Don't worry darling, the movie that circulated the news for months prior to its release. Olivia Wilde is directing harry styles and Florence pugh in this psycho-dramatic thriller. Today I reviewed and recapped the entire film.

Idk if this was commented yet, but the original script was written by brothers Carey and Shane van dyke. It was re-written by Katie Silberman. And I wish they kept the ending cause it was so good. In the original ending, it’s still set in the 1950’s. Alice finds the exit portal in the simulation in a house that’s listed “for sale.” She wakes up in the real world hooked up to IV and ofc the simulation. She also finds divorce papers beside her, because Alice wanted to divorce Jack. But the year is now 2050. She goes back into the simulation so she doesn’t cause any suspicion, but Jack could tell she knows something so sends her to shock therapy. Which, like the movie, doesn’t completely work. One day she tricks Jack into telling her everything. Jack explains how he hated how Alice put work before their relationship, so he signed them both up for “Alt-Life” which is the equivalent to what the movie called the Victory Project. Jack shows Alice that there’s an exit portal in their house, so she leaves. But Jack follows her and they get into a fight, which ends in Alice stabbing Jack. In the simulation, Bunny finds Alice unconscious and Jack dead. Alice wakes back up in the 1950’s in a psych ward, and she’s told that everything, the future, the Alt-Life, it was hallucinations. And she was told that she killed Jack because she hallucinated a future where she was free. Bunny visits her in the psych ward, and whispers that there’s an exit portal behind them, and Bunny leaves. Alice heads towards the exit portal and that’s where it ends.
Alice waking up in the psych ward was kinda Alt-Life’s last try at gaslighting Alice into staying. However, I will say that I don’t think this ending would’ve worked with the movie we just got and how it was directed. Because I think in the original ending, it’s intended for the viewers to also think she’s hallucinated the entire thing. But there’s too much build up on the gaslighting in the movie, and due to so much gaslighting, I wouldn’t have believed the psych ward trick at all. Anyways, that was my rant in the ending..

The red henchmen reminded me of the card guards too. I kept thinking if there are hints to the Cheshire Cat or the Queen of Hearts, or the tea party too (maybe the lavish but pointless parties as distractions?). Idk maybe I am looking too much into it :D

I was so confused about the character’s backstory. Because part of the alleged reason that Jack forced Alice into the Victory Project is because he felt like he couldn’t provide for them, and she responded that she would take “extra shifts” despite seeming like she was exhausted with the amount of work she already had. The apartment that they lived in was also pretty run down, without working hot water. However, Alice was a WHOLE SURGEON, and surgeons are among the highest paid medical specialty. So, I don’t understand if this is just people in Hollywood not understanding how much money people with non-entertainment industry jobs can make, but it just seems really implausible that Alice would’ve been making too little money unless she was still in residency.

The scene after Jack gets promoted and he's told to dance is just Frank exercising his control over Jack to show Alice she has no control or say here in this world. That's why when they get there and she looks around and she sees Frank staring at her, he knows everything she knows and he wants to send her a message.
Jack is conflicted himself in his actions knowing they aren't right but he tells himself that he's doing it for them both (for their r/s, etc) we see this when Alice is literally begging to leave and he's literally just like 'uhhhh what should I do I can't leave' but more so internally bc he is literally silent. You know when you get asked something and you're just uhhhh.... and you don't know what to say and you just kinda stare at the person it's kinda like that (sorry if that doesn't make sense).
Anyways, when Frank calls Jack up he literally 'proposes' and gifts him a ring for the promotion, from the velvet black box the ring was in, to the gaudiness of it, and even the way he slipped the ring on was to mimic a marriage proposal. The imagery was to show that Jack does not belong to Alice, that isn't her husband, it's Frank's.
And then he exercises his control even more by telling him to dance, making him perform and look ridiculous on purpose just because he can, this juxtaposed with Alice having a breakdown in the other room was an interesting scene to me at least. It showed that he's literally happy to do whatever they tell him without thought to stay in this world even if it's to the detriment of his wife which we see in the movie countless times.
Sorry for the long write up I just really liked this scene I thought it was shot well.

