Glad you did this video. This is just one station of the 473 of them. I work for the subway system and many of them are cesspools just like this station. You should take a trip to 116 on the 6 and you’ll be completely shocked at how terrible it is. This subway system is far from safe unlike the mayor and governor would want you to believe.
@@marciliomathias4525 Too much bureaucracy to get anything done efficiently or correctly. Then there’s the rising public to contend with. Once something is fixed up the people continually destroy it.

I'm watching from Kentucky. My daughter and her husband moved to Astoria, Queens back in June of last year and so I really appreciate these videos. They help me know what it's like there.
I LOVE Astoria. Grew up there. Huge melting pot of cultures. Lots of restaurants. There's always something to do in Astoria. They'll never get bored. 😊
My son works in Astoria.. is a great area, a lot of diversity… totally safe area.. if you’re renting it’s going to be costly.. One of the reasons it’s safe.
The West 4th Street station is actually quite an impressive and complex piece of transit underground infrastructure - eight tracks, six subway lines, converge on two levels. South of the station is a major multilevel interchange where each of the four tracks going in one direction can switch over to any of the other. For passengers, it allows a relatively easy transfer between train lines. It is sad that we do not take care of fellow human beings who are having mental health and drug issues and provide them with needed services so that the only 'safe' space for them is a subway station. Say what you will about each of the 'homeless' people you saw, they're human beings and they're clearly should not be there and should instead be sheltered somewhere where they can be safe and receive help to live good quality lives. Some might even be able to return to living productive lives. I have taken the trains late at night - lately and over the last 40+ years - and I have never been assaulted or mugged in the subway. There have been unpleasant situations, but I've never been the victim of a crime. As much as the 'homeless' people that you saw look disturbing and do strange things, they will leave you alone (as you experienced yourself). But, it is uncomfortable because you don't know that everyone is, indeed, peaceful, and because you see them doing things that are prohibited and just 'bad' for them, and for the other riders.
Here’s some unsolicited advice: If you don’t have to travel using the subway, DON’T! Yea, making shock content (for those who are unaware) like this will get views and clips will go viral, but 3am in a train station that you know in advance is “bizarre”? It’s not worth it. Until the MTA starts spending money on public safety and gets audited, all the bad things people see and hear about NYC subways will only get worse.
I was just heading home from where I was at in Queens. I didn't go to the subway at 330am just to do this video. I was connecting trains here. But yeah I understand your point.
As previously stated in these comments, which you already know, vigilance is your best defender in these environments, especially that late at night. As a FORMER homeless person here in Pittsburgh who lived on the streets, you should NEVER approach people that close like you are doing. Some of them folks are COMPLETELY out of their minds, and you have no idea what they are capable of. Take heed, stay safe. Excellent film job! 👍🏻📽
I visited NYC in 2019, it was BEAUTIFUL. and then again last year, September 2024. I felt something wrong. The rich are empty, the poor are angry, I didnt feel the "dream" vibe anymore. Its literally full of mad people hanging in the subway, the streets. Its filled with homeless, mental sickness everywhere. How the hell can I enjoy this kind of stuff
I'm from Ottawa, the latest our trains run is 2AM on fridays and saturdays, and they don't heat the underground stations presumably out of a budget shortfall, but the cold keeps the homeless out of the system
I lived in NYC most of my life, i took the train by myself to work and school in 90's and 2000's and never was scared, i used to be drunk and 1/2 asleep after work at like 3am coming home and was never scared or worried for my life back then like i am now....... I dont want to get on the trains in the daytime these days its so scary
Exactly the subway feels much more unsafe than it did 10 or 15 years ago when I was coming home late after drinking. Although I did get attacked violently once on my way to work at 3am about 20 years ago...

I agree. That was just plain reckless and stupid. I’ve been to the West 4th St. station numerous times, and I’d never go on the elevator there for that very reason. Doesn’t matter what time of day.

