 70's Group 5 craze, Toyota decided to enter it's Celica into the biggest German racing series, the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft. Schnitzer Motorsport, who had exclusively raced BMW's, were tasked with developing the Celica for DRM's Division 1, while still handling BMW's factory effort in Division 2.
The Celica made its debut at Hockenheim halfway through the 77 season, with experienced and talented driver Harald Ertl at the wheel. It was a complete disaster, with the car qualifying 25 seconds off the pace of the Porsche 935, and only lasting 3 laps before breaking down. For the next 2 years, the car only finished one points race, and averaged less than 7 completed laps per race, even after signing defending champion Rolf Stommelen the following year. All the while, the Schnitzer BMW's continued to perform well in Division 2. After accomplishing nothing again in 1978 the program was dropped, and Schnitzer began developing a BMW 320 for Division 1, which fared a great deal better. The Celica reappeared in the Japanese Super Silhouette Series in 1979, run by the TOM's factory team, to the exact same dismal performance, although the car did at least finish most of it's races. The car was "retired" and replaced by the new Dome Celica Turbo in 1983.
From what I researched, this car has possibly the longest career of any unsuccessful car I've ever seen. That's 6 seasons of full monetary support from Toyota with nothing to show for it. As a cherry on top, the car was found in a Japanese junkyard in 2009 with it's TRUST paint scheme just rotting away, surrounded by overgrown weeds.

Now we just need mods for some of those insane Group 7 monsters that ran in Interserie, like the turbo McLarens and Shadows or the BRM P167.