      1) the airplane was identical to the toy Margaret's son had when they ventured into the desert, and prior to the crash we see Alice look at Margaret holding on to the toy on her backyard (probably because of grief). I think the crash (along with the other "weird" stuff Alice experiences, like the claustrophobic scenes with the wall closing in on her and the plastic wrap on her head) is her subconscious trying to point out that something is wrong. I don't know about you, but sometimes my dreams feel like disjointed sequences of events, with eerie shit happening all around, and I believe that Alice began to experience the simulation as a dream itself once she began to notice the cracks. Anyway, that's just my thoughts
      2) the earth quakes seem to be either glitches in the system or rather (and I agree with this interpretation I saw online a bit one more) updates.

Harry isn't the best actor BUT I don't agree with people saying shia would have been better. Harry has a rep as an attractive well liked nice guy - you are led into a false sense of security that he will be a loving husband and then when it flips to showing him as an incel it is a massive shock- you couldn't get that level of shock or visual transformation with shia. Casting THE it guy was a clever casting choice imo.

The dance scene in my opinion was meant to make you uncomfortable, it was a "dance monkey dance" type thing, because while he thought the victory project would bring him control over his life, it didn't, instead it put the control in the "boss"'s hand, hence telling him to dance.

One thing I noticed about this movie is like at the end of the movie Gemma stabs Frank and it just showed that frank was the “billboard man” and Gemma was really just running the show and once frank messed up she was like “your dumb now I gotta clean up your mess” which we know didn’t happen but like just goes to show that a man can be the face but the woman can be running the show and that’s why I think Gemma blew up at Alice bc it was affecting frank as much bc it wasn’t really his dream it was Gemma’s and so Gemma got insanely offended when Alice started showing their true colors bc Gemma felt her world slipping from her hands and needed to do everything to protect it but that’s just me this movie could’ve meant so many things to different people. Overall it was a decent movie I wouldn’t see it again in theaters tho maybe like just watch it at home maybe if jack was not Harry styles. Not saying Harry didn’t try he really did and was decent I just think there could’ve been a better suited person who had a bit more experience in psychological thrillers

I completely agree with you. The second act was so draged out.
I noticed people leaving the theater to go to the toilet and restock their food during that part of the movie.
I got that she has doubt and that something is wrong but after the first few scenes I wanted to have some plot and context.
I'm not really made for watching movies, so it really annoyed me that it took so long and I was just waiting for it to end. I wasn't even really interested in the end anymore especially when I noticed I would get no to mediocre explanations for the events that happend. Like the eggs or the foil that were just glitches in the end.
Also it made me focus more on "irrelevant" stuff because I didn't care anymore what happend. For example Alice walking out of the house to the middle of the street for then running back to the car instead to just get the car or that she walked around and not just climbed up the hill. And those things made me even more mad because I thought its stupid.
Normally I love movies where you can interpret stuff with hints from the movies and you might watch the movie more often to notice more stuff. But there is a difference between plotholes and Place for Interpretation.
I don't think I will watch this movie again, it didn't spark my curiosity because I feel like there is nothing to work with. I wish we got more background stories. This movie was way too long for that tiny bit of plot that was just stuffed into the last 10min.
The concept had a lot of potential.
I think the other criterias were good or even great. But if you loose me on the plot you loose me. I'm sorry the acting can be great, the cinematography outstanding. But if I feel like I'm falling asleep and just want to go home well

when the movie trailer came out for “don’t worry darling”, I was so excited!! i love movies about dystopias and basically like a “stepford wives” thing. when all the drama and reviews came out, I was very worried that the movie would be bad and I wasn’t expecting a whole lot when I watched it. but I must say, I actually really enjoyed watching the movie, and I legitimately watched it 3 different times in the same week with different people because I liked it so much. i thought some parts were sloppy(the dance scene and stuff like that), and I thought the crew should have done a better job at making sure there wasn’t so much drama with everything, but I really enjoyed it and I thought it was a relatively good movie.

For the only making 3 backgrounds for the women in the simulator, I took that as Chris Pine's character deeming his work to be so good he only needed to come up with 3 different backgrounds for people to have fake memories of. Alice's moment of pointing out this flaw shows what it is, a flaw in his messed up design for them in there. I figured that scene was to show Alice was on to him more than he thought.

