Longyearbyen, the administrative centre of Svalbard, is a tiny Norwegian metropolis with 2,428 residents from almost 54 different countries. The small Arctic town is inhabited by nature enthusiasts who live in close unity under tough climatic conditions with the High Arctic wilderness right on their doorstep. Longyearbyen is the gateway to the nature-based experiences and the starting point for most adventures in Svalbard. This Arctic wilderness starts virtually in the town centre and never ends!

I was last in Svalbard in July 1996 with a group tour from Shetland Islands.
Had a wonderful 3 nights and both scenery and people as well as the day trips were all highlights.
Would hope to see the Islands again but for longer.

For South East Asian viewers, at 12:19s they have durians in the supermarket!! (Assuming the picture was taken in Longyearbyen).
One thing worth mentioning, if the camp ground is closed and you camp it will open the next day.

It is not easy to live there, Master of Puppets.
No social security, no health care, no home unless you get a job first and the constant threat of polar bears, to name but a few things. I, too, had dreams of going to live there but changed my mind after watching this video.

@@keriprice3481 Anyone who wants to build has to apply to the local administrators and keep within a strict zoning system,there is very limited space available.And even with permission,building a house or a cabin is very expensive here because you need to import labor and transport building materials by ship.
@@Jefic03 You have to have a job and a place in which to live before you settle there, Keri. Svalbard laws do not make life easy there.

Take a tent and camp near the airport, its free. I stayed for 2 weeks, an English visitor I met was sent back, no money.

@@chemawatersa377 Take tent to Svalbard and look after yourself. Accommodation is expensive. Its only an hours walk to town.

same rules as in norway mainland? could you leave a tent in the place for a few days to use as base camp? is that area "bear controled"?

@@chemawatersa377 1992 and I remember everything, keeping a diary priceless. I had small coffin tent was hard to see but I leave it, same in Norway never had problems. The 1st night in tent I heard something outside was so scared but was an elk.. When the car left the campground I sneaked in for a shower. English guy I met was strange, had no accommodation, was a hobo, he flew back to Tromso. I had to wait 2 weeks as I got cargo ship there & back. Hope you get there. Good luck.

Also mention that in 2015 11 houses were demolished by an avalanche and 10% of the citizens have left and its in the extreme risk of climate change all tourism and building is not helping but rather contributing to the deleterious effects. Wish people cared more...
