      This was really confusing to me as well, but for anyone else who may have been confused, I think I may have figured it out.
      Look at the overhead shot at the 2:57 mark. The INSIDE of the filter ring is 58mm so that it will fit over ALL the lenses. (Something smaller may not fit and/or could partially obscure any one of these lenses.)
      But notice the *INSIDE* of this 58mm circle is also slightly *TOO LARGE* and extends beyond the OUTER EDGES of the PHONE. Notice how you can see through the ring, past the phone, and onto the table underneath - slightly in the upper left, and more so on the top edges. (Another example is the sky poking through the top of the phone during the demonstration of the filter ring at the 2:54 mark.)
      This means that if you're holding the phone up, and there's any light shining from BEHIND you, that non-filtered light may possibly 'leak in' from behind you, REFLECT off the back of the ND filter, and then 'leak' - or bounce-back - onto the front-facing lenses. So you may need to 'square-up' or somehow black out those 'holes' where the 58mm ring goes beyond the edges of the phone to cut any light leaking in from around or behind you. Maybe cut out a round piece of black poster board or felt or something to fit the 82mm ring and then cut out a hole that exactly matches the rounded-square casing of the lenses and then tape that to the back of the ring. I don't know. Sounds kind of janky and I'm not even sure how big a problem this may be. I suppose I may have to spend several hundred dollars to find out! :)
      Hope this helps. It wasn't obvious to me. But it was a pinned "IMPORTANT NOTE" and I found myself asking questions like... "light leaks?" ... "tape what?"
      Really hoping we get some feedback if this was a fairly accurate description, if it's really much of a problem, or if any elegant solution has arisen. I might even subscribe. :) But granted... this was a big wall of words. Until then, I've moved everything out of my cart and into a wish list while I consider if I'd rather just use other, more expensive, proprietary solutions as mentioned in the introduction.
      Thank you for all your hard work. There was a ton of useful information in this video!

    I’ve been using my iPhone professionally for over a year on a daily basis with customers. Two tips:
    - A cage protects your phone better. And there’s always a step up ring set that goes from 35mm to 82mm.
    - Your filter adapter has openings on the back because it sticks outside your phone. That leads to reflection. Light will fall in from behind and reflect against the back of your filter. This is also solved with step up rings.
    I use Beastgrip products and I’m very happy with it. Price is good.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 місяців тому +1

      I Did answer in the pinned comment about that gap. I just forgot to mention it in my video, check it out
      Keep in mind this DIY solution is mainly for people who don’t want to invest in cages with proprietary filters that cost a lot, it’s just an easy and affordable way to use your existing filters and iPhone cover.

      @ArjenJongeling 5 місяців тому +1

      @@THEDPJOURNEY I agree: I’d never buy a cage where the vendor locks you in for their filters or add on lenses.
      That’s the beauty of cages with a standard thread and step up rings. Meanwhile I also have an Neewer cage, also with an 58mm filter holder. I’m using a 20 year old pola filter I had from my photography hobby.

    It's a nice cheap option, but the problem is the gap with the adapter ring for filter , it can let light coming inside the filter... not sure it will works. Of course none brands create a good concept case permission photographer to use their own existing filter, except the Polar Pro system don't let mount all anamorphic lens brand expect Moment but only on the Litechaser 14 and lens adaptor for filter mount isn't available for adding VND filter actually . Freewell solution is expensive but everything works. It's a bit frustrating having expensive filter for photography like the polar pro one and not be able to use it on the iPhone .All the best

    For the storage, you might wanna look into (one of these days) using one of those very simple $10 USB-C external m.2 NVME adapter dongles they sell on Amazon. You can even do what I did and open up the housing for the nvme adapter and all you really use/need out of it is the PCB board that has the m.2 connector pins and stuff on it, that's attached to a USBC female port at the end of the board. It'll reduce the size by 50% or more, and you can then get yourself a couple of high-quality thermal heat dissipation pads to overlay on the nvme drive and you could get away with basically sticking the whole thing to the back of a battery bank or some other attachment you're using.
    This way, I was able to go from using a Samsung T5 or T9 external SSD (not a huge drive or anything) which is like the size of a pack of playing cards, down to something that's barely bigger than the size of a pack of Juicy Fruit chewing gum.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY

    I have found the Powrig Magfilter system to be a good alternative as a lens filter mount. It's basically just a plate that magnetically mounts onto the phone and the receiver is just a standard filter screw-on.

      Yup, I already showed the Magsafe charger option, but the phone battery lasts pretty long time anyway. If it dies, you can charge for 15 min to give you another couple of hours of runtime

    Such a great setup that I’ve not seen bettered after all this time! I would be interested to see how you taped up the overhangs to prevent light from entering and whether it’s good for the long term or if you now have any other ideas to shield it more permanently?

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  9 місяців тому +1

      Honestly tape works so good that I didn’t consider any permanent solution. A friend of mine suggested a 3D printed solution, but again that would make it less compatible and modular

    Great explanation and I made already good use of it. I do have one point of attention: one Crucial died on me during a recording after only three days of use. The BM app gave an error message and that was it. I finished the day using internal storage only. Couldn't repair it, despite using professional tools. In the end I was able to recover apx 520Gb of data (using EaseUS and Diskwarrior, both on Mac). My other Crucial worked fine.
    I have no idea why the SSD stopped working. I used the short flat-cable you described, and also taped the connectors to the iPhone and to the SSD as I use the setup in a dynamic situation involving unicycles (see my shorts). I didn't drop the hardware, didn't hit anything.
    Crucial didn't have an explanation, but they offered a replacement disk straight away. I will use that, but will also look into a setup using fast SD-cards.

The MagSafe wallet was the exact solution for my predicament of owning a leather case, but wanting to use my Crucial X10 4TB (already own it, great minds think alike) to record. Thanks for those adivces man. SUPER helpful. But did you film something with the Battery Pack and the crucial at the back of the iPhone for more than one hour at least, and did it got warm, like not just a little but overheating ? A lot of people are complaining about Crucial and Anker getting warm, which can be very dangerous for the Iphone, and the footage...

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  10 місяців тому

      I did have it running for almost 2 hours yes, but not recording all this time of course. But the app was on as I was testing shots here and there. And again, I didn’t feel any overheating or even getting warm to the touch. Maybe because the weather was a bit cold? Not sure
      I used to live in Dubai where temperature would reach lethal levels, and I saw how phones would shut down from that heat. But this didn’t happen or anywhere close to that with this phone.

    • @Adrien-Drums
      @Adrien-Drums 10 місяців тому

      @@THEDPJOURNEY okay, thanks for the answer! but I meant shooting for more than one hour without stopping, I understand this setup for short bursts is fantastic but I’m afraid it will be a risky option to shoot concerts for exemple.
