  • Get an intro to the math of Russian Roulette with "Surviving the Deadliest Game": • Surviving The Deadlies...
We know from “Surviving the Deadliest Game” that there’s no more dangerous game than Russian Roulette. And is there any game stupider than a duel in which two people stand there and shoot at each other? No -- so what happens when you combine them?!
Legendary scientific thinkers Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison are about to find out as their balloon avatars battle it out for electrical supremacy.
In this scenario, there’s only one single gun that Edison and Tesla pass back and forth for each shot. Can that game actually be fair if someone can go first and win on the first shot? If the first player has a probabilistic advantage, how much is it?
Is it possible for us to adjust the game in such a way that the first player’s advantage is a lot more fair? Can you EVER have a perfectly fair turn-based game when it’s possible for a player to win on the first turn?
Oh, and there’s actually a way that you can use your phone as a random number generator to simulate a Russian Roulette game in a perfectly safe way.
We thought The War of the Currents was over, but it won’t be decided until today. Edison and Tesla will enter Vsauce2. Only one will leave.

The Russian roulette I heard is a different version:
Instead of shooting at their rival the one who goes first shoot his own head instead and then hand the pistol to his rival for his suicidal turn _without re-spin_ and so does the rival will hand it back without spinning the cartage again if he survives.
And there is a trick for this version of roulette: if you goes first and you survived the 5th shot, instead of handing the revolver to your rival for his suicidal turn, do him a favor by shoot him directly because chances are as soon as he loaded the 6th guaranteed shot he will cheat by immediately point the gun at you and fire.

I'd do this that way: Headison spins and shoots. Tesla shoots. Repeat till dead end ;)
It easy to see it's perfectly fair as the chance of bullet after spinning being in the first chamber is the same as in second (if we neglect the off-center mass of the bullet causing slightly uneven spin).
Alternatively it can be: First baloon spins, shoots and passes the gun. In each next step a baloon shoots, spins, shoots again, passes the gun. Also 50 - 50, but both get chance at spinning.

You could make the NFL coin flip much closer to even with a simple change... the team that wins the coin flip would still have a 52% chance to win, but if you made it so the team that lost the coin flip only had to tie to win you'd get them up to 48%. It would also create an interesting choice... let the team that wins the coin toss decide to either receive, in which case they have to win to win, or to receive, in which case they would win or tie to win. That could create an interesting tactical decision. A team with a really strong defense might choose to kick with their only goal being to stop the other team from scoring.

A person could, probably quite reliably, stop the timer in a designated region of they so wish. Human behavior can be used to generate randomness, but it has to be something we don't directly control.
If you want a result which is unpredictable (by someone who has access to a normal person's resources), computer PRNG will probably do much better than any human choice. Many computers *do* use subconscious human input to seed their randomness. If you have fine enough control to affect that in a predictable way, you could definitely control a dice roll or timer.

fun fact about Duels: they were very formally done, and they were made specifically so that odds are, assuming it even got to shooting, neither of them died by having the barrel of the gun be very small, causing the bullet to bounce around in it, and, most duels in the first place never even got to the shooting, people tend to assume that duels were informal, but in reality, there was a whole process, basically, if your pride was challenged, you would challenge the person to a duel, assuming they don't back down, you pick your second, who is there to basically there to just talk to the other second and try and resolve the issue, so the seconds are essentially peacemakers, then you have a doctor on site, turned around, etc etc, like I said, there's a lot of formalities, and few even got to the shooting

I think the best way to approach the inherent unfair advantage that the player who goes first gets is making the one who went second fire 2 shots, but then every subsequent shot returnes to only 1. This case it's also not the insanity of the survivor getting so much better of a chance at winning because *BOOM,* they get some 69420 shots in one round now!

This is why the dealer in blackjack has the advantage, getting busted is the same as the gun firing. You have to risk getting busted first, so if there were no 3 to 2 payout for a blackjack, no doubling and no splitting, the dealer would have about a 54 something percent chance of winning, with a slight variation depending on which cards were already dealt. If it were an infinite deck it would be that.

@@ivanzlatev9298 I've wrote a short script in python to optimize the game - where each round the player less likely to have won so far takes a shot. Edison's turns are represented with 1's, Tesla's with 0's. Got the following sequence:
      1001011001100110011001011001100110011001101001100101100110011001...

      9666659999a65999a5a6665a659999a659a665a65a5a.
When stopped, the difference between their chances to win is ~1.55e-15 (in Tesla's favour surprisingly), and the chance for a tie is ~9.6e-15).
Obvious patterns are hard to find, though it does start along with ETTE-TEET-TEET

I think there are variations, but that version has a problem where after 5 clicks the chance is gone and there’s no reason to continue the game.

@@LuLu-ip4zb Sure, but if no one knows the position, then from the perspective of the player, it’s chance all the way until then last pull.
My point is the game changes significantly on the last pull when there is a 100% chance of death.

The odds change depending on the amount of available information, so to even it out you remove some information.
Two guns. One bullet/dart. Nobody peeks down the chambers. Guns are swapped between each set of simultaneous shots.

One idea I had is to utilize the number of rounds the game has gone as a method of evening out the percentage. Let's say after 100 rounds the chance of first player victory is 53% and the game to not end is 3%. And then just grant the second player a victory if it does end in a tie to make the percent winning even out or even a coin flip to reset the chances. The exact round to play it out to would need to be decided mathematically but I think that is the elegance in this possible solution that is being presented.

The version I knew was kinda different, you could choose 3 options:
Shoot yourself: if u survive u hand the gun to the other player and he picks what he does.
Shoot opponent: U shoot your opponent, gun fires you win, it doesnt u have to immediately shoot yourself (whitout a chance to spin, if you survive you hand the gun)
Spin: Spins again the gun, only available once for each player, can be used to shoo himself or his opponent.

They each had a 16.67% chance of winning each time you pulled the trigger. No matter what because you randomized the chamber each pull of the trigger.

Yes, each turn there is a 16.67%. Same with dice logic, if you already hit 6 on a dice six different times, you still have a 16.67% chance on getting another 6 regardless of the times you've already thrown 6.
However, hitting 6 seven times in a row has a different chance than already having had 6 six times in a row and currently being on your 7th.
So to make maths a bit shorter, lets just show all the possibilities for just 2 shots:
Each row has a 16.67% chance of happening, the final row only having a 6, because a shot happened.
      11 12 13 14 15 16
      21 22 23 24 25 26
      31 32 33 34 35 36
      41 42 43 44 45 46
      51 52 53 54 55 56
      6
The second shot being a 6 on its own has a 16.67% chance of happening, but that specific combination is a lot less likely to happen in the whole chart, as it only has 3% chance of happening in that specific order.
For ANY shot to happen within 2 tries, we're at 30.55%. 16.67% of those happening on the first shot, leaving 13.89% chance of it happening on the second shot.