Born and raised in NYC, but thank God I was able to move my family to greener pastures ! NYC has definitely gotten worse in the last few years…and sadly I don’t see it getting better in the near future…
As a long-time NYC resident, the NYC subway has always been like this, especially after 2 AM. We just all now have the technology to film it, so people are more aware of it.
I have not been to NYC recently, but in 1972, I took the Subway from the Bowery station at 2:30 a.m. and felt very uneasy then. Thanks for making this video, and take care. Jason. I lived in West Berlin in the 1950s and the transit system is much cleaner. It is somewhat dangerous now from what I have heard.
Yeah, remember when Mayor Lindsay would walk through Harlem hoping to cool things down a bit during those "Long Hot Summers" of riots? He was wishing the National Guard wouldn't need to be called out like in other cities. While the Vietnam War was raging half way around the world, federal troops, 101st Airborne, was deployed to the streets of Detroit. It was like the whole country was on fire.
Interesting video, thanku. Looks like u walked together with a friend, I hope so (during evening/night time). I'm from Amsterdam and I often visit NYC. I just take the midtown trains during evening times when its still crowdy. Never during late hours/night. I've never took an elevator and I never will, even not during day time. Fortunately never experienced scary or dangerous shit (except for the drugs and homeless problems), hope to keep it that way. Like u said, keep safe distance from the platform, dont ware earphones, look around, stay focussed. Subway system is perfect to get around in NYC, but always be aware of strange things/people. If u hesitate or dont trust the vibe, take a taxi or stay inside. Same advice for Europe public transport. Be safe everyone! Greetz from Amsterdam😇🤗
I hope you live to continue to do more videos. You are a brave man. I wouldn’t go near the subways. It is disgusting that people with mental illnesses are left to their own devices and are not cared for in your country.
Until 1973, crazy/insane people were locked in an asylum, such as the one in Central Islip, Long Island. After 1973, they were released and we get to be with these insane people.
Keep the Subway vids coming dude! I'm a Brit and I've ridden the subway at 3-4am and I'd probably would still ride it at those times! Stay safe my friend!
Hey my friend, I’m a long time New Yorker and I’ve been in the west 4th stop probably 1000 times. Please don’t risk your life for us! It’s not worth it! NYC is crazy these days. God bless you, sir ❤
I been in this situation plenty of times at or around 3:30am. Sometimes going home from a night out, sometimes--on occasion--going to work. You keep your wits about you, keep aware of your surroundings, and know that no one is (usually) down there to help you out if things go sideways. And is there a police presence EVER there? Fuggedaboutit!
And our Mayor says crime and homeless people is going down don't know what City he's talking about sure not New York City people are scared to walk the streets even live here anymore!
Hello from Loveland,Colorado I love these kinds of videos. We have your basic bus and light rail 🚈 for transport in the Denver area. But more busses 🚎 here in Northern Colorado. Thanks for the awesome videos phenomenal work 😊.
Great video. Reminds me of the book, "Subways are for sleeping", written in the 1950's. The homeless, in those days figured out the system, where they could get certain subways late at night and get about 6 hours sleep on the train.
Thanks for having courage to go down there. People should not be living in the subways. Period. I lived in NYC for 50 years. I never dared to ride after midnight (let alone walk the streets alone). And trust me, riding after 8 pm ain't no picnic either.😆 My cousin cleaned subway cars in the middle of the night for several years. Stories of the crazy people he encountered could fill a book. Things will not get better until leaders make it a top priority. But most do not seem to care.
I grew up in NYC and left in the early 90s. Two takeaways..I never saw the level of homelessness, mental illness and open drug use as you see today. It's quadrupled and is arguably more dangerous than the late 70s and 80s South Bronx!! And that place had burnt out buildings and gangs! What happened new York?!? Things really were cleaned up when I visited in 2004...the rats were still there but this place looks more like East Oakland than NY then...
Considering the station is 92 years old it's functional but rough. If the city would stop dumping tax money into the illegals and put it to upgrading the stations it should would be nice for the taxpayers.
Retired DSNY worker and moved out of state. 1 minute in and this video already gives me PTSD. @1:17 the rat claims the streets and the underground too! Lol!
I’m watching this from the warmth of my home remembering the years I took the train late night to and from work. Mostly calm but very weird vibes. I always walked with the MTA guys (if they were around) and followed them on the train when I could. During broad daylight was the most trouble for me, especially in midtown - crazy people, fighting, someone even tried to attack me once. The subway is messed up. It is nice to go home drunk on the train though.
This is like a horror movie. I’m screaming at the tv like “No Jason, don’t take the elevator. Don’t do it. Whoops, he’s dead.” This will be a found footage soon…and there’s someone already in there? RUNNNNN
You asked a question for comments, and then I'll answer that yes, at that exact time, I came there. But in reality, I wasn't actually there; it was in a dream, because I have never been to New York... 😅😅😅😅

Is 116 the new 125 and Lex?
At 3am nowhere is safe.
@@orangewarm1nah my rural central Pennsylvania town is safe at 3am.
I'm shocked🥺. New York is so rich. Why they do not make a full repair on stations😔
@@marciliomathias4525 Too much bureaucracy to get anything done efficiently or correctly. Then there’s the rising public to contend with. Once something is fixed up the people continually destroy it.
As often as I go to NYC and take the subway I am always amazed that a city with so many billion and millionaires and high taxes is so filthy in the subway stations.
Because THEY don’t use them.
Those people don't take the subway.
That's why they build towers so the in the upper floors with private amenities if the need something it's delivered and if the travel the hire a car or used to be helicopters for the really well of don't know if the still allow helicopters tho
@@Cheri94 That is not the reason they are dirty.

