  • After winning everything the Australian Touring Car Championship had to offer many times over, and perhaps knowing full well that the Ford Falcon wasn't going to be competitive in 1980, Allan Moffat decided to ditch Australia to join Dick Barbour Racing's Le Mans effort. Barbour was a huge name in the American IMSA scene fielding Porsche 935's, winning GTO titles, the Daytona 24 hours, as well as the Sebring 12 hours. By 1980, the only thing left for Barbour was a win at Le Mans, and he aimed to do it with himself, John Fitzpatrick, and Brian Redman in the 70 car, with Moffat, Bob Garrettson, and a relatively unknown IMSA and Formula 2 driver by the name of Bobby Rahal in the 71 car.
Moffat and Rahal had never before turned a lap of La Sarthe, and conditions for practice and qualifying were often wet, or damp at best. Unsurprisingly, the morning and afternoon of the race was dry and hot, only for a thunderstorm to roll in just as the race started. From the 7th row the rookies made it as high as 10th place before the engine gave out 14 hours in. Their teammates in the 70 battled for the lead early on until an engine misfire relegated them to 4th overall, but still 1st in class.
Both Moffat and Rahal would separately try Le Mans again the next year to similar results before giving up on endurance racing for good. Moffat rejoined the ATCC in a Stuyvesant Mazda RX-7 in 1982, while Bobby Rahal would win the Indianapolis 500 in 1986 and three CART championships.

That turbo sounds like it’s bigger than the car

But bigger turbos make the car go faster! Did you get any of those like I sent?