  • @kaatyb19

just a few things that I took from the movie! -
    - The dance scene to me was a juxtaposition from Alice figuring it all out and going against victory as her husband literally danced like a crazy person to please the creator. Just personification of Jack's commitment to victory and how much he wants to be apart of it.
    - I think they all had the same backgrounds because the whole point of some scenes is to show how exact all their lives looked to each other. The men all got in their cars at the same time, pulled out together, drove away in perfect synchrony, the wives all wave together, turn and go inside at the same time. So they all meet and get together in the exact same 'perfect, cute' way.
    - I think the little red men are hinted at during the scene in the hospital where Alice walks down the hall. One of the maintenance people wore a full red jumpsuit like the men in victory. (the people helping maintain the simulation)
    - During the 'application' scene you hear the victory project ask if there is an existing relationship with their chosen wife, so that probably means some of the wives have no idea who their 'husbands' are.
    - There aren't even enough sex scenes in the movie to even make it a talking point IMO, but to discuss it as 'female empowerment' is completely ridiculous.
    - I am a Harry fan so I am kind of bias - but I thought the accent was pretty good!! The acting was fine too. I think someone like harry might have been a better choice than shia in some aspects. Only because he has to look in some parts like a very submissive person, something I don't think someone who looks like shia could pull off. I couldn't imagine a character who looks like shia being okay with florence taking the seat at the head of the table in front of his boss and just sitting down and shutting up about it. Harry doesn't pull off the screaming and 'assertive scenes' but maybe that's because Jack's not the 'man of the house' type in real life. He's a scared little boy trying to hold on to his only chance at feeling like he was important. Shia would have however, completely nailed the psychotic part of the character. Because no matter how much you love Harry Styles, you can't really look at the character of Jack as anything except a psychopath.
    - Completely agree on the third act being way too rushed. Wish they would have been able to get into more of the real life stuff of the victory project and all that..
But I thought the movie was fine. Beautiful to watch, shot really well, and Florence is incredible like always!

Eternal Sunshine does this really well by revealing we are in the main characters memories by the end of the first act. The third act was extremly rushed here. I laughed out loud in the audience when Bunny tells Alice "If a man dies in Victory, they die in real life!" i think that the overall message of the film and how it relates to today could have been super impactful if it was handled/marketed the right way. i interpreted it as a criticism of how online cults of personality indoctrinate lonely young men who feel dejected as a result of capitalism. this also extends to incel groups online (even tho jack was in a relationship with alice). a lot of these guys are pulled in figures like jordan peterson and andrew tate who claim to be sticking up for depressed men, but instead of criticizing capitalism they claim feminism is what made them this way. i think that’s evident in the fact that the simulation is centered in the 50s, since 50s imagery is glamorized by right wingers as a time that we need to “return to” in order to “restore the family”. like think about it: it’s a simulation, why did they choose to make it a past era when they could’ve just done an idealized version of modern lifestyle? one of the scenes with jack and alice’s old lives shows frank specifically talking about the role of men or something along those lines too. i’m also pretty sure olivia wilde specifically linked the film to peterson so there’s that
this online pipeline is really harmful and it’s expanding with platforms like tiktok that make it easier to fall down rabbit holes. but the fact that the film was marketed to be a “womens-empowerment” movie (and the fact that the drama behind it really upstaged any discussion about the plot) was super damaging to any lessons that the audience could have derived from it. i wish it was put in better hands/circumstances

it most definitely isn't perfect (no movie truly is) but the way it plays with symbolism, the unconscious and the (although not enough explored) social commentary it tries to give are all very interesting. It could have been executed in a better way for sure, I have my own criticisms, for example, I think they should have made Alice's character more rebellious, to really send the message that she wasn't happy living in the simulation, because we only get to see her pretty happy being a housewife until the cracks begin to show; also, the sex (or rather r*pe) scenes shouldn't have been about "female pleasure", they should have been more uncomfortable, unsatistactory or simply shot differently to not convey eroticism, because there is not informed consent. Still, I don't see why it gets so much hate