I LOVE Astoria. Grew up there. Huge melting pot of cultures. Lots of restaurants. There's always something to do in Astoria. They'll never get bored. 😊
That's awesome! Hope you're enjoying the videos.
My son works in Astoria.. is a great area, a lot of diversity… totally safe area.. if you’re renting it’s going to be costly.. One of the reasons it’s safe.
The legend is fearless, its another world in the subway during the nightime.
Manny!!! No you are the best city walker there is!!
Thank you for this comment
these videos really raising awareness for how bad it is out there. hats off to you sir
I love your videos!! Watching this makes me a little scared for you! Stay safe! 💕
Lisaaaaa!! ❤❤❤
Also, walking up behind cops like that isn't smart. He probably just moved to NY.
Send this video to the mayor
The mayor is a narcissistic joke. He'll claim everything is cool and ok. Good luck on dealing with that clown!
The mayor? Try the Governor. She’s the one promoting how safe the subway is.
He’s too busy with corruption at the moment.
In the elevator the man was smoking crack, as for the cameras, he knows the cops won't do a thing. And they won't.
Well, not exactly. They might steal his goods.
I'm from Ottawa, the latest our trains run is 2AM on fridays and saturdays, and they don't heat the underground stations presumably out of a budget shortfall, but the cold keeps the homeless out of the system
That's interesting that your trains don't run all night.
@@CarlaRuppNYC is one of the cities that runs trains 24/7

I lived in NYC most of my life, i took the train by myself to work and school in 90's and 2000's and never was scared, i used to be drunk and 1/2 asleep after work at like 3am coming home and was never scared or worried for my life back then like i am now....... I dont want to get on the trains in the daytime these days its so scary
Exactly the subway feels much more unsafe than it did 10 or 15 years ago when I was coming home late after drinking. Although I did get attacked violently once on my way to work at 3am about 20 years ago...
I feel the same . 90s kid and started taking the train in hs. It’s always been weird but now it’s just different

I agree. That was just plain reckless and stupid. I’ve been to the West 4th St. station numerous times, and I’d never go on the elevator there for that very reason. Doesn’t matter what time of day.

I'm a native New Yorker. I grew up in the '90s in New York. A lot different than today. At 3:20, I used to wait for the train on that very spot on that station to head to Brooklyn.
In the 70's and 80's was even worst, so i guess you got the best of it, enjoy your memories
@Jeffcrocodile "Worse", meaning the crime rate was higher? Yes, I do miss the '90s.
I feel like things got significantly better during bloombergs nyc and I can’t even believe I’m saying that
I was on the train a few years ago and a man threatened to punch me in my face. After that experience I never took the train again. I drive everywhere.

Do the trains run 24/7?
All of the MTA stations have trains active 24/7. It's just that during the late night hours, you're waiting a bit longer compared to peak hours.
As a long-time NYC resident, the NYC subway has always been like this, especially after 2 AM. We just all now have the technology to film it, so people are more aware of it.
Very right.
Dont you think that its a problem that should be fixed bow in 2025? I syaad of just saying its always been thet way....
Thanks so much!
Bowery in '72?? That was Homeless Central back then
Germans now caall Berlin our Federal Capital Slum.....or Berlinistan
bowery in '72 was frightful the city has been cleaned up IMO the lindsey years were horrific...before giuliani who fixed things up good.
Thanks for the tour. Your very brave. 👍✌️😎

They should make a horror film that's solely based on the NYC subway.
And trust me, riding after 8 pm ain't no picnic either.😆
My cousin cleaned subway cars in the middle of the night for several years.
They need to shut down the subway and fix it round that time. This is ridiculous
Fix it how.
Considering the station is 92 years old it's functional but rough. If the city would stop dumping tax money into the illegals and put it to upgrading the stations it should would be nice for the taxpayers.
Ya think? 😊
I also think that grifting politicians would leave more tax money aswell.
Sheesh they are literally upgrading the station but sure blame the illegals.

Yeah it’s a real mixed bag.
